Let's start with the good! Great server I believe her name was Ann or Anna really an upbeat boon to your establishment. Good drinks! We ordered a very decent dirty martini and to mix it up I had a Long Island ice tea and was pleasantly surprised. (I'd prefer the martini glasses were to be poured full - but do what works)... And if we had stoped there it would have been a splendid evening. But we came for dinner. First off I was given a dirty menu, there was a chunk of food in it I shared a picture. Sloppy but not a tragedy. My steak and shrimp on the other hand died for no good reason. The shrimp was gritty and mealy i regretted the small bite I swallowed and my steak fit for a belt, just awful. Tasted like it was cooked frozen and served like a sponge. We actually over heard several tables send food back. My lady had the salmon and also found it to be sub-par. Skip the food, have a drink and take in the view - that's what we plan to do next time. I am not sure how anyone can complain about the quality of the food served in this establishment. It is absolutely scrumptious and extremely well prepared. The place is beautiful and welcoming. So I am definitely giving it a 5 star for the dining experience. Service, however, was slow and not top notch professional as you would expect in such an establishment. And I agree that it is a tad disappointing that people don't make an effort of dressing up for the occasion. Wrinkled jeans and sneakers ? Nope... but that's not the owners of the chef's fault . Dined at Hudson House on Easter Sunday for afternoon dinner. While the maître-de and waitstaff were extremely friendly, professional and courteous and the ambiance of the Hudson House its usual splendid character---I have been a customer for more than 40 years---Sunday's dinner itself left much to be desired. Pop tarts and strawberry butter get their usual A-plus....however, appetizers were sub-par, main course--below average....and deserts--much too sweet. The rack of lamb was greasy and bland...my wife's steak was tough and our daughters' seafood was nothing special. Perhaps it was Easter and the kitchen staff was rushed due to the large number of diners. You walk in and actually are greeted with a hello and not "Do you have reservation", We are seated at a table and within a minute or so a staff member comes to the tables and greets u s again and asks is that bottled or straight water. PROS: 1. The restaurant is fantastic. We enjoyed each meal. I recommend the French Onion Soup au Gratin and open-faced steak sandwich. Nice wine selection too. 2. The location right on the river is very nice. Makes for a lovely walk at night, albeit a very short walk (small riverfront). CONS 1. Our room (#6) was a non-suite room with a street view and balcony. The room was very small and poorly lit. The balcony was too small to use. No closet, just a small wardrobe. The ceiling fan had a one-inch chain so you risked getting your hand clipped to turn it on or off. The ceiling fan was not mounted to the ceiling and hung by the electrical wires only making us hesitant to use it. The carpet was stained in many places. 2. The WiFi is terrible. It dropped out regularly and even when connected was very slow. It takes so little to provide good WiFi. They should make an upgrade a priority. 3. The mattress was old and felt like sleeping on a board. Worse yet, the pillows were old and flat. Neither my wife nor I had a single good night's sleep. And we woke up with sore backs and strained necks. Really bad. Again, it'd take so little to upgrade these items (a one-time expense that'd pay dividends). 4. No coffee maker in the room and the kitchen doesn't open until 8:30am. I'm an early riser. I'd've loved to have had coffee in the morning without having to walk a half mile uptown. Again, a simple fix that'd make a huge difference. In short, the Hudson River Inn is way over-priced for what we received. Because of this, we simply will not stay here again. Eat in the restaurant? A lovely ending to a sweet day trip on a coldish winter day. If you like antique shops, and the idea of walking down "Main Street" makes your toes wiggle, then I would definitely suggest driving (or taking the Metro North train) into Cold Spring, NY. Once you're there and you walk all the way down to the Hudson, you'll be sure to see the Hudson House River Inn sign, established in the 1880s (or something close to it, point is they've been here for a while). My friends and I stumbled in here for a latish lunch on a Monday holiday, so the place was not packed at all. The main attraction of dining is the view of the river, as you're sitting practically in the enclosed with glass patio. The sun was strikingly bright and got in the way of our menu viewing a bit. For food only, I would give a 3 star rating. But the entire experience and the town was too lovely to just rate this A Okay. The funnest thing was the bread serving or something that looks like a blown up bun. It has a croissantish taste of the outside and a hollow emptiness on the inside. It is also served with strawberry butter (Yep, I said strawberry, or as my friend put it "It's like chocolate butter, except it's not chocolate.") Their portions are quite hefty so be prepared to be full after the appetizer. I emersed myself in the french onion soup, while others enjoyed some lobster bisque. For entrees half of the table ordered burgers which seemed decent. I had a chicken cutlet sandwich, which was very crusty and with two toasted slices of chiabatta bread was just toooo much to handle. read more

