We went to Howard's Pub for a late lunch. Everything that we ordered was very good. We started with the tuna bites - tasty and came with two good sauces. We shared a fried oyster basket and blackened mahi sandwich. The oysters were delicious and battered well. Fries were fresh cut and great. The blackened mahi was nicely seasoned and seared to perfection. NC beer selection was decent. We finished with a piece of key lime pie that was just what I wanted. The place is nice and i liked the beer.I did not like how we had a party of 12 and the place was empty and they would not let us sit until we were all there.We would have sat and had a beer, but no, we just had to keep moving for new people coming in. Food is amazing, best burgers and fries on the island. Service is great too, staff there are swift and understanding to serve guests in a timely manner. Our waiter was amazing, wish I remembered his name. My family loved the king crab legs, and the broccoli was cooked perfectly. I ordered two double shots of patron and it came very big but they both had to have been cut with water it was not good at all. To have paid what I paid I would have liked to feel the alcohol. Being on vacation, I always enjoy getting to try new restaurants. Serval members of my family had enjoyed eating at Howard's in the past, so they suggested we all try it. Out of a party of six, we all agreed that the food was very good. I had the shrimp basket, my son had Oysters Rockefeller, my daughter also had the shrimp basket, others had various selections. Excellent service and great food. Lots of choices. Teriyaki tuna sandwich and the cold bean salad were tasty. Onion rings were crunchy and hot. But $8 seems pricey for onion rings. Caesar Salad was good with grilled chicken. Laid back atmosphere and a very long bar with ample seats. Opens daily at 11am, but closes at 9pm, like most places on the Island. Why??? Island noise ordinance is what we were told. Of course we bought a t-shirt! Got a Kids really fun one only $12. There is a kid menu on the regular menu. Went here for dinner had the conch fritters for appetizer and fired pickles, they were not bad a little skimpy on the food. Hallie was our server and she was good. My daughter had a grilled cheese and Mac and cheese for dinner. My son had the fried shrimp that was served with fries and again a little skimpy on the shrimp. My girlfriend and myself shared a crab cake platter 2 were served with fries and coleslaw. Not bad food but the prices were high and the food was skimpy. Lots of bar decor in restraunt. We ate at Howard's a number of years ago on our last visit to Ocracoke. I remembered it as being a hopping place with decent food. Sorry to say, it was neither hopping, nor was the food worth the price. In our party of five, no one was wowed by their dinner. We have restaurants that good or better for less money at home. Been here many times. Always been a good experience. Food comes out quick and usually you are seated quick. My waitress was better than I've had in the past! Atmosphere is always jovial and fun. Food was good, hot and decent flavor. It's what you would have an image in your head of what the food would be when you are out front look at the place. When you visit Ocracoke this is just one of the places you have to check off your list. It's a very stereotypical beach-tourist style pub and restaurant, walls loaded with license plates, t-shirts, and colorful posters. Lots of different beers on tap. I had the fried scallops basket, my husband had the fish and chips. His portion seemed disproportionately small to the price and what you normally get at such a place but it was tasty. I think Howard's is a safe choice because you know exactly what youre getting. It's the first place you hit once you come off the ferry and it is always packed which is a good thing for them but I dont think the food is anything in particular to write home about. Nothing on the menu really knocks your socks off despite the price but it's not bad food by any means. For what its worth, my wife's family loves it here and has been coming here for years. Food is your traditional American food (burgers, wings, fried shrimp) and is about what you would expect. No complaints on the food itself though I think it's just hard to get excited by your standard American bar food unless its something unique or special which this is not. Bottom line, Howard's is a good, *safe* choice for the less adventurous that wants somewhere easy and predicatable. read more

Our group ordered a dozen raw oysters and they came without ice so they were basically room temperature when they arrived which isn't optimal. The service, although they were very kind and friendly, was also pretty bad. He brought a beverage and said "if no one else comes to serve you I will." He finally returned, took my order, and was slow to deliver, slow to check on me and slow to refill my beverage. Every year I come down to Ocracoke on vacation. This place is always a must stop twice kind of place. I love it here. Always have, and I'm pretty sure I always will. Read the whole way for the reason for 5 . They have a ton of license plates on the walls and signs everywhere, and it is really cool. As you walk in you pass through a room with foosball, and ring toss. I have always found ring toss as gimmicky. They have indoor dining, screened in outdoor dining, and a roof to rummage around. One year I got stuck up there somehow, and it is always a good memory. The reason I have given them 5 stars, is because of their absolute KILLER macaroni and cheese. It is a side, but it is so good sometimes I just order it as a main meal. But how could I? When they have AMAZING hot wings! their hot wings a close 2nd best wings I've ever had! The real reason. The one that keeps me coming back every time. THE PEANUT BUTTER PIE! This is the most delicious pie I have had! I've been around the states and no one has topped their chocolate peanut butter pie. I have always said asa a joke that if I was ever on death row and they asked me what I wanted for my last meal, I would say Howard's pub mac and cheese, and their peanut butter pie. read more
