Pork - roasted belly, parisian gnocchi, spring onions, turnips, pistachios, harissa.
    Jessica P.

I'd been dying to try this place, so we grabbed a reservation here for a random Tuesday night. The restaurant is in a little house and the seats are VERY close together. It's cute, but I do wish we had a bit more space and privacy. It seemed like everyone was celebrating something, which makes sense, I think it would be a great option for a special occasion. The service was great! The servers were all so friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, they made great suggestions. We started with the Hamachi - yellowtail crudo, kumquat vinaigrette, apple, kohlrabi. I don't eat raw fish, but my husband enjoyed it. We moved on to the salad - spring things, sprouts, crunchy bits, green garlic ranch. It smelled SO good when it hit the table, a weird thing to say about a salad, but the dressing was delicious. It was perfectly dressed and we loved the crunchy bits on top. For mains, we went with the Pork - roasted belly, parisian gnocchi, spring onions, turnips, pistachios, harissa. This dish had so many interesting flavors and textures, it was a true delight to eat! The pasta was spring in a bowl - casarecce, prawns, peas, preserved lemon, herbed breadcrumbs. I loved that everything was cut into smaller pieces so it was really easy to get everything in each bite. I also loved the pops of lemon, it really brightened the dish. The menu changes seasonally, so every couple of months, but their namesake cake is always available and I highly recommend it. The L'Orange cake - oranges, cardamom, torched meringue - was perfect. The top had a perfect brûlée, the cardamom icing was incredible, and the dollops of orange really elevated it. This is a great option if you love complex but approachable dishes that play with textures and flavors. I do wish the seating was a little different and some of the portions were a little bigger, but smaller portions gives you the opportunity to try more things. Lean into that and enjoy!

Sweet cozy place, perfect for date night. We enjoyed every bite and had no room for desert. Next time we will definitely leave room for their cute little desserts. Service was excellent, friendly, and knowledgeable. The restaurant is on the second floor currently with construction happening on the first floor. Apparently it will become a wine tasting/ice cream addition to l'orange in the future. Street parking was fairly easy to obtain but be aware that l'orange signage is kind of darkly lit and difficult to catch your eye at night.

Great cozy restaurant. Service was a1 with food coming out quick. Plates are more to share so keep that in mind

    Valentines Day Tasting Menu

We went for the Valentines Day Tasting Menu as we have been wanting to try this place and enjoy doing tasting menus. A vast majority of the food was pretty good with the wines being hit or miss for my personal taste preference. The Kauai Shrimp still had some ice bits in it so that really detracted from the lighter flavors. The biggest issue though was for almost 300 per person it felt absurd at the end of the meal for not everything being top notch. Portions were decent for tasting menu size with some items a tad on the small side but overall I think worked well. The price for normal service (non tasting/special event) with sizes sounds more reasonable but unfortunately hesitant to give another shot. If doing a tasting for that much or even a bit less there are a couple others place around town that are much more worth it.

Drinks: - N/A Food: - The gnocchi is super soft, they use a non potato batter which lends itself to be softer than the traditional version. The carrots in this dish added an earthy dimension to it that I enjoyed - The soup is a French onion soup, the gruyere on top is amazing. It's rich, it's not very pungent (in a good way), there's a slight tanginess and acidity to the soup that I liked, I'd say this is a must get appetizer - The pork phenomenal, our server described it as similar to pork belly in texture and they were spot on with that description. The pork melts, this dish can be a little deceiving since the portions don't look that big, but the richness of the dish can fill you up fast, so don't let looks fool you - The sorbet was whatever, it was okay - The early grey ice cream is a great dessert, the tea flavor really comes out. Sometimes when I have tea infused ice cream I have a hard time detecting the tea, but this place does not pull its punches in the best way. The tea aroma lingers. If you have a sweet tooth or some extra room in the tank after your meal, get this. I do however wish that the cookies on top were softer, I think that would compliment the ice cream a little better than the crumbly texture Ambience: - This place is an old apartment building that is converted into a restaurant, it's a very unique ambience. It goes without saying that since this restaurant is a renovated apartment unit, it feels very homey - It's a smaller place that is packed in so don't expect a lot of wiggle room when moving around - The bar area and bar seating is beautiful I really liked the aesthetics of it. I noticed that the cutlery cabinets are actually Husky tool chests/workbenches which I thought was a clever way to use different storage options for kitchen utensils Overall: I totally would come here again. It was an unassuming place, and felt like I was walking into someone's home when I arrived. The staff were wonderful, they engaged with the customers and made small talk feel less like a chore and more like a real conversation. I can tell they're passionate about the restaurant which made me like the place more. They have plans for renovating the downstairs to be a deli of some sort, whenever that's done I'm definitely going to check it out. I really enjoyed my time here, I would recommend it for a date night though you should know that everything in that place is an echo chamber so don't be surprised if you find yourself eavesdropping or getting eavesdropped on. My girlfriend and I were dialed in on a conversation happening next to us where a couple were having a heated talk. It was the best entertainment accompanying a meal that I could ask for (for context on the conversation: a lady was upset with her partner for not opening up with his feelings, she was grilling him for that. Apparently this is their 3rd date. Both my girlfriend and I felt sorry for him, he was getting reamed in a restaurant where all of us can hear the intimate details of her dissatisfaction with their relationship)

What an incredible meal!! We went with friends and shared a collection of medium and large plates which I highly recommend. We did 2 medium and 4 large plates and 1 dessert for a group of 4 and it was a perfect amount of food. We finished every bite of every item! The menu changes seasonally but the cauliflower, crepe, gnocchi, and duck were all delicious. The L'orange cake is also a special treat- the layers are done beautifully and the flavor is amazing. The chef clearly knows what he is doing! My only complaint (and it's very small) is the bread order is really small for the price and we had to get two orders for 4 people. The ambiance is very cute and perfect for a group meal or a date night. The server was very friendly, informative, and gave helpful tips on ordering. This was an all around wonderful meal and I am looking forward to going back next season to try their menu!

Back one month later and it's still impressive. Kat's not there any more but her replacement did a great job with our wine pairings. The hospitality continues to be superb and the food continues to be amazing. The bar is without doubt our favorite place to sit. Warm and comfortable. This is our new regular spot. I highly recommend this restaurant!

This was such a wonderful dining experience. Each dish had varying flavor profiles and delicious at that. I love the cozy and intimate atmosphere of the place, it felt like a fine dining experience in someone's home. The service was attentive and each dish was presented and explained to us with care. I haven't had a meal like this in a while, so I was eager to try many dishes. From their menu (which rotate seasonally), we tried the Leeks, Fall Salad, Cauliflower, Duck, and Boneless Short Rib. The stand outs for me were the Leeks, Duck, and Boneless Short Rib. The crab mousse in the leeks were so smooth and flavorful and paired so well with the soft poached leeks. The short ribs were perfectly tender and had such a rich flavor of beef that was complimented by the braised wine. I surprisingly loved the combination of the chickpea fritter and harissa together with the beef. Highly recommend!

A warm, inviting space on the second floor.

We were fortunate that we had houseguests arriving shortly after L'Orange gained notoriety via the NY Times. We were able to get reservations before they became overwhelmed. I love the space - they're located on the second floor of a building that's seen all kinds of uses in the 100+ years that it's been standing. Rooms are laid out in a compact maze that reveals itself bit by bit. It's a delightful place for a meal where you can feel like you're almost the only ones present. The menu is small, but with enough variety of starters, salads, and entrees that everyone will be able to find something they like. On the night we were there, beef, sturgeon, duck, mussels, and gnocchi were offered. The wine list had items that were exclusive to the restaurant, as well as others that were made by the owner. We had a lovely owner's Albarino, only the third local offering of this Spanish white that we've encountered. As I write this, I just looked at their reservation page, and, while prime time seating is unavailable, I'm seeing early and later availability on multiple nights. Grab 'em while you can.

I wanted to try a new place for date night and picked a good one. The food was excellent, the service was warm. I made a reservation for the purple room which has about 4 small tables. There is another room that has more tables and a bar. The restaurant is on the second floor of a converted house. I don't think they have an elevator, so you're aware. We got mostly what the waiter recommended. The chicken liver mousse tart was savory and delicate, crust being flaky and good contrast to the vinaigretted frissee. The grilled cauliflower still had crunch and umami. I picked the duck confit which had delicious crispy crust and a slight sweet, salty sauce. My husband had the pork coppa which is a braised pork shoulder over a sauce with delicious huge beans. I thought all the food was outstanding, the presentation was great and flavors well balanced. Ended the night with an almond flour orange cake, not too sweet. I might have skipped that one because the gelee was a little tart and cake a denser than expected. The waiter was great at helping us navigate the menu. I liked all the choices available and can't wait to try more of them. I don't think there is a wrong choice here. Their menu options rotate.

    Uni custard with trout roe

Fantastic meal here for my wife's bday. Very intimate space on 2nd level of a house in SE Portland. Excellent service throughout. Chef Joel Stocks (previously at Holdfast which was awesome) impresses here with innovative farm to table cooking. All dishes were solid, the wine was good, not great. Started with 2 house specials: Uni custard  with cured salmon roe and smoked scallops, topped with cured radishes - this was special! And baked oysters with summer veg relish, roasted gruyere on top with a shishito hot sauce. Then, a chicory salad with smoked trout roe, anchovies, bottarga - wow! The main was mussels, clams, baked cod, bok choy, blistered tomatoes ,zatarain sauce - best Mussels and clam dish I've ever had! Great baguette too to sop up the sauces! The wine was a French Old vine Syrah - Lionel Fury's Saint Joseph. Good, but was hoping for a little bigger, more dusty... All in all, this is a spot not to miss in the great Portland culinary scene!

    Lyonnaise salad

Visited last Tuesday with reservations via Resy (deposit required). Street parking is pretty easy. Not very accessible though, you need to walk up some stairs to get to the restaurant. The restaurant itself is very nicely decorated... and air conditioned, which was very helpful for the 100 degree day that we visited! We arrived 15 minutes early for our reservation and were seated right away. It appears that they serve only wine and beer for now. The wine selection was decent, with glass options for sparkling, red, white, orange and rose. However, the beer selection was poor, with only 2 options. My husband and I ordered a glass of orange wine, the lyonnaise salad, the gnocchi, and the mussels & clams. The lyonnaise salad was very tasty, bright, savory, crunchy, creamy... it had all the right elements. The gnocchi was also delicious, but sadly the amount of gnocchi was really small. The mussels & clams was a fun dish with the corn, potatoes, artichokes, sauce, and sourdough bread. However, one of the three clams we opened was full of dirt. We pointed this out to the waiter when he collected our dish, and he kind of just shrug it off and stated that "it happens." His response added to our disappointment; an apology would have went a long way. Overall, I was expecting a lot more from one of Portland's hottest new restaurants. The menu looks great, but the execution wasn't quite there for us.

The patty was cooked with a slight pink -- exactly how it should be -- juicy, flavorful, and clearly made with care. I was assured by a server one time that the chef creates a gluten free cheesecake that rotates on the seasonal dessert menu. The current offering is tiramisu.
