What a cool and trendy spot for some delicious Thai food. PARKING: Street parking! We came late on a Saturday and had to park a little further down the street and walk to the restaurant. AMBIANCE: A sleek and modern space with large windows to let in natural light. There's a bar and plenty of seating throughout. SERVICE: The servers were all quite knowledgeable about the food especially when describing the items we ordered. Refilled waters quickly which was nice. Very friendly and attentive for sure. Also we made a reservation online just in case it was super busy which was a nice option. We were seated almost immediately when we arrived. FOOD: Pork Jowl: The SAUCE with this was delicious. Meat was flavourful and tender. Melts in your mouth. Fried Tofu: Twas okay. Pad Thai: Sweet and savoury, crunch from the peanuts. A yummy overall dish. Crab Fried Rice: Healthy portions of real crab and tastes really good. The sauce that came with this was also delicious. Duck Confit Red Curry: Another banger. Delicious. Loved the lychee that added sweetness to the dish. OVERALL: I'm impressed especially given all the Thai places in Portland. It feels upscale but was so casual. Also the drinks were really good. TLDR: Huge fan. this is properly outstanding Thai culinary dining experience and the best I've had in Portland thus far (by a wide margin). The longer full review: The ambiance is a bit too corporate for my taste. It lacks warmth and aesthetics of the best fine dining experiences (which I think Canard PDX location does rather well) and feels a bit like a nice hotel lobby. That said, where this restaurant does execute is where it counts most, the food. Crab Fried Rice: usually an item I skip as its woefully devoid of actual crab and just has a needless fishy taste. Not at Hua Hin! This was excellent and the sauce it comes with is perfectly paired. Beef Salad: aka Tiger Tear in many other Thai restaurants and here it is one of the most authentic and perfectly executed as I've had in decades. Spicy, tang from lime, distinct burnt rice powder compliments perfectly with mint cutting through. Its very good. Shrimp Toast: seemed like a gimmicky offering for the less brave in your group but turned out to also be utterly delicious and full of bold flavor when the vinegary sauce is spooned on. Green Curry: Wow. I havent had curry this good since LA or NYC at some super authentic hole in the wall where hardly anyone spoke English. This is the stuff. Its strong, bold, floral yet rich from the coconut milk base. It was unbelievable. Fried Whole Fish - Tamarind Sauce: the fish was fresh but this wasnt my favorite. For the price, there's simply too much breading. While I liked the crunch, I barely tasted the fish. Also, while the sauce was delicious at first bite, it quickly becomes too cloyingly sweet and I'd have preferred it on the side. I would really like to return to try the non-fried version of this dish. Annoyances: that none of the main dishes are served with rice is disappointing. What are you supposed to spoon all of that delicious curry sauce over? Selling it separately as an add-on was a bit distasteful. The ambiance could stand to be improved, a bit warmer more thematic, inviting. At present it feels like a nice hotel lobby. The menu is just a tad too limited. Ideally it would be about 10% bigger and offer a few more protein options. Lastly, there's no wine on offer. Perhaps its coming soon? read more

Everything is absolutely amazing. I can't get enough. Whatever I've tried is always the best I've ever had. I can't wait to come in with a large group so I can order more food! The staff are superb, attentive, intelligent and kind. I can't imagine a better group to be fed by. Come in, try everything, be ready for flavor city! Spacious space that feels casual, but the food were elevated and absolutely delicious. In a sea of Thai restaurants in Portland, Hua Hin still manages to shine above the rest with their dishes. What an intimate yet warming time here! I came for a birthday dinner so large parties can be accommodated. Service was great, food came out timely. Small apps are shareable with 2 orders each. Took my mom here for Mother's Day and it was a great choice! They were so thoughtful and we got a complimentary appetizer and a sweet Mother's Day note with a rose. The interior is nice and clean, the front entrance has a few steps but they also have a side door that is accessible. The servers we had were very kind and the food was delicious. Our favorites were the oysters, pork jowl, miang kham, and the pomelo salad. Both our mocktails were delicious as well. We unfortunately did not get to try the pad Thai. We ordered it after our appetizers came out and our server forgot about it. It had gotten busy in the restaurant at that time so it wasn't a big deal, we still had enough food by the end to be full. This is a nice high-end addition to the east end of Hawthorne that has more casual restaurants, but Hua Hin brings an elevated touch with its modern Thai cuisine. The space is huge and contemporary, and service is friendly. The menu has a lot of Thai classics, but they're presented in a modern, sophisticated way. Of course, this means things are pricey. For example, the seasonal starter of spot prawns was this crudo presentation of two prawns for $12, so basically $6 a piece. But it was so fresh and tasty in its simplicity. My favorite item is the grilled pork jowl, where the sliced pork pieces were so tender it felt like they melted in your mouth. The duck confit red curry was a stunner, and the duck let so tender because of the confit treatment. I'm excited to see this spot in my neighborhood, which I predict will be a popular spot for special occasions. read more

