I brought my 2022 Taylor 618e into Keith Holland Guitars, and I'm so glad I did. Robert and TJ went above and beyond - they truly gave my guitar new life. New chapter .It got all the attention it needed and more. You can tell these guys care deeply about their craft and about people. Brought my Fender mustang in for a pickup swap and setup. They told me it was going to be 1-2 weeks (7-10 days) which is pretty standard, and they literally called me on the 7th day to say it was ready. They gave me a few other options to do a push/pull pot which I thought was cool since I hadn't even thought of it. Guitar plays great, everyone was super nice and I'll be coming back for a JB installation on my strat. read more

My kids have been taking music lessons at Keith Holland for about a year, and it has been a fantastic experience. The customer service is excellent, the instructors make music fun, and my kids are always looking for a reason to go in more frequently. Had some trouble with my pre-amp and brought it to Keith Holland. After extensive testing the technician couldn't find the source of the issue. He said that it would work some of the time but couldn't narrow it down. I was really hoping for a more definitive answer as I do gigs with this guitar and wouldn't want it to go out during a gig. read more

Brought in my 1990 Jackson RR1. I bought it used about 10 years ago, heavily used. The frets were in serious need of a level and I knew it. Soloing on the upper frets was frustrating, I ended up just putting it in the case for years. Last time I had a guitar fret level was in the early 1990's on another Jackson guitar. Unfortunately, that luthier passed away and I had to find a new one. I figured I would test out this shop on my least favorite guitar. Well, they did a fantastic job! The frets are smooth and silky, action is where it should be. It responds well to a very light touch. Honestly, I have not picked up a guitar since the CZU fire. I lost all my inspiration and severe depression set in. I tried my freshly serviced guitar at the shop and I was embarrassed how bad I was playing. However, I knew it was serviced perfectly. I got the guitar home, put my amp and effects rack back together. Put the strap on the guitar and started playing. My fingers and strumming loosened up and before I knew it, I had been playing for 2 hours! This guitar is an absolute pleasure to play, now. I finally have some inspiration back and I am going to practice and get good, again. Right now, they have my Grand Father's banjo from 1932 to be restored. I know it is in good hands. I'm slowly going to start bringing over the rest of my prized guitars to them. This place is in line with going rate of other shops, by the way. My acoustic needed new strings and a check up. When I picked up the guitar I was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in playability and tone. In addition, there were some scratches on the finish that Robert removed with a series of products carefully applied to the finish. I love the look and sound of my new old guitar. I spent $2400 with my credit card over the phone with the agreement my employee would pick up the amp the next morning. I gave them my employee's name which is not a very common name. After driving 400 miles from Los Angeles to pick up the amp the store called me and told me they suspected me of some kind of fraud and would not give my amplifier to my designated representative. The store manager decided to play amateur detective and tried to put me through 20 Questions like it was some kind of a game because he has Nothing else to Do I guess. I begged him to give my amp to my people but he got mad because I would not describe every detail of my employee's physiognomy and hung up on me. This is not the kind of treatment I expect when I am spending that kind of money. So then I got on the phone to the shop and ask the guy who picked up if he was the manager which immediately made him angry because he righteously and indignantly insisted he was the owner like that's better or something. He also gave me a hard time. I don't get it. I will certainly avoid that store from now on. read more

These guys rock. Robert jams on the guitar, and every time I've gone in there they've helped me out. The last time I was in, I just needed valve oil for my son's brass instrument. Previously we've rented instruments here, and when I needed more specialized service they sent me to a competitor who had what I needed. I brought in an old MXR Chorus pedal yesterday because I heard Robert knew how to work on pedals. He cleaned it out, fixed one of the knobs and spent about half an hour demonstrating how a true stereo chorus pedal functions - and didn't even charge me for it. I also got my Stratocaster cleaned up, restrung with a new pickguard added a few weeks prior and was very satisfied with the service. I highly recommended Keith Holland Guitars. read more

Facebook informed me this morning that I first went to KHG 13 years ago. Honest and direct are the two words that come to mind first. Quality repairs that the shop backs up are my consistent experience. Most recently, Robert and the crew took care of the non-functional electronics in my brand-new archtop. Over the years, they have done magical fretwork on my semi-hollow. Keith fashioned a Corian bridge saddle for my Guild acoustic, transforming a middleweight instrument into a lifelong companion. He later repaired the shrinking binding on that same Guild. It is a friendly shop where a musician feels at home. read more

I called to bring my guitar to have pickups changed. They quoted me a fee which is higher than what I have paid at other locations but thought I would go ahead because they are close by. I asked how long it would take and was told they are backed up but for an additional fee, they could put a rush order on it. My gut told me to take my business elsewhere. read more

