I got the chicken tikki masala, garlic Naan, and veggie samosas. The tikki masala sauce was so good I wish they would sell it in jars. The Naan was delicious and had those black burnt parts around the fringes which I loved. I had to wait a bit to get the food but didn't mind at all because it was worth it. Only complaint is chicken felt a little overcooked? Not too bad. Enough sauce left over to maybe simmer more chicken in at home! read more

Update- I have recently returned, and I upgrade my rating to 5 stars. I had not been coming so often because I found the food to be on the spicier side for me. However, the owner, Raj indicated and did prepare my meal mild. The palak paneer was awesome. Still quite tasty, just easier in my stomach. Still a gem of a restaurant. I was on a search for a new restaurant in my area of town, and I discovered this hidden gem. Don't let the name of this restaurant deter you from trying this restaurant because you will be missing out! The menu indicated that "howzatt" is a cricket term that is derived from "how is that" which is said when protesting a referee's call on the field. They also refer to their food as "South Asian cuisine, but I would call it Indian-Pakistani food in general with Halal meat and recognizable dishes in that cuisine. I am glad to have this authentic restaurant in my neighborhood as it is comparable or better than the offerings in the Hillcroft, Southwest Houston area. We started off sampling several appetizers. The following items were $.99 each: vegetable samosa (standard potato pea mixture) 4 stars, chicken samosa (a little different as it appeared the have more of a wonton-spring roll crust instead of the traditional samosa flour crust) 3 stars; Dal puri (crispy but could have had more filling as my half had none) 3 stars; fish chop ($1.25 never had one, but it had minced fish mixture with perhaps potato or flour and spices and deep fried "croquet" perhaps) 3 stars; and vegetable spring roll. I would say that I thought there generally was a bit of spiciness in the food, but having a spoon of raita (yogurt dish) periodically kept everything in check. I ordered the palak paneer ($7.99), and it was nicely spiced with a good portion of the cheese. Very comparable to others in Southwest and delicious 4.5 stars. My wife ordered the goat biryani ($13.99) which had well prepared rice and a good portion of meat with the standard fare of bone. The meat was tender and a bit spicy for me but my wife thought it was mild to her taste. This was a large portion and we had a lot to take home. The chicken biryani is $8.99 just as a comparison. Biryani is all about the rice and it was evenly spiced with the wonderful aromatic rice that was a bit milder than the meat but overall was very enjoyable 4.5 stars. Service on this occasion was a bit slow but acceptable since it appeared our food wss prepared fresh. The owner, Raj was very friendly and accommodating. His young son was our original "server" which was cute. Raj also said that his wife cooked our dinner, which explains the authentic taste. This is a small family run restaurant, and I encourage the neighborhood to support it. I will definately be back. They are also considering limited delivery so you may want to encourage them to try. It would be great to have Indian food as an option for delivery in our neighborhood. read more

This just may be my new home away from home. The goat biryani ($13.99), saffron kheer ($2.49) and masala chai ($1.49) are authentic and delicious. If you can't handle the heat, request raita. I'm so sad that I found my favorite Indian restaurant in Northwest Houston the week before I moved out of the area. I've been here twice in that one week before moving. The first time, I tried the chicken and vegetable samosas, plain naan, chicken korma, and chicken boti kebab. The second time I had the chicken biryani and garlic naan. My favorite items were the veggie samosas, chicken korma, chicken biryani, and garlic naan. They have perfected the art of making naan! You know how sometimes you get naan with blah thin and crunchy parts? Not here. Theirs is pillowy soft and buttery. The chicken biryani was flavorful and spiced well, without being overpowering. The chicken korma had a chunky sauce that was so tasty, I kept eating it even after I was full. The only disappointments here were the chicken boti kebab, which was a tad dried out, and that the amount of chicken with the other dishes was on the smaller side. But otherwise...man, this is awesome Indian food. And their prices are the best I've ever seen. Their lunch combos are priced so well and their samosas are only 99 cents, and taste like they're homemade! If you're in the