I had heard a lot of good things about Howard's and had high hopes but was not impressed. Took forever to get our shrimp cocktail app and when we did get it the shrimp were room temperature. Also took forever to get our entrees not sure why since the place was not that crowded. My daughter ordered a steak medium and it was more like rare and very tough. My husband's burger was ok and his fries were burnt. The only plus was that our waitress( I forgot her name) was awesome. It's a one and done for this place! Never again!! read more

I was absolutely starving after a hectic morning, which involved too many phone calls and a visit to a government entity. I had to go to the UPS store (avoided rude unpleasant character in Shirley), and saw Howard's Cafe. Looked it up here, seemed great. Went in, and greeted by really NICE people! And they have GLUTEN-FREE rolls! Caryn came to seat me and take my order. She was the BEST! She didn't know if the turkey burgers had breadcrumbs, so I went with the grilled chicken. I also decided that I deserved bacon, so got the Mary, Mary topping--bacon, mushrooms, and sautéed onions. Entrees come with a salad, which arrived in a bowl topped by another bowl, with two things of dressing and croutons on the side. Caryn didn't think that I could have the croutons, and she was right. The salad was iceberg lettuce, which I hadn't had in YEARS, lol, with tomato and red onion. And a shaker of BAC-O's!! Oh my. Hadn't had those in 30 years. Very salty, which explains why. There was a choice of skinny fries (boo), steak fries, or sweet potato fries. I got the steak fries, which were wedges. Yum! The grilled chicken was yummy and generous, the bun was TOASTED (yay), and the toppings piled high. So good! A tad dry, but Caryn brought me some mayo. I forgot to order cheese. Ack. This is a nice place, with a bar filled with convivial locals, a cheerful bartender, and the marvelous Caryn. There are booths and tables. The iced tea came with two slices of lemon! I was SHOCKED when I got the bill. SHOCKED. It was $20.06 for a LOT of food and an iced tea! I took half the sandwich home because I couldn't finish it. I did finish all the salad--and Caryn asked if I would like more (declined)--and all the fries. Astonishing. What a great value!! That seems so rare these days. I had looked at the menus of a couple of other nearby places. Very glad that I chose this one. Sad that it's not near me, but I'll be back. read more

My poor Howard's cafe...You are not what you use to be. I don't know if it was new owners or just COVID hit you that hard. The burgers that we long for are no longer there instead there are frozen patties with plastic cheese. No more Kaiser rolls, they're replaced with store bought plain old buns. For a side, if you get steak fries you will get five overdone potato wedges. That was the hubs meal alone. The other things that was ordered were pretty on par with this and everything was at so much of a higher price point. For example, your burger use to come with a pitcher of beer/sangria/soda. Now it's an additional $3.50 and the sangria tastes more like a Shirley temple. The best things we got: the mini tacos are still on point, and ironically the kids meals. For $6.95 you get a full burger, so I'm not sure why the hub's was almost 20 bucks. So sad that this was a place I have such fond memories of. Small tables and booths in restaurant area. And the bar is as neighborhood feel as they get. Spent many nights here when I was in college at St Joseph's. 30 years later, came for a meal and a drink. Service was friendly and fast. The menu is typical bar fare, with a flare for value! Meals come with soft drink, huge salad and for $3 upgrade a small pitcher of sangria or beer, equivalent to 2 pint glasses! We started with mozzarella sticks. Nice size, generous portion and perfectly cooked. With 3 in our party we got a huge side salad to share, and couldn't finish it. This comes with your meals. You choose your own dressing and get individual bowls to serve yourself. I love this! The burgers are amazing! So many choices. I went with a classic..The Artie, which is cheddar & bacon. It was cooked perfectly! I love that they offer more than just fries as your side dish. Regular fries, steak fries, baked potato, sweet potato fries or linguini you can choose from. I went sweet potato and they were great. Our server was so friendly and attentive. We enjoyed reminiscing and had a great meal at a great value. I forgot how much I love this place. Came home to Long Island to visit family and had to visit this great place. Things haven't changed. Still as good as I remember. When you enter there is a bar area off to the right. Then there is a bunch of restaurant seating parallel to the bar and in the back. The place was hoping and the waitress non stop moving helping tables. We placed our order and got the all you can drink beer. When ever a pitcher was empty it was filled up nice a quick. I always love getting the burgers. So many to choose from. I entered and was seated pretty promptly with my party. We were given menus and never had a waitress come to the table. Five waitresses stood around the station talking for the majority of the time we sat there. After nearly fifteen minutes of no attention or service we got up and left. No one even gave us a look. I've eaten here before so it wasn't any busier than other times I've gone there. Very disappointed to see this is what Howard's has turned into. Went with a friend to get a hamburger . We waited quite a while to place our order ( we were going to walk out ) . We finally got to order hamburgers - my was medium and my friends well done . Burgers came with a salad - a wilted wedge of iceberg lettuce and a slice of tomato - croutons and a small cup of dressing on the side . My burger was good , but the steak fries were cold and greasy . My friends burger was rare ( she asked for well done) . She told the waitress she didn't want the burger since it was rare and didn't eat anything at all . I am happy that we weren't charged for the meal sent back but the waitress never apologized for the burger or offered another meal . I will not return. read more

