Not as "exciting" as I anticipated. I've eaten here several times because I get caught up in the hype, but have been disappointed each time. This last visit will be the last time I eat there. There was an odd rotten odor at the meat end of the buffet line. Tried to create a mountain of raw food in my little bowl, so I would end up with an adult sized portion of cooked food. Not very successful. Restaurant is pretty but could use a good cleaning/dusting. Service was okay. Hostess was very friendly. Cooks just did their cooking thing (ching, ching, clang), but that grill seems to burn everything onto itself - like a non-stick pan that is really old. Maybe oil on the grill would help? One of the best spots in the La Crosse/Onalaska area if you're looking to get a meal that works for a family but isn't the classic bar-n-grill meat-and-potatoes fare. We were six days deep in a road trip and just getting tired of fried, starchy, or protein-heavy. But, after a car with kids all day, you still really really want a beer. The gimmick is as they say in all the reviews and the website -- you load a modest-sized bowl with your choice of meat, noodles, veggies, and sauce, then it gets stir-fried for you in maybe 5 minutes (I think a bit less) and then you eat it. If you want to, at dinner you can also have salad and soup brought to your table, though I have trouble imagining why you would. Kids get the same thing but for way discounted, 3 and under are free. There is also a kid's menu, but don't even bother, our ultra picky eater was able to customize something for herself well enough that she actually asked for seconds. We found it pretty reasonable in terms of service and speed. Did have to wait about 5min to get someone to come over and take a drinks order, but after that, it was simple. The sauces offer an excellent range of flavors. I like my food spicy, and I was able to get it to "I have to blow my nose" range just with the default options. If you are confused by the array of options, they conveniently provide menu suggestions. Honestly, the only flaw was that our server couldn't really tell us what the ones on tap were like. My family enjoys going to HuHot. We can all get what we want and be happy! We normally visit the Rochester Mn location, but I had to visit the Valley View Mall today. My daughter and I got there around 3:45 on a Saturday, so they weren't too busy. We were sat right away and the server was there immediately. They really can't screw up the food...you pick everything that gets cooked. I really like the set up of the food bars and grill compared to other HuHot locations that I've been to. It doesn't seem to be as crowded and flowed better. We noticed that even though so have bar items, there is no bar at this location. The only complaint I had about this location was the grill. I will state that my food was great. They cooked everything thoroughly. However, there was no sense of urgency to getting the items on to a plate. My daughters rice noodles ended up kind of dry (they were mixed with another kind). They seemed a little sloppy as a few items from each serving was on the floor instead of being put on the plate. Positive though is that we didn't get ingredients from other peoples food like we normally do. read more

Pleasantly surprised to find I could EASILY follow my new diet plan and eat my fill!!! The selection of protein and vegetables was wonderful, with some new items included. The Zucchini Noodles are an excellent substitute for the traditional noodles. The roasted corn and new sauce had me trying new combinations for once. The staff was welcoming, Tori was an attentive waitress and Joe did wonderful on the grill his first day alone. He did well focusing on the grill yet able to hold conversations with customers. Nice gimmick. For those that haven't looked up the website, you pick some frozen meats, veggies, sauces, and noodles and the "Grill Warriors" cook it up for you on a huge communal barbecue. Its pretty much the Mongolian Grill at any Americanized Chinese Food Buffet (that thing that most people shy away from because they don't want to talk to the chef). Here, at HuHot, they specialize in that version of stir-fry and don't have any other food options (besides a few appetizers and desserts that you can order for an additional cost), so you may want to stay clear if you're kinda shy, prefer a sit-down meal, or get angry at kids running around/dropping food everywhere. We had fun and enjoyed our meals. The food isn't spectacular. If it was served anywhere else, it'd probably get a lower score. However, the gimmick combined with a guaranteed warm Chinese Buffet style smorgasbord, with your desired level of spiciness, earns HuHot a solid "A-OK" ranking. Plus, if you hate your food, you only have yourself to blame for mixing up the concoction. Things that we'd like to see: Larger bowels. We understand why they have smaller ones (to reduce waste), but they're so small that its difficult to carry everything. If you just like noodles and meat, you'd be fine. However, if you like tons of veggies too, you'll end up dropping your food. The sign says, "One Bowl!" but I'll probably grab two (like other reviewers have suggested). HuHot needs some more finishing sauces. We loved the wasabi sauce and sriracha, but we'd like some Yum Yum Sauce too (that paprika and mayonnaise sauce you see at most Japanese Steak Houses). My favorite dish: Shrimp, Beef, Mushrooms, Onions, Green Peppers, Noodles, and Broccoli. Add ladles of soy sauce x2 and Kung Pao...Yow!® x4. We were told that someone would be with us shortly and 45 minutes later there was still no one helping us. Meanwhile, all the Caucasian customers that came after us were all helped! Of course, after complaining quite loudly someone finally came over to ask us if we needed anything! We of course left and never ate! Not once did anyone even apologize for making us wait 45 minutes! We have been to HuHot in Eau Claire and Rochester prior and it's been a family favorite. Today's visit was as part of the pre-opening event in La Crosse. As such the setting was slightly different with far more staff and fewer patrons than normal. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. The grill staff produced excellent stir fry without being over or under cooked. You could tell they were still a bit green (they don't open for another two days after all) but they made the experience thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless. The grill staff at Huhots is typically very entertaining and you could tell tonight they were focused on getting the job done. All in all we had a great time & food was as good as it always has been. HuHot was fun yet a little weird. I started by asking the server about the house white wine. Her response was that it came in a box. This is not helpful information. So I asked, is it a blend? If so , of what? Is it sweet, dry, what? The response was I could go check on the box in the back...I said never mind, just bring me a glass of Chardonnay. We were never here before so the waitress very pleasantly went through the rundown of how it works. She did all this while holding my menu under her nose, kinda rubbing her face on it. That was a little turn off. The server mentioned that you choose your meats, then top them with all the veggies you want followed by the sauces. Even though the thought of piling veggies over raw meat sounded a little gross, once I got to the items to choose from, I discovered that the meats were frozen which removed some of my dismay. Unfortunately, some of the vegetables were also frozen, not fresh which was disappointing. The fun thing was that if you didn't like the final results, you could do it again since it was all you can eat. The instructions stated to fill one bowl only, however all the regulars started with two. So feel free to put the meats in one bowl and the veggies in another since no one in management seem to care. The barbecue part was fun