This was my first time being here at Hubei Restaurant. I was kind of struggling to find a Chinese Restaurant with great reviews and I stumbled upon this place with my parents that I persuaded them to try this place out. We've ordered a lot in this place to see if it was worth coming back, and to say the least it was worth it for my first time being here. It reminded me of a childhood memory I had in the Philippines and it was the closest thing I ever had that hits home-run for me. I guaranteed I will come back here if I ever feel like craving for Chinese cuisine that reminds me of the childhood days. This is the silliest thing but certainly not the first time that we've done this. We were hungry and looking for lunch. We both searched on Yelp and came up with Hubei. I remember that we had been at this location once before under another name after landing at SFO. It was late in the afternoon and close to their closing time. We parked right in front and were seated immediately upon entering. We perused the menu and made our choices. I'm a fan of Shanghai Chow Mein so that's what I wanted. She wanted to try some different dishes and ended up ordering Wuhan Bean Skin and Fish Gluten with Spong Cucumber. The last dish listed was great. The Chow Mein was good. The Bean Skin was okay but could have used more seasoning or a sauce. Overall, a good lunch and we will return to try other dishes. Now for the crazy thing. When I logged onto Yelp to post the photos, I realized that we had been here in September of 2022 for dinner with other members of my family. We went there on sat around lunch time and the place was not busy at all. Food arrived fairly quickly. The place remind me of eating at relatives or friends house rather than at the restaurant. Most of the dishes are ok except one of the veggies dish (I think it was luffa veggies one). The veggies were quite bitter. I had that dishes in many other places including homemade and they are not bitter (I usually throw away the bitter parts). Hu Bei Restaurant is the real deal. Buried in a strip mall between a gas station and dry cleaners, specials scrawled on a dry erase board, and waving ceramic cats. You're the only lao wai here, which tells you everything. Hubei sits dead center in China, caught between the north-south rice-noodle divide and the east-west spice belt where fire meets sweetness. The menu reflects this geographical chaos: dishes that shouldn't work together but absolutely do. This is what great regional Chinese food looks like. read more

I found this place through social media and wow, what an amazing authentic hubei restaurant! The inside had very traditional Chinese decorations and seating arrangements. There were many tvs around the restaurant displaying Chinese music videos and news. I came here with my family and friends, one friends who is from Wuhan, so he ordered the food which was amazing! Also, the woman in charge was very inviting and can speak many Chinese dialects - Mandarin, Wuhanwua, and Cantonese! She was so sweet and our toddler loved her. As for the food, all the dishes were phenomenal. My friend ordered the traditional Wuhan dry hot noodles which had a wonderful heavy sesame sauce. The bean skin was unlike anything I've ever had. It had a very nice crispy skin that contrasted well with the sticky rice. The lotus roots were also amazing, I've never had such small lotus roots with a nice tangy vinegar sauce. The twice cooked pork was pretty legit, and spicy! The huge surprise of the night was the beautifully plated pine nut fish which was even carved out too look like a pinecone. The sauce was sweet and the fish was perfectly fried, wonderful ratio of fish to the fried part. The cumin beef bones were very flavor packed with cumin and wonderfully cooked. The pearl meatballs were a hit with my toddler. It was so delectable, soft with a nice crunchy texture from the rice. Lastly, we ordered the fried pumpkin with red bean paste and the mochi was so soft and chewy. The red bean paste wasn't too sweet and it was perfectly crispy on the outside. The literal sweet surprise was the refreshing mung bean soup that the lady served. We were so impressed with the overly generous service and attention to our table with refilling tea and making sure we had bowls and utensils. We can't to come back and try other dishes! read more

This was a very good mom-and-pop restaurant! Our order was ready for pick up within 15 minutes. We got the Eggplant Pinenut Sweet and Sour Fish, Szechuan Eggplant, and Wuhan Hot and Dry Noodles. All of these dishes were easily 10/10. The fish was very delicate, remained crispy by the time we were home, and the sauce was not too overwhelming. It paired very well with the fish and satisfied a craving I never knew I had. The dry noodles had a strong nutty aroma. It was not too salty and was so rich in sesame flavor. It wasn't too greasy and they give a generous portion. It was really addicting! Finally, I was quite surprised by the Szechuan Eggplant. It was everything I wanted in this dish- they truly nailed the flavor. The eggplant remained a bright purple color, and it paired well with the woodear mushrooms. Came here with my in-laws who are from Hubei province, and had the best meal of our trip to the Bay Area! The owner of the restaurant greeted us and helped us understand the menu. Will be dragging my friends and family here again :-) Here's what we ordered: Seaweed with Spareribs Soup (4.5/5): this instantly comforts my soul. There's generous amounts of seaweed and spareribs, perfect for sharing. Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet (6/5): usually I don't like fish because of bones but this was boneless and addicting. The outside was coated in sweet and sour sauce, but not overly so that the sweet and sour flavors penetrated my nose and taste buds. It had the perfect crunch and the fish was soft. Must-get!! Very Disappointing Experience I haven't been here in a few years, and decided to pop in recently. But unfortunately the quality of the food has gone way downhill since our last visit. We were looking for a place with good Sichuan food near Millbrae/airport area to meet up with a friend for an early dinner (3:30pm) before our flight home and was pleasantly surprised to have found this gem. Most places were closed between lunch and dinner (opening at 5) and Hubei was one of the few open all day, which was perfect. We lived in the Bay Area for 8 years and I'm sad I didn't try them when I was living driving distance from this spot. Spicy dumplings (hot oil) - 5/5 Sweet bean milk 5/5 Lotus root w spare ribs soup 5/5 Shanghai steamed pork bun 5/5 Cucumber with garlic sauce 5/5 Sliced beef w pickled pepper & black fungus 5/5 Steamed rice 5/5 Portion sizes were generous and prices very reasonable. The entire bill was $78 for all of this ^ for 3 people who couldn't finish a few things :) Service was very attentive, food came out pretty quickly, was perfect temperature. I was born in Wuhan, Hubei, and both my parents were raised there and went to college there. When I found out this restaurant existed, I knew I had to bring my mom here. She was pleasantly surprised, enjoyed the food (we all did!), and became WeChat bff's with the owner. RESERVATIONS Made by phone a few weeks in advance for a group of 6, on a Saturday at 6pm. It probably wasn't necessary; they weren't too busy, but did have a couple other large groups. THE COST $136.31 total including tax tip. Very reasonable for 4 adults and 2 toddlers, plus leftovers. THE SERVICE Very friendly. I'm sure it didnt' hurt that my mom and the owner realized they grew up blocks from each other. She even sent us home with an extra dish for free after she found out it was my mom's birthday! THE FOOD 54. Hunan Style Beef ($21.95) - 4 stars We were very impressed how tender the meat was. This is also legit spicy! H2. Steamed Spareribs ($16.95) - 4 stars Another classic Wuhan dish! My mom makes this all the time but I have never had it at a restaurant, so seeing it on a menu was a little mindblowing to me. This was up to par to my mom's cooking, and that's saying a lot! H7. East Lake Eggplant Pine Nuts Fish ($19.95) - 3.5 stars Nice breading and crunch. H3. Ha Kuo Pan Shoots Fried Chinese Bacon ($18.95) - 3 stars Fine, but just not my favorite dish generally. Came in for late lunch. Interestingly, they are open continuously all day. Had the following dishes: -W1. Wuhan Hot Noodles: just like mamma used to make (if I was from Wuhan), nice chew to noodles, evenly and thinly coated with sesame paste. This is a must order! -46. Stir-fried bacon with dried tofu: tofu is supposed to be a special restaurant made bean curd. Curd is little tough but nice chew/texture. The bacon add a smokeiness that is balanced with the Large Green Onion (大葱, Dàcōng). This is also a must have. The flavor combo is surprisingly nice, subtle but still has a punch. -Crawfish: little spicy, nicely cooked. Real enjoyable to eat. Nice that they give plastic gloves and a trash bowl to peel the tails off the crawfish. Just wish they were shell-less. -Fish balls & fish cakes & meatballs platter: served as a soup, has some green veggies in there too. This is a good, savory, filling dish that makes you satisfied. Not a lot of flavor, just the main ingredients and that is all needed to make this an enjoyable dish. Service was awesome. Very helpful, polite and sweet. The one owner, a lady, was serving us. Hubei Restaurant was my brother n'law's choice to celebrate his birthday dinner. My sister made reservations for our large group. We were welcomed warmly by the staff and owners (I believe). Restaurant was tidy and decorated quite nice. My brother n'law's good friends ordered all the food, and there was a lot of food! Unfortunately, I did not know the names of anything I ate. Some entrees I was not too crazy about. Others were good. A couple of the choices I really liked and would love to eat again. My favorite was a soup. I think it was the pickled fish filet soup. I came here for the first time after my normal go to Chinese restaurant wouldn't even pretend to accommodate my order whatsoever. I was driving down el Camino and remembered there was always a Chinese restaurant in this location. There were three people working there in the front and they were not only nice people but all seemed like genuinely good people. I've never had their type of Chinese food before so I ordered somethings more commonly known. The prices were good for the portion size for what I ordered. Somethings are cheaper than other nearby restaurants while some are more. I was satisfied with the quality and flavors of the food that we bought. The way they took care of me, I'll be back to support them and to try more of their food. I hope this place stays in business for a long time to come. I come here for a specific dish, it is smoked chinese ham with bamboo shoots, and at one time, there for this other place in the east bay that featured a similar dish but the restaurant closed, so I searched the whole bay area for something similar and Hubei has something close that approximates the dish I loved so much. The