HONORING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH I have been intending to try this place since forever. Since it's Women's History Month, this visit came at the right time! Howzatt is a family owned Indo/Pak restaurant and it's operated by the very beautiful and lovely Noshaba Shahid! Upon entering the restaurant, Noshaba greeted me with the friendliest and warmest greeting. She welcomed me in and asked me if I was dining in or placing a to-go order. I told her that I wanted to place a to-go order. As a result,she handed me a menu, graciously lead me to the waiting area, told me to have a seat, and make myself comfortable while I browse the menu. I could feel the genuine warmth in her smile and the welcome that she gave me. This made me comfortable and ready to spend my money, lol. I highly appreciated the great customer hospitality! Furthermore, as I browsed through the menu, I noticed that they have an extensive selection of vegan and vegetarian options. They also have a variety of rice options which made it difficult for me to choose because I'm a rice lover! Although I didn't try their fried rice this go round, I will definitely put that on my list for the next visit. Moreover, I ended up ordering the chicken biryani, chicken malai kebab, garlic naan, and butter naan. I spent about $35 in total and it was well worth it! It was enough food to feed three people. The chicken biryani was full of delicious and robust Indian/Pakistaní spices and seasonings. However, it's brutally spicy in my opinion, so if you don't do spicy, then do not order this dish. The chicken was tender and lacking greasiness which is an A+ in my opinion. The chicken malai kebab consisted of white meat and it was tender and full of flavor. I appreciate the fact that the food was not salty but was perfectly seasoned making the meal enjoyable. I highly enjoyed the authenticity of the flavors in each and every glorious delectable bite that I took. As for the naan, it was delicious as well but the only complaint I have is that it was burned on the bottom of some of the pieces. Other than that, it was delicious! Overall, I highly recommend this establishment to anyone who enjoys delicious authentic Indo/Pak Cuisine! The ambience is nice and quiet; very relaxing. The customer hospitality is impeccable. I noticed that Noshaba was extremely attentive to the guests who were dining in as I was waiting for my order. She even informed me that it would be about a 20-25 minutes wait for my food due to the fact that they prepare each order fresh, apologizing for the wait time. I was totally fine with that, especially since she informed me and brought me up to speed instead of letting me wait around wandering what is taking so long. If you're looking for genuine authentic Indian food, this is the spot! The spices are amazing and the chai tea is delicious. Only reason why I gave it four stars is because the restaurant was very hot inside, our server was very sweet and food was served very quickly. The food here was a lovely surprise. Next time I might ratchet down the spice level a tiny bit, but some great flavors were coming out of the kitchen and we each ordered a mango lassi to drink which always cools heat. Our favorite was the Lamb Pasanda which had a beautifully flavored sauce, and the Kadai Lamb Curry was also great. I do think that their Kulchas are some of the best I've had in a long while and I can't say whether we preferred the onion or paneer cheese version better. When it came to dessert they were out of the Rasamalai and so we tried the Gulab Jamun. Bumped up the rating because waiter Dave was very patient answering all of our questions and he talked us into the Gulab Jamun and I'm glad he did because it was the best version I've ever had. Overall, this place more than met our expectations and I'm glad to have found another Halal place because the meats are so much better! Medium sized restaurant but very dead. Didn't seem like they get a lot of foot traffic. Service was good. He checked on us often but I didn't like the fact that as soon as we sat down, he placed water bottles down for everyone and so we thought that maybe their tap water machine was broken. Come to find out at the end, they charged us $6.45 for 5 bottles of water when we didn't even ask for water yet. It took awhile for the food to come out which I didn't understand because we were the only guest there. We ordered: Chicken vindaloo - lots of gravy and not much chicken. Spicy gravy and flavorful. Butter chicken - not the best butter chicken I've had but it is a bit spicy so don't give it to your kids unless they can handle spice. Chicken biryani - had 2 chicken drums at the bottom but served in a very inefficient bowl that spills rice everywhere when you're just trying to scoop some rice. It was a bit bland. Gobi Manchurian - fried cauliflower covered in like a slightly sweet and spicy sauce. I didn't like that the cauliflower wasn't crispy at all. Very soggy. Sauce is overwhelming. read more

I did not like this food & I LOVE Indian food. The saag paneer tasted like it was missing spices. Perhaps it is more of a home style version but it was very bland. I can't tell if it just hadn't simmered long enough to meld the flavors, lacked salt or was just under seasoned all together. There was a little heat at the end but weak flavor up front. The naan was also bland. It tasted like they forgot the salt while preparing the dough so sprinkled salt on top. So there was a blast of salt then, bland, bland after taste. My son stuck his tongue out and said, ew WAY too salty. No rice was included at all which was a surprise given the price of the meal and sucked given the fact that the naan was horrible. (Let that sink in, horrible naan - that's pretty hard to mess up). Bones, mostly bones in the korma. This may be traditional to pull out the flavor but, a smidge of meat would have been nice too. The buttered chicken was runny with rubbery meat. I am sorry but, unless it was a wildly off night for the restaurant, I do not plan on trying it again. Expensive & not good. read more

