Inconsistent at best. Decided on this review despite the industry hatred and even more-so, wanna be industry haters, so I gave them a dozen tries over the past couple years.l, but this review is going to be too long, and it's going to contrast my first experience in a poor way. I'll say the cocktail program in this "Patchogue-chic" spot is solid and fantastic; Laura has poured me great drinks with good convo. Past nights Anthony showed great knowledge and skills behind the bar and one night readjusted my understanding of the history of the building (which I dig, I love that Shands General store was actually the oldest building in town and I'm glad it's a nod back to that, with brick house stepping out and its' sign remaining on the back of the building) I should say that basically, for the majority, the front of the house is great; Very few exceptions there but they do exist. A while back I had wanted a fresh pasta and to show someone the place, but Shands had beef Wellington on the menu and it's one of my favorites that you really don't see everywhere or splurge for often. So there it was, I knew my order, started with a French onion and short rib soup, but this had ZERO SHORT RIB and was pretty lack luster, & come to think of it, one of the least appealing French onion soups I've had, real unfortunate; the crouton/bread was so deteriorated it was as if it had been sitting in the broth for 2 days. A good French onion really should have the bread floated when broiling the cheese over the top to form a nice crust, instead the crouton was submerged and dissolved as the cheese was just a melty glob of what seemed to be presented more like a mozzarella than Gruyère or Swiss, but it had a sharpness in there I just don't know about this execution I guess... there was a lack of onion, and a lack of flavor, it needed depth which maybe the short rib gives it if "the chef is feeling generous enough that night " to include it. $20 soups for the both of us and only one of the bowls had any of the short rib, unfortunately for them, the douche who likes to post on Yelp is the one that didn't get any. butternut hummus was good... it came out looking like they dropped the bowl on the way over but no big deal My first time in, I had a heavenly, light and flavorful, melt you into a damn puddle, pasta dish; it was the Mafaldine at its best) Really miss those duck wings they sourced locally. Sad story about the local duck farm "Crescent". He had to euthanize his entire population due to a bird flu outbreak, they supplied 4% of the duck to the entire country but sadly had to close down at the end of january; the staff let me know and I had to research it quick. (I imagine this is an issue sweeping the nation as we've all seen egg prices explode) The prep that Shands did on those things... they were next level! Typically you'd think a duck wing would be a little less meat or a bit tougher than a chicken but they did really well making them so tender and heavenly, impressive work honestly; maybe they can pay homage with some other type... I'd try some ostrich wings... it would probably be like a bbq rib or something... I digress. On to the main show, the Wellington... The portion was indeed large, it was a nice cut of meat but this really should have been showcased better. I'm sure the staff at places like this think everything they do is perfect and I'm just a jerk for mentioning my dismay here on Yelp, but they served a beef Wellington where the inside of the puff pastry crust was soggy... the outside crust was cooked but a great Wellington has a FLAKY crust, this wasn't that. At this crazy price your beef Wellington should be perfect or at least satisfying. The rest of the technique on the dish was fine, it had the right stuff which shockingly I've had wellingtons where they didn't do the mushrooms or didn't do the prosciutto layer so I appreciated that. I'm also pretty sure they used Duxelles and cooked them down wonderfully which is an easy step to miss that could ruin everything. Wellington ain't easy to perfect, I myself don't work well with puff pastry and I cannot even make a halfway decent Wellington but in my humble opinion, this wasn't too great either. Overall, would I suggest you go and spend your own $300 on this meal? No. I can't tell you that your money is well spent here. I've been to countless cheaper, nicer, and tastier places that don't have pretension baked into the price. Long Island can be a wasteland sometimes. Good meals I've had here included things like the hanger steak, pasta dishes, duck wings, Brussels and hummus.. maybe even their squash blossoms if I remember right... it's possible that wasn't them though. The brunch: steak and eggs were glorious, but even better were my nieces pancakes! Holy crap, how do they get them so thick yet so airy, fluffy, and dreamy? You can spend less if you take a train to Manhattan but have a drink here, those are never a miss. read more

