Lived nearby for ages but it took me a while to come visit for some reason! I like how the selection of food products feels really thoughtful and curated - I like to wander the aisles and discover new brands and try snacks I've never heard of! And they carry Jeni's ice creams, which is fun b/c you can't find those everywhere. Their baked desserts area is solid, I've tried a few of the fresh-baked cookies (sugar, peanut butter, and white choc macadamia; all were good) and if you get them in the morning sometimes if they happen to have been made that morning, the textures and flavors are great, and the prices totally fair. Today I tried the deli for the first time and my goodness - 10/10. I've walked past Howie's many times and smelled something reminiscent of mouth-watering Italian food, and have always been curious. Now I know their cooking tastes as good as it smells! I tried the chicken thighs grilled with black pepper, which were seasoned so well, tender, and not too salty or sweet like many restaurants will do nowadays - it was perfect; plus that distinctive smoky grilled/charred flavor was present thanks to the fact that they literally grill their meats themselves. I also tried one of their sausages - didn't get the name, but it was seasoned beautifully with peppers and all kinds of herbs and spices, and it had a great texture and bite. Prices were pretty good. I'm totally coming back for more of the deli - they really know how to cook there! My wife had a unfortunate interaction today with Kristen the owner of Howie's. She was overcharged $3.75 for three cookies. Mistakes happen and it was not a big deal but still. My wife returned a short time later and spoke with Kristen who had an attitude, was rude and not accommodating at all. All we needed was a refund and an apology. We got the refund but Kristen felt an apology was not necessary. Very sad for the owner to act this way. Terrible business model. We have been loyal customers for 25 years but will no longer be shopping at Howie's. read more

A neighborhood market with a selection that rivals major supermarket chains, done in a focused and better way. Produce and Pantry items have a concise selection of items. The highlight of this place is Alexander's Meats. Within the market are prime cuts of meat. Everything from dry-aged beef, poultry, lamb, A5 Wagyu, and seafood is available. You will also see that much of their inventory is from Harris Ranch. The deli onsite also has hot foods, deli sides, sandwiches, and BBQ. Inquire about catering options for all your needs. This is a small market that has a little bit of everything. It is not like your typical market (Albertsons, Ralph's, etc). You wait in one line for the meat/seafood/ready to eat area and you wait in one line for the cashier. They have a beverage aisle that contained some "vintage" pop and had some higher quality soap brand (dr. Sasquach) on their shelves. The staff at every station is very nice, polite, and patient. The ambiance is casual and noise level was very low compared to normal supermarkets. Their ready to eat area has daily specials and always have a great selection to choose from. I remember having pot roast on Mondays. We were exhausted and didnt want to make dinner so we bought some tri tip, potato salad, mac and cheese, and some other pasta to take home. Their price is a little high, but what I really appreciated was the cashier separating cold, room temperature, and hot items together. When you walk into Howie's Market you immediately notice that it is different! The produce glistens with freshness. The aisles are filled with quality products and hard-to-find items. Limited selection of certain products is limited but quality is apparent. Unique selection of cheeses. Ready-to-drink beverages filled with protein and nutrients were available in the coolers. In the dry goods section they even had Dodger collectibles available. There is a complete liquor store available through an arch near the bakery. The fresh baked items were enticing. Customer service was outstanding. Friendly clerks were available at checkout. Be aware that Alexander's Prime Meats and deli is located within the Market. The whole shopping experience was enjoyable. HOLY SHIT FIRE! I just happened to pass this place coming home from a doctor's appointment because I was craving something to eat. AND I'M SUPER GLAD I DID! What a gem of a place... The deli is amazing and NOT overpriced... And they didn't look at my sideways when I asked if I could buy just a quarter pound of meat... Some places won't sell less than half a pound. The guy that helped me at the deli was super nice and the checkout girl was very very sweet. Love the customer service here and the prices. Visited while I was in the neighborhood. The parking lot was spacious enough. Gave off a different kind of vibe than larger grocers like Vons or Food4Less. Bougie? There was a gentleman cooking BBQ out front. Smelled wonderful. Small queue. Friendly to more extroverted patrons nearby. The staff inside the store I would say weren't the most welcoming. Felt very out of place. Was not greeted by any of the nearby staff. And it's not like a whole room was between them and the entrance. The tried and true smile and nod did not evoke anything more than a stare and silence. They were also busy stocking their shelves so had to maneuver the cart up and down the same couple of aisles. When I checked out...if the young woman at the counter could call you stupid without reprimand she probably