Robert's response to his poor review just comfirmed his lack of customer care and is full of distortions of reality. I have been a steady customer of Keith Holland guitars for about 35 years and have bought about 6-8 guitars from the shop myself and have referred many musicians friends and family to the store. The last guitar Keith fabricated for me was designed for my needs by Keith and myself. It was delivered to me at the shop. The first issue I had was with the Mastery Tremelo arm which would pop out during use. They fixed it by permanently locking it in place. A less than desirable fix .The second issue I had was the pickups recommended by Keith. I asked Keith to change them out after several weeks of trying them out.He charged an additional $300 to route out the guitar for humbuckers which I paid. When I received it back the input jack and toggle switch were not tightened and had to have the shop tighten them.I had issues with the Volume and tone Pots which were very stiff and made it difficult to do Volume Swells which is imporant to my style. Robert's tech changed them out at my expense. I paid for the new pots and the installation to the new owners.. After the install of the pots the guitar would just intermittently stop sending signal. It took several visits to the new shop to find out that the grounding was installed incorrectly. Lastly I had problems with string breakage. I play a blues style bending usuall 1/2 to 1 step. I have broken 13 e strings on that guitar which is 13 times as many as I usually break in a year. They all broke at the Mastery Tremelo Bridge attachment indicating a design flaw. I actually love the instrument as it does what I intended. I can not play it at gigs due to the string breakage issue which was not fixed after 2 more visits to the shop. I had about $ 3000 invested in the instrument and they recommended I sell for about $ 1800 minus their commission. Keith had made 2-3 similar designed Jazzmasters which were listed and sold for $ 2,300. I asked Robert to list it at that price as mine had better hardware. I checked their website and was never able to find my guitar listed.After months of no interest I asked them to lower the price about 3 weeks ago. I finally saw it listed at the discounted price 2 weeks ago. But was asked to take it back last week. Robert bought the store and only wants to deal with it's assets. He should know that he also bought it's liabilities and is now responsible for the store's reputation. It is unfortunate that Robert has turned a long term loyal customer away in such a derogatory manner. read more

I have a Martin guitar but could not get it to sound good playing open chords after the 6 strings were tuned accurately with a strobe tuner. After much research, I found that this could be an innate problem of guitars because of various compromises in the guitar design. I also discovered the idea of a compensated nut that corrects some of these problems. When I emailed Keth Holland Guitars about this problem, Keith Holland himself answered the email and knew exactly what I was talking about. He told me about the "Earvana" compensated nut and that this could correct the error I was hearing. I think I had about 10 back and forth emails with Keith before deciding to bring in my guitar. After installing the Earvana compensated nut, removing the slight bow in the neck, and lowering the string action, my guitar sounds great in all the open chords. And because I was nervous about going in the store during our COVID-19 scare, they came out to my car in the parking lot to pickup and deliver the guitar. Had a great experience here getting some work done on my Strat - pickup swap, replacing the nut and blocking my trem. TJ was super cool, knowledgeable and you can just tell this is a tight knit shop that is connected to the community. Got my guitar back and everything was perfect and plays like a dream. A wonderful little guitar and amp shop! This is a great place. They always have really high quality guitars and amps both new and vintage. They have affordable items as well as boutique and rare items as well. They do not have a huge stock but what they do have is well curated and very high quality. The staff there are very nice and the owner is extremely friendly and a pleasure to talk with. They also make their own high quality guitars, do guitar repairs and amp repairs. Marty has been very helpful every time I have gone there and Randall Wetmore is an amp repair master. Their amp repair warranty means that the job will get done right no matter what. They live up to that and I am very impressed. Randall has worked on two of my vintage Fender tube amps in the past year or so and one of them was "haunted" so to speak but Randall did what you might call a vintage amp exorcism (this is only a metaphor of course) and I am very happy with his work. Both of the amps I took in, a 1972 Pro Reverb and a 1965 Showman both sound and function much better after Randall has done his magic. The Showman sounds so high fidelity now it seems like it probably sounds better than it did brand new in 1965! (I was not born yet so I cannot say for sure). I highly recommend Keith Holland Guitars as well as Randall Wetmore's amp repair service through that shop. I hope to buy a guitar from them at some point too. Every time I go there it is fun to see what amazing new (or vintage) goodies they have. Some very rare items pop up there so grab them if you can. I have so much to say about these guys. This shop is where I bought my first acoustic guitar about 5 years ago. Sam Eigen is my teacher, and has always made it incredibly easy to stay passionate about playing music. I got my first electric guitar here as well about 4 years ago. This guitar has been my absolute best friend for years now. The gentlemen who work here are truly incredible people. Marty helped my parents surprise me with the amp of my dreams this year. They were slick about it and made it an incredibly special experience. I've lived in other towns over the last few years, in Santa Barbara and Nashville, and gone to every guitar shop in those towns. Keith did sell the shop to Robert. However , Robert has keep thing going as well, or perhaps even better than they were before. And, if you want a custom built guitar , Keith is building some great stuff. The only complaint I ever had over the years there was with the amp tech , I think his name is Randall He claimed to have fixed my 2 Mesa Subway Boogie amps - however neither was really fixed. I don't know if Randall is still doing amp repairs there , you might want to check. If think Randall knows his stuff, but he is not as attentive to work he finds boring. One thing Robert did when I needed another amp repaired is, he farmed to work out to a different tech . That repair was good. Overall - Keith Holland Guitars is a great place. Robert, the guitar techs, Boran, Jackson, and the rest of the staff (Marty and others ), are great. They do great work on my guitars. Today's consultation was a bit disappointing to be honest. I'm not an expert and I understand that, but I still think you should listen to what my problems with the guitar actually are before recommending 10 other things you would like to do to it. I also think it is not acceptable to whip out a screw driver and start adjusting my guitar without asking first if I'm ok with that. Those might be small things, but they don't give me the confidence that you will take care of the instrument the way I expect. read more