Came here on a Saturday night for a private dinner party followed by some drinks at the bar. Off the get go, customer service was great and offered a coat check free of charge for my jacket and umbrella since it was raining, definitely helped make it feel just a touch more upscale than your usual restaurant. Our wait staff was nothing but kind and patient with our moderately large party and checked up on us without being overbearing. Ambiance is very cool, and definitely leans into its classic and nostalgic feel of its name, but not in a campy way. If you bring a date here, they would be impressed by the nice tile and wooden features alone, but it's the food that is really going to blow them away, but we will get to that next. The menu and cocktails do rotate seasonally a bit, so your experience may vary on availability for some items, but if you come back often enough (and spoiler, you will want to), you'll see them comeback! We started with Caesar salad, calamari, and Korean fried wings with the easy standout being the fried wings, a bit spicy but delicious but buyer beware they are messy (don't worry though, they give you moist towelettes to clean yourself off), calamari was cooked exactly how it needed to be and not rubbery, and the Caesar salad was as good as I've had it anywhere (although there's was made with tahini, giving it a little sesame flair). For mains, we had a pesto pasta, steak frites with an au poivre sauce, with sides of jersey asparagus and mashed potatoes. Steak was cooked just right and I'd dip almost anything in that sauce, and the pesto pasta was a nice lighter and herby balance to the meal. Fries were perfectly crisp shoestring style and the other end of the potato spectrum was the delightfully smooth mashed potatoes and gravy. Asparagus has always been my favorite green, and adding a cream sauce with bacon only makes this version of it that much more enticing. Capping off with dessert, we had the chocolate Basque cheesecake, a brown sugar pie, and a pistachio cake. Choosing a favorite out of these is like choosing a favorite child I'm sure, but I am still craving more of that cheesecake, RUN do not walk to get that at the very least. Parking can be crazy in patchogue, there is a small attached lot and some street parking, but I'd advise using one of the municipal lots nearby and walking a little bit for your own sanity. One of my favorite dining experiences in patchogue to date, and will be happy to comeback here to try more of the menu for any occasion! read more

I thought I would be sad to see the Brickhouse go, but Shands is an awesome upgrade and addition to Main St. I love the new vibe and life they brought to the space. I've come here a couple times, mostly for happy hour since they have great specials on drinks and food during that time (a Sunday happy hour?? sign me up)! There's a rotating list of cocktails as well as the staples. Last time I got a potato chip martini of sorts, because why not, and it was actually super tasty! Brunch is also a good time to come with a limited menu so you're not overwhelmed with a little of everything on it. I tried the salmon caesear salad which was light with a nice dressing. We also tried the pancakes which were fluffy and delicious, as well as the steak and eggs (can't go wrong). Bottomless mimosas are also offered for $25 additional. One of the options on the inKind app so we decided to check it out. Enjoyed sitting by the window and people watching a bit. Our waiter was friendly with a great sense of humor. Limited and somewhat expensive menu. Enjoyed both our entrees but the Malbec from France wasn't great and the chocolate cheesecake was way too heavy. The wine presentation was good at the onset but our glasses were never refilled (ordered a bottle) and neither was the water. As with most spots in Patchogue had to pay the meter to street park. I really wanted to love it. The menu is limited. Some of my items were really good. The challenge I faced was that this restaurant is super cold. We could not stay beyond eating our entrees because it was too cold to stay. The food was not hot either. My husband and I came here for a nice date night dinner. The food was great, our favorites were the mussels and toast, the wings and the mushroom tortellini. My husband ordered the ribeye which came with a delicious greens salad as well. The customer service was great and the General Manager Jamie went above and beyond to ensure that we were happy with our dining experience. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and very trendy. I don't usually get the chance to make it to happy hour, but when I saw they offered it on Sundays at 4 PM, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for a quick date. The ambiance is sheer perfection--beautiful decor and such a warm, inviting vibe the moment you walk in. We were greeted immediately by the sweetest and most helpful hostess, which set the tone for a great experience. We chose to sit at the bar, where Anthony and Olivia, the bartenders, welcomed us right away. They were incredibly friendly, attentive, and helpful. As first-timers, we asked for drink and food recommendations, and every single suggestion they gave us was spot on! I'll admit the cocktail descriptions initially made me a little hesitant, but we ended up trying three different drinks, and all of them were absolutely amazing. Made a reservation, I was running behind and informed the restaurant. They were very polite and let me know it was fine. Once I got there I realized I decided I wanted to eat at the bar. Luckily there were 2 seats available. The bartender was great. I ate here once before and was excited about eating the same pasta I had last time. To my surprise the menu changed. Which was not a bad thing. I ordered wings and lasagna and it was delicious. Initially I was bummed out because I was looking forward to the linguini I had last time. But completely forgot about it once I had that first bite of the lasagna. Once it got later I noticed a Dj putting equipment together. After my third " claro que si " drink I got up and enjoyed the music. There were some people dancing and some people just singing along. I didn't want to leave, the Dj was playing classics from all genres. Definitely will go back with a bigger group of ppl. On the chilly night of Saturday, February 7th, we hosted a well-attended surprise birthday celebration at The Loft at Shands General, and the night could not have gone better. The energy was amazing from start to finish, the kind where you immediately know you made the right call on the venue. Julian, Events and Partner, was absolutely incredible, both throughout the planning process and on the day of the event. She was thoughtful, present, and somehow everywhere at once, which made the entire experience feel seamless. The rest of the team was just as attentive, and everything flowed perfectly. The food was delicious and a huge hit with everyone. The room setup was spot on, with a long communal table paired with high tops that struck the perfect balance of social, relaxed, and celebratory. The live band was placed thoughtfully in just the right spot, present and engaging without overpowering the room or competing with conversation. The passed hors d'oeuvres were absolutely delicious and well planned, and one small but standout touch was having coffee passed by staff instead of set up as self serve. It added a polished, elevated feel and, just as importantly, avoided the inevitable late-night coffee station chaos. After the main party in The Loft, a smaller group decided to keep things going across the hall in The State Room, an intimate, beautifully designed speakeasy-style bar and lounge. Before we even made our way over to join them, Julian asked if she could get our drinks started and handed me and the guest of honor a generous pour of our scotch or choice. It was such a thoughtful and seamless transition. We wrapped things up downstairs in Shands General's main restaurant and larger bar with one final round of cocktails before heading out and officially calling it a night. Overall Rating: 6.5/10 Went here for a in-laws birthday. First thing I noticed was the menu was limited, giving me the impression that the food quality would be good ESPECIALLY because of pricing. My partner and I ordered 2 cocktails. I got the Lavender Town which tasted like flat mountain dew and my partner got a 'special' Christmas cocktail which was overpowered with mint. Mind you, they were pretty but SMALL. My appetizer was the French onion short rib soup and sadly was the coldest French onion soup I got in my life overpowered with a 'cinnamon' like flavor. I also got the Steak Tartare which was an experience, the guy comes to the table with a torch, says a speech and cooks the marrow. Call me uncultured but I thought it was a complete gimmick. It was like I was eating a raw hamburger. My Main entrée was the roasted salmon and I can't lie the salmon itself was perfect, but the potato served with it was identical to a McDonalds hash brown. Overall the food and drinks were sub bar, ESPECIALLY for the price point. The server initially seemed very friendly and yes was very knowledgeable about the whole mission/menu but after our main courses went MIA. The ONLY 2 good things about my experience was the salmon itself, and the fact that they DID offer the table complimentary desserts for the birthday which WERE very good. There are places that you go to for 'special occasions' that you're supposed to step out of your comfort zone especially for cost, but this was a bit too much. Best restaurant in Patchogue! The layout and decor is welcoming and tasteful. The huge bar is a centerpiece where you can sit and have a beer/shot combo for $9 (nice touch with the combo) or sit and have a full meal. My favorite meals are anything that comes with their fries! Their fries are so delicious with thinly shaved garlic and they give you an obnoxiously extreme portion, which is almost impossible to finish but gives you that old school feel of a place that isn't just trying to maximize their profit but actually care about the presentation and customer satisfaction. Definitely expensive but they so deserve the premium because they do it better than any other place in town right now! Don't change! read more

I'd rate Shands General four and a half stars. Modern bar and restaurant. The front of the restaurant has an open, sprawling window pane with caned chairs and brights colors creating the feeling of a large brassiere. The bar is enormous with eight beers on draft with a focus on craft options. Plenty of whiskey options too warranting a visit just for the beverages and upscale hotel atmosphere at the bar. In the back, there is a small wine cellar to pass which leads you to an intimate and dim ambiance reminiscent of a steakhouse. It's a restaurant of many faces that can accommodate various occasions. We sat at the front of the restaurant which likely drew inspiration from French bistros. Many smaller tables overlooking Main Street. Parisian style seating angled perfectly for people watching. It's a nice setup, but you're quickly reminded that you're in Patchogue after the family sedans with modified mufflers pass by. As mentioned earlier, the beverage options are good. Not the largest selection, but an intriguing variety across the board. I opted for an amber ale from a microbrewery called Ghost. It's a local beer which became apparent from the freshness of the brew. It was the perfect, malty option for the start of autumn. I was also impressed by the whiskey