The restaurant is based on the theme of cricket (India's most popular sport). The reviews were rather good and so I tried it out. The service was good and it felt rather nice to order in Hindi. I got the chilli chicken, the badami chicken korma, and the goat biryani. The chilli chicken was fantastic, although it wasn't strictly chilli chicken. It tasted like a cross between a chicken manchurian and chilli chicken. However, it was really really good. In fact, the best I have had in Houston (and I have tried a LOT of Indian restaurants). I would like to warn you that if you cannot tolerate heat, then don't get this. I am all for heat, so this was amazing for me. The badami chicken korma was also really good. It tasted like something that I would get in India. The gravy was rich and creamy, with an underlying nutty flavor. The chicken was a little chewy, but other than that, it was great. Now, let me give you some preface on biryani. Being an avid biryani fanboy, I have tried and tasted biryani in over 20-30 restaurants in various cities of the US. There are 2 places that have nailed it so far (Himalaya in Houston (Pakistani style biryani) and Aladin Sweets & Market in Los Angeles (Bangladeshi style kachhi biryani that tastes similar to Kolkata style biryani)). When I got the biryani here, I was hoping that it would blow my socks off (because no other restaurant in Houston has, other than Himalaya). However, I was disappointed, as usual. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. The meat tasted average, and the rice wasn't fragrant or aromatic or flavorful as a biryani should be. However, it was rather hot. So, I would conclude this review by saying that if you're in Houston and want to have a great chilli chicken or a great chicken korma, definitely give this place a try. I won't recommend the biryani. We had : goat korma Chicken butter masala Vegetable biryani Vegetable samosa (not the best- a bit too dry) Carrot halwa Butter naan The food was very delicious and well seasoned, however the goat was mostly bones and the butter chicken only had a few pieces of actual chicken. The only reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the bones and lack of chicken given. We finished off with saffron kheer that was very tasty. This locally-owned restaurant is now one of my favorites on the Northside of Houston. As others have said, Howzatt is a hidden gem! The staff is kind, the atmosphere is cozy, the food is exquisite, and the prices are super fair. For under $8, you can eat a hearty lunch. Their "Vegetarian Lunch Combo" is only $6.99 and it comes with two fragrant curries, naan, vegetable biryani, and yogurt. The non-vegetarian combo is only $1 more. For dinner, my husband enjoys the goat korma. He says the meat is incredibly tender and his favorite part is sopping up the delicious sauce with a piece of warm, soft naan. However, he feels that there is not enough goat meat in this dish -- the goat chunks are mostly bones. I like to order the chana masala with rice and a side of naan. This dish features comforting, creamy chickpeas bathed in a thick, tangy, aromatic gravy. I could eat this dish every day... and it is very filling! Howzatt has been my go-to for 5+ years. Even through the owner change last year, I still continued to frequent because it was the best Indian/Bangladeshi food I've found in the greater Houston area. Until tonight. I can only assume they have switched owners again or switched cooks because the quality was so drastically below their standard. The butter paneer wasn't it's usual creamy texture and I kept getting multiple woody bits of ginger in every bite and even slight choked on one, there's no way it was blended and strained like they normally do. The paneer tasted chemically and rubbery. The samosas were overcooked and hard. The green chutney that comes with the samosas was practically tasteless and watery. I came by this restaurant with the weird name one night to try their food. It's located near Soto's, and if you live in the area and eat out a lot, you know that name. The atmosphere inside Howzatt is sorta nice, but quiet. They have a lot cricket photos and decor on the wall. They were a little slow on my visit, and it appeared there were only 2 employees, maybe the husband and the wife. The water thats served in a pitcher to each table tasted like tap water....not sure they even filter it. They don't give you ice either, so you have to ask for it. I'd recommend ordering a beverage instead. My order consisted of the garlic naan, chicken samosa, one other appetizer, goat curry and butter chicken. All of the food was delicious. Can't complain about the taste. The goat was mostly bone though, so it was disappointing I hardly received any meat for $13.99. Butter chicken was delicious and full of juicy breast pieces. Although some of the reviews indicate their food is on the spicier side for Indian cuisine, I didn't really see that even though I asked for "spicy". Under new management since October! The paneer pakora was insane, so so good and flavorful. There was a creamy mint sauce instead of the more typical chutney which I was skeptical about at first, but by the time I ate it I wanted an entire bottle. My partner got korma and I got vindaloo, the vindaloo wasn't the spiciest I've had but it was incredibly flavorful -- great combo of tangy, spicy, and a little sweet from tomato and I think tamarind. And so many places' korma is far too sweet and creamy while lacking in flavor, but that wasn't the case here at all. I've tried a few other korma since moving to Houston last year, and this was by far both of our favorites. If you tried this place previously, please come check it out again with the new owners! The service was fantastic, we came quite late (about an hour before close) which I typically try to avoid doing, but the food was fast and the owners and their family were incredibly kind and attentive. Will definitely be back! Editing to add, we also had Keshmiri naan and honestly, my partner and I get it any time we see it on a menu, and this was probably the best I've had. There were bits of sugar crystallized on the outside and the naan itself was stuffed to the brim!