A 4.5 star for sure. It's a dive bar with great food, kind of a hidden gem in Patchogue. It was busy for a Thursday--the dining room was full. The owner was walking around, seating tables, filling drinks, taking payments. It was nice to see him so involved, you could tell he cares about his business. I had the spinach and artichoke dip at mom's request and it came with bread which was nice as we both prefer bread to tortilla chips. Then I had the lobster bisque which was by far my favorite part of the meal. It was rich and creamy, it had a great flavor. The salad was kind of meh--iceberg, 4x5 tomato, red onion and croutons but the bleu cheese dressing was great. Then came entrees. My folks both had the Mary Mary burger and joined the clean plate club, they enjoyed every bite. I had the pastrami Reuben which was good but that's where my complaint and -0.5 stars comes in. The bottom of the sandwich wasn't grilled enough so it just kind of fell apart and they served the thousand Island on the side which was kind of weird. My only other complaint is that the server never came back to check on us leaving me and dad with empty drinks for most of the meal, but she was slammin' so I don't hold it against her. Used to be a special place. Not so much anymore. Service not what it used to be. I am, or was, a long time patron. I recall early on they offered linguine w/ clam sauce as a side dish to the excellent cheese burger w/ many toppings choices and the coldest pitchers of Bud. A "new" waitress actually argued with me that they never offered the linguine w/clam sauce. I said before you, maybe. She insisted she was there since day one. Very disappointed with Howard s cafe . We took my 87 year old mom who has trouble walking if we could sit in the larger table because she has trouble moving. First the waitress was very rude and said, what's the difference and the owner said we have to save these table . The place was empty. we have been going there for years. Just remember Howard's cafe you will be old some day. We then went to Cavanaughs in Blue Point, and they offered a table for 6 to us even tho they were more crowded. They didn't care at all. Who Knew? We were going to 89 North for a show and needed something rated well, with fair prices, and we all agreed to try Howard's and meet there. Man, just like the old days growing up! We were all blown away by our selections (Guided by our lovely waitress Valerie) Great Food, Hometown Atmosphere and cold beer. Service was great because we had to be on time as well for the show, and Valerie made it so! Can't beat the prices either, especially for the quality of the food they source. Now, all four of us are trying to think of reasons to go out to Patchogue again, We're in central Nassau. Even if we can't find one, Howard's Cafe is reason enough. There's a lot to try on that menu! Went tonight for the first time in a while. Waited 15 minutes for a table which I didn't mind. Ordered dinner and an hour later my waitress that was trashed walks over and says I'm sorry I forgot to put your order in. The first time I came here I really wasn't that impressed. I've since come a handful of times and haven't been let down since. Everything deserves a second chance! This is a really no-frills bar/restaurant that serves up burgers as their specialty. If you're not into a burger, you can sub it out for grilled chicken, chicken cutlet, veggie burder, or a turkey burger too (I think). Each burger will run you about $12 but before you go crazy...each burger comes with salad, a side (get the waffle fries and thank me later), and unlimited pitchers of beer, wine, or sangria (get this and thank me later as well). This could get slightly dangerous as they keep serving you alcohol as long as you're eating...and if you have friends like mine, this could become more of a drink-off than dinner. It's been almost a year since I visited, mostly because I moved out of state, but a recent trip to see mom created a prime opportunity to visit Howard's! The food was better than I remembered. I had the Something Special with waffle fries--there is much to be said for the waffle fries here--crisp but with the right amount of chew--just like a Long Island bagel. Mom had the lobster roll and was not let down. Two hot dog bun sized rolls came out STUFFED with lobster salad. Mom was impressed and noted that they probably don't make much off the rolls (she would be perfect for that old TV show Supermarket Sweep). Finally, my friend had the reuben, which was huge. Seriously, if you order this you should be prepared to unhinge your jaw because this sandwich is HUGE. I was lucky enough to have a bite and it was pretty tasty!
