I had some friends in the Bay View area that hasn't had any Vietnamese food and this location was closest to them in terms of all of the other Vietnamese restaurant so I thought of Hue, can't go wrong. I was probably the only Vietnamese there, but that's okay, it is Bay View. The thing I like most about Hue would be the decor, it is very modern inside. Though I know with modern, it ​does come with a price tag. Well, also being in Bay View, besides​ finding parking, you know its a little more upscale. That was my only hesitation​ in​ bringing people here. My friend and I both had the Pho Bo Tai which is only the rare steak meat. For the price here elsewhere, you would get all types of meat. They had the necessary bean sprouts, basils, etc. so that was good. The broth​ was flavorful, my friend enjoyed it. My other friend had the Veggie Curry, and he said that was good. It was a decent size portion. Though, I wished he had the Chicken curry to know that said but it's​ okay. Towards the end of the menu, I thought to myself, I should have ordered appetizers​ or at least the spring rolls or something so they can have a try at it. But after this experience, my friends are still willing to try Vietnamese food so that's a win I suppose. I would come to Hue again but won't be going out of my way to be here. read more

We stopped in for lunch on a slow Thursday noon hour. We had the bbq ribs appetizer which was huge and very tasty. The spring rolls were very good too. The menu was not at all what I was expecting. I would classify it as a lot of Chinese food too. I had the chicken curry for my main. The yellow curry dish was fantastic with an awesome norm ohs bowl of chicken and veggies in a very spicy curry broth and a huge scoop of fantastic jasmine rice right on top. Be aware that the food was piping hot and remained so throughout the meal. I liked that but it can be a bit of a mouth burner. A couple drawbacks are that they don't appear to have any lunch specials so my bowl of curry was about $17. That being said I got 2 full meals out of it. So I'm torn. The flavors are awesome. The pho broth is delicious. And the interior design is lovely. But the prices? So. Steep. I hate having this affect my review. But having eaten at many, many Vietnamese places (and being Viet), I was shocked at the prices and it made me upset for the customers. These prices are too high! 12 dollars for a bowl of pho?! What? You would be shocked to see it normally higher than 10. Ok, so it was a giant bowl yes. But, I would spring for a smaller bowl for a smaller price, because it was already so big and difficult to finish all of it. Ok, money aside. Because I want to talk about the food!! I loved the flavor. The pho was a clear, flavorful broth. And the bowl was massive. Mi Xao, which is stir-fried noodles with veggies and tofu, was a delicious sauce. It was again super flavorful. There was a bit too much sauce but I was happy with how delicious it was. And then the goi cuon, so fresh and delicious. Always so good. Final thoughts, go for the flavor and the authenticity. The pho here is on point. But for the price, just know it's a bit steeper than one would expect! My husband and I stopped in the Friday before the deep freeze and had a great meal at Hue! We ordered the appetizer sampler which came with fresh and fried spring rolls, spicy crab rangoon, and two marinated beef skewers. Everything was prepared really well and tasted delicious, but the star was definitely the beef. For entrees, I got the "everything but the kitchen sink" fried rice with an egg on top. Pretty tasty, but also huge dish - I only made it to the egg and maybe a quarter of the rice before giving up and packing up the rest as leftovers. My husband got the pork bun and only had positive things to say about his dish! He's very attached to the bun at Pho Viet but said the Hue version - complete with vermicelli noodles, pork sausage, egg roll, nuac cham and vegetables - was comparable. I hate to admit it but I've lived in Bayview for years and have only stopped in at Hue once or twice! I don't know what's kept me away all these years but I know I'll be a regular now. read more

I really liked this place. The wait staff was very friendly, the restaurant was clean and attractive, and the food was really good. Milwaukee has definitely been lacking in Vietnamese options so I'm so glad to have this place. That said, I live in New York, where vegan Vietnamese is plentiful so I may also be a little snobby with my evaluation. I had the vegan pho soup (with a mushroom broth) with fried tofu. The soup itself was good but it was much better with a generous helping of Siracha and hoison sauce. :) I also think the dish would have been better with veggie meat, which would have held up its consistency better in the liquid. I also sampled my mom's grilled veggies and fried tofu in tomato sauce. This was the daily special so I'm not sure how often they serve it. This dish also had a good flavor but I tend to prefer dishes with stronger flavor (more garlic, spice, and heat). My favorite dish was the rice noodle salad with fried veggie meat and peanut sauce. Delicious! We also had the spring rolls, which had a good flavor but I feel contained way too much lettuce to cost nearly as much as an entree. I feel a little bad being the dissenter from the 5-star reviewers but right now, 3 stars is a good representation of the overall experience. A lot of that is likely due to things that (hopefully) will improve as they've been open longer so I'm hopefu this will eventually be a 4 or 5 star update. That said, here's how it broke