Celebrating my birthday during my last year in my 50s made for a very special evening. My beloved mother-in-law treated us to a wonderful steakhouse in Yorktown, and the entire experience was memorable from start to finish. The interior is stunning, with large cathedral ceilings, white tablecloths, and an open yet cozy atmosphere that gives you the classic feel of a traditional steakhouse. One of my favorite touches was the mural of Federico da Montefeltro, the Duke of Urbino, displayed prominently on the back wall. To start, we shared the applewood-smoked bacon appetizer. It was incredibly thick, smoky, rich, and absolutely delicious -- the kind of indulgence where you can practically feel your arteries clogging, but it's completely worth it. My wife and mother-in-law both ordered the filet mignon, which was cooked perfectly. My son and I shared the bone-in steak, and it was so large we couldn't even finish it. The sides were simple and classic: creamy mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach, both done very well. For dessert, they brought out crème brûlée and chocolate mousse cake with a candle on top for my birthday. The staff gathered around to sing "Happy Birthday," which made the evening feel even more special and personal. A wonderful meal, a warm atmosphere, and a memorable celebration with family. I used to love going there for week nights happy hours and to see the smiling animated bartender Artan who always has a big smile and humor. Now it seems he disappears by 7Pm some week nights and a not so well versed bartender is there. It is sad that having a huge client base with whom the bartenders are well known there would be changes like that. He is truly the face of that bar and happy hour. Have enjoyed this restaurant many times but last night not so much. Went for restaurant week which has been a really great deal in the past. Last night, the baked clams were runny and lukewarm when served. The sirloin steak was half of the cut they've served in the past. It did not have its delicious char and medium rare was more medium. I stopped by for a quick cocktail with my sister at the Hudson Valley Steakhouse and we could not have been more disappointed. We both ordered dirty martinis. They were terrible. The drinks tasted horribly and the olives tasted old and like chemicals. We didn't finish them. We ordered the mussels as a little appetizer. They were ok. The tomato sauce tasted like jar sauce. The bread that came out was nothing to rave about and the butter was unsalted so the flavor was very lackluster. The service was strange. The bartender looked annoyed at everyone and everything they asked of him. His eyes also looked a little droopy, and his movements were odd. I'm not sure if he was sober behind the bar. I saw him roll his eyes at someone when he turned his back to them. The ambiance is old fashioned and not in a good way. They still use a food trolley which is very outdated. This place never disappoints. I had the Tomahawk steak for two, Knob Creek Rye, wedge salad, broccoli, mushrooms and onions, and Junior's cheesecake. The tomahawk steak was cooked perfectly to my request. My only gripe was that they didn't trim the fat (or ask) when cutting it for you. It took all my will power to not gnaw on the dinosaur bone. Others had the Chilean sea bass and surf and turf, mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. We had a fantastic waiter who loved to chat and tell stories and really knew his bourbon and whiskey and his steaks. The staff there are well-trained and work really hard. We hit a homerun when we happened upon Hudson Valley Steakhouse! Soup to nuts, you will find this place to be the definition of FINE DINING, but be prepared; it does not come cheaply! From reservation to departure, the restaurant is well-managed and well-staffed, the meals are prepared with quality and monumental portions, and the atmosphere is golden! When we placed our reservation on OPEN TABLE, we indicated under special requests, we were seeking a private table. Upon arrival, the kind and friendly manager, Tim, escorted us in, immediately addressing that need, indicating he took the time to read the request. Tim was unconventionally attentive to us as well as his other customers. At one point, he noticed I was distracted by the sun peering in through the window, so he went outside to open an umbrella over one of the outdoor tables, to keep the sun off of me. In addition to Tim, our sever Ryan was upbeat, enthusiastic and hardworking in his endeavors. In fact, he was so good in his craft, he talked me into the higher-priced ribeye steak. I'm glad he did, because it was prepared with perfection at medium-rare temperature. Julie enjoyed her chicken parmigiana and together we shared sides of steamed spinach and pasta with tomato sauce. The sides were mammoth-sized and tasty, however, I'd recommend a little less sauce for the pasta. I washed it down with a margarita, but the portion sizes were so big, we took a sample of EVERYTHING home. Though full, we were not defeated, as we shared a tiramisu, which lived up to our expectations. Owner Sergio who founded and owned Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan brings his excellent meat cuts to us here in the Town of Cortlandt! Great selection of wines and cocktails and the complimentary home made grappa or anisette after dinner drink is the perfect way to finish your meal. Service is excellent with white linen cloth napkins and tablecloth . Silverware changed out with each course. Prompt responses if you wanted another drink or anything else. Sergio adds a class touch by stopping by each table to ensure your experience is top notch. Oh did I forget to mention NOT NYC prices! What a great room with cathedral ceilings and elegantly decorated dining room with space between tables so you can have an intimate experience but at the same time hear and see the energy in the room. Oh boy, this is gonna be a bit of rough one. Good stuff first: Staff is very friendly, attentive, and seem to enjoy working there. The host/manager is also warm and kind and he has a good eye for what needs to be addressed. The double cut bacon is great and fairly priced for the serving size. I asked for it crispy, and they brought it to the table perfectly cooked and crisp all the way around. Definitely order this. Baked clams also done nicely. Cooked well, good lemon butter flavors, and not overly done with bread crumbs. I'd get it again. My wife had the shrimp scampi entree, which doesn't state in the menu, but can come with linguini if you'd like. Shrimp are plump and juicy. Sauce is similar to the baked clams sauce, and overall they were good. Price is fair for the quantity of shrimp (5 or 6, can't remember). Now to the trouble... I ordered the most expensive steak on the menu - the dry aged tomahawk ($113) - medium rare. It came to the table looking good on the sear, and the enthusiastic tableside carve began. The guy started the cut properly - cut the steak off the massive bone, then began cutting from the cap down to the bottom. The second slice revealed a dark purple color that continued throughout 90% of the steak. Rare, uncooked almost. Not what I ordered. I took a bite of the cap, the only piece that was adequately cooked. Good flavor, but the rest of the steak was not ready to be consumed. Needed at least another several minutes in the oven or the grill. The host came over at this point and said "Hey, how bout I take that back and cook it a little more for you?". I responded by asking them to fire me another whole steak. The manager/host agreed and took the steak back. He also grabbed my wife's untouched shrimp scampi plate and said he'd return with it at the same time as my dinner. They did not, however, take back the mushroom/onion plate or the spinach plate and instead let that become cold on the table. 