    Veggie Gyoza

Whenever I eat something from Hungry Sumo, I fall in love all over again. I have never had anything bad here! I love the appetizers, noodle entrees, sushi, etc. I usually order take-out from here but tonight I decided to dine-in with my mom. My mom is vision-impaired and walker-dependent. When we arrived, Alex greeted us and opened the back for us to go through, so my mom didn't have to use the front steps. He also walked us to a table, made sure the table was stable, and held it for us as my mom sat down. He was very helpful, patient, and kind. He also walked us to the restroom and held the door. Our waitress, Becky, was also very nice and provided great service. We ordered the veggie gyoza appetizer, the veggie delight entree, Sumo pork buns, a Spider roll, and for dessert we shared the chocolate and green tea mochi. From the service to the food, everything was exceptional!

Definitely a must try for everyone! I've been hearing such great things about this place and it lived up to those expectations. We were told it gets busy for dinner right away and with no reservations we decided to go right at dinner opening time. There was a line forming outside the door before they opened but luckily we were second in line and got seated right away. The staff is very friendly. They check on you often without rushing. Multiple people greeted us and then thanked us on the way out. All of their sushi options sounded delicious. I got the Very Crunchy. It was served with a fun presentation over dried ice. The sushi itself tasted amazing, even though sushi isn't my favorite. I got the Pad Thai for an entree and I honestly think it's some of the best Pad Thai I've had in a while in Milwaukee. The sauce to noodle ratio was spot on and the flavor was perfect with the right amount of spice. Portions were great as well. Overall, definitely make sure to stop by!

This was my second time going to this restaurant and the food quality still remains great! The ambiance inside was quite nice and the restaurant itself is very well decorated. The service was also great and very prompt. It seems like it is quite a beloved restaurant in Bayview as we had to wait 30 minutes to get seated on a Thursday night. I got the crispy shiitake bao buns which were $11. The buns were soft and the mushrooms were seasoned well and crispy. For my entree I ordered a classic red curry ($14) which was quite tasty and on par with curries I've had at other restaurants. Overall a great dining experience.

It's hard to find a good ramen spot around town, everywhere just tastes watered down. However, ever since my fave spot for ramen stopped serving ramen, I had to find a different place. Hungry Sumo is the only place that satisfies my ramen craving in Milwaukee (and also serves pretty decent rolls as well). I've only been here twice since living here, but I definitely need to come here more often. Their tonkotsu ramen is the only one I get and I've never had a bad bowl before. During our most recent visit here, we (2) came around 12:30-1pm on a Saturday and was able to be seated quickly. We shared a Hottie Hottie (4.5/5, delicious and recommend if you like a kick) and ordered the tuna poke, which was a lot tastier than it looks, and the tonkotsu ramen. We were in and out in about 1.5 hours or so and had a delicious meal here. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a hot bowl of ramen and good sushi!

This is my favorite Tom Kha in the city. Go and expect a wait, they will put you on a list and text you when ready. I recommend going to Crafty Cow across the street for a drink while you wait. I've noticed that the wait isn't as long as they say it'll be. Great sushi and other food as well.

My #1 restaurant in Milwaukee hands down! Love the fresh quality sushi for a reasonable price. Service is top tier. Love coming for lunch as it usually easier to get seating then around dinner time. Not to mention they have a great lunch special!

    Crispy shiitake bun $10.95

AMAZING 10/10! Hungry sumo has mastered the golden trio: ramen, poke bowl, and sushi. Top recommendations include the poke bowl ($17.95) which was a flavorful combination of seaweed salad, three types of poke, and veggies, AND it comes with a side of miso soup! Both ramen bowls were tasty! The spicy miso ramen ($17.5) had a generous cut of pork with minimal fat and definitely earned its name as spicy. Yasai ramen ($16.5) is a veggie friendly option which we love. Additionally, the sumo pork buns were both sweet and savory with a thick cut of pork belly ($11.95, shiitake $10.95) and the drogon roll had a crispy shrimp tempura ($14.5) The service was fast and waiters were attentive and accommodating for my friend who is a T1D. The ambiance was thoughtful including candles and dim lighting as the evening progressed. Perfect for a date night!

