I used Howard's again to move my piano out of my house. It was a beast to get into the house and I was POSITIVE that there'd be no way to get it out. As previously stated, my house has 13 STEEP stairs. They showed up on time. There were only 2 men so I was afraid to watch. But after 20 minutes of staging and placing the piano on crazy piano moving specific tools and dollies, they walked it out my door and created and kind of slow controlled slide down the steps like it was nothing. 20 minute setup, 5 minute extraction. Five years ago I hired Rick to move my piano into my new house and today I hired him again to move it out. The man is like a combination of a wizard, bodybuilder, and physicist. Highly recommended! We had such a positive experience with Rick Howard. He did such a great job moving the piano that I have just purchased at the Salvation Army. He came through on a very last minute request, I called him around 3pm from the store and he was quite willing to move it for us that very evening! He gave me a very reasonable estimate over the phone based on our info which turned out to be completely accurate. He was very reliable, explained his timings, let me know roughly how long his current job would take and called me when he'd loaded our piano and was about to leave for our house in Santa Clara. Rick has a very professional set up, the piano was well strapped down in his truck and protected with blankets and the automated load bay is big enough for a piano with a very smooth action (no jolting), he has a big specialist dolly with large wheels that moves smoothly. He did everything himself and is clearly a very accomplished piano mover. He very carefully eased the piano into exactly the right position for me. It is surprisingly heavy for its size - an old solid oak console piano. Rick was very pleasant and polite, very professional and a pleasure to work with. I first read reviews about piano moving before I decided on which mover to select. When I read previous comments about the exacting nature of Rick's evaluative process and attention to detail, I felt confident that he was the guy I needed. Upon calling him, he came right away to my home to evaluate my steep set of stairs, carefully considering the entry and steep set of stairs, discussing necessary measures needed to protect them and the approach to ensure the piano could be successfully pushed up to the top. And as others have said, he has a calm manner which instills confidence about what is certainly a nail biter of a move when it's an expensive Steinway baby grand. He and his friend assistant Lonnie came over and methodically wrapped and moved it out of my parents home. He then taped my wood stairs and taped his dolly in case it rubbed against the stairs as they moved it up and into its now resting place. Rick ensured that there was not any damage to my stairs or the piano. I am elated!! He is a good, honest, and gentle yet strong man, perfect for this job!! My childhood piano means everything to me. It was manufactured in 1906 and has been in our family since the early 1940s. Moving it out of our home here in the Santa Cruz Mountains required maneuvering tight turns and stairs, a narrow steep driveway with his truck, and then a long journey to our other home in Tucson. Within a week of contact (I was working under a tight time frame), Rick returned my call, gave me a reasonable quote (moving a 52" antique upright), picked up my precious 'baby' and delivered it safe and sound, if you value your piano, I can recommend him hily and without hesitation!! My one caveat? Don't try to contact him via his website/email. Instead call him....you won't ever regret your decision to utilize his services. read more

I needed an upright moved down some stairs. Rick was careful, methodical, and graceful.

I am debating between 1 -2 stars. The upright Kawai piano was moved from Oakland to Sacramento. $200 flat fee for moving piano, $400 for transportation, and $5/step, with ~30 steps, comes to $150. that's $750 (although he never stated this number, he stated $650 and "a little more for the stairs"... there may have been miscommunication and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, lets call the quote $750...). I called Howard's piano moving because it is a licensed company with insurance, and in the website the mover seemed thoughtful. However, I was quoted ~$650 on a Friday even after giving the estimate of 20-30 stairs because I was promised he would "try to keep the step costs low". the move was to be on Monday. On the day before the move I was asked for cash: that's right, on a Sunday evening I was asked to come up with ~$600 in cash. That's a bit difficult, don't you think, with banks being closed on Sunday...why didn't he ask for cash when we had originally talked on Friday? I was able to get to the bank. The piano was moved, I told them to take their time, and they did. The good: the carpet of the stairs wasn't ruined and the piano, I think, is OK. However, due to the "immense difficulty of the stairs" in my apartment (I guess they are deep, thick carpeted stairs), I was charged $10/step in the apartment. I don't want to even look at the bill currently since it's so depressing ---I was somehow charged $150 extra instead of $50 (10*5). I'll come back and edit the review later when I the mental strength to look at it. It is not my fault he did not prepare, or ask me for pictures beforehand or dimensions (which I offered to do). If i had been told up front it could be as high as $900 and that's what it takes to get the job done right, I have no problem. However, I do have a problem with classic bait and switch. That is, I do not doubt the stairs were hard, however, I was repeatedly told he would try to "reduce the amount" the extra stairs would cost. If he had just upfront told me the maximum, instead of me saying "OK, it's $650 most likely, but might be a little more, right" and him agreeing and then pretending later that a $250-150 increase on a quote is only "a little more" this wouldn't be such a low review. It was heartbreaking to see the bill. I wish the number "$650" hadn't been tossed around so much, it gave me the impression of the move being about $650, regardless of what he might have said about the stair rates, which, again, he promised he would try to keep as low as possible...only later after the move when the stairs were "so hard" I was hit with $10/step, which should have only been a $50 increase, but somehow came to $150 increase. Also upon going to the website and seeing the other reviews: the two people that came to my apartment were certainly not brothers...I don't think the newest owner of Howard's piano moving is the original owner, and that might be why my review is so different from the others. Lastly, I finally had the mental strength to look at the bill: 200+400+280 ($10/step)+160 -140 discount. I have no idea what the 160 is for, when he was explaining the bill, I was so stunned I couldn't even do the math. read more

Rick and his assistant moved our small upright piano to an apartment with 30 stairs and some challenging maneuvers. They were friendly and helpful and skilled, and I felt that they charged us a fair price. They even came back into the apartment 10 minutes later - luckily they were still in their truck in the parking lot - to put coasters under the piano (that we originally didn't think we needed). Great, great great, guys helped out last minute, moved us 20 miles and had to drive back too. Only 2 guys but had the piano wrapped and tied down like it was a china teapot and same the other end, even gave me some coasters for future positioning. Very skilled and know their stuff.
