Tofu Chicken w/ Salted Fish Claypot
    Steve D.

465 Broadway Ave Millbrae, CA 94030 Gourmet Village is an old school, family style Chinese restaurant. It has a wide variety of items on it's menu. Prices are fair to pricey for what you get. Table setting is bare to basic. If you need something, you have to ask for it. After visiting family in the hospital, I went to Millbrae's Broadway Ave to grab a meal before heading home. I decided to try Gourmet Village because they have Claypot entrees on their menu. This restaurant is cool because they have booths as well as tables. Server brought tea and a menu. They were busy with a takeout customers, so I had to wait a bit. I ordered: - Braised Chicken Tofu w/ Salted Fish Claypot - Hot 'n Sour Soup, Small - Side of Steamed Rice (equal to 2 bowls) The food was good, the flavors and portion sizes were okay. The Hot 'n Sour Soup for $6.95, could serve 2-3 people. The bowls provided are a bit small. The Chicken Tofu w/ Salted Fish Claypot was perfect for a cool evening. This dish is one my favorite chinese comfort foods. The clay vessel retains the heat, and keeps the food warm for awhile. Maybe Salted Fish Chicken Tofu isn't for everyone, but if you like it.....you love it. I have it over steamed white rice in a small rice bowl. I will definitely return and try other claypots. Total w/out Tip= $25.65

Lobster with longevity (ee mein) noodles

We brought in a fresh 3-lb lobster and catfish from 99 Ranch Market for the chef to prepare. He added longevity (ee mein) noodles to the lobster, and upon request, tofu in black bean sauce and spring onions to the catfish for $45. Great deal! Both dishes were delicious and wonderfully prepared. We also ordered the Hong Kong style sweet and sour pork ribs with green peppers, pineapple and onions plus pea sprouts (always a favorite). Only one server for the entire restaurant. I took off one point because of ambiance. The light fixtures were dirty and needed to be cleaned. Some light bulbs were burned out and needed to be replaced. Street parking. Overall, my family decided this is a restaurant we will patronize in this manner again!

It was relatively empty on my visit--no more than 3-4 small tables occupied and it was well after the lunch crowd. I walked in and waited for what seemed to be a long time before anymore came out and I wasn't able to get anyone's attention. I was finally seated and given tea, but no menu was given to me and I had to wait to get anyone's attention to get a menu. You figure once seated, you would automatically get a menu! I didn't bother looking at the menu closely and only focused on they Hong Kong style lunch offerings. I was craving and initially ordered the Portuguese baked chicken, but she said they don't have it at this time. I just ordered what came to mind, without looking at the menu and got the baked pork chop. My order came out relatively quickly and it was a fairly large serving. The flavor was good; the dish was smothered in tomato sauce with 2 medium sized pork chops, albeit a bit fatty and served on a bed of rice. Overall the dish was acceptable, but the service was lacking.

This restaurant has about 5 large banquet tables. If you have a large party and did not plan ahead, you are in luck. Finding seats here would be easy. The place has a steady stream of customers, but not too busy even on weekends. Menu is extensive. Food is on the salty side. Ask for less salt if you're watching sodium intake.

As I continue to explore new restaurants in downtown Millbrae, I decided to take a chance and try out Gourmet Village. Being a fan of all things sauce, I decided to go with the baked Portuguese chicken over rice. This dish came out incredibly hot, so hot that you gotta let it sit and air out unless you wanna burn your tastebuds. The dish itself was ok, and I found myself adding more salt and pepper. The egg in the rice is a nice touch, and overall for the price and portion, it was pretty filling. My favorite dish had to be the salt and pepper chicken wings. A very classic dish that I really enjoyed. For $7.95, it's a great appetizer to start with. Came in after 7pm with plenty of seating available. There's no music or TVs playing, and with a near empty restaurant, it was definitely a put on the AirPods and listen to a podcast type vibe for this solo adventure. Food came out quick, and the service was polite. If you are looking for no-frills, big portions, affordable Asian fusion food, it might be worth a try for you!

The first thing I noticed was that there was really not many pieces of ribs, maybe they made the ribs portion smaller to make room for the lap cheung I ordered? The dish description also says that it includes taro, but I didn't have a single piece of taro in my pot. Strangely, although this place seems to share a kitchen with Social Eatery, the rice was cooked much more poorly here, which is obviously a shame for a place specializing in clay pot rice. It seems like the rice had too much water added, so it was a bit overcooked - you couldn't feel the "single grain" mouthfeel texture you should expect from well-cooked, high quality rice. Since the rice was too mushy, it obviously didn't crisp well either. Though it had some small amount of bits stuck to the edges of the metal (not clay!) pot, it was definitely not the super crispy, well browned "faan ziu" I expect, and not at all like the pictures featured in some earlier reviews of this restaurant.

I also appreciate how thoughtfully they pack their claypot meals to go, which used to make ordering delivery feel like a safe bet. Unfortunately, the quality has really fallen off. The first few times I ordered, the bowls were packed with flavor and protein. This most recent delivery was a huge disappointment where the food had a laughably small amount of meat and mostly dry, bland rice. For what they charge, it felt like a total rip-off. Sad to see such a solid spot become so hit-or-miss, because the claypots used to be genuinely great.

There was a rotating skewer-ready charcoal grill at each table and we ordered a variety of food. We ordered garlic oysters in the half-shell ($10.95). This was cooked in the kitchen and brought out. We had Japanese wagyu ($25.95), prime beef ($6.95), pork jowl ($3.95), shitake mushroom ($2.95), chicken thigh ($2.95), pork sausage and marinated meat skewers. We enjoyed everything that came out. The crab was flavorful, saucy, and so satisfying to dig into. They even give you bibs upon request, which honestly feels necessary if you're planning to go all in. The prawns were also a highlight. They were a decent size, cooked well, and perfectly seasoned. We also ordered the garlic noodles, which were great and exactly the kind of buttery, garlicky carb moment you want with seafood. The green beans were a nice addition too and helped balance out the meal with something fresh and veggie-forward. The only thing I'd probably skip next time would be the raw oysters which didn't taste as fresh. Their fried chicken was delicious though! This is my new favorite seasoning, a slight edge above the salted egg yolk, as it doesn't taste as greasy. I wish we had taken photos but I was very hungry.