options. Again, not huge but a good variety of Scotches, Americans, and even some Irish offerings that I haven't seen before. I opted for a cask pick from Barrell Distillery for a post dinner finale. For food, we started with one of the daily specials - a small bowl of diced tuna with equally sized pieces of watermelon and a couple other ingredients. I don't recall if it was listed as a tuna poke or a tuna tartare. It was a small portion meant to be a snack. Next, we had the tahini Caesar salad. Fresh baby romaine with a bright crunch. Topped with crispy fried sunchokes, chunks of dill, and dressing. I liked all the ingredients, but I think the lettuce could have been more throughly dressed so that each bite was more evenly flavorful. We shared the seared scallops for our main course. The $36 order came with five smaller scallops on a thin bed of zucchini spaghetti and all dowsed with fondue sauce. Scallops were cooked perfectly. Excellent, crispy sear on the outside with still a rawness on the inside giving a desirable "fall apart" meaty texture. The sauce was rich and creamy. Very savory forward with earthy elements that were butter like. Zucchini did a good job of mopping up the remaining bits of sauce. I was still hungry at this point, so I ordered one more item. I had the honeynut squash hummus. A wonderful fall item. It's listed as a snack, but I think it bodes well as a dessert for those who prefer savory, salty, or earthy flavorful sober sweet ones. It works as a great starter for those that prefer sweet dishes. The hummus is sweet and had some baking spices which remind most of autumn. It came with cucumber, zucchini, pita chips / crackers, and believe a root vegetable on the sweet side. Service was attentive and accommodating. The food was paced nicely. I've been a regular at Shands General, visiting about 3 to 4 times a month. We typically enjoy grabbing a few cocktails and small plates at the bar, and I've always found the staff to be pleasant and helpful. The vibe is great, especially during happy hour, which is always a highlight. The drinks are solid, and I'm happy to leave a generous tip for the good service. However, after a recent visit just after Christmas, I'm not sure if I'll be returning as frequently. On this occasion, when we arrived, there were no seats available at the bar. We patiently waited, nursing our drinks for over an hour. Two seats at the bar were open, but both were marked as reserved. After waiting half an hour, a couple arrived and took one of the "reserved" seats, though it didn't seem like anyone ever sat in the second one. Once we finally got seats, we placed our drink and food orders-we realized that happy hour was about to end, so we ordered another round of drinks to carry us through. That's when we were told that this wasn't allowed and felt as though we were being lectured about not repeating the behavior. I understand that this must be a policy, but it was a bit off-putting. As a return customer who comes in often, it felt like we were being treated more as an inconvenience than as someone who regularly supports the business. It's unfortunate because Shands General has always been a spot we've enjoyed, but after this experience, I'm considering other options in Patchogue. read more

Fresh Air & Fabulous Food at Shands! While driving out to Quogue, my husband and I realized we were absolutely starving, so we made a quick stop in Patchogue for dinner around 5 p.m. tonight, Saturday. I'd just read a review of Shands General Restaurant, so we decided to give it a try. We're longtime fans of Patchogue and have enjoyed meals at Catch, Rumba, and South Ocean Grill, but Shands truly stood out. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and inviting, and our lovely server, I didn't ask her name :( was attentive without hovering. We sat in the area with the open windows, and it was great to enjoy the fresh air while we dined. We started with the Tahini Caesar and the Korean Chicken Wings -- both were flavorful and beautifully done. For entrées, I chose the salmon, while my husband ordered the monkfish. They were cooked perfectly, with fresh, bright flavors that made each bite memorable. Overall, Shands exceeded our expectations. Whether you're passing through or planning a night out in Patchogue, this spot deserves a place at the top of your list. We will absolutely be returning. Second time visiting Shands since the reno (former Brickhouse regular), and it was just as spectacular the second time around. Go hungry, because you need to settle in for a multi-course meal in order to get the full experience. Our server was super sweet and really informative; she gave a ton of recommendations and had no problem asking the chef for answers she didn't have. Much appreciated! Shands and the State Room upstairs are my favorite local crafts cocktail bars, so drinks are always a hit. Big tequila fan here and an even bigger mezcal gal, so I tried the Black Heat (blanco and a combo of blackberry and chili) which was awesome as an aperitif but too spicy to have with my meal; and the Jerk & Honey, a delicious mezcal concoction that was much more honey than jerk but no complaints here. Moving on to starters, the cheese plate was interesting at first but we polished it, so it was definitely enjoyable. Doesn't come with bread or cracker save for a light airy crisp of some kind that doesn't last you through all the cheese, but once you get into the plate you'll see bread is not really needed. The cheese was