would. That's ok the Asian markets aren't that much better. Now on to the good! The selection choices! The jams, the pastas, the meat counter, the drinks, the cheese! For the love of all that is cheese. Each purchase was a huge hit. Midnight Moon Cheese? Wonderfully hearty with an aftertaste of caramel. The Delice was soft, muted, and 100% a butter substitute. Please come try their cheese offerings if nothing else. The only thing I wouldn't buy again would be the Saint Andre Mini. It was a whole month out from expiry but ammoniated. But that's more a manufacture vs grocer. I've been a regular customer at Howies and usually have great experiences, as most staff are friendly and helpful. However, yesterday around 2:30pm, the cashier (a man in his 30s-40s) was extremely rude. He didn't speak at all during checkout, and when I declined the receipt, he just stared at me without saying a word. It made the interaction very uncomfortable and disappointing. Great selection of quality meats and produce! We kept seeing signs for "Alexanders Prime Meats" when we drive by on San Gabriel. It's not a restaurant but a local store and butcher shop. Parking is available in their ample lot. Weekends they grill meats outside. Inside there is a liquor section and produce area as well as frozen and packaged staples. The bakery section has cakes, cookies, as well as bread from Green St Restaurant. Where they shine is their broad selection of quality meats (prime and A5 Wagyu too) as well as pre marinated meats. The hot deli and meats section has already roasted/bbq/grilled foods like tritip, sausages, chops and steak. We got a juicy hot dog with all the fixins ($3.99) and a tri tip sandwich ($10.99) plus picana and potato egg salad by the lbs. Very delicious! read more

Small markets that shine in all categories are becoming a rare breed at present, often family affairs, many fade as subsequent generations either stop carrying the flame or else dies out. Fortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case here, and now, in at least the second location since opening, this fine market fills a niche, comfortably close to San Marino. We were cutting across town when we saw the sign, and my gf was excited. Apparently, this was a favorite place of hers in the old location. Interestingly, I had bookmarked the establishment in Yelp, so that was all I needed to stop for a while. After dim sum at Bistro 1968, that is, but in the future, this will be a destination place to shop, especially because their meat selection is a cut above and then some. On weekends they have activities in the parking lot. For example, every Saturday, they BBQ meats and sausages fresh for sale. On Sundays, they have a vendor who performs knife sharpening until about 1pm, so that's worth exploring. And, periodically, they have wine tasting. I regret not going back that day for the 3pm Bordeaux selection. Get on their mailing list or social media page for the schedule of events. Quality: Yes, there is a small price to pay for gourmet goods, but I was especially impressed wandering around at the attention to detail the employees exhibit at various tasks. In produce, the clerk carefully selected, trimmed, and sorted green beans before arranging them in the display. Where else do you see that happen? Almost nowhere, right? The meat and seafood selection was equally impressive, the carefully selected beef by grade, pork, sausages, lamb, and everything was appealing (ok, I'm not writing for vegans or vegetarians here but they would find plenty to appeal elsewhere in the store). One thing that really got me excited for grilling season was the 3.5 to 4" thick Florentine steaks (essentially massive porterhouse cuts). The general stock is well considered, too. we picked up two types of French butter: Saltless, the kind most used for cooking, and one combined with fleur de sel, the flaky, coarse sea salt. We found this especially good with pancakes and toast. The wine selection is also excellent. While I didn't get to browse long, I learned they have periodic tastings and seem to be very adept at selecting Old World varieties. I have always loved these rare types of stores and markets that cater to discriminating tastes. I wish I lived closer, but that's a good reason to pack an ice chest when I do go out to shop. read more

Well, this review is about the same as Chloe C's who was there the day before me. I just went here to buy some steaks. Got a few that were handed to me in three wraps. Carried them to the checkout and set in front of the cashier who was talking to another individual. He rang it up asked me if wanted a bag. I said yes so he put the 3 wrapped packages in the bag then just went on talking to the other employee totally ignoring me. Since he never made an attempt to hand me my bag I had to reach over the counter to grab it myself. I'm 84 with a bad shoulder and didn't appreciate the rudeness. You need to come here and buy their good food! The produce was fresh, beautiful and unblemished. The meats were various and of TOP QUALITY! The marbling of some if their meats were a thing of beauty. You won't be bored of their selection of food and drink, take your time! The husband and son went yesterday and bought beef short ribs that were divine. Fatty, tender, flavorful. The protein was so good we all came to visit the next day. This time we had sashimi on the menu- the seafood counter man (didn't catch his name, sorry!) was generous enough to give some of their sashimi sauce! That sauce with