area, you're in for a treat! Best in the area. The quality of the chicken they use is what you'd want - solid white chunks in the tikka masala/butter chicken. The portions are great, and I love that each entree comes with naan or rice, no need to order separately. Having said that, though, we order our mains with rice and then get an order of butter naan and one of paratha because they're both that good. This place is a hidden gem on the North side of town. It's a local business- I don't ever expect Asian/Indian restaurants to look super nice and upscale and for there to be a a vast, whole equipped staff. When I came, the owner was our chef as well as our server. He was very kind and attentive. The dishes I have tried are very tasty and I will continue to go back if I'm in the area. 1. Naan- One of the best naans I've had. It came out sooo warm, fresh, soft, and smelled so heavenly. I finished a whole order by myself. 2. Butter chicken- This dish is delicious. The sauce is so rich, creamy, and flavorful and the chicken breast pieces were juicy. It tasted so good with the naan. 3. Goat Kodai- I was pleasantly surprised at how much I like this dish. This was the first time I have ever tried a Kodai dish at any Indian restaurant and now I'm hooked. This dish is on the spicier side, but I love it for this. I never thought I would like goat, but they cooked it so well. The meat tasted fresh and very tender. After discovering this dish, I went to other Indian restaurants to try Goat Kodai at other places and it was no where near as good as the one they make at Howzatt. Food was really good! Just weird customer service. My husband went to the counter to put our order in and the lady just started yelling at him. I thought we were going to get kicked out or something. When he came back to the table, I asked him what was going on and he said she was just trying to correct his order..but it legit sounded like she wanted to kick him out by the anger in her voice. My husband wasn't mad or anything, he was just kinda in shock bc her tone with him. While we were eating we heard the man and woman arguing in the kitchen. We were sitting in the very back booth and you can still hear them. The water taste like unfiltered faucet water. And the cups had the calcium deposit around it. Other than that, food was great! My favorite new Indian restaurant (although it should be noted that they also serve Bangladeshi and Pakistani food, too)! Since we flooded from Hurricane Harvey, we've been eating at a lot more restaurants than normal these past few weeks. And my mom and I both have a love for Indian food, so we gave Howzatt a try, and we were not disappointed! First of all, the atmosphere is lovely. The yellow walls are cheerful, and it's casual enough to go in plainclothes but nice enough to dress up for an evening out. The menu is extensive and intriguing and I can't wait to come back and try something new! Tonight I had chicken korma, and it was delicious, but, unfortunately too spicy for me. Don't get me wrong, I ordered mild, but you can't underestimate the power of my whiteness. A LOT of things are too spicy for me. But when Raj, one of the owners, came and asked us how we liked it, he noticed me stuffing my face with na'an and chugging water, and asked if I didn't like it. I told him, of course not! It was delicious! But a little spicy for me. He immediately took my dish back to the kitchen and cooled it off a bit for me. Not only is that a mark of a fantastic chef--it's incredibly hard to change flavors like that without watering down or diluting the recipe--but it's the mark of a person who is completely passionate about his food and restaurant. I was blown away by the service. (And most importantly, when I got it back my white tastebuds were able to handle the spice). This is a family-owned restaurant, and it is clear that the both Surya Saladi and Raj care deeply about their food and business. Whether you're a native Indian (or Bangladeshi or Pakistani) looking for a taste of home, or you're completely new to South Asian cuisine and want to give it a try, this place is definitely for you. The food was quite good with the exception of the vegetable curry which had a little too kuch turmeric for my taste. The mango lassi, however, was awful. The yogurt had gone off and it was curdling. There are no words to describe this restaurant. The food is stale, cold, inedible and could make you sick . The waiter was looking like a thug, wearing cut off jeans and with no sense of service. I ordered one Mango lassy it came warm. The chicken chili made me puke and the rice with chicken was from the freezer and pieces were cold as ice , even the rice was very cold.