down for us: The good: The food (what was available) was great. To start, we tried the beef skewers (tender and delicious) and spring rolls (very large sized and packed full of fresh ingredients). For entrees, Hubs had kitchen sink rice which he really liked and I had chicken pho. The broth on the pho was delicious - better than I remember it being at the Bay View location. Portion sizes for the price are EXTREMELY generous. Both of us had enough leftovers for another full meal. The cocktails (again, what was available) were well made, unique and delicious. Staff seem to be really pleasant but a little unorganized and definitely short staffed overall. The "meh": I know Hue spent a lot of time getting the space ready but for me, it's lacking. Too many hard surfaces mean tons of noise and it just feels kind of cold & sterile. Again, things evolve over time do I'm hopeful they can do a little more here. The bad: Way, way, way understaffed. The poor solo bartender was slinging drinks for a full bar plus the entire restaurant space. The host was running to go orders, setting tables and manually adding checks. That meant tables were sitting open for 15-20 minutes unnecessarily - we saw at least one party get frustrated and leave. Their computer system isn't working so everything is written & added up by hand. It seemed to be throwing everyone for a loop. Our server was nice but it took 10 minutes for her to stop at our table, a further 20 minutes for apps and another 30 minutes after that for entrees. They were out of a lot of things at 7pm on Friday. Half the cocktails were 86'd and the first two apps we tried to order were unavailable. Came here on a whim with a co-worker for lunch. Interior is basic, but nice. Ordered the fresh rolls with shrimp, and they were delicious! Mint inside was nice, and the peanut sauce was the perfect consistency. Both of us got pho- beef for him, chicken for me. Broth itself had good flavor, I always try pho brother before I use any add ins like hoisin or lime! My wife and I like to support the local merchants and restaurants. We have seen this restaurant driving between our home and downtown and have wanted to go for a long time. I am typically a Chinese food guy but this Vietnamese restaurant did not disappoint. It is a nice small quaint restaurant that seats probably 30 max and has a full bar with one flat screen TV. The service is always good and friendly. We have had the Cha Cio (deep fried egg rolls) as an appetizer, the Mi Xoa Don (Crispy Noodles with stir fried veggies and your choice of meat or tofu), Com Suon Nuong (Pork Chop with rice and egg roll, you can add a fried egg for a $1), and the Com Chien (Fried Rice). All of the food was delicious. My favorite is Com Suon Nuong. We came here on a rainy night while visiting Milwaukee. We were attracted to this place because of their high rating. We are big pho fans so we were excited that this place came up during our research. There were many other Vietnamese restaurants to choose from and here fairly pleased with our decision. We started with their appetizer special, shrimp with green tea rice flakes (?). It was ok, the rice flakes were kinda hard. It felt like rice crispies and the pineapple salsa underneath the shrimp was good with the shrimp. Both my husband and I got the beef and meatball pho. I got the regular size and my husband got the large size. For $4 extra they doubled the noodles, soup, and meat! It was perfect for my husband but I can see a lot of people struggling to finish it. There was a little too much star anise in the soup for my taste but it was still good. My husband's only complaint was that it didn't have the other usual meats like tripe and tendon in it, but I usually don't eat that so it was perfect for me. Their drink list was impressive. They had a nice list of craft beers and their nonalcoholic cocktails was appreciated. I got the Green Dragon which I highly recommend. I've never drank anything with sweet basil in it. As much as I've been to Bayview and love their restaurants and lounges I have always passed up Hue for some odd reason. Decided to come here late on a week night. I have to admit I have never had Pho :( but my college roommate raves about how good it is all the time.... To start out with I ordered the Spring Rolls. Absolutely fresh, crisp and the peanut dipping sauce was perfect!!! Nice size portion :) also ordered the Beef Skewers with lemongrass and garlic marinated beef served with lettuce and mints for wrapping. The skewers were the best I have had in a long time. Seasoned to perfection and the mint was a sensual compliments to the other flavors. For the main course I ordered the Bun Dac Biet (charbroiled lemongrass and garlic marinated beef, grilled shrimp skewers and house made egg roll. Oh so fresh, so clean eating :) just the right amount of steak and shrimp and the salad was magically delicious. I got so wrapped up into this stuff I forgot about the Pho lol. The taste: Awesome. One of my favorite places in Milwaukee. The Pho is exceptional, especially if you add different flavors to it throughout the meal. Taste it plain first. After some spoonfuls (which may include noodles, meatballs, veggie meat, or beef), add some siracha for a kick, or hoison sauce for some sweetness. After more time passes, squeeze in some lime, and drop in some jalapenos. You will have a different dish than when you started, but one just as tasty. The mock duck special is awesome. Most things here are. The place: Quaint, which is in line with a lot of the best places in Bayview. Probably seats around 25, and maybe 6-8 more at