their fish topped with a bit of slivered green onion is as good as it gets! Forget the sushi restaurants and come here to make your own sushi and sashimi. There were a variety of sodas I was intrigued to buy and cheeses too. I even bought a Dr. Squatch bar of soap (Slytherin scented)! Called ahead to see if they had a specialty item. Upon entering the store it was very clean (as was the parking lot) and the workers looked happy to be there. When ready to checkout the cashier was waiting in front of his lane to help the next customer. Him and the courtesy clerk looked like they were maybe in high school or college and were very nice and professional. Besides Trader Joe's you can't really find good customer service like this. What a find!! A true local gem of a market! Howie's is packed full of fresh and unique brands and offerings - they even sell cheese from Marin French Cheese Co up near Petaluma California - the oldest cheese shop in the country!! And it's incredible cheese!! So excited I can get it nearby! Howie's has all sorts of good stuff - from a large selection of local craft brews in their huge alcohol room, to Fosselman's ice cream and homemade stocks and sauces in the freezer! And their produce section was a rainbow of fresh choices!! And what I absolutely love is that so much of it is LOCAL!! Alexander's Prime Meats is also located in Howie's which has become my go-to for any fresh meat or seafood - the quality is amazing and totally justifies the price (but prices are decent anyways). The bakery section has a large selection of decadent- looking treats - very hard to resist! And their fresh in-house sourdough bread is delicious! You'd think a local store like this would be expensive but it's not! Prices were competitive for most items - especially the produce - but the quality is definitely superior! The store is the cleanest I've ever been in - and the staff are all friendly, welcoming, and eager to help. Was looking for Green Street salad dressing and cheese infused with balsamic vinegar. Found them here. I know this place is popular with locals. I found this just ok in terms of service. Was looking for seltzer water. Asked 1st clerk who was refilling shelves and she gestured "Over those isles". Ok. I walked over and couldn't find them. Stopped to ask another clerk and she said.."over in that aisle". I eventually found sparking flavored water on the end cap. I went back to Clerk 2 and told her it was sparkling flavored water and I needed plain seltzer water. She seemed annoyed and said "If it's not on the shelf then we don't have any." Sadly this interaction made me feel like unless you are a regular customer, they don't value your business. Will only be returning to purchase my 2 items that local stores don't carry. read more

Every weekend at Howie's there is fresh tri tip being made on the grill rain or shine! You can get a tri tip sandwich made for you inside by the hot case area. They have a variety of things you can get from chicken kabobs to hot dogs not to mention a lot of salads. I enjoyed the pasta salad too. The gentleman who is always outside grilling is very kind and always gives wonderful service. They often have a bubble machine going out there and he refilled it when it was getting low because my daughter was enjoying the bubbles! Came on a Sunday for the knife sharping and stop inside to check out the assortments and BBQ. Saw some very unique items which I love, the produce is super fresh, high end meat case. The grocery store is quite small. Some of the associates are super friendly and some were not, mix bag. The customers that shopped there from parking lot and navigating through the market were a bit self absorbed and had no kindness to others around them. Maybe it's the weekend crowd? I will come back for the hard to find items but I think I'm going to avoid the weekends.. weekends apparently being out the beasts of humanity. Oh and can you try to get vanilla paste? I love shopping at Howie's. It is clean and well stocked with a variety of items. Their staff are very friendly and helpful. Oh and their meat department - hands down- they offer the best meat in LA. They have Wagyu beef, prime grade steaks, and kurobuta pork! I bought some rib eye steaks and asked the butcher to slice it in half since we prefer a thinner cut. The service was superb. They also have a small bakery located at the front - towards the right side of the store when you enter. My favorites are their pies and muffins. I called in a few days before Christmas to check if they still had prime rib and if they happened to sell lobster tails. The guy on the phone was extremely helpful and attentive, confirming they had everything we wanted. My dad went in on the 23rd to pick up the rib roast, some tails, and horseradish. It's my first time ordering from this market, and I gotta say that the prime rib was absolutely divine. They even removed the ribs and tied them back on to the roast, which I was already planning to do myself. Extra time saved. The horseradish was also superb. The reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because of the lobster. It did smell a little fishy right after we thawed them, but nothing too off-putting so I went ahead and butter poached them. The first bite hit me in the face, it was an extremely strong taste/smell of ammonia, and I felt my nose burning a bit. It's a real shame because we spent about $180 bucks on the tails alone. Maybe stick to getting meat and not seafood from this place. read more
