Everything bagel with scallion cream cheese

Located between Rego and Forest Hills, Bagel Chef is an unassuming corner bagel place with bagels made in house. I stopped by for my usual everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. The bagel was perfectly toasted with just the right amount of topping where it doesn't cause a cascade of flying debris with each bite. The cream cheese is light and on the fluffier side. Note there are no mini sizes, just standard sized bagels. They also have good coffee (both regular and decaf, hot and iced) and most importantly they take card with no stated minimum! [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is some seating inside, and staff are welcoming and friendly.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Local bagel spots deserve the hype too, and as much as I'd love to line up for [insert popular bagel joint], this place fills my bagel fix nicely.

I got the healthy human omelette which was good but was little dry and very thin definitely possibly the thinnest omelette I've had in a long time. It says it's made with 3 eggs but definitely didn't seem that way. The omelette also came with a choice of a bagel on the side, I got the everything bagel which was pretty good and crispy just the way I like it. The staff is very friendly and helpful. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Plenty of seating to go around and good amount of food options to choose from.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

For a small spot, they had a lot of options on their menu. Maybe their lunch sandwiches would be better. I wasn't feeling anything fancy so I went with a BEC on a roll. It was okay, it was a pretty thin sandwich. Maybe I'm just used to thick BECs but this one was underwhelming. Staff was friendly. Lots of people coming in and out for pickup orders. There are several tables and bar seats if you choose to eat in. Parking is difficult in the area.

Talk about going downhill fast. Firstly. Never any salt bagels. Never any mini bagels. Today. No onion. No garlic. Who wants plain bagels all the time? What is going on. And let's talk about quantity. Just a smear of cream cheese not the amount other bagel places put on. Then they have the nerve to charge for extra when they finally give you a decent amount. The other day the charge was 7.75 ish and I got singles back, no coin. Thanks for keeping my change - which I always put in the tip jar anyway. Oh well no tip that day. Unfortunately it is a convenient location but since I can walk about 4 blocks in either direction for salt, onion and garlic bagels, we will go elsewhere from now on.

Made to perfection! My bagel was toasted just how I liked it. The first, to the last bite, was juicy and delicious. Now that we got that out the way can we talk about the impeccable service at 9 am?! Like the woman at the counter was so bright and attentive. The man who took my payment was kind and funny. I loved it. The open concept and lighting made the place feel warm and welcoming. They also had great Celsius options (IYKYK). Can't wait to go back!

They are pretty precise with the weight of spread you order, as well. We ordered the egg salad, tuna salad, and scallion cream cheese spread. The egg salad and tuna salad were mild in flavor, not heavy, tasted healthy. I've only come on weekends, so there is always a line out the door, but there are many staff members, so the line moves. If you are ordering a lot of bagels, be prepared for back-up options because although they are constantly making the bagels on the premise, popular options do run out and you may have to wait 15min for a new batch.

