We came to Howard Johnson's in the middle of a snowstorm on a Friday night and I was really, really happy that they had a room for us. This in and of itself makes me want to give them a higher star count...But unfortunately, what we found when we checked in was not so great. The front desk manager when we arrived was unfriendly and unhelpful. He basically took my credit card and gave me my room key, and provided no other words or conversation whatsoever. The hotel itself was kind of dingy; the back entrance was well lit, but it took them until morning to clear and salt it. When we got to our room, we were greeted by a sunken in bed, a broken down shower (it worked, but not well), and a single chair. Upon further inspection in the light of day, there were a couple of dead stink bugs on the carpet by my suitcase. Overall, I was happy we had a place to stay, but if we had to make the choice to stay in Newburgh again, I would pick a different hotel. What I can say was that the room cost in the neighborhood of $70. I'm not sure what the local going rate is, but I thought that was reasonable for even an iffy experience. I would have just hoped for $70, they could have at least vacuumed. Sorry HoJo, going to have to do better than that to get 3 or 4 stars out of this girl. read more

What bothers me about really bad hotels like this is that they maintain a somewhat decent rating on large booking websites. In fact this hotel shows "free breakfast" on the site I booked on, but they DO NOT serve breakfast anymore. First thing I noticed was that there is no ice bowl, cups, coffee maker of any kind, things that every hotel in the world always has. Then I found the ice machine broken. The manager says he is "working on it" but I saw no action. I turned the shower on and the handle fell off in my hands. The water ran yellow for 20 seconds. We had 4 people in my party and the body wash ran out before the first person could even finish the shower. The TV didn't work, DirectTV was down because there were clouds in the sky. read more

It gets 1-star for the amazingly super cold air conditioning in the room. This was the Howard Johnson's Hotel of Horrors. The hotel was dark and dingy, and the hallway decor did not appear to have been updated at any time in the last 30 years. They don't believe in air conditioning in the hallway on a 100°+ day outside. I was there during the July heatwave last week. The room appeared to be clean (Room 127), but we found bugs crawling on the carpet. A cockroach managed to find its way into my brand-new backpack and died in it. The room was in dilapidated condition and unsafe overall, as shown in the pics. I kept hitting my head on the towel bar in the bathroom. Holes in the wall. The front desk attendants were nowhere to be found to receive our complaints. They even had a plastic ice bucket on the front desk that said "Key Drop" on it. Nobody was ever there! I could not stay at this property more than one night. At the next property I stayed at in Montgomery, I told the front desk people about my experience at this Howard Johnson's. They said this particular Howard Johnson's had been condemned, and were surprised to hear it was reopened. This place really should be condemned. It's totally unsafe. Do not stay here. read more

When you rent a hotel and you know that hotel it's just as dirty as the streets that you come from you may not have an issue. The one that hotel changes are policy overnight and steals your money you might have something to say about it. I paid $75 for the room on a third party app which seats nothing about $100 being taken for my card on hold and return 5 to 10 business days after you check out. Factors I checked in here 3 days ago and had no problem checking in and checking out but their policies have changed unbeknown to the buyer. If you like them still in your money, cockroaches completely over you, crackheads running through the hallway, heroin addicts falling asleep right there in the stairs then come here and make yourself at home read more

