I just want to start by saying I'm in California and this is for the service experienced as my parents' report that this cake was awesome. I remember going here growing up until I left NY about 10 years ago. The cakes are beautiful, great selection, not overly sweet, and something for everyone. I find it reasonably priced. It is not like some fancy French patisserie shop, but very good. I am reviewing this based on the customer service. I live in CA and wanted to place an order for my dad's birthday. I received a call from them shortly after placing the order informing me they were out. We were easily able to choose another cake, I explained to the lady on the phone that I was in CA and ordering it for my dad. She asked what colour I wanted the writing. At almost 2:30 Eastern time, she called again asking what time I would pick up because they were closing, and wanted to be sure they would keep it fresh. I truly appreciate it. In my ignorance, I did not even check what time they closed - so the fact that they closed at 3 was surprising and a bit early, but that's on me. So - thank you for the good service an attention in trying to make something special for my dad, though I can't be there with him right now. I can report that my dad, mom, and sister really enjoyed the cake and as we remember. They live in Rockaway Beach, and going through Crossbay Blvd is usually one of their routes home. read more

I stopped in to grab a birthday cake. Upon entering I wasn't greeted so I said hello to the cashier. The only person that was in my view. She never responded. Another person walked near where I was standing and asked if they could help me. I asked her the flavor of a particular cake, then selected the cake I wanted. She asked if I wanted happy birthday on it and I told her yes. She asked the cashier if she could ring me up. She asked if I was paying cash or card, I told her cash. I gave her the money, she gave me back my change then walked away from the register and went in the back, she never said thank or anything else. The young lady that was helping me put my cake in a bag and thanked me for coming in. I asked her name because she was very polite and displayed great customer service. Been patronizing this Bakery since 1989; lived in Howard Beach for 20 years When the original owners a father and a daughter team ran it for years that's when sugar bun was a 5 star + bakery !! Now in my opinion it's at best-of-three star bakery Café ; everything changes new owner he's not so friendly prices are through the roof; the staff that he has he's very blessed because they are very professional friendly and fast..... Coffee is fantastic; their baked items are very good; prices are insane..... I get it we all know that inflation is up everywhere & on everything but a cup of coffee and my favorite a tea biscuit toasted with butter and jelly $7.00 that's insane.. I still patronize this business on special occasions and holidays like i said all their bakery items are good but for a everyday breakfast stop definitely not.... They do offer Breakfast & Lunch they have a full kitchen & menu; They do have plenty of seating; Parking out front on the boulevard it's a hit or miss; we have commercial trucks so we can't use their parking lot in the rear.... The bakery was turned over three times there's a different owner. Do you own this bakery still or do you not? And as far as sky offering me 10% on my next purchase, like I said in my review, I will never purchase from there again. The cake was disgusting. I don't have to lie about it because I could buy that cake and 100 others from that bakery. the staff is nice and they work quite quickly and the atmosphere is okay for a quick cafe. However the reason they get one star is because how in your right mind do you charge $30 for two bec on a croissant and 2 medium hot coffees. That's blasphemy. It was decent but most definitely no where close to being worth $30. This has been in the neighborhood for years and they have been overcharging more and more. It's quite simply selfishness and greed and I hope they don't last much longer sorry to say. I would go to a Cart on the street any day it's just as good and so so so much cheaper and dare I say better quality. Ps. All the pastries taste like lemon and it's wack. I visited this establishment over the weekend to get a cheesecake for my aunt's 60th birthday. I purchased a Strawberry Cheesecake and my aunt loved it. I received quick and efficient customer service. The bakery wasn't packed but you could see a lot of the customers were enjoying their Saturday afternoon with some delicious desserts. I would definitely visit this bakery again to try other options on their menu. My aunt was definitely happy with her cheesecake for her birthday. I'm a regular at Sugar Bun, and by regular I meant I have orders delivered Really love what the new orders did to Sugar Bun. It's been a staple in Howard Beach for years and keeps getting better. We order two to three times a week at work, sometimes even twice a day. Everything I have tasted is delicious. They're hazelnut coffee is one of my favorites. I love both the breakfast and lunch selections. Depending on my mood my usuals are the breakfast special number 1, a croissant toasted well done with butter, a BLT, chicken fajita wrap or the kale and quinoa salad. I have also tried many of the baked goods here and you can't go wrong with any of them. My favorite is the Victory Cake, which is chocolate cake with whipped cream filling and a layer of chocolate ganache, it's incredible. Keep up the great work Sugar Bun! read more

Amazing Oreo Creme Cheese cake! Walked in a few minutes before closing time and the store manager honored the Yelp check-in deal- one free cake slice. With all the delicious sweets on display I couldn't resist but to purchase another cake slice along with my Yelp deal. My Pistachio mousse cake tasted good- with a hint of pistachio flavor. The Oreo cheese cake was so Good- I ate the whole big slice all at once. Definitely a repeat customer- will try other cakes as well. I work just a block away from SugarBun, so I find myself stopping by almost all the time and for good reason! I recently had their crème brûlée and mixed fruit tart, and both were incredible. The crème brûlée was rich and smooth, though I personally wish it didn't have the typical crackly top, but that's just my preference, and it was still delicious. The mixed fruit tart was perfect, with fresh fruit and a buttery crust that makes it one of the best desserts I've ever had. The atmosphere is cozy, and the staff are always welcoming and friendly. Everything at Sugar Bun looks beautiful. its clean. The baked goods vary from good to meh. There is a lot to choose from so you're sure to find stuff you like and stuff you never want to buy again. Most of the counter people are good. The biggest problem with Sugar Bun is the line system. Almost every time I'm here, someone has words. Doesn't help that I'm usually there during busy times. Either a customer is impatient. Or doesn't understand the line system. Or cuts in. Yes - there's a sign. Are customers confused by it because the sign isn't always visible? Yes. You also have customers who have ordered but then need to approach the counter again to get their coffee, sandwiches, etc. So I understand its not as straightfoward as it could be. The real problem is that the counter people contribute to the line problem by ignoring the line. There are sometimes 3 cashiers and they disregard the line and take whoever is the loudest or the pushiest because its the "easiest" thing for them to do. And thats when customers start to have words. The last time I was at Sugar Bun there was almost a fight because one entitled ( and lying ) customer tried to cut in and another customer wasn't letting them. I expected them to throw hands. I don't want that kind of stress at the bakery. read more

I had the Apple turnover later on in the day which was great. I wish there was a tad more filling but that's preference. The hot chocolate was okay. Sugar bun has a good selection of cakes, desserts, and other pastries. They also have a kitchen preparing a variety of lunch items. We stop by during COVID-19 to pick up a cake. There is no indoor or outdoor dining at the time. We purchased a rainbow cookie cake for take away. It was a good cake and all of our guests enjoyed it. I liked it too though I think I prefer the smaller rainbow cookies to the large cake. Unfortunately, a lot of the jam spills out of the cake when cutting it. They accept mobile payment. They close a bit early at 3 PM making it slightly less convenient than some other bakeries nearby. We will be back to try some different options. read more