the bar. Reservations couldn't hurt on a weekend night, but not always necessary. My face: Excited to have leftovers! Usually the bowls of pho are really big, so if there's leftover broth, we buy vermicelli noodles to put in the broth the next day. I was excited to hear another Vietnamese restaurant was opening in Milwaukee and went to have dinner on opening night. The atmosphere is unlike any other Viet restaurant in town. The dining area is dimly lit and the decor is very trendy with a full service bar and lounge. We opened with the Cha Gio (egg rolls). They were different, but good and had a strong cabbage and black pepper taste. My wife had the Bo Luc Lac (Shaking Beef - a literal translation of the word) with a delicious watercress salad and tender/not-so-tender beef. I had the Pho Tai Nam which is mislabeled and really is Pho Tai Chin. Pho, a staple of Viet cuisine, is usually the first dish I try at any Viet restaurant and is a good indicator if I'll ever frequent the establishment on a regular basis. The pho came with the regular assortment of sprouts, basil, mint, jalapenos and lime, which must have been cut by a bartender because there wasn't much juice. There wasn't enough broth once everything got in the bowl but regardless it was bland, needing more salt or fish sauce and beef flavor. It's the first time I've never finished a bowl. The non-Asian wait staff was excellent; service I don't really expect eating at other Viet restaurants, but because of that I'll be back to try the other menu items. I hope they add Bun Bo Hue (spicy Hue-style beef soup) given the restaurant's name and self-proclaimed style of cuisine. I'm hoping it's just opening day issues they need to work out, but the lack of other beef cut options isn't going to make this a regular pho stop for me. 2 stars for the food with an extra star for service. read more

I just moved to Milwaukee and, growing up Vietnamese-American, wanted to find a Vietnamese restaurant I could try out with my parents. This place had the most and best reviews, but I disagree. Overall I thought the place was average yet overpriced. Vietnamese food is all about family and comfort, so if you're looking for that, this is not the place to go. If, however, you're looking for some decent Viet food and willing to pay for a nicer atmosphere, you'll probably like the place. I ordered the bun thit nuong while my parents shared the pho. The bun thit nuong was alright. It's a pretty straightforward dish but they fell short on a some key components of the dish. First the fish sauce was too salty and would've been better with some sugar and vinegar. Paired with the beef, which was also salty, made me keep reaching for my water while eating it. The beef was, however, tender. The biggest drawback for me is the amount of fish sauce they gave. For an entire bowl they only gave a small amount of fish sauce. It was so little I felt like I was eating plain dry vermicelli noodles. The waitress didn't come back out from the kitchen for me to ask for more though and by the time she did I had finished my meal. Top that off with the hefty $15 price tag I really wasn't feeling the place. With that high of a price I would have expected either bigger portions or higher quality taste but instead got something I could probably make for less than $5. The pho was fine but came with a tiny plate of veggies/herbs so again, with the $15 price tag felt it wasn't worth the money. Had I paid $10-12 for each dish I probably would've rated this place 4 stars but it just really wasn't worth the money. Keep in mind though that I grew up Viet so I'm definitely more picky than the average customer, but you also get a review from someone who grew up eating authentic food! read more

For whatever reason, I have never eaten here in the 4 years I've lived in Bay View. I walk past it every day on the way to the gym! It's rarely busy and the servers are able to check back on you pretty regularly. I also like that you can walk up to the bar if you want to. When I first went we had the veggie meat skewers. I've never heard of this stuff or had it before, but I really really like it. As a vegetarian it's exciting when I find new meat substitutes that have great flavor to them. The skewers are listed as an appetizer but unless you're sharing them they could almost be a meal of their own. My brother got a spring roll that was on the appetizer list, it was the size of a small burrito. Really, you could get an appetizer as a meal here and you'd be fine. I got the veggie pho for my meal (the one with tofu, not veggie meat) and it is DELICIOUS. The broth is amazing and the noodles are great. I was glad I got pretty full from my appetizer because that meant I got to take some pho home to eat the next day. It's SO good. In less than a week I went back and got it again. My brother and my partner also really liked the food they got. Since going I have been wanting to go back constantly. The only thing that's a negative is the price -- it's pretty expensive. I'd rate the value as a 3... it quite overpriced considering the portion size and below average ambience. $18 for a Chicken Curry dish?!! Wow. I'd rate the customer service as a 2.5 tops. Usually get the order right, but never with a smile, never above and beyond in friendliness, and even sometimes coming across as rude, especially with order pickup during the last year. I don't know where to begin, I don't normally leave one star reviews, however, after my meal (pho steak and meatballs) I became very ill with vicious bouts of diarrhea. I took it upon myself to call the establishment and tell