They've done such an outstanding job across the board (customer service, price, food, etc.) that I am constantly thinking about going back. Located on the constantly busy (#2) 30th Ave, one wouldn't notice this place as being any different from any other bagel shop. There's hardly any seating but a steady stream of customers all throughout the day. The NSFW signage (#3) keeps the place fresh and interesting, if not extremely memorable. The first thing that is offered (and often complimentary) is their fried rice balls, dubbed "Ben's Balls" that are mixed with seasoned rice, kimchi, topped with a gochujang mayo that would wake up any sleepyhead. Each bite had a nice crunch, but the lingering effect of the kimchi makes it addicting. It is the ultimate complementary snack, a desired, potluck item, and frankly genius. This is not something I would ever consider getting out a bagel shop, but having had them I would gladly buy them by the dozens. Most folks are here for the Seoul Meets Bagel (SMB) and rightfully so: it's layered with chopped bulgogi meat, cheese, egg, kimchi, topped with gochujang mayo and is packed with flavor. While the dank ass pork sandwich is a crude name, but it's not hard to see why it's one of their best sellers. Their regular bagels are also excellent. Folks who are expecting a large variety of cream cheese may find it disappointing that there's only a handful in the display, but they do have lox, bacon scallion, tofu cream cheese, and some flavored cream cheese. For what it's worth, my toasted everything bagel with lox was fabulous. It was pillowy soft, nicely toasted, and extremely filling. Offering Korean savory bagels wouldn't be complete without actual Korean fare, which is also a part of their larger than expected menu. It includes items such as Korean fried chicken, kimbap, pajeon (various), bibimbap, kalbi, ramyum, and mandoo. This is in addition to the burgers, breakfast platters and sandwiches, and a number of pastries. The staff is mostly Spanish and English speaking, in addition to the owner Ben who brings Korean to the table. Prices are very reasonable for Astoria and I'm hoping they continue to stay that way. This spot is the ultimate neighborhood spot and I'm insanely jealous of all the residents in the area that get to enjoy this on the regular. ___________ (#1) Why mess with something that doesn't need changing? Oh, because palate + innovation. (#2) And incredibly gentrified. (#3) One sign reads: "My happy place is when I tell people to .... FU, KMA, MF, STFU, SOB, SMD." Oh how New York.

We came in and he knew we were first time customers from just us looking at the menu. We ordered the bulgogi and chicken bagel sandwiches, along with a side of onion rings, but afterwards he whipped out 2 free Ben's balls for us to try. They were really tasty and a nice snack if I didn't want a sandwich. While we waited, he talked to us more, especially since we weren't from Astoria but happened to be around there so we wanted to try it out. While we were waiting he also whipped out some nutella banana pudding and he told us to just help ourselves. It was super tasty and it was also funny because the sugar made me really happy since I was hungry already. He told me I looked really happy as I was eating it LOL, which I definitely was. After getting the sandwiches, the guy who was at the register also gave us 2 sour patch kids out of nowhere. The vibes here are fun and you definitely see Ben having fun while shouting orders to the back and engaging with customers. As for the food itself, the sandwiches were PACKED. It was hard to get my mouth around either one of them. I split them with my boyfriend so we could try both. The bulgogi one was really good but i felt like it could have used some kimchi to cut some of the richness and add a little more dimension to it. I actually enjoyed the chicken one a bit more because it felt like Korean fried chicken put into a bagel. It was soy garlic too which I love with korean fried chicken. I have also been meaning to go back because I have been craving that after having it. The sandwiches were so filling that even though we split both of them, I wasnt able to finish it and saved it for later. The onion rings weren't my favorite because they were kinda ones you find in the frozen section of the grocery store, but then again you wouldnt come here for those anyways. Aside from their specialty sandwiches, they also make regular bagel sandwiches and their prices are really great for what you find in NYC these days. I would definitely come back and recommend people to try their specialty bagel sandwiches.

Beware of Dishonest Business Practices…read more This place has a huge sign advertising FREE coffee with any egg order, so I came in this morning expecting exactly that. I ordered an egg and cheese bagel with salt, pepper, and ketchup, along with a coffee--since, according to their own sign, it was supposed to be free. The man at the register (who I assume was the owner) charged me extra for the coffee anyway. When I politely pointed out that the coffee should be free, he acted clueless and said, "Oh, I didn't know you wanted the special." Seriously? Why would anyone knowingly choose to pay extra for something clearly advertised as free? He then said, "Okay, I'll give it to you," but still charged me the full amount. When I asked again if the discount had actually been applied, he flat-out claimed that it had. I showed him right there that it hadn't, and instead of fixing it, he shrugged it off and said there was nothing he could do--basically trying to keep the extra money. At that point, I walked out. It's not about the price of a coffee--it's about honesty. If you advertise something, honor it. This felt deceptive, shady, and completely unprofessional. Disgusting business practices.