The room was old, but clean. This was the MOST frustrating, irritating motel I have EVER stayed in. Don't stay here. The rooms were OK, some had not been renovated, Rm 116--see room first if you have to stay here. The bath tub old and slippery. The many towel-ed rack fell off when I took a towel (I had a screw driver, fixed it; they had a $100. deposit; room was only checked for return of deposit until the cleaners come at 9pm, but cleaners started elsewhere, so it was later), phone broken (waited two hours; never fixed as electrician off site so had to keep insisting on moving me to another room; front desk guy did not help me move and I can hardly walk) Manager off site too If he (John S.) is called, he does not call back. No business cards. Front desk attendant frequently missing as he was the only one there, cleaning fluid smell in room. The old fashioned door card did not work even after I got a new one. Had to ask Front Desk to open room door each time. Room had fridge and microwave. I didn't use so I don't know if they worked. TV list of stations did not include PBS on Sunday night (Masterpiece Theater; couldn't find channel as a result). In the room, there was no coffee/tea maker, but did have fridge, microwave, but no ice bucket, paper cup, tissue box, no DVD on the TV (though a large TV), pad of paper, pen--Front desk said these were not there because of COVID although they had lots of these items at the Front Desk and could easily have them in the rooms. Should give cleaners a list to check each day for missing items. Very little at the Breakfast: only bagels, English muffin, Nutri bar, juice (old OJ, awful taste), butter, cream cheese, no milk. The toaster did not work; he claimed it was new (as if it were MY fault), then announced that he would have to close down the Breakfast as a result. Not even cold cereal and milk. When I brought needs to his attention, I was treated as if it were MY fault and accused of 'complaining' The entrance to the motel at night is impossible: one cannot see the road when driving on the entrance road; couldn't see nor handicapped, all because of 8 spot lights directed towards you and your car, not towards the motel; can't see the circle drive or the lobby sign (put a spot light on the lobby sign). The lights attached to the walls of the Howard John are very bright and sufficient for the purpose to highlight the motel. You have to drive around to the back of the motel to find your room and on the way pass a large room with no curtains, where see an incredible amount of junk and falling curtain rods. If zero were possible, this is what this motel should receive. I cannot convey what a horrible motel this is. If these concerns were addressed (easily corrected), it could be a nice motel. Will, the regional manager, should spot check and visit. Pay a little more for a nice hotel. Red Roof Inn has bed bugs that came home with me (expensive steam treatment of my entire house as a result). Even Super 8 is better, acceptable. read more

I am once again updating my horrific review, based upon my horrific stay at the hell hole. its a shame that wyndham hotel is even associated with this dump. if you read my previous post u can see I have a roach problem since my stay from hell. once again my house is being fumigated for roaches. so I called the hotel again.... first no one answered... after 15 rings I hung up. then I called back and the same girl answered that I spoke with last week when I was told that Andre would call me back which he never did. after 2 more hang up he finally got on the phone. he still insists that he does not have Roaches in his hotel. that he has a exterminator every month and no roaches ....so he said to give him proof....no I did not take a photo of the roaches In my room or in the lobby or in the vestibule, then he said u have no proof, he also told me he was new to this hotel and is trying to improve it. LIAR. AFTER reading other reviews because he told me no one ever complained about roaches I saw that he was there as long as 2 years ago unless they had another rude manager by the name of Andre and several other roach complaint. because I don't have a picture of the roach in the hotel he has no proof. condemned is what this hotel needs and flattened to the ground. read more

If I could do below one star I would! Disgusting and telling everyone to go somewhere else. The room Smelled like mildew, mattresses old and junky, carpet felt wet. Then in the bathroom I discovered the maid had never cleaned the showed: hair and used shampoo bottles all over the tub. There was a bottle of water left from last person on the nightstand. If it weren't late, I would check Out and go to the Hampton inn across the highway. Also the manager won't be able to be reached until the morning. This was probably the worst hotel I've ever seen and I am glad I decided to leave without bothering to check in. I got in late after an event, but even still, the lot was so dark and I had to park in a spot with no lights. There were a lot of suspicious looking people just standing around or sitting in their cars, and I even watched one motorist who was speeding in circles around the lot. They almost hit me (twice) while I was parking. I've stayed at low budget hotels and know there's a risk in being out late, but I've never been too scared to even get out of my car. This is the worst place to stay room smelled like smoke no fridge or microwave with a broken bathroom sink. I couldn't believe the balcony windows there were dead flies in the racks of the sliding doors. The middle of the building had collapsed and didn't look like anyone was going to fix it anytime soon. RUDE STAFF/ NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY: DO NOT STAY HERE. The minimum age requirement is 23 which is annoying and strange. When I called to ask why this was and if there was any way around it the front desk receptionist was extremely rude. She said the hotel has experienced too many parties and would rather not have younger guests. She said this is not a family friendly hotel. Even for $75 on Hotwire, it was not worth it. The chair in my room was torn so bad, it appeared the previous guest had taken a blade to it. I dared not thoroughly inspect the bed, instead just said a silent prayer. I can't understand how a hotel with a franchise name can be so run down. Needed a place to crash for one night for a wedding so we chose this spot since the location was close to the highway and so many other hotels in the area were already booked, but honestly I expected more based on my experience at other Howard Johson locations. Pros- location was convenient to highway, wifi was suprisingly decent, free breakfast, room was spacious. Cons- The place is pretty outdated and smelled of disinfectant and marijuana (although the latter was clearly a couple of guests causing this). Cleaning staff were friendly but unorganized and not thorough. We arrived a little before check-in so we first visited a friend's room who arrived a day earlier. We showed up just as housecleaning was finishing in the room, yet there was still hair all around the tub and sink, surfaces left dirty. The next AM we had to turn away housecleaning staff trying to clean our room on 3 separate occasions all before we left at 10:30AM. Overall- it was fine, but for the price ($120) I expected a little better. read more