    Tonkatsu Ramen

I am a ramen connoisseur and sadly have yet to have amazing ramen in Milwaukee. While this was creamy and the noodles were good, the broth was just too heavy and thick. The umami was strong and could be of people's preference but not for me. The egg was overcooked and not as jammy, and the pork was okay. Great portion of meat compared to most places, but was honestly just an extra tender pork chop, not the traditional chashu pork cut of meat. Super busy place with great decor, I would come back to try the rolls that I have heard many good things about.

Come hungry, leave full! Although, expect a wait. We got there around 5:45pm on a Friday and had an hour wait. We overheard at 6:45 that it was a 2 hour wait!! Now is it worth the wait? YES!! We started with the Pork Buns, which are absolutely worth the hefty price. Then we had the crab Rangoon which were the best I've ever had. Every bite had the cream cheese filling and the dipping sauce accompanied the rangoons perfectly. Now for the meals. The Pad See Eiw I will quite literally be dreaming about. One of my favorite bites in Milwaukee. However, I was not impressed with the teriyaki chicken. It needed double the sauce!! The spicy crab roll was fine but I've had better sushi in Milwaukee. The pork buns, crab Rangoon and Pad See Eiw made this place a 5/5 so definitely consider getting one (or all) of those items if you check out Hungry Sumo!

Service really stole the show friendly, fast, and incredibly observant. Our server gave fantastic recommendations and guided us through the menu to accommodate our requests. The tuna tartare was the highlight of the meal, both in presentation and flavor. I ordered the pad Thai with shrimp; the shrimp were a bit overcooked, and the rolls could've used a bit more flavor. That said, the overall experience more than made up for those small misses. Very cute spot with great service.

    Hottie Hottie

The Hottie Hottie is fantastic!! Nicest staff and service is great! This is always a stop in the way to the airport.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this place! I've heard good reviews but never had a chance to stop by sooner. The sushi was delicious and you get a solid amount for what you're paying. I also had the ramen which was delicious, but I forgot to take a photo! The service was decent for a busy Thursday night. Make a reservation if you can but the wait is worth it

    Pad See Ew
    Michelle L.

wish this were worth the 75 min wait... good and comparable to rice n roll but we felt sooo rushed as they were closing. we were told that we would have until 10pm despite them closing at 9:30 but around 9:20, they constantly were coming over/hovering and waiting to SWIPE away our plates. they handed us the check so quick. If they hadn't told us we had until 10, we probably would've rushed a bit more but it's not like we were taking our time either. there were 2 other parties still there too and we ended up leaving around 9:40. honestly didn't feel like I got to properly enjoy my meal. the pad see ew was good -- tofu a bit too firm but noodles were appropriately saucy. the hottie hottie was delicious though and stood out as an appetizer

The crispiness is always spot-on and I love that they give you just enough sauce to give everything a good coat and flavor but not too much that the chicken is drowning. I also really love the rice cakes that they add into the tenders and wings, it's like a nice little chewy treat to go with everything. Their fries are a LOT of fries! My wife and I have learned we can share one order of them. They have a bunch of varieties of seasonings you can add to the fries but I tend to get mine plain and just eat it with ketchup. If you are celiac or gluten-free, I don't recommend ever eating here. While they have a dedicated gluten-free menu with options for changing things out, on two separate occasions (of the 4 times I've been there) they've made a mistake. It puts you in a challenging and uncomfortable situation when you are curious about something actually being gluten-free. I know for myself, you don't want to insinuate that you don't trust your server! My most recent visit there I had the shittake/vegetable Ramen with rice noodles. I explained that I can't have soy sauce because it contains wheat. I explained that if they have tamari that they could check if it is wheat free because I often can have tamari instead of soy sauce. I explained that I can't have anything that contains wheat. My server informed me that she would make sure that this was gluten-free, that the rice noodles would be replacing the Ramen noodles. While eating I was curious if the noodles were not gluten-free, and I was informed that they do seem to be rice noodles. We were also sure to order the tofu as steamed rather than fried so that it would not have cross-contamination. (Due to first glutened experience) Later that night and the following day I can report that what I ate was not in fact, rice noodles or gluten free, and I have been glutened. On a previous occasion, I ordered the fresh spring rolls with a sauce that I was informed was gluten-free with tofu. While already eating this, the server came over and informed me that the tofu was not gluten-free, and had been fried. I think that there may be some lack of understanding what gluten-free means and how it impacts people generally in most of the food service industry. I believe they did their best to try to accommodate. That being said if you are celiac or gluten intolerant, please steer clear! Very unfortunate because it was tasty. I understand that as someone who needs to eat gluten-free that I am taking a risk by eating at a restaurant that is not gluten-free forward. Although they have a dedicated allergy menu, two out of the four times I've eaten there it hasn't made a difference. Great restaurant, not great for celiac.

