Been coming here for years ever since I was first introduced by Yelper Frank B. What a great road trip stop! I can't believe I haven't been here before, but now I won't be able to pass it up. This place has Bucee's beat in the kolache/food department. It's much smaller and parking can be a pain, but once you get inside, the kolaches are worth it! As a new customer, I knew I had to try a variety of things. I always thought I had posted a review of this place but it seems like my review was left in yelpurgatory. Anyways this is a great stopping point on the drive from Houston. It's about half way and it's a speed trap anyways. As you're slowing down might as well stop in for breakfast and a bathroom break. The kolaches are the way to go. I usually get 3. A ham, jalapeño, and cheese, a sausage jalapeño and cheese and a pan sausage jalapeño and cheese. The bread is what makes these kolaches so damn good. They are very affordable at about 2 bucks a pop. read more

This place is a gem! Perfectly situated in between Houston and Austin, this place is a place to use the restroom + a convenience store + an amazing place to get kolaches. They have food made to order, but I've never ordered it. I've also never purchased any clothing or household items, so can't speak much to the quality. My personal absolute favorite thing to do here is grab some sweet kolaches and a drink (Honest Tea anyone?) and nom on the road. My favorite kolache is the chocolate and cream cheese one, as well as the regular cream cheese one. The breading is fluffy, sweet, and so delicious that even for someone like me, who usually peels breading away from food, I finish every bite. Perfect ratio of filling to breading. Their salty kolaches are good too - I've probably tried all of them, and among my friends, the sausage jalapeño and cheese is our favorite. They have two types of sausage - I recommend the pan sausage because it's already cut up. My friend prefers the whole sausage, so it's up to you. You'd be a fool to not stop here! Even if all you want is some sweet tea or a soda, this is a great place to get it. Plus, gas station is next door, and the speed limit slows down anyway, so it's very convenient. Great service! The guy in the bakery walked around just to show me exactly what was offered in detail. That was just sweet. I wish I would've gotten his name, but I'm sure we'll be back. Bathrooms are clean!! And the gift shop area had a lot of cute things for kids, I noticed. Y'all definitely need a dairy free milk option for coffee though. I was upset that I couldn't get my coffee! Ok, so I've always loved Hruska's... I tell everyone it's the best bakery in Texas... and I mean that! I love their gluten free snacks and they carry my favorite cola. Seriously, the assortment of snacks and drinks rival Wholefoods.. Now with Covid-19 going on... (I haven't been anywhere since early March) I decided to stop in... I was so happy to see how much caution Hruska's was taking... everyone working had on gloves and masks.. plus they had dividers between the cashier and yourself. Right now that's a deal breaker for me. You have to be covered up to get my business. Today Hruska's earned even more of my respect! All the employees were kind and seemed happy to be there. We found this place on our way to COTA. The Taste of Texas coffee is my favorite along with delicious kolaches. It's clean and the staff are very polite. We stop to buy their hot pepper jelly too. There's no speaking ill of this wonderful facility. Chicken salad is on point as well as their made from scratch bacon cheeseburger. Make sure to grab an on the go snack of cheese curds. This place is in the friggin' middle of nowhere. If bf hadn't already known about it, I'm pretty sure I would have never been able to find this place. What with no cell phone service and all. Still, when we pulled up to this convenience store, I was surprised by how many people here and by the fact the restrooms were as clean as they were. My boyfriend said that the "MUST GETS" from this place are the Kolaches and the Danishes. Sounded good to ME! The first time I heard about Kolaches were from going to Shipley's and they were pretty good, so I was excited to get it from somewhere else. Mine was a bit of a disappointment though. Overall, I think the kolaches were ok..mine was a bit burnt and on the non-cheesy side. Which was unfortunate.. HOWEVER, the cheese danish that I got was amaaazzinnnggg. I've never had one so cheesy with the perfect amount of cream cheese to bread ratio. The bread was soft and fluffy...like like Hawaiian Kings Bread with the cheesy ooey center. Omg. So friggin good. 5 stars for the Danish, 3 stars for the Kolaches!! 4 average, hurray! read more