15 to 20 minutes go by, and here comes the second tomahawk. This time, the carver knows how to cut. He removes the steak from the bone first and starts evenly slicing end-to-end. Again, same problem. Completely raw after the first two slices. This time about 80% of the steak is raw through the center. They also brought two new sides of spinach and mushrooms/onions over, which was unexpected, but definitely appreciated. This time, I called the host/(?manager) over and pointed out the problem. He again offered to bring it back to cook it more, but I was full and defeated at this point. To me, this is unacceptable in a steakhouse. The most expensive cut you have on the menu is served raw not once, but twice! I'd finished my Manhattan, and had moved onto a glass of red wine, which I think probably lessened the dissatisfaction I was experiencing. We stayed for dessert. The creme brulee and cappuccino were both good finishes, and they came around with a complimentary choice of anisette or grappa - I enjoyed both. The real gut punch was the lack of relief on the $284 bill - a little less than half of which was for a steak that I'll have to finish cooking myself. Honestly I think they should have charged me half for the tomahawk, or given me a gift card to encourage me to return. I would not recommend this place for steak, but for bacon, they do a great job. I will likely not be returning. Side note: the bread brought to the table was cold and a little stale. Butter on the plate was 4 individual pads that someone had unwrapped from what I assume was land o lakes, but could have been any generic individually wrapped butter. I'll post pictures of the inside of the 2nd raw steak when I get home tonight. I think Augie's will get my business next time I want someone else to cook my steak. Some random dude came to our table to collect the bill and mentioned that we must pay 20% tip. Hold up wait Nothing specified that we had to pay 20% so now we're confused. I'm asking for the original waiter and he doesn't come back to the table. So we're like what the heck is going on here. The crazy part is this guy was ready to argue about the 20% and we didn't even see him the whole time we was there. Like where the hell did you come from. Having been here the first time since opening, this place has a friendly, welcoming, and professional vibe. Despite there being a minor mix up with our side orders, there was no complaint here as they cordially corrected the order, and rapidly with apologies. Because I was among 4 of us, two of which are "food critics" wherever we go, one complained that his steak was too fatty. The other complained that his Martini wasn't cold enough! Drink was voluntarily replaced and acceptable. Food was presented nice. Service is very attentive. Served from a food cart. Crumbs are scarped off of the linens in between courses. We opted to sit on their outdoor patio since it was a nice night. *1/2 dozen oysters ($14.95) - east coast, shucked well and fresh! * Tomahawk for 2 ($110) - the quality of meat was definitely up to par, but lacked the flavor. Wasn't bad, but not amazing either * Creamed Spinach & Mash Potatoes ($10.95 each) - my two favorite side staples and they didn't disappoint! * Creme Brûlée ($12) - so yummy! I could eat so many of these. The top was perfect! The customer service and hospitality was great, there were plenty of servers around and they worked as a team to take care of us. We were looking for a nice place to celebrate a late Valentine's Day dinner and decided on this steakhouse. I made reservations on open table very easily and we were promptly seated upon arrival. We had a really nice table off to the side. Everyone was spaced out and all employees were masked up. They cleaned tables throughout the night very thoroughly. The menu is not extensive (personally I like this a lot) and it has so many things that we liked! They also offered several specials! If you like wine, this is your place. They have an amazing menu of bottles as well as a nice list of by the glass options. I had two glasses of Pinot noir which were very tasty (and they are generous pourers here too). The cocktail list looked intriguing but I really wanted wine so next time I'll get one of those. We ended up going for the bacon app and Buffalo mozz salad. Both were delicious! The bacon was perfect! Crispy on outside and soft on inside! For our entrees I had the filet mignon and my husband had the ribeye. We shared onion rings and spinach. We also asked for a side of this port wine reduction which was a really great compliment to the perfectly cooked steaks. For dessert we each ordered something amazing and I had a cappuccino. Overall the night was a great success. There was a longer than normal lag time between when we were done eating the meal and when they came to clear the table and ask about dessert but it wasn't too bad. They were very busy. One thing I would suggest would be to bring out the steak knives either before or with the meals as they are delivered so we can eat right away. Ok. So enough visits to have experienced it all. Menu changes, staff changes, kitchen staff,bwait staff... as most young restaurants experience. Change always to respond to their customer's feedback. Sort of like a restaurant fiduciary... One thing that has reigned supreme is the care and commitment of the owners and managers to do everything in their power to make your visit enjoyable. Elvis and Klevis run day to day operations and chef Timmy provides the good stuff from the kitchen. The bar menu can satisfy any appetite at happy hour prices - while the dry aged steaks and off the menu specials (ask) showcase the chef's true talent. All with a personal greeting, a smile, and sincere care for your experience. Our food favs include the "filet trio", the tuna "Timmy Special" and the OMG Porterhouse. Throw in roasted broccoli or a potato a la Elvis... wow! The ambience, inside or out on the patio is designed to delight and relax.