But luckily my husband quickly checked well before we were served and saw there were reservations available online, so he booked us one on the spot. We were then given two excuses, one by the bartender and a different one by the host as to why they couldn't honor the reservation: (1) there were no tables available for us (note the place was half empty, but we supposed maybe there were lots of reservations coming later--nope, the place was still half full by the time we left); (2) we had to make the reservations 30-40 minutes in advance and we didn't do that so even though we did have a reservation, they couldn't honor it because we made it too soon to the reservation time (WOW--complete BS). We were peeved but decided we should just enjoy our dinner. BUT as we were finishing up, about 5 couples came in WITHOUT a reservation and both the host and the bartender gave each couple the option to either sit at the bar or at a table. When I confronted the bartender about it, she claimed "they weren't supposed to do that." WHAT?! She literally just offered a couple a table without a reservation. What do you mean?! It was insulting. Anyway, we will absolutely NEVER come back here. The tip we left was solely for the kitchen staff who were hard at work and doing an honest job. I completely agree that this isn't authentic chinese food, but approachable fusion that tries to keep it truthful to the flavors and presentation. The highlight of the meal was the peking duck, which they only have about 2 orders of a night. We snagged it immediately when we sat down and it can easily feed 4 people with the sides. The duck was juicy and cut into thick pieces, so it was more of a steak rather than a bao style that I am used to. Nevertheless, it was delicious and even warmed up well the next day. The green onion wraps were...strange in my opinion. They fell apart easily and didn't have the best flavor that complemented the duck. Overall, I would come back for the duck itself, but everything else was average or extra salty. Service was great and the staff are very attentive. Happy eating!

The vibe: It was packed at 7:15 PM on a Sunday, and they held firmly to our reservation time--which is understandable given the crowd. We took a nice stroll while waiting, so no harm done. Once seated, the service was excellent--attentive, prompt, and professional. The food: This is clearly high-end Americanized Chinese food, not authentic regional cuisine. If you go in expecting that, you'll have a better experience. The menu reads like a "greatest hits" collection--familiar dishes done with nicer ingredients and presentation. What worked well: Smashed Cucumber - A strong start. The cilantro and bean sprouts were exceptionally fresh, and the peanut finish added nice depth, though the sauce leaned a bit salty for my taste. Service and atmosphere - polished and efficient. What fell short for me: Wonton Soup - The wrappers were thicker than I prefer; I like a more delicate, translucent skin. The leek-based broth was pleasant, though. Salt & Pepper Cod - The seasoning was good, but the cod pieces were too thick, so the center remained bland. Halving the thickness would improve the texture. Mongolian Beef - Tender meat, but I wanted thicker cuts and larger onion pieces for more bite. It leaned a bit soggy for my preference. Rice Cake with Pork Belly - Pork belly was well-executed, but too many rice cakes overwhelmed the dish. The flavor leaned Korean (almost kimchi-like), which felt like a departure from the rest of the menu. Beef Chow Fun - Felt repetitive, using the same thin-sliced beef and bean sprouts as other dishes. I'd prefer charred broad rice noodlesthat are thin. These rice sticks were wide and thick,so like the cod, the center of the rice sticks were bland. I also preferred more eggs in this dish for variety. The overall pattern: Many dishes share similar ingredients and sauce profiles, which makes sense for a busy kitchen but does reduce variety across the meal. Bottom line: If you're looking for authentic, nuanced Chinese cooking, this probably isn't your spot. But if you want a polished, upscale version of familiar Chinese-American favorites in a great location, with reliable service, Dan Dan delivers that well. I personally wouldn't return, but I can see why it's popular--especially for the crowd that wants comfort food in a nicer setting.