Came here per Kevin C's recommendation for a great steak after hiking Breakneck Ridge. We got there at an odd time, around 3:30PM but they still served us. The waitress was friendly and nice! They even gave us the dinner menu when we requested it even though it wasn't time yet. I loved my ribeye but the T-bone was just okay. We ordered both medium rare and mine was on point, but the T-bone was pretty much medium well. I guess it's hard to get the timing right for all the dishes. I loooooved my ribeye though! read more

My girlfriend and I took a day trip to Cold Spring without planning anywhere to eat. Walking down to the river, we passed this place and thought it looked nice, so in we went. We were very happy with our meals! They started us off with popovers which I was very excited about (I haven't had one in years)! For mains, I got the breaded chicken cutlet ciabatta with baby greens, tomatoes, and balsamic vinaigrette and really enjoyed it. The cutlet may have been a little bit too thin for the price, but it was very tasty. My girlfriend got a salad which she really enjoyed as well. I really liked the atmosphere in here. It was apparently built in the 1830's. The rooms were bright and spacious with windows on one side facing towards the river. There's a small bar (think like 4 or 5 stools) as well, and from what I could see multiple dining rooms. If you're in Cold Spring, I'd say this is a solid option for lunch. I'd like to come back and try it for dinner as I think it has a location and ambience that would suit it well. read more

Stayed here over the weekend and it's a cute place to spend your weekend away from the city. There is a train station ( metro north) only 5-10 minutes walk away that takes your straight to the city. It Gorgeous views of the Hudson river and really good dinner and breakfast. It is also extremely close by bear mountain ( 20 mins) and there are striking views of the Bear Mountain. A few things to keep in mind so you don't have your expectations too high. - This is an 160 year old house so the plumbings arent exactly the best. Expect the faucet to fail on you a couple of times. It's normal. - There was flooding by the hotel guest entrance and I nearly ruined my new sandals stepping in the dark. Management were not present after 9pm and the staff told us " hopefully the rain will die down. There is nothing we can do. This is an old house."... wish they could have done something about it read more

We ordered steamed clams and Maryland crab cakes for appetizers and then for our entrees - salmon encrusted with crab meat with Dijon Sherry sauce. Cozy old place with a beautiful view (some tables) and friendly service. We were warmly accommodated at the last minute. Food was nicely prepared if a bit old school in its conception; a blast from the 90s with puffy menus and stuffed mains. What lacked was the beverages. Bartender either didn't understand how to make cocktails or was trying to cut costs. Everything--even the stiff classics--was essentially a modified spritz: crushed ice with soda water and a nearly-undetectable splash of booze. Our polite but ultimately ineffective send-back showed these weren't a one-off mistake. Watery espressos were similarly undrinkable. Good news is that with everything else going for the place, these should be easy to correct--hope they do. read more

