We stopped in per a locals recommendation and glad we did. When you walk in it's an unassuming place but trust me it's amazing pizza, which is what counts! We had an app plus the house crust Hawaiian. It was the best pizza we've had in a long time and super glad we stopped in! Did not know that ordering a Hawaiian pizza meant that it would also come with a plethora of onions, green peppers and olives. I was disappointed to say the least, good thing I like those toppings, although, there was hardly any pineapple or ham and there was a LOT more of onion and black olives. It showed up right away but it was not the pizza I am used to, it was cold in places so it was sitting waiting to be served for some time. First of all, the pizza is terrific so don't let the 3 stars fool you. If it were based on pizza alone I'd give 4 stars no sweat. However, it was a bit lackluster in ordering other items off the menu, including the fish fry. I'm not sure how the one reviewer gave great marks for the fish, maybe they didn't have the Cod. I suppose the fish didn't taste bad, but the breading was not very good, nor was the potato that must have been in the oven for a few hours was any better. The ambiance of the dinning room was a bit dull, even though there's an amazing fireplace. The wait staff were really friendly, almost to the point of it being a distraction for them. (I was asking for some silverware when one of the two servers walked by because she needed to add in her portion to the conversation the other server was having with her table. An Ashland native told me I had to try a Reuben pizza, as odd as it sounded. I don't eat Reuben's, so I was hesitant to try it, especially on a pizza. Thank goodness I made the leap...Hugo's Reuben pizza is heaven on a crust, and I am the dork that uploaded a selfie with the pizza. I am from very out of town, and if you call ahead, you can order frozen pizzas or par-baked. They travel well, store well, and reheat well. The Reuben pizza is not cheap, but they also offer frozen pizzas with typical pizza toppings for under $10. They also have a pizza buffet, which I will be trying the next time I am in town. read more

The table was dirty and the waitress threw the forks on the bare table no napkins . We had to ask for butter knives . That's when we should have left but we didn't. My husband was served cold lasagna his bread tasted like old refrigerator. I had the fish fry and it was served with no tarter sauce. I had to ask for it . The fish wasn't very good but edible. Someday, I'll have to try the pizza here. So far, I've been here twice for their Friday night fish fry. The fish fry comes with an open salad bar; the salad bar, however, is pretty slim in pickings, but no matter. The fish and baked potato are great! The fish has been perfectly cooked, and the baked potato is large and comes with butter and sour cream. The first location of the Hugo's Family! Growing, up this is really the only place we would go out for pizza at. The place is pretty good! Also, in Ashland there really aren't too many places to go get a good pizza at.. I mean you have other options, but really they are all the same. I've always thought of this place as a family place. For many years, we would meet my grandparents here for dinner.. It wasn't a regular thing, but we would do this once a month at least, and it was fun. The food here is decent. The pizza can be kinda greasy at times, but for the most part, it is pretty tasty. On busy nights, it would be a good idea to call in your pizza for pick up or eating it at the restaurant so they can start on it before you get there. It can take a while for pizza if it is busy. When I was in high school, I actually worked at the Hugo's in Washburn! The pizzas are all made my hand with good ingredients. The other food on the menu isn't really that fantastic.. It isn't bad.. but it is OK. I would recommend sticking to the pizzas! read more

We walked in here and thought we were in a cave. The dark wood paneling from 1972 is still there. It wasn't particularly busy, but the people at the tables had no food and were looking anxious. We didn't realize what this really meant until we sat down at our own table and proceeded to wait. Eventually a lady came out and took our order and we were hopeful. But that hopefulness was soon dashed when we began to recognize the slowwwww pattern emerging before us. All these hungry people sitting around at tables with no food on them were all waiting for their pizzas, and we were in line, so to speak, behind them. We watched as pizzas slowly came out, one by one, to the other tables. An hour later, we were desperately hungry and now we too had those anxious looks that we saw on everyone's faces when we first came in. The waitress came by with plates and silverware, and she looked at us and said "don't get excited, it's just plates." Thanks for the heads up lady. Worst service ever! It took over an hour to get our food, and this was after two of us went up to inquire. The kids had a kids meal of a hot dog and fries. This was the first to come out and it was barely warm. While the kids ate we waited for our two 14" pizza's, and waited, and waited. When we arrived, there was one big table and a small table of people--the restaurant was essentially empty. Hugo's also has take-out, but we assumed it would be quicker to dine-in, apparently not! We watched as others came in, one group waited so long to get menu's they got up and got them themselves. We ended up not eating in the restaurant and instead had to ask that the pizza's be boxed. My sister and her family were only in town for the day and were leaving after dinner, a dinner they never got. I asked to speak to the manager but was told he was to busy cooking and couldn't be bothered. The waitresses were unapologetic and actually made excuses for their incompetence and lack of hospitality. Ashland is small with limited choices for restaurants... luckily it has Frankie's Pizza and Pizza Pub. I wouldn't pay for another meal from Hugo's Pizza ever again, not even for take-out. Judging by the staff's unapologetic attitude, I don't think they care that they lost business. read more