restaurant is across the street from the El Rancho Inn. My first impressions is a clean and beautiful space with Chinese decor. I was warmly welcomed and had the tastiest Kung Pao Chicken ever! The chef really takes the time not only ti cook, but to prepare the ingredients. I have not seen each type of ingredient so finely prepared, and Kung Pao chicken has quite many, from diced chicken to all the vegetables that make the dish. If you are coming this way, I highly recommend this restaurant! If transiting at SFO airport again, I would do the same, and try the Hubei specials. Our absolute favorite was the W1. Wuhan Hot Noodles. They have a great sesame / peanut flavor and are not too spicy. The H3. Hankou Pan Shoots Fried Chinese Bacon tasted very authentic, but it came with a ton of bacon, bamboo shoots and celery. My boyfriend doesn't like celery or bacon, so it was a bit dissapointing for him. In general, I recommend ordering from the Hubei part of the menu, which is where the authentic stuff is. Hubei Restaurant is one of the few places in the Bay Area serving the food of Wuhan and the surrounding Hubei province in China. We started with a few Wuhan breakfast staples including Wuhan Hot Noodles, a bowl of chewy noodles in a savory sesame sauce (similar to dan dan noodles), topped with chopped pickled vegetables and scallions; and the Wuhan Bean Skin, a parcel of sticky rice seasoned with fatty pork and pickled vegetables and wrapped in a chewy fried bean skin. Another fascinating dish was the Hanyang Pearl Balls, which were little meatballs made with ground pork, coated in sticky rice, which had a slightly fermented flavor. But my favorite dishes were the "Beer Duck," made of chunks of bone-in duck cooked with bamboo and red peppers in a deep, savory, mildly-spicy sauce; and the East Lake Eggplant Pine Nuts Fish, a fillet of fish expertly scored, battered, and fried, such that the fish fanned out into a bunch of crispy morsels. The eggplant-shaped fillet was then topped with a red sweet and sour sauce and sprinkled with pine nuts (despite its name, the dish contained no eggplant). The sticky red sauce coated the batter, making it slightly gooey yet still crunchy, and the pine nuts added a nice earthiness to the dish. Overall, everything we had here was delicious, and the regional Hubei dishes were definitely worth ordering! Wuhan hot noddle (热干面）seems a little bit different from what I had in Wuhan. But it's still very good and close to the original Wuhan style. We ordered the salt bean milk and it was tasted a little bit bitter. We asked the waitress and the owner why it tasted that way. Came today with a friend right when they opened. The owner I think was maybe eating, oops. I've never really had Hubei cuisine before but my friend was excited and I like Chinese food, so hurrah. They had plenty of tables, given that we were both early and it's covid. My friend asked for some recommendations. The owner (I assume, her photo is on the window holding a dish) recommended the noodles. When my friend mentioned not particularly enjoying the noodles, the owner offered up the "tofu skin", listed on the menu as Wuhan Bean skin. We weren't sure what to expect, but wow it was maybe my favorite. It's actually basically a zongzi / glutinous rice pocket made with tofu skin instead bamboo leaves. The tofu skin was creamy soft on the inside and had the thinnest tiniest crispy layer on the outside. The flavors of the rice were excellent too- there were pieces of pickled bamboo and pork in it, and wow do I have to come back maybe just to eat that. We shouldn't have ordered rice lol. We also ordered Hanyang rice balls, which were pretty good, more or less what I expected. We got the songzi yu (I think it's the "east lake eggplant pine nuts fish" dish? But I didn't see/taste eggplant): classically sweet, deep fried fish and very yummy. I think we also ordered "shredded pork with water bamboo shoots", a very light dish to balance out all the rest of our heavy foods. All of them were excellent. The tofu skin rice dish was standout. COVID The restaurant seemed nicer than what it was 3 years ago with red table cloth and disposable paper plates and chopsticks. Service was friendly and both the waitress and host could speak mandarin and Cantonese. We ordered all local Wuhan cuisines such as the hot noodle, which is thick dry noodle mixed in with Chinese salty pickles and sesame dressing. It's ok, good enough dressing flavors, but a bit boring as there's not much other ingredients going into it. We also tried Wuhan tofu skin which is a thin layer of tofu stuffed with chopped pork belly meat and sticky rice and wrapped like a pocket. The dish is not as big as I imagined and it tasted a bit plain for me. But I can see it's a test of finger skills to wrap so much sticky rice inside tofu skin without breaking it. The noodle nest is basically savory fried donut with green onions inside the dough. Not bad but the normal long fried donut (you tiao) seemed more tasty. This is a Wuhan local breakfast item, but it's available here all day long. The beer duck is a spicy dish. It's not as big as I'd like but the duck pieces are soft. It comes with bell peppers and bamboo shoots. I can't taste any beer though. The Hanyang rice ball came the last as its freshly made. It's basically steamed meat ball with sticky rice in the outside. It's quite tasty inside out. Overall we found all these interesting dishes that we never had. Hubby said would come back to try more new dishes. I also enjoyed trying new Chinese dishes. read more