Kept reading about the Kolaches. No idea what they were so on our way to La Grange to sightsee, we stopped in. So glad we did. A general store with a bakery and a small grill. You can get burgers and stuff. They have a small seating area inside. But we came for the Kolaches. First, what a huge selection of flavors to choose from. They looked like fallen hot cross buns, with filling dolloped on them. We ordered a cherry, cream cheese cherry, poppy seed, blueberry cream cheese, apricot and a cottage cheese with cinnamon. Didn't actually try them until later and they were amazing. Light fluffy sweet bread with nice amount of filling. I can imagine how great they must be right then and there. They also had a variety of "pigs in blankets", similar to calzones with a vast variety here too of savory fillings. I had to try the ham, cheese and jalapeno. I ate that one right away. They heated it up for me. Very affordable. The Kolaches make a great breakfast and reheat well. There store portion had a unique variety of items. Toys, knick knacks, as well as what you would find at a convenience store. The only negative was that after our purchase we went to get gas, everyone had abanded their cars and were inside getting goodies. We waited around for about 10 minutes with no one moving. Nice place to stop. Always busy. You can get the usual variety of convenience store nonsense here, or you can get the not typical Bohemian stuff, which is what appeals to me. They sell Kolaches, various home made sandwiches, and other basic but good delectables. They also sell various jars of pickled everything. There is a nice sit down area to eat the burger or sandwich you ordered. The bathrooms are clean, but always busy. The parking lot can be tricky if you pull up front, not a lot of room. Man, Hruska's really grew up, didn't they?!? I remember coming here as a kid when my grandparents would come out to Fayetteville & Ellinger to visit the churches & cemeteries and this place always had the best kolaches & klobasniky around, but it was more or less an old convenience store that had a small bakery. A few years back they expanded and turned it into what you see today, and it still kinda blows me away. My wife and I like to stop here whenever we are visiting the area, and we have firm favorites - cream cheese, apricot & poppy seed for me. Cherry and chocolate/cream cheese for her. They're not covered in sugar like some places (though that's not all bad), but the dough always is my weakness. OMNOMNOMNOMNOSTALGIA. Anyway, it's a foregone conclusion we shall return. I use to be so in love with this place for their Kolahces. I would HAVE to stop here on the way to and from Houston, but now it doesn't really do it for me. The dough use to be really soft and fluffy, now it's pretty dense. There is a good variety of items to choose from. I miss the old baking styles. It's no Buc-ee's in the bathroom standards, it always has a weird smell in the Ladies restroom, like bad plumbing or the toilets don't drain well. Kills the wanting to eat mood. read more

This is the only non fast food stop around and don't they know it. The place has a gas station and burger grill / to go sandwich counter inside. Food is ok--we had burgers and sandwiches. Nothing special at all (think cafeteria food). We didn't eat any of the bread products so I can't say if they were life changing. They smelled good. Bathrooms are clean but lines are long (4-5 stalls in women's). Packaged goods are WAY overpriced. We paid $3.50 for a basic $1 Lunchable because one of our kids wouldn't eat a sandwich. Staff at both food counter and check outs were apathetic and not particularly helpful. For example, one of our sandwiches was made incorrectly. Our son ordered a ham and cheese sandwich PLAIN (no spread, tomato etc). When I pointed out that it hand mustard, mayo, onions, tomato, lettuce and pickles on it and was told I should have ordered differently and marked it so on the order (customers don't write on the order pads--staff does). They fixed the sandwich and made it right but they let me know I was a giant pain. read more

The best pit stop on your journey between Houston and Austin! I always stop in to grab a few kolaches and a drink or two. They have a very nice gift section too, and plenty of cool stuff to shop for. I highly recommend their sausage kolaches and their Spinach-Feta kolaches! I just wish they would brush some garlic butter on them. OMG that would set them off! The best time to go is in the morning because that's when everything is made super fresh! This is a nice little pit stop between Houston and Austin. We stopped in after a relative recommended that we make the stop, seeing as we have never tried a Kolache before and Hruskas are the best. We ordered a variety so we can get it all in at once starting with the sweet chocolate and cream cheese, blueberry and cream cheese and a cinnamon roll. They were pretty fabulous. Nice an pillowy and great sweetness from the fillings. Then we moved on to the savory with a pan sausage w/cheese, pan sausage w/kraut and mushroom, spinach and feta. These were very flavorful as well, you can tell the sausage was made fresh in house. I think they would have been much tastier if they were warm. I can't tell you how many times I have passed this place and wanted to stop but, this trip to Galveston I finally had time to do so. There was plenty of parking and I appreciated the ease of that aspect. The store itself has a lot of great items to look through from clothes, blankets, home decor, dish sets, etc. The shelves are close together and it was busy so it was hard to maneuver but, worth it. The bathrooms were clean and there were some tables up front to eat at if you prefer not to drive and eat at the same time. I stood in line and ordered two kolaches, spinach and mushroom and a sausage and cheese. I had them warmed up and then went to the register where they were having problems processing my card as a debit but, in the end I just ended up hitting credit and went to my car. The sausage was dry and the cheese on the inside was bit skimpy so I wouldn't recommend that one. The spinach and mushroom one was 4 star and I would order that again but, the first bite was the best bite because towards the end there was just too much breading and not enough filling. I personally have had better kolaches at other places so, for me I may stop again if I am hungry but, I wouldn't go out of my way to drive here. read more

About halfway between Houston and Austin lies Hruska's in the Texas Hill Country. We usually stop here when we head to Austin. We got burgers here and some healthy snacks like pop chips and protein bars. The only thing I wish is that their wheat bread was whole wheat. The ingredients for the wheat bread are the exact same for the white bread and has HFCS. Anyhow this place is crazy popular for their kolaches and burgers. They also have a good bit of Texas inspired novelties and other specialty items such as pickled veggies, jams and jellies, assorted nuts etc. They have some house decorations and knick knacks, some clothing and flip flops, car items and so on. Anyplace full of organics has 5 stars in my book! I never stopped here because I thought it was a regular pit stop but I was actually really really impressed! There are so many options and variety- although the location makes it a bit more expensive, there are tons of options for road trip snacks! There was like a whole aisle of healthy chips, I wasn't even aware of some of the flavors like garden of eatin's chili lime and pico de gallo. There was an entire fridge full of natural and organic teas from top to bottom omg. Of course there are plenty of the regular stuff like the pies and kolaches and aausage, but I am more than happy to have a great place to get healthy snacks from Houston to Austin.