They have quite the variety of non pizza items, menu on their website. They offer 3 types of fries, which I appreciate. I always hit Hugo's when I'm craving good fries or a club sandwich. Last visit was extremely disappointing. Really, really disappointing. If this would have been our first visit, it would have been the only visit. It was evident that the sever was new, and not well trained. The pizza was horrible and not anything like our past pizzas. Ordered a deep dish pizza, and it was more like a thick crust pizza gone wrong. It was soggy, like wet soggy. I travel for a living so I get to eat all over the country. I realize different localities have different preferences so I keep that in mind. However, some things are pretty constant and since I have had pizza in this part of the country, I can say most pizza places stick to the same basic rules. And to me, what makes a pizza good or stand out are two things. The crust and the sauce. I know you can have quality toppings but really, they vary little in taste. So I judge all pizza by the crust and the sauce. I tend to like a lot of sauce on my pizza. So when I saw the menu saying extra sauce at no cost, I had to ask for extra. Big mistake. As mentioned before, as a rule, pizza sauce should be thick. Thicker than spaghetti sauce or any marinara. It should stick to the crust. The sauce here is so watery, it reminds me of the sauce in Spaghetti-O's. The extra sauce just ran off the pizza. From what I could tell, the crust may have been very good. The edges were nice and flaky. But I wouldn't know. The watery sauce made the crust soggy. I actually had to eat it with a fork (gasp!). And the sauce was mediocre on flavor. Not as bad as Spaghetti-O sauce but not too far from it. I'm giving them 3 stars because I can't give 2.5 and also because the crust had potential if it wasn't so waterlogged. The other reason was the waitress. She was very sweet and attentive. Really too attentive but I'll take that over someone who never comes around. But for the owners: start with tomato paste and work from there. It seems you started with water and began to add tomato sauce. The ambiance of the restaurant is about as inviting as a hall at a retirement home set up to play bridge. No intimate booths, nothing homey. But yeah, the three stars are too high, 2.5 might be too high, but that's where it stands. read more

Usually my boyfriend and I order a pizza and share it, but after seeing the online menu they had to offer I was impressed not only by such a huge variety of choices, but also that delivery was available. Typically when getting delivery you have the traditional pizza, or Chinese food, but Hugo's offers meals that usually you need to dine in for to get. My boyfriend ordered a barbecue chicken pizza, and I got a taco salad. Both the pizza and the salad were excellent. The pizza was cooked just right with a good amount of toppings and cheese. And my taco salad was one of the best I've had, which is pretty good in my opinion as it is one of my favorite foods! Quick delivery, and friendly service. I have been going here since it opened in the 70's. The taco pizza is and always has been a family favorite. If there is one thing I would advise besides trying the taco pizza is to preorder it at least one hour before arriving. That way you avoid the long cooking time unless of course you don't mind drinking a pitcher of beer while you wait. read more

Hugo's has good pizza. More importantly to me, Hugo's has gluten free pizza. And it is tasty. When visiting the area we always hit up Hugo's. Friday fish fry is good too (and they offer broiled fish). They have a small but good salad bar. Service can be slow but pizza can take time to bake when a restaurant is busy. read more

While in town for the weekend, we were looking for a new restaurant to try, after searching online, we opted to try Hugos. They had a chicken dinner special that sounded great, grilled chicken breast, baked potato and salad bar. My husband and I both decided to get it, but also decided to try their pizza, since that's what they're known for. We each had a ate from the salad bar and it was great! Our chicken dinner soon came, along with our pizza-the chicken dinner was unfortunately awful-the chicken was tough and chewy (mine was half the size of my husband's, too) and the baked potato was hard and dry. The pizza, however, was delicious! I'm glad we decided to order the pizza because we both didn't eat more than a bite of the chicken dinner. So-the pizza I would highly recommend but the chicken dinner I would stay away from.