them what had happened in order to warn them in case anyone else decided to come in. The initial response was fine after I had asked for a refund. The lady who took my call was going to give my number to her boss in order to get the refund. However, this dumb broad redialed my phone number instead of her boss's number and flat out called me a liar without realizing she was on the phone with me and not her boss. Saying that, "they couldn't of gotten sick from the food because it had not been 2 hours". Along with a very dismissive and condescending tone on the phone. Completely ridiculous and an abhorrent lack of professionalism. Not to mention that 2 hours is an arbitrary number in regards to food poisoning. Given that it was the only thing that I ate today and that the person who was with me, which I had shared my food with, had also experienced the same vicious diarrhea. Wow. I just finished my delicious Pho Ga, delivered by Grub hub to my hotel. I never have high expectations when I have food delivered but this was quite the exception! I loved this dish, and I've had a lot of pho when I travel. First, it was streaming hot, and I know the in-transit time was at least 15 minutes. They gave me lots of basil, jalapenos, cilantro and lime, just like they should. And I loved that the noodles were on the side. The chicken broth was yummy, with lots of ginger flavor. Yes, I know the chicken version is a little Americanized, but if it's delicious, who cares! This space used to hold Magic Dan's Restaurant for a quick minute, and when I walked into Hue for the first time I was really thrilled with what they did with the place visually speaking. It is small enough to be a great date place, but at the same time it is open enough to have a small group out for dinner. Hue has a refreshing menu at affordable prices. The beef skewers are absolutely mouth watering. I was also pleased to see Hue at Zoo Ala Carte this year serving these bad boys up. Great spot for an app and a cocktail! The hubs and I went out for a "cocktails on KK" night and started here. We split the sampler and everything was solid. The crab rangoons were, dare I say, the very best I ever had. A little spicy, perfectly crisp.... Oh man. Talk-with-your-mouthful good. I had a cocktail made with tamarind purée. Love the creativity here, could've gone for even more tamarind... But maybe that's just me and the fact I would take bites off a block o' tamarind if people weren't watching. So I want to preface this review with my prior experiences. I've been here a few times over the past 2 years. Most of my early experiences were positive. However, my most recent was pretty awful. I ordered the sirloin (beef) Pho w/ extra veggies. This was a takeout order due to COVIID. When I got home and opened up my takeout there were very little veggies added and literally no jalapenos, which, in my opinion are essential. Their level of inconsistency at this location is what hurts them most. The servers are very disorganized. Sorry but if I'm paying $20+ dollars for a bowl of soup I expect it to be fantastic and consistent. I will never go back to this place as I can't justify their prices and their lack of care/effort even during a time where their business could go under. I even left a $10 tip. Immensely disappointed. I wanted to like this place. I love noodle soups, especially pho. The broth of my veggie pho was delicious (I had shrimp added to mine) but the mushrooms were too raw and the noodles were a little generic and sadly not as sumptuous and filled with soup flavor as I would have liked. That being said, the OTHER dishes looked delicious (sadly I didn't try them). The spring rolls were great. The seafood curry, the veggies with egg noodles - they looked amazing! Not sure if they recommend reservations but we walked in around 6-7 pm on a Sunday night and the place was half full and they asked if we had reservations. As they did everyone else that walked in after us. We didn't but they were able to seat us right away which was nice. There wasn't a hostess stand or area which was awkward when we walked in... maybe put one up??? Pho broth was well seasoned and beef-y. Broth not clear like you see at other pho restaurants and there weren't many meat choices either. I thought the menu said beef tendon and steak?? But I ended up with sliced beef and meatballs. With the amped up reviews and articles I read online, I was NOT impressed with my overall food experience at Hue. Although the ambiance and location in Bay View were perfect, it seemed like the food lacked uniqueness and taste. I ordered the Vegetarian Pho Special as recommended by the waitress for vegetarian customers. Pho, being a classic Vietnamese dish, I had high expectations, so I was surprised to see that a Vietnamese restaurant could mess it up. The "veggie meat" was a complete miss for me - extremely dry, chewy, and no taste to it (I expected it to be sautéed or marinated at least). And for being a $17 entrée I was extremely disappointed because I had tried amazing pho for almost half the price! This place is great. It was my first experience with Pho or Vietnamese cuisine. The staff was very helpful and explained the different meats and choices I had. They explained the condiments and how to best try my Pho. I have learned a lot since that chilly fall day years ago. I have even branched out to liking tendon. I ordered some food to go as well. Egg rolls, and spicy egg noodles with beef. I ate all weekend and it was great! read more

Food was good. Nice atmosphere. Service was good. Prices seem high. Chairs aren't the most comfortable.