First of all I show up with my family we all got 5 rooms then my cousins got rooms I in the last 2 years have sent clients of mine here no joke 140 ppl. For example mta workers, shuttle workers, video workers, etc. NEVER AGAIN!!! I pull up there is a crack pipe on the floor right on the concrete!!! I go inside because I arrived late and a short woman with extremely short hair heavy set.. was very rude she was on her phone well excepting a collect call!!! Then 3 times I said excuse me I would like to check in well she didn't have me in the system which was bs because I called to confirm with a woman earlier in the day. After looking a 3rd time she found it. Now mind you I have met all the workers and never seen this unpleasant one before. I finally get to my room mind you about two weeks ago it was snowing. So I was cold and tired. There was a worker outside who was shoveling he saw me and asked if I needed help he was so kind I believe that was maintenance well he helped me right to my room like I asked instead of just bringing my stuff into the front. I call down my Internet wasn't working or tv and of course she was rude again the nice guy who just helped me came right to the room and fixed it for me. Now I remember the old maintenance man who was awful lol he used to band aid everything all my clients used to joke about him one time we had a leak and he just taped it and said You will be fine lol he didn't care. This man was so sweet and so helpful he even apologized for her and stood up for this woman talking about when it snows some get stuck working so long and everyone here is so nice and professional when you know darn well that wasn't the case but fine. Then the fire alarm goes off go figure anything else want to ruin my sleep meanwhile I have a meeting in the morning low and behold I see the maintenance man again coming to help it was 3 rooms down he was so polite and kind and worked his but off. At this point I need a smoke I go outside and he's talking to a fire guy. I wake up the next morning he's in rooms changing things fixing things the old guy used to dilly Daley I wish I asked his name I could get him a really Good job such a hard worker he is!!!! So helpful!!!! Ok so back to hell, well day two is here and come To find out the girl who worked that night was complaining on the phone talking about how much her manager reals of weed and drinks alcohol at work and smokes weed takes money blah blah then said how the girl during the morning is so rude and doesn't teach her anything they are so high they don't remember anything and then was saying they were throwing the maintenance dude under the bus and the owner is an idiot because they lie to him when it's them doing dirty! She knows the old manager and they set him up to lose his job!!! I don't know all I know is I know board members for Wyndham and they are very aware and shocked. They will be sending people to look and see what's going on! This place gives them a bad bad name. I send so many ppl family and clients to this hotel and boy will they lose a lot of business!!! If I was them fire the night girl and the new manager and the girl who works in the morning and get the old manager back there was never issues like this before. They will feel a big loss in revenue because of me such a shame. read more