A week after I picked up my guitar, I received a call from the tech checking on my satisfaction and whether I had any questions. Talk about amazing service. Brought in my guitar to have a faulty machine head replaced. I worked with Borin and he suggested replacing all of the heads to ensure continuity with tuning performance over time. I agreed, and was appreciative of that since the last two times the heads failed another guitar shop that I used to go to just replaced the same head without further suggestions or insight for why the heads are failing, and how to avoid the headache in the future. Borin made some suggestions for higher quality heads, and strings and I left my love in his care. He told me they were pretty busy at the time, and the turnaround would be about a week. However, the guitar was ready in a few days, which made my day because I was starting to get separation anxiety. Thanks, Borin (and Keith Holland crew). read more

I brought in two more guitars last week for some fret work - one was a Les Paul Vintage Mahogany that had sharp frets out of the factory - when you slide up the neck, it feels like you're hitting multiple speedbumps on the way. The second was an old '58 Guild, with rusty nasty frets. When I picked up my guitars this week, the Les Paul was nicely set up, frets were smooth, and action was great. Then I checked out the Guild - oh wow. Not a trace of rust on the frets anywhere, nice and shiny and smooth - I couldn't believe how different the guitar felt. And the action was set up just right, saddles correctly slotted (the D string was sitting lower than the rest of the strings) so now the strings follow the correct radius. Now, this is the best part - the guitar cases were pretty dusty when I brought them in. The shop tech DUSTED THE EXTERIOR OF MY CASES and they came back looking brand spanking new. What in the world, who does this?? Awesome. That's service above and beyond what is required. I don't have a lot of disposable income to put into this hobby anymore, but having said that, Keith Holland's Guitar Hospital is a cost I'm willing to save up for. What a disappointment. Keith Holland isn't actively involved with this shop anymore. He sold it and the new owner, Robert, is dragging Keith's name through the mud. On August 28, 2021 I brought in 3 amps to be repaired by KHG amp tech Randall Wetmore (Xenrelic) and repairs were made to 2 of 3 and returned in a timely manner. I Contacted KHG for an update on amp 3 and was told Randall was no longer affiliated with KHG and my amp had been taken off site by another amp tech, Mike. I'd call from time to time for an update and no one seem to know much. On 1-17-2022, 4+ months later, I show up at KHG and got the run around from owner Robert and I left disappointed and frustrated. Finally got a text from amp tech Mike who claimed KHG had given him the wrong phone number and that parts were back ordered. By now I'd had enough and just wanted my amp back which took another 3 weeks of BS. Finally got my amp back today after 5+ months of hassles and excuses. Amp never was repaired and the work order showed that the replacement parts (pots) had been ordered on 1-20-22 contrary to what I had been told. I understand that there are supply chain issues and back orders but honest communication and valued customer service could have avoided a 5 + month fiasco and this review. read more

I've been in to Holland's shop a few times and have always come away satisfied and impressed with the help. Keith is very knowledgeable about fine tuning components and matching setup to style from what I hear. I will be seriously considering getting a custom axe from him as it may come out cheaper in the long run to getting a Fender Strat and then tweaking a few things to hit what I want. We'll see. I also appreciate the help from Robert Whitmayer (sp?) who plays a great gypsy style and knows his blues and electrics too. Just picked up my amp. Wow. I had it repaired several years ago by a dude in the city...he told me there were things not fixable, so he mickey moused around it and gave me a functional, but highly compromised Fender Blues Deluxe. After dropping it off with Keith, I gained massive confidence. I got the call...all is fixed. New pre-amp tubes, fixed PCBs, knobs, etc. All the things that 'couldn't be fixed' are now fixed and better than iwhen it was new. I'm blown away by this shop. Only downer is that they're all the way down in Los Gatos, which is quite far from my east bay residence... Perhaps I should just move and solve for that.
