Really wanted to like this place but it was a flop. As someone born and raised here I can name over 30 other places that taste better and no where near as high. Crab Rangoons tasted old and like they had freezer burn, didn't taste fresh at all. Almost $7 mind you for the worst crab Rangoon I've ever tasted. Sam's club boxed crab rangoon taste better and that sadden me. Not STL style rice at all. If you know you know. The general tso chicken was the only thing that tasted decent. The fried rice tasted like it was 10 days old, the meat had no flavor and was mushy, and the crab Rangoons had no flavor and hardly any filling, but that wouldn't matter anyway since it tasted like nothing and was mostly fried wonton. Tonight was my first time trying Hsu's Hunan Yu and it was really tasty! Definitely some of the better sauces, overall the food was light and didn't make me feel exhausted after eating. The sauces were packed with flavor without being overbearing. General Tao Chicken : the sauce wasn't too spicy but had lots of flavor. The peppers were a nice touch. I liked that the broccoli was separate but there was a chunk of ginger I bit into that surprised me. Overall 4/5 for flavors. The chicken was slightly over cooked but it didn't drastically impact the overall dish. Orange chicken : this sauce was great! It was light and not to vinegary or a citrus bomb. The chicken was slightly over cooked but again, not making the dish inedible. 4/5 The plain fried rice was my favorite. Simple yet had lots of flavor and was cooked perfectly. 5/5 Egg rolls : another light item but sooo good. Mine was the perfect amount of crunch and it had an even temperature throughout and overall tasty. 5/5 Egg Drop soup : again, light but lots of flavor. It wasn't as warm as I liked for only an 8 minute drive home but still good. 4/5 Something did spill in the bag on the car ride home but I feel like that's a chance you always take when ordering Chinese take out. We paid cash but online accepts credit cards as well. No dine-in, either delivery or carry out. Customer service was friendly and the establishment was clean. Three stars for the food, one additional star for being open on Monday and until 10pm in a post-Covid world. The good: our takeout order was ready very quickly and was fresh and hot when we arrived. The sesame chicken was very good and the pieces were gigantic, there was enough for two extremely filling meals; I also kind of loved that the broccoli was served on the side and there was so much of it! Usually you'll get maybe two pieces as a garnish at other spots. My husband got a shrimp st. paul and said it was an 8.5/10. It also came on an everything bun which was really interesting and he said it set it off. He also enjoyed his shrimp fried rice. I also subbed my white rice for fried, it was fine. Nothing over the top tasty but I've also had much worse. Affordable for the amount of food we got. Apparently the gentleman at the register was very nice (I waited in the car). The bad: hardly "bad" but the egg roll while crispy, had very little flavor and the crab rangoons didn't have any crab flavor. Just cream cheese - like just cream cheese. This was quite the experience, and to be honest with you based on the food I would have likely gone with a three-star review as it wasn't bad. However, the overall experience made it deserving of a two-star review. Hsu's Hunan Yu is located in a small strip mall, parking itself is limited, and the inside is small however there is enough room for four booths for seating. I would likely encourage another option than dining in because they had a portable space heater that felt like the fire of Hades had expanded into the dining area, making the experience uncomfortable. I feel that carry out and delivery is what keeps this place in business. When we first arrived, we were greeted with a less than enthusiastic how can I help you, which wouldn't have been an issue on its own but it likely signaled the start of a downhill dining experience. After ordering, we grabbed a table and waited, and continued to observe the employee who seemed to become annoyed any time the phone rang. On one occasion we overheard the employee venting and swearing in the back. Apparently, a customer had called in, and they didn't have their order, he repeatedly told the customer that they had to have called the wrong restaurant, only to discover after hanging up that the order was placed online and took time to process. The highlight of my visit had to be when I overheard the employee storm into the back and yell, "Call me when's delivery comes in, I don't want to be here all fucking day". As far as my food goes, the hot braised pork seems to have more breading than actual pork, but the sauce was tasty as was the rice. I've had delivery from here twice because I try to maximize my cleaning time by not leaving the house at all on one of my days off and it's just way too hot to go out for lunch anyway. I ordered a full order of beef fried rice and got an order chicken fried rice. I double checked my order on my screen as I still have it and yes, it is for a full order of beef fried rice. I also ordered a full order of general tso's chicken without the white rice. It came the way I specified and they also added a small container of steamed broccoli on the side which was nice. Delivery takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes from here. I don't remember what I ordered the first time but it was correct and I liked the flavors. It's not the best Chinese food I've had but it's pretty acceptable in a pinch. With that said, my general tso's today was actually pretty good, quite saucy and the chicken pieces were not over-breaded. So that definitely got a thumbs up from me. Our absolute favorite Chinese restaurant, Hunan Royal on Tesson Ferry in Dierbergs plaza, is closed due to coved 19, so we went to Hunan Yu for the first time in over three years. I remembered it being very good, but I must say we were very disappointed this time. We got Kung Pao Shrimp, Chicken Fried Rice and crab Rangoon, our standard order at Hunan Royal. Nothing was anywhere near as good as at Hunan Royal. We have become very spoiled by their consistent high quality. My shrimp were 1/2 the size of those at Hunan Royal and we're overcooked, tough and dry. The fried rice had very little taste and the crab Rangoon were tough and chewy. If I had to rate the meal, I would give it a four or five out of ten....meh! We are anxiously awaiting the reopening of Hunan Royal, the only local Chinese we will go to from now on. read more

As far as cheap Chinese places go, this place is as good as it gets. This is my family's go-to takeout spot for over 20 years now. One of the greatest things you can hope for from a restaurant is consistency, and over the years, the food has always tasted exactly the same -- amazing!