Arrived late in the evening to a rude hotel clerk that had I guess just woken up. He was rude in every way imaginable, I had already payed through Priceline do I had to take it. Room was okay, nothing special but nothing horrible very adequate. In the morning I was greeted by the rude Indian owner who turned off the TV in the breakfast area while I was listening to it. I complained to him about the TV and the worthless PC in the business center that I was trying to use and he said that I could check out any time that he wasn't about to waste any more electricity, charming man horrible hotelier. I couldn't even get the PC to load one single website so I just gave up. Good thing I had urgent business to attend to, I ended having to go to the town's public library, another experience. In the meantime another clerk this time a woman who does not even greet guests with a good morning, was busy talking (ghetto style) to another employee who used vulgarities during their conversation in the middle of the LOBBY! Pretty bad. Looks to be an old dilapidated motel that got a thin HoJo makeover. Tub & sinks on the first floor wouldn't drain & it's definitely had some flooding recently. As a result, while fairly clean, the smell of bleach in the room was so strong it gave me a splitting headache after a few hours. Staff was pleasant & the bed fairly comfy, but not for $120/night. I normally do not write negative reviews as it usually not worth the time and energy. The place initially seemed ok, given that it's a low end hotel. However, the service was so awful except for at check-in, that they did not stay true to their initial impression. Besides the fact that both the sink and shower did not fully stay shut, we were left a note ( see pic) from housekeeping that they could not make the bed, because their were items on it. The only item left there was a T shirt. The worst part was when we attempted to call the front desk to ask for a late check out, and the phone literally didn't turn on. When I called from a cell phone and asked for an hour because we were sick, the staff-person told us they were full and short staffed on housekeeping, and she needed to ask a supervisor and call me back. She said until then she can gives us until 11:30. She didn't call back, but the housekeeper showed up banging on the door at 11 and told us we need to leave. We told the housekeeper we had until 11:30 and he said we needed to leave now. They were rude, unprofessional and made our experience that much worse than it already was, the only positive thing was that the bed was large and comfortable, my advice is if you have to go nearby stay at the Hampton Inn it's right nearby. read more

This is the absolute worst hotel I have ever stayed in. I got in late & the building just looked creepy. When I walked in to check in, there was no one at the desk & I waited about 10 minutes before someone showed up. I then walked into my room & it was terrible. It just looked so creepy. The couch was ripped. The bathroom looked outdated & worn. I seriously considered leaving, but it was too late at night & I was just so tired. Halfway through the night, the pipes started gurgling and it just added the creepy feeling of the hotel. The bed was comfortable, but I was woken up at 9 by housekeeping banging on the door. Check out wasn't until 11 & I was very bothered by that. I got i to the shower & that was the worst shower I've ever experienced. The ceiling tiles were brown and gross. The stopper in the tub was down & the water was gathering in the tub & so I had to reach down & try & open the stopper. The knob on the stopper was broken, but that was lucky because I got to use it to hold the stopper up to let the water drain because it wouldn't stay up on its own. All of that & the water still drained so slowly that the water reached halfway up my calves by the end of my 15 minute shower. During the shower, the toilet started gurgling again which really grossed me out. As I stepped out, the foggy mirror revealed "Help Me" written which really freaked me out because of the already creepy atmosphere. That also says that the housekeepers don't clean the mirrors...all around bad experience & I hope no one ever pays $80 to stay there ever again. read more

I stayed here last summer while working in the area and forgot to write my review..it wasn't very clean but I've seen worse..it is fairly inexpensive, my problem with this place is this..LOCK YOUR DOOR!! I locked the dead bolt and the safety latch before going to bed(about 11:30pm) and when I woke up the following morning at 6am the deadbolt was unlocked and the safety bolt was extended..someone tried coming into my room in the middle of the night and they had a key!! NOT COOL!! read more