Our server, Adam, was quick and attentive. He was funny, suggested items for us to try, and was very tentative of our friend's food allergy. We started the night with a few drinks; #39 non-alcoholic Paloma, #129 non-alcoholic sbagiato, and #33 Sherry Pear-Y. All of which were absolutely amazing! Then we ordered the Chili Crisp Deviled Eggs (comes with two pieces), Crispy Thai-Style Oyster Mushrooms, Cappelletti, Slow-braised Bison Cheek, Cha Ca La Vong (Catfish), and the Wood-fired Bavette Steak. Where do I begin? First off, everything was fantastic! Delicious, creative, and memorable. Some dishes even had us ordering seconds! First the Chili Crisp Deviled Eggs: so creamy! We ended up ordering another plate of them (four orders) because one wasn't enough for the four of us. The Crispy Thai-Style Oyster Mushroom: insanely seasoned! It was crispy and the kick of the Thai chili peppers, made it our tables favorite (we ordered another plate of this)! The bits of crunch rice mixed in was also a pleasant surprise. The bits of green beans and cucumber was a nice way to cool the kick of the spices. The Slow-braised Bison Cheek: It was very interesting. Very soft and when paired with the polenta cake, mozzarella, and carrot, it tasted amazing. Cha Ca La Vong (Catfish): Also very interesting. It tastes very similar to a Vietnamese catfish soup! The pineapple fish sauce paired amazing with the glass noodles. The only complaint I have about this dish, was that the glass noodles weren't fully cooked, so they were a bit hard. The Wood-fired Bavette Steak: My god, this was amazing! It was perfectly cooked, the dark chocolate bordelaise paired with the mushrooms and steak was incredible. Like I said, everything was amazing! Our table was blown away with the creativity and quality of the food. The service was amazing, everyone was very sweet and helpful. The atmosphere was lovely and quirky. It was fun spotting all the duck decorations. Honestly, cannot rave enough about this place, I look forward to the next time I visit!

The servers here know the menu very well which was super helpful when deciding what we wanted to order. The food was good but out of the 4 dishes we ordered the Tempura Nori Roll GIMMARI was the only memorable item to me and our server said it would be rotated off of the menu. I can tell that there has been a lot of care and detail put into the experience here and I can really appreciate that.

It's one of those restaurants that has stayed consistently good over the years, which is why I keep coming back. My favorite is the Massaman curry with chicken and fried rice. It's always full of flavor, comforting, and exactly what I'm craving every time I order it. What I appreciate just as much as the food is how welcoming everyone is. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by several staff members with a smile, and that friendly service makes every visit feel like they're genuinely happy to see you. If you're looking for a place with delicious food, consistently great quality, and people who truly care about their customers, I highly recommend stopping by. After all these years, it's still one of my favorite places to eat, and I'll happily keep coming back.

I had ordered a cup of Tom Kah and was delivered and charged for a bowl of soup, which was a big price difference. That was a tad annoying just because we had nearly four different people approach our table to check on us to start. The timing of our dishes was off as well. I received my Pud See Yew and it was nearly 10 minutes until the Pud Thai came out and when it did the food had a horrendous burnt taste. We did send it back and they gladly corrected it, but at the same time something seemed off with communication. Our servers were nice, but they filled our waters like 30 times - every time we took a drink it seemed. Although very attentive, felt a bit overdoing it and didn't allow us to chat consistently without interruption of asking how is everything when we didn't really have food yet. I would come back because the food was so good.