simple, delicious and fresh and came with a ramekin of fresh applesauce. We did think for a restaurant that works so hard to highlight local fare (and does an excellent job!) a piece of local honey would've been much appreciated on the plate rather than applesauce, but it was good just the same. Short rib in the French onion soup is a delightful touch that takes it above and beyond, and the tahini Caesar salad is far from ordinary. Lettuce mix includes red leaf and huge sprigs of fresh dill, radish and some lovely little crunchy somethings that were not croutons but just too delicious to wait for the waitress to return for me to ask what they were! Trust me, I could have, should have, licked the plate. Roasted chicken was standard issue but great, just nothing novel - but that was on me for ordering on the "safe" side. LOVED that they gave a little gravy boat on the side with broth; but the chicken was so so juicy that it wasn't even needed. Rigatoni bolognese is home made pasta and for another simple dish, was out of this world delicious. Farm carrots are 10/10 unreal, no notes. Beautifully fresh, roasted perfectly with a tiny bit of bite, and topped with crispy walnuts which I don't usually like but again, could've inhaled because they were so good. We could barely fit dessert but finished with a dessert cocktail and attempted to order an espresso as well but it never came. The one star reducer of an otherwise perfect meal happened towards the end when a large group next to us was having some sort of pig roast, inside the small dinner service area? The servers brought out a whole roasted pig on a platter to be sliced tableside and especially for someone who doesn't eat pork, the smell and really the entire view was overwhelming and offensive. We left payment on the table as quickly as possible and booked it to the bar to escape the smell, where the lovely staff comped the previously forgotten espresso. This place was recommended highly and I clearly see why! We came for brunch and everything we ordered we shared - and we all agreed that it was all was delicious. The food looked as fancy as the restaurant, and tasted just as fancy too. But the best part was the service. Our waiter was very sweet and patient with our indecisiveness hahah. The State Room has become a staple in my life, a place I return to time and time again. There's something truly special about this establishment. Personally, I first visited after a trip to Shands General, and I was immediately drawn in by the ambiance. The restaurant is so beautifully done--elegant yet inviting, offering a distinct vibe that sets it apart from the usual Patchogue Village spots. It's the kind of place where the crowd is just right--neither too young nor too old, creating the perfect atmosphere for a quiet, enjoyable night. Though we've mostly come for drinks and dessert after work, the experience has been nothing short of delightful. The Panacotta is a standout for me, although I do miss the strawberry one you used to offer upstairs--still my all-time favorite! We also indulged in the sweet potato purée cheesecake, which was wonderfully balanced--rich but not overly sweet, just the way I like it. Their drink menu changes frequently, which keeps things exciting. One drink I had was exceptional, with mole bitters--it was sophisticated. I believe it was called Yay Pepi! (or something along those lines ). My boyfriend opted for The Colonel, a more classic, bold choice, and he enjoyed it as well--a drink that's definitely made for those who like a strong, masculine flavor profile. I can't wait to come back and experience their brunch offerings--brunch is one of my favorite meals, and I have no doubt it will live up to the high standards the State Room consistently sets. It has the potential to be great. Shands General is gorgeous. The place is immaculate, the staff are phenomenal (seriously, the best), the presentation is 10/10. They've almost got it all right- Apps: hummus is great. The French onion soup is good but different- maybe not the best choice if you're expecting classic French onion. Duck wings are awesome. Bread is $8 which is kind of silly for 4 little pieces of bread. Cheese plate is small- order two if you have a large group. Entrees: salmon is underwhelming. Nothing special about the dish, wouldn't get it again. Pasta is pretty good but again underwhelming. Steak, ehh. Pork, ehhh. Honestly no stand out dishes here. The menu reads like a Michelin but performs like they're nervous in the kitchen. Dessert: pavlova is pretty good. Again wouldn't come back for it. Drinks: I actually took a picture because it was so absurd. The drinks are all ice. I got a mocktail and it was $12 for a CUP OF ICE. Absolutely unacceptable to charge $12 for 1oz of juice! Inconsistent. Some dishes were good some dishes were not balanced well. Some drinks were good some were not balanced well. Service was friendly, but not at all attentive. Never filled water entire meal, tried to take plates when were were still eating 3x, never offered dessert menu, never asked how meal was. Bar side had a beautiful ambiance. Would I come back? The service was great! The place is beautiful and we could talk in a comfortable manner. We both ordered one of our favorites, chicken and waffles. The waffle was cold with a small piece of over cooked, deep fried chicken lying sadly on top of the soggy cold waffle. Definitely not one of the chefs best. But we loved the atmosphere and service so much we will try it again. read more