Never again. Booked through Priceline so there were no changes allowed to arrival date, cancellations or refunds, or even a copy of the bill on check-out. Sliding glass door didn't close [outside temp in low 30's], clothes bar disconnected on one end and unusable, curved shower curtain rod drooped at both ends so floor got soaked, mat glued to tub floor mildewed because of streaming water, safe unusable, clock never re-set for Standard Time and alarm control was broken, so it blared at 4 AM [or was it 3?]. No ramp for elderly or disabled. On checkout we took one load of luggage to the car and room automatically locked, forcing us to ask surly desk clerk to authorize entry again. Complaint to parent company got a form-letter "We'll forward your complaint to hotel", then the form-letter response from miscreants that we could have asked for a room change. We were 9 PM check-ins needing a few hours sleep before getting up at 1:30 to make a travel connection. THERE IS NO WAY MANAGEMENT DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT THESE CONDITIONS if you read all the other reviews. How can the parent let this franchisee ruin what little is left of the Howard Johnson brand? read more

Honestly wasn't too bad. For what you pay for it it is for sure worth it. Stayed here for 2 nights and had no problems. The tub was a little work out and bathroom needed to be updated. Me, my fiancée, our toddler and family friend all stayed a week in Newburgh at this hotel. We came to visit family and spend most of our time in NYC. It was only an hour from the city. We checked in late our first night and the women at the desk was extremely friendly.. I believe her name started with an S or something. Our stay was great. We enjoyed our cozy room. Everything worked fine. Everything was decently clean and comfortable. My only complaint was a few of the housekeepers were very rude and acted annoyed if we were still in our room when them came to clean and asked to come a bit later. As well as a few of the mornings when we went to enjoy the free breakfast, some housekeepers sat and watched what we did and what we ate and how much we took. I was even told that I took "too many plates" when I actually needed them since I was bringing food back for my daughter and fiancée in the room. And while we ate I was stared at and talked about. Another quick thing was they don't have any working cribs for guests who need them which definitely caused issues when it came to sleeping at night. But other than that everything was great. read more

Was in town for a convention for a few days and had the worst experience with the front desk staff/owner experience in my life. Rude workers from the get go which translate to bug ridden rooms and stained bed sheets. Please stay else where for only $10-15 more in nearby hotels. After the third day I asked for an extra toilet roll since the house keeper forgot to leave one behind, the owner was very reluctant to hand over the toilet roll which was very peculiar and comical in a sense. The convention ended early which I had to check out a half day early and the owner instantly indicated "you wanted to leave early and we didn't make you leave early," just because he was afraid I might ask for a one day reimbursement. Strongly advise you to heed my warning and just book another hotel nearby which literally have about a dozen of them in the vicinity. read more

Bathroom was ok, one towel had a stain on it. The sheets had rips in them with couple of stains also. The chair in the room had holes in it. The hallways and rooms just need a major makeover and it won't be so bad. Other wise next time i would pay a little extra for a different hotel. During a long drive home at night, my fiancé and I stopped here. For $67 tax in the price was good. The lady at the front who checked us in hardly greeted us, she scowled at as during the transaction. We stayed in a large room with the king-sized bed. Walking into our non-smoking room we opened the door only to be hit with a lingering smell of cigarette smoke. The bathroom tub was dirty there was hair along the sides. There were yellow stains on the bed sheets, when we lifted up the sheets you exposed the mattress springs. The carpet looked very dirty as if it wasn't vacuumed. The next morning we saw a large dead bug by the window. You have to check out at 11am but at 9:30 in the morning they cut off the Internet access and at 10 the cable went out. For just sleeping several hours it was fine but could have been a better experience. read more

For sure the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. First problem, the room keys the front desk gave us did not work. (Not that big of a deal since this has happened to me at a good hotel before, but it was especially irritating because we had to stand in the hallway that smelt like cigarettes and moth balls) second problem, we got in the room and it was utterly disgusting. There was something in the toilet that resembled a bloody chick pea, there was what appeared to be semen on one of the lamps, (the lamp shade on said lamp was dangling, thus backing up my assumption that the substance was indeed semen). The rug had chewed sunflower seeds on it. The mirrors and sink were both obscenely filthy. There were stains on both the bed spreads. After 2 calls down to the front desk (2 calls because the first man was extremely rude and hung up) we got switched to another room. This room had numerous problems but at that point we had given up because of the poor service. To add insult to injury the free wifi advertised on the sign was a total joke and could not even load web searches for restaurants in the area. Worst hotel ever! read more
