We had never been to Hugger Mugger Brewing until their anniversary party/renaissance festival this year. It was amazing! I was super impressed by everything about the brewery and so wish it was closer to me so we could hang out there all the time. The place was absolutely beautiful. I loved their wooden beer signs and their outdoor tables. The space was huge and a great place for fun events. I loved their telephone booth selfie booth! They had food trucks on site and a great outdoor space. I really loved seeing so many dogs there! The event itself was absolutely incredible!! It was so cool seeing people dressed in full armor! I loved seeing the birds too. There were people dressed in costume who sent us on a bit of a scavenger hunt. We so enjoyed meeting the different costumed actors and being sent around to look for specific characters! A lot of thought and planning went into this event and we so appreciate the experience. Their beers were AMAZING!! We tried three different beers and loved them all. My favorite was the Spice Ghouls. I don't think you can go wrong with any of their beers. All of the staff members we interacted with were super nice. They were all working so hard to make the beer lines move fast. I love the cups!They had people pay $1 for the cup and then use it for each beer. I love that because it cut back on waste! I'm looking forward to next year. We wandered into Hugger Mugger Brewing Company at 229 Wicker St., Sanford after a few antique shop visits, not quite knowing what to expect. The local warmth in this place overfloweth. Our amazing bartnder, an antique junkie herself, was super cool. She talked us through the beers on tap, shared what the regulars loved most, and without hesitating, poured us tastes so we could discover our own favorites. Love HM!! Being from MPLS we are used to a lot of breweries. HM is a vibe! It's really big inside with a decent size outdoor area. Even if it's busy it isn't crowded. They have a lot of nice food trucks or you can bring in your own food which is nice. I've hosted a few meet ups here and HM is always a good time! I appreciate that they have sour beers which a lot of breweries don't carry sours. By far my favorite! read more

Wow! So cute and great brews. Big space with original artwork and big seating areas with traditional and modern touches. Beer: I especially enjoyed the Loop'U-Lanatic and Juicy Brand Recognition IPA. The staff is very welcoming and we had fun playing games from their big collection. Fact or Crap was fun! Moe's BBQ was on site and ordered pork BBQ sandwich with coleslaw and chips. Hugger Mugger is a great space with outdoor, dog-friendly seating and picnic tables. Drinks are at the bar, many people bring or play board games that are available. Live music and events are frequently available on their social calendar and food trucks are on site most evenings. The scene is edgy, louder, and has dim lighting with front and rear entrances. Lots of parking available in a public lot out back (stairs accessible or sidewalk around to through the back entrance if needed). Street parking is also available. I am so appreciative of this place. The fast food scene in Sanford is like the usual suspects or a few great places that close at 7pm. We haven't even finished arguing about what to eat by 7pm. So I love that most days they have food trucks and usually they are there and serving food until 8:30pm. They also have a bunch of fun activities in the community and live music. Hugger Mugger was...interesting. It's in the middle of downtown Sanford amid some little shops. In a few years it could be more lively in the area if they can revitalize it. You walk inside and say, "wow." The space was not what I was expecting. It's gigantic with mustard yellow walls and some...eclectic...black and white artwork on the walls, in addition to the old checkered floor tiles. Apparently it used to be an old pool hall. It sorta smelled like one. It really just felt like the place was having an identity crisis. There was nothing cohesive about it. The beer I got was strange as well. I think it was some sort of strawberry wheat ale, perhaps? After a few sips I got a stomach ache and didn't touch it anymore. There was a food truck out back where there were picnic tables. This is me being picky, but they could do well to get rid of the concrete tables and benches outside. I scraped my legs in a few places and bled. read more

We made the trip out to Sanford to check out Hugger Mugger Brewing. The brewery is in a great location, the space is huge and they have a great selection (17 beers on tap when we visited). We started off with a few flights, which includes four 5 ounce pours for $6. Most of the beers that we tried were good; however, none stood out to me. My favorite was the Juicy Brand Recognition Nor'Eastern IPA. I typically do not leave a beer behind but I did not like the Small Bang Primal Blonde Ale at all. This place is massive! Holy cow... seriously massive! The bar is huge, so a lot of people can be waited on at one time! There is a 2nd bar in the back thst i assume would be for weekends. Bottom line, there are nicer and more appropriate places to have a cold beer in Sanford. 1) If you're looking for Sanford's version of 'Chuck E. Cheese' then this is it. The back area may as well have been a nursery based on the number of kids back there. 2) Sound deadening material. Really...look into it, management. I literally wished I had had my earplugs because the decibel level in there was off of the charts. 3) We grabbed a table, which was dirty. I asked if someone could wipe it off and the bartender literally brought me a rag and spray. Unbelievable. read more