Had dinner at Hudson House last night, while staying at the Pig Hill Inn (highly recommend!) on a visit to Cold Spring. This review is, then, just for the restaurant. It was...fine. It's my opinion that given the $25-$35 price point, a restaurant like Hudson House should only offer food it can do really well. That wasn't the case last night. We ordered sangria, which was good but not quite sangria--very "punchy"-tasting, with a few pieces of fruit on the rim of the class. We then had a $27 appetizer platter for two, which included 2 chicken lemongrass dumplings, a portobello mushroom topped with roasted peppers, tomatoes with mozzarella, crab cakes, and shrimp. It was very good, well-seasoned and diverse in flavor--the highlight of the meal. For dinner, we had a special: salmon topped with lobster, which came with a side of cheesy horseradish mashed potatoes, green beans, and carrots. The potatoes were rich and flavorful, and the fish was okay--a bit overcooked. The vegetables were unseasoned and underdone. Not the best. We also had surf and turf. The steak was good, not the greatest, but good. The lobster tail was not well prepared. It was overdone and a bit dry and rubbery; good when submerged in butter, but otherwise nothing special at all. Service was okay, too. Standard American steakhouse service. Attentive enough and not intrusive, but just that. Little personality, and nothing that went above and beyond. If you're in Cold Spring on a Monday evening like we were, this may be the only place open. But the pizza here is as good as this, so I wouldn't strongly recommend it to anyone. read more

Really glad we chose to eat here out of all the restaurants on Main Street in Cold Spring. It can be easy to miss since you have to cross the train tracks and it's closer to the water but it's a lovely spot. We hiked nearby, walked around town then came here for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon in mid-November around 3:30 pm. We were seated right away outside near a fire to keep warm. Tables were distanced and staff was wearing masks and gloves. Gluten free bread available for sandwiches and our server checked with the kitchen to see which items can be made gluten free. Restaurant Week was going on so we ordered from that menu and everything was delicious. I love how they have seasonal cocktails and menu items. The Caramelized Apple and Butternut Squash Soup was one of the most tasty soups I've ever had and the Apple Cider Mimosa was perfect. They also provide a free popover and butter to each person upon sitting down which was a really nice touch. I would recommend coming here if you're in the area! read more

There's no way to open the windows for fresh air. Paint is chipped & peeling. The carpet is super worn. There were really big ants in our room that eventually I found in the bed. Everything is just extremely out of date, old and didn't feel super clean. Go to the tavern/restaurant but maybe don't stay until they renovate in the future. read more

Went to Cold Spring for a fall overnight getaway from NYC. The staff was accommodating, friendly and helpful. Our room ($189 w/tax) was tight but cozy. The four poster bed was beautiful but the wall paper matched the bedspread... nice but dizzying. The bed was comfortable and although we didn't have a river view room you could still see the river and mountains out of one of the windows. The room had a tv (as a lot of B&B rooms don't) which was a big plus for my BF. The location could not have been better, a short walk to the main downtown drag but a little secluded and right on the river. We dined at the restaurant on the main level for dinner. My boyfriend got the $33 three course meal: Crab Cakes- good but not lumpy enough, petite NY strip- flavorful but chewy w/good mashed potatoes and string beans. I got an ala carte dish of veggie skewers w/mushroom risotto- very good variety, cooked and seasoned well. We split the dessert- a pecan chocolate cake w/ice cream which was delicious. Our complementary breakfast was made to order and we had about five different option. They were very accommodating and let my boyfriend mix and match. The Pancakes were very cook as well as the home fries and muffins. My spinach and cheese omelet was tasty and cooked to my liking. Portions were hearty, real OJ and coffee was good as well. read more

How nice to sit outside and eat here after the Lyndhurst tour! We sat on the back porch facing the river and were able to watch people kayaking, biking and enjoying the beautiful day. I could have sat there for hours. We were given popovers with apple honey butter to start. I had the turkey avocado club on focacia which was delicious and big enough to split. My friend enjoyed the chopped salad. I plan on coming back when I go to visit the other local museums or manors. read more

