I first encountered HVG while searching for a birthday gift for my partner. I walked in to David's store on a humid Wednesday evening wearing sweatpants and an old t-shirt, having just arrived from the gym. One look around his immaculate store and I realised I was woefully underdressed. I rarely need dry cleaning services, but I spilled sauce on my favorite sweater...oh no, wait - that's what yelp told me to write. Let me start again. I brought in my partner's faux-pearl necklace to have it repaired per her request. I had dealings with both David and Nicole, and was quite charmed by both. Really just lovely people to deal with, and they did a fantastic job with the necklace, treating this piece of costume jewelry as I requested - as if it was a very valuable piece, because it is, to my partner. It came out looking beautiful, and since I wanted to present it to her for her birthday, I asked Nicole if she could put it in a gift box for me, and the gift box wowed me again. The job wasn't inexpensive, but I asked them to do the most with it that they could, and I feel I got what I paid for, not only in terms of the finished product (and the presentation, with that great gift box), but in terms of the stellar customer service I received. "I never endorse a product unless I use it exclusively." This review has been a long time coming, but we couldn't have better things to say about David and his staff at HVG. After living in the City for years, we began coming up to New Paltz to get into the mountains on weekends and met David shortly after getting engaged. We both had very particular visions for wedding bands and knew we wanted rings hand made with care. We've attached pictures below, but the quality of the work speaks for itself. David worked with us and laid out options that both met our goals and stayed within our price range. He hand carved and stained a "Damascus" pattern into one white gold band, literally every line, for hours we're told. He was then able to engrave the pattern of one of our fingerprints into another rose gold band, and shape it to fit with an engagement ring from another jeweler. These pieces were truly one of most special parts of our wedding and we admire them every day. We've returned to HVG for for maintenance on the patina on one of the bands, which David gladly provided without charge. Since then, we've had several other custom pieces made at HVG. David has always patiently assisted us with our designs and each one of them has exceeded our expectations. The flower token below was taken from an image of the wallpaper at the inn where we got married. David created a mold for the token has has been able to fabricate several of them for us, as pendants and the "belt buckle" style bracelet in the picture. There seems to be no problem these folks can't solve and no goal they can't find a way to turn into reality. At this point, we stop in every time we're in NP just to say hi and catch up. The staff all love to talk about what they do, and have true expertise in fine jewelry, and stones. This allows them to help guide their patrons in making choices that lead to beautiful finished products. This is a staff with real creativity, unmatched skill, a deep love for their work, and access to high-quality materials. We've enjoyed every collaboration and are sure that these pieces will remain in our family well into the future. The dogs are adorable too! Beautiful jewelry (especially high quality diamonds) but what really stands out to me is the superlative quality of their goldsmith fabrication (and other) work. I'd say they're best in Hudson Valley when it comes to working on gold and/or platinum pieces. In my case, they put a hinge clasp on a very difficult gold and sapphire bangle and the workmanship was absolutely flawless. I wanted to give my fiancé grandmas ring, but it went through a lot of abuse just making it to the USA from Eastern Europe during WWII; let alone another 40 years of wear off and on. It needed to be resized, and new pearls had to be ordered, and attached with a special epoxy. The gold was in dire need of polishing and small tweaks here and there. I had always known I'd wanted a colorful engagement ring, perhaps with rubies. David took my very vague vision and turned it into a BEAUTIFUL design I loved from the start, incorporating both rubies and a family diamond from my mother. He did a great job of listening to my ring-related concerns (I wanted a low setting so it wouldn't catch on things) and combining them with my general aesthetic to mock up a ring I couldn't wait to see in person. His whole team went above and beyond to make sure I got a ring I loved and was excited to wear: when we came in to pick up my ring, the rubies were a very different shade of red then I'd wanted - closer to purple than red. I had a oddly emotional response - I'm not usually so reactive - but everyone at the shop immediately had suggestions for how we might solve the issue at hand and find rubies that matched my vision better. We scheduled a time for me to return and specifically choose which rubies I would prefer from their stock, and once I'd picked, they exchanged out the stones at no additional charge. My ring is beautiful, and it's all thanks to David and the rest of the staff at Hudson Valley Goldsmith. For months, I had been looking unsuccessfully to replace the 15 yr. old pendant that I had been wearing every day and which had deteriorated. Ultimately went to Hudson Valley Goldsmith where they offered to make a replica of what I was replacing. Cost far exceeded what I was prepared to pay. John offered to look for something in a few weeks at upcoming show and I agreed. However, only 6 days later he emailed photos of 5 pendants produced by a designer he'd found. One of them looked like a duplicate of what I was replacing! Another 6 days and it was mine. More than what I had intended to spend but more than justified by the superior quality. We asked David to try it on but not only before we peered down and found a wedding band for my fiancé that David handcrafted himself. Could you believe they both fit us, perfectly ?
