Pulled off 58 and came in for breakfast. It's FREE waffle Wednesday!!! Yeah! This is our first time hitting that right! Lol. I got my two eggs, grits, bacon with toast and my FREE waffle. It was tasty. Bf got chef salad with Sid of taters all the way and his free waffle. We licked the plates. One piece of toast left ... brrrrp yummy breaky. Our server was awesome as well. She was the only one here and everyone handled!!

We didn't see any mention of it on the signs and so was not expecting a restaurant with a buffet. We looked it over and though it looked pretty good, the $20 price tag seemed a bit much for what they offered. Fortunately, they also offer a full menu which we chose instead. My wife and I both ordered their Country Fried Steak. Though it took a while to get our drinks, the food came out in a timely fashion, and everything was delicious. My wife ordered Mac and Cheese and Collard Greens for her two side dishes. I ordered mashed potatoes w/gravy and green beans for my sides. After tasting her Mac and Cheese, my wife insisted that I taste them too. She was right! They were some of the best we've ever had. Similarly, my mashed potatoes - typically a pretty ordinary dish - were phenomenal. The portions were also a decent size. The only negative aspect about the who meal was that the Country Fried Steak itself was only warm. It was very tasty and tender but just not hot like the other dishes. If it had been, I would have undoubtedly given Virginia Diner five stars. Though we don't have a need to return to Waverly, I can certainly see us driving the hour or so back for another delicious meal at Virginia Diner.

State Route 52 was established in 1928 to connect Suffolk with Prince George County. In 1933, this road became part of the new U.S. 460 from Roanoke to the Chesapeake Bay. The highway was later extended to St. Louis, Missouri, but its western terminus was eventually fixed at Frankfort, Kentucky. To accommodate travelers' needs, entrepreneurs opened gas stations, motels, and cafes along the roadside. Among these was the Virginia Diner, which D'Earcy and Laura Davis established here in 1929 inside a refurbished Surry, Sussex and Southampton Railroad car. By the way the Fried Green Tomatoes were absolutely delicious, service was excellent and the gift shop was filled with peanut delights! Absolutely a must visit!

I tried one with a red pepper jelly on top and it was fantastic. I was greeted with some warm faces that came in and had me sit immediately. The stuff that my waist line thanks me for not cooking, if you know what I mean... I opted for the country fried steak, mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese, brother chose the pork chop special with mashed potatoes and pickled cukes and onions. The mains were amazing. The pork chop was huge and thick and delicious, the country fried steak was so good, the gravy on both was delicious. The price was a steal. They were both amazing. The mashed potatoes were also both delicious, definitely homemade and not from a box. The baked Mac and cheese was just okay. It tasted like normal homemade Mac and cheese, nothing particularly special, but then I feel like baking it always just dries it out and sort of breaks the cheese sauce, so I would definitely skip that next time in favor of something else. The cukes were also just okay, we got it to feel like we were trying a healthier option, but will probably just splurge for something else next time. We were a little disappointed though, I do understand that this is a local restaurant and some things are harder to get and keep on the menu and keep in stock, especially if you don't want waste, but we initially tried to order corn cakes but they were out, then rolls but they were out, then went with biscuits. Then brother got the last pork chop plate. They have been out of pickle fries for "awhile now". If you aren't particularly picky about what you want to order, cool. I only particularly like cornbread/corncakes, so I was pretty bummed. The people are super friendly though, and a lot of locals seem to come by for their hotdogs (like, a LOT. Clearly we are missing something not ordering the dogs.) I'll definitely be back on days that I had a really healthy breakfast and plan on breaking my healthy streak with something fried and covered in gravy.
