Scenario: your 74-yr-old small-town living, farm-dweller MI mother had her knee replaced 10 weeks ago. She is doing well, still needs a cane but she cannot walk more than a couple of blocks. But, by god, nothing's going to stop her. "I am getting on Amtrak and coming to Chicago!" she tells you. My mother is nothing if not ballsy - or should I say "ovariesy?" I fret, "what are we going to DO with her? She can't keep up with us." This is where Howard Medical Company comes in. This place is the bomb! $15 per day gets you a 18" transport wheelchair (250 lb. weight capacity) - SO easy to fold up, has handles to carry it - fits into your Honda Civic tiny ass trunk. I talked to a woman named Bernie by phone - nice as hell - who says "we have plenty - no need to worry." They open at 8 am - I am there at 8:05 am - assisted by yet another wonderfully nice employee named Jim. He shows me how to fold it, adjust it, etc. This is too easy -pinch me, I am dreaming. I race home to our apt, Metropolis coffee in hand, and say, "Duretta Jean, get in the car - we are Chubby Girl walking at the lake!" I had back surgery in December, and while I'm easily able to walk, I really can't go too far (or too long) without sitting down. So, the only way I can do big stuff is renting a wheelchair. I went to Comic Con last weekend, and I was planning to rent a wheelchair through the convention center. When they finally called back with pricing (the day before the con started) I was floored at the price - $250 for 3 days. You can BUY a wheelchair cheaper than that, given a little notice. So I googled "wheelchair rental chicago", and Howard Medical was the only result that looked promising. I called and I couldn't believe how nice and helpful they were, and they had 5 chairs in stock for me to choose from to pick up the same day! They were also really helpful when we were picking up, and it was only $15 a day (and they didn't charge extra for dropping off on Monday morning instead of Sunday night). The chair itself had trouble with normal walking speed, we had to go slower than we wanted to, but that seemed to be the style of wheel - the chair itself looked like new. I rented a scooter to get around McCormick center. As you probably know it's a big place and to walk through all 4 buildings with an ailing back would not have been fun. They delivered one to my hotel and it was charged and ready for me when I got there. Used it all the next day going through the IMTS show and hardly discharged the thing at all. Made my show experience much better. I dropped it off at the front desk when I left and the whole process was most enjoyable and stress free. Upon our arrival, I discovered that the large chair was way to big, so I called Camela and requested a smaller one. She had a smaller chair delivered to our hotel room that very afternoon! First, this is a great place to RENT a wheel chair. Their rates are reasonable, their service awesome, and they are utterly dependable. The woman who handles these phone calls is wonderful. BUT, if you want to BUY a wheel chair, don't bother. The salesman really didn't seem to know anything about wheel chairs and their features, and could only find one to even try out from the mysterious back room. And then he fitted it with a cushion that was so thick that it came up to the height of the arm rests, and he didn't seem to think that was odd at all. And, to make it an even stranger experience, you have to go up several narrow and awkward stairs to get into the place. No handicapped access! Not a problem if you work out a delivery and handle your transaction over the phone, but ridiculous if you are thinking to make a purchase. read more

Howard Medical is not honoring their warranty. One year from the date of purchase they warranteed their product.. They sold me bad batteries and now they won't replace them! I bought the batteries in April, 2011 and in 3 months, the batteries were no good. The owner, Ross, told me to go away. Edited on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 Now I'm really angry. How much FUN do you think I have when I depend on a motorized wheelchari? How much FUN do I have when I have to spend countless hours looking for someone to replace my batteries, but they won't, because my batteries are only 3 mos old and are under warranty. My brother in law came to town from Delaware and I needed to rent a wheelchair. Howard Medical was so easy to deal with and they just took care of everything. When I went to pick up the chair it was waiting for me up front with all of the paperwork attached. I wanted to return it on Saturday but they are closed on the weekends. Don't trust them I should have realized that I couldn't trust them when they didn't leave a receipt with my new batteries. I bought new scooter batteries in the summer. This is the first time I've bought replacement batteries. When I purchased them, they didn't tell me that I would need to purchase a new battery case as well as new batteries if I purchased a different size so I purchased the larger batteries. When they came with the new batteries and realized that I needed a different size case, they did come back with new batteries and case. However, they didn't leave a receipt. The batteries didn't work right from the start, but my father broke his hip and so I didn't have time to deal with it for a while. When I called about the batteries, Howard Medical said they would replace them since the batteries were still under warranty. They came out and said that the case was wet but the batteries were fine. They put new batteries and case into the scooter. Later, they said that they didn't have any paperwork that they had left the original battery case and so didn't believe me that the case could have been wet from the start. Now Howard Medical says that the batteries weren't fine and charged me for both batteries and case. I will be looking at alternative medical suppliers in the future. I was visiting Chicago to attend an uncle's 95th birthday party and needed a scooter because of a recently suffered broken ankle. This happened just two days before the trip so I really didn't have time to do much research, I checked "Medical Supplies" on both Google and Yelp and found Howard Medical. I called them Friday and told Camela that I needed a motorized scooter for Saturday and Sunday. She wasn't sure that they could accommodate me given the lateness of the inquiry and a particularly busy time however, she said she would try. Sure enough a few hours later she called to say she had made arrangements and the following day when I arrived at my uncle's party the scooter was waiting for me. I used it all that day and transferred it to the hotel we were staying at that evening where it made navigating long hallways possible. Howard Medical picked the scooter up Monday and all was good. I rented a wheelchair for a local event in Chicago. I picked up the wheelchair at the site on Elston Avenue. The staff was very friendly and the wheelchair was in excellent condition. The pricing was very reasonable and I would definitely rent from them again! We were in town for the Blues fest and needed to rent a wheel chair. Based on Yelp reviews, I contacted HMC. The chair was delivered and picked up as I asked for. It looked like a new chair, but in any event was very clean and worked without any problems. The daily rental was reasonable, and with pickup and delivery added, the entire 4 day rental and delivery total price was very reasonable. Everything was done seamlessly online.