We recently got engaged on the river in Cold Spring and stayed here for the night - the staff was so warm and welcoming, and also provided us with glasses of champagne to celebrate! They were so helpful in helping my fiancé pick out the perfect room for us to relax in, sending him pictures of multiple rooms so he could make the final decision! We had a great balcony overlooking the water that couldn't have been better! Don't skip out on the breakfast they offer - the blueberry pancakes are to die for! read more

And the bathroom was disgusting. Smelled and was very dirty. It was very obvious that a staff member had not checked the bathroom for hours. Where should I start? Ok, how about from the first minute you check in. There is two check in points. One outside, and one inside. The one outside is for outside dinning and the one inside is for inside dinning. But no where is there a sign saying so. So, after you stand on the outside line for what seems like forever, you're told to check in inside, if your reservation is for inside, only to stand in line again. Now if you get through this confusing check in system and actually get to a table, you're presented with 3 different menus. A prefixed, a River House, and something else which I cannot recall (was totally confused at this point). When our waiter came over, who was wonderful btw, he also admitted he was confused as to the menu choices. After finally deciding on which menu to order from (we chose the prefixed) we sat, and sat, and sat for the food to arrive. I ordered the lobster bisque, and chicken mallinase (spelling) only to have my order served several minutes after my companions orders were served. Now, my lobster bisque tasted simply like catchup and cream, not a bit of lobster to be had, and my chicken mallinase (again spelling) was cold and dry. Very very disappointing . I can't attest for my companions food as I was too taken aback from mine. On the bright side, all the staff we encountered were excellent, friendly, and professional. Our waiter was a French fellow, who seemed over worked yet friendly, knowledgeable, and personable. Good guy, excellent people. Perhaps it was the Labor Day rush, covid, and perfect weather combination which overwhelmed them but, the kitchen was totally off, the check in system, and 3 menus which really made management seem to not have a clue to what they were doing. Unfortunately, this was not a great experience for my husband and I. We have been here numerous times- had many dinners here and our rehearsal dinner 17 years ago. We came tonight because we were given a gift certificate. (We haven't been prior in several year). We got here early and had a drink at the bar. We were told we couldn't stay long because a rehearsal dinner party was expected in a little while. We both ordered a cocktail... mine was flat and my husbands was quite sticky on the exterior of the glass. The bartender was curt. Then at dinner we had a inexperienced waiter who did not seem to know the menu well or could not provided add ons when I ordered the filet (which is all I got - a $36 piece of filet). I ordered it medium-well and it came out on a very hot plate - seemly to have been frozen prior to cooking because the center was pink/blue and it also lacked flavor and the normal texture. My husband ordered the Bronzino. Usually in other establishments it takes 45 mins to prepare. His came out with my steak but did not look or taste like Bronzino.(again lacking flavor- along with the vegetables that appeared fresh but tasted canned). In fact the Bronzino was room temperature. Also, staff reached across me to refill water and what seemed to be the restaurant manager kept walking past our table as she inquired once how we were. (Not waiting for our reply) She also filled water reaching across without an "excuse me". In addition I expressed a dairy allergy and they couldn't seem to care less about it. This place is expensive and tired. Don't waste your money on bland, bad food. read more

WOW OH WOW!! my boyfriend and I made the right choice! Great spot in cold spring. After searching up and down cold spring for a nice place this was a gem. I got the veggie burger and my boyfriend got the turkey fig sandwich. They also give these yummy rolls with cherry butter. It was a nice touch. We were sat instantly. My clan has enjoyed coming to the Hudson House River Inn for years for the ambiance and drinks and great bartenders. Recently we decided to book a night for a birthday weekend. Although they did not have any Winter Packages available we did have a lovely stay. All of our rooms were quaint and lovely, especially mine that was a sizable suite with two balconies ($225 winter price. Our stay included full breakfast the next day in the beautiful dining room overlooking the river. Absolutely delicious breakfast. I will definitely come back here for breakfast again. They make great pancakes and poached eggs and the service was attentive and kind. Im so glad this place is close enough to home for us to keep going back to and enjoy. read more