Stopped in during their soft opening and all their mocktails are so beautiful! They don't have their liquor license yet but soon! Welcoming ambiance and very thoughtful team running this restaurant. I'm so used to bare minimum service and so when people are genuinely kind, it is noteworthy! The food! We have to come back and try more. During the soft opening they offered a welcome gift of Miang Kham. This is not something I would have normally ordered so it was fun to try. Great texture and flavor, so fun. We got the oysters, shrimp toast, steak salad, and barramundi fish with fried garlic. We would definitely order the shrimp toast again and again. The oysters are big so if you don't like tasting the ocean, better skip! We were so full we were going to skip dessert. So glad we didn't! The mango sticky rice is done perfectly here. Hua Hin is a Thai restaurant with roots in Vancouver BC*. So they have several years of success perfecting their menu in a competitive and demanding food city. Portland is fortunate to have a variety of individualistic Thai restaurants incorporating local ingredients with care and creativity. This is an addition you should try. I had the crispy tofu appetizer, the pomelo salad and a sample of the miang kham. The tofu was deep fried with a crispy spongy shell, soft tofu insides, and a house-made tamarind sauce with crushed peanuts. There was a nice garnish of slivers of fresh sweet red pepper and micro greens. The tofu was just out of the fryer hot and nicely presented as a little pyramid of about 1 inch cubes. Very much the uncarved block. I have never had that texture of tofu. The tamarind sauce was smooth, no pulp, and just the right tang, not too sweet or too sour. I enjoyed the pomelo salad. Pomelo is a fruit similar to grapefruit. In the salad the fruit was separated into kernels or vesicles about 3/4" long and 1/8" in diameter. I think a grapefruit section would fall apart if you tried to do that. Mixed in was toasted coconut, dried plain shrimp - not salted or fermented, leafy ingredients, spring onions, lightly toasted cashews, chaplu leaves, and a tangy dressing. The chaplu is similar to nasturtium leaves, peppery, but a little thicker. Very healthy and very tasty. The miang kham is similar to a Thai dish I make for house parties where the guests build their own from ingredients, wrapped in lettuce. The Hua Hin miang kham has coconut and shrimp wrapped in chaplu leaf with their tamarind sauce with crushed peanuts. Great presentation for the sample. All those dishes are in the flavored by ingredients style. The restaurant is newly remodeled, clean and modern with just enough, but not too many plants. Good table setting with solid fork and spoon, a thicker napkin, and a carafe of ice water. They are awaiting our lovely slow OLCC for their liquor license, for now they have several non-alcoholic mixed drinks. Service was excellent and engaged. They do ask about food alergies. The food here is phenomenal. We have a lot of great Thai options here but what I appreciate it here is that they have dishes that you typically wouldn't see on a traditional time menu. I think they do have one pad Thai, but everything else has a twist to it. We got the steamed Barramundi in lime sauce and it was delicious, you're getting a WHOLE fish. So soft and light and bright in flavor. The tofu mushroom dish was a mix of flavor and texture that can't be beat. We went here for the first time granted this place is super new. They don't even have their website up and running yet. It can only get better from here. Every appetizer we had was amazing. The curry was delicious but a little overdressed with ingredients that could've been left out and the rice didn't come with the curry. You had to add it separate that I didn't care for. And they're not serving wine yet because they just got their liquor license, but I'm sure that will change down the road. Although a few specialty drinks were available. Along with a couple beers. The service was spot on from the moment we walked in the door. We were greeted quickly and seated right away. Water was provided as we were seated and our server arrived shortly thereafter. She provided an explanation of the beverage offerings and an overview of the menu, and took our drink orders. Drinks arrived quickly and the unique mixed drink recipes were tasty and interesting. We ordered the shrimp special and shrimp toast (we like shrimp!) as appetizers. They were sadly out of oysters, so we'll have to arrive earlier next time. Both appetizers were unique and flavorful. We shared the crispy garlic the barramundi and it was outstanding. The sauces complementing each of these items were the perfect compliment, lots of bright and clean flavors. We were wandering around the neighborhood trying to find something to eat and we saw this new spot that look like is wasn't too busy. Turned out today was their soft opening! Wow! What a terrible disappointment. I was so beyond excited about this place, especially with all the hype on social media, but when I went in they were sold out of all the star dishes like the fish entree, the mango sticky rice-which was the only dessert that they had, and another main fish that I don't remember. The service was incredibly slow. We ordered the oyster as an appetizer and the tom kha soup and the larb and two mocktails and our food took forever to come out. I actually saw it just sitting there not being taken to the table for a while. The drinks came out AFTER the food and I actually watched as the bartender took forever to get to the drinks. He was too busy talking to his coworker and there was only one girl who was our main server who actually seemed like she knew what she was doing. Everybody else was just wasting time in my eyes. The soup was so spicy that it wasn't enjoyable and we had to send it back. It was just filled with Thai chili peppers. The oysters were actually really good and very big. The larb was okay. It was really dry and crumbly. I ended up sending the soup back and getting Pad Thai with shrimp instead and it was pretty flavorful but still overpriced for just Thai food that wasn't really that special. There are a lot of really good Thai restaurants in Portland, so in order for this restaurant to really stand out and charge the higher prices, I feel like they really have to elevate their menu and service experience more. Everything about our experience was wonderful. We ordered a number of dishes to share and each was so good! My favorites - the Shrimp Toast was amazing as well as the Crab Fried Rice.