Wow wow wow. I can't believe this place is in Sanford! It could easily fit in New York City. LA. Or any major city. I was completely mesmerized by this place. Located in what appears to be a historic storefront building from back in the day. Mojo for day's with antique black and white checked floor, yellow walls, and painted tin ceiling. Parking is kind of at a premium due to location, but I found a spot easy enough. Now for the beer. That's why we are here. Close to 20 taps flowing some tasty and unique brews. Something for everybody with their Thunder sticks alt stick beer being a standout to me. Classic old school flavor and super malty. Their Belgian quad will get you where you need to go quicker than the Tardis. Interesting tapestry artwork lines the walls and cool music set the vibe. I wish I had more time to spend here. With the Tardis I guess i have all the time I want. The service was excellent all the way around, getting me what I needed with no problems at all. Don't miss this place on your travels. read more

Great place to grab a beer while your wife walks around antique shopping. There are so many beers, which is good. But if you get the flight, you're going to be in good shape. We stopped here on our way through nc... It d worth it for the Beer, bartenders, and decor - - 5 stars for all that. Beers are sophisticated and well balanced. The name of the brewery and the entire vibe is very unique. The bartenders are equally unique (the tattooed bearded guy that waited on us looked like someone I'd hate to piss off but turned out to be hilarious and really nice) and they were incredibly hospitable. But The experience would have been much better if the owner/manager (short blonde hair lady) left patrons alone. A short couple minute conversation is fine but sitting at the bar for an hour and a half talking at an older couple isn't exactly polite. The lady was visibly upset/bored. Not a very perceptive or professional person. The bartenders are running around working their tails off and the owner /manager is just sitting at the bar not doing anything except socializing. Maybe keeping a bigger selection of normal non alcoholic beverages (mainstream soda?) would be a good idea. read more

This place is huge and plenty of space so you don't feel crowded at all. I ordered 2 beer flights (4 Five Ounce Beers of choice) and it was only $6. GREAT place... I grew up in Sanford, moved away, served with the Army and only come back to check on/visit Mom... Sanford has changed--this place is place is outstanding...20 craft style beers available on tap, a flight of samples only costs $6... I simply cannot say enough; wide variety of beer styles, each fresh and so tasty... staff is very knowledgeable, fun and informative technical "beer talk" was awesome... favorite brew today was the Northeast style IPA. For the non beer drinker they offer several special non alcoholic ciders, my daughter liked the pomegranate cider. A very family friendly place, even have a play space for youngest kids...No food on site but for several local food trucks which visit...interesting way to provide a food option...various local food trucks are reserved and on site each night, food fare varies accordingly...good concept. Good beer! Good space! Excellent service! Great overall experience! It takes a lot for me to give a 5-star review of a brewery. And this place earns it. I've been here a couple of times and aside from the lack of good parking, I have no complaints. The brewery itself is on a main street in "downtown" (i.e. the older part of) Sanford. Known more for bricks than beer, Lee County is likely an up-and-coming area since Chatham, Orange, Durham, Wake, Johnston, Harnett, and Moore Counties have are all taxing themselves to the point of running people off, not to mention the home prices are soaring there and they are cramming those overpriced houses everywhere, so putting a brewery in Sanford, only 45 minutes from the downtown areas of Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Durham, makes good economic sense for the long haul. Once you find a spot to park, make your way into the brewery and be prepared for a lot of open space. After speaking with the owner, I understand that some will be used for other brewing related purposes in the near future so all is not lost. The bar and entire sitting area is open and casual and plentiful. There is usually music which, honestly, can be a bit too loud and, people being people, the low hum of conversation quickly gets to a drone and then a roar with the added alcohol. Overall, very nice, though. Their brewhouse is tucked away at the back of the building but easily seen if you care to take a walk back there. And, in the not too distant future, there will be a Biergarten. The beers are the star, though, and they are excellent. I've had everything on their menu and all are well made. Their Mexi-Lager is quite good and, being a difficult style to make correctly, a testament to how well they can brew here. And they have something for pretty much every "level" of beer drinker with about 10+ beer taps, a couple of ciders on tap, and some sodas. Very easily the best beer in the area overall. Prices are in line if not cheaper than most in the area. A flight of 4 5-oz pours is $6. $6! For 20 oz of any of their beers! You can't beat that. If you're in the area passing through, looking at homes, or just on your way to Fayetteville or Fort Bragg, stop by and have a couple of beers. read more

Nice to see downtown Sanford growing! Hugger Mugger is a great addition and definitely being a community partner. The place is big inside. Kids are welcome which I don't have a problem with b/c I was there at one time. Some of the tables are really large, too large if you want to have a conversation without yelling. They offer live music on occasion. Met a group of friends to listen to a band. Forget it! Acoustics are AWFUL! It's hard to even listen to the band and enjoy. We ended up going outback b/c it's SO BAD. Forget this place as a music venue until they correct the problem. I loved that they have the option of sitting outside. I also like the beer choices and given the opportunity to sample the beer before choosing one I liked. Great place to meet up with friends and have a beer or grab something to eat from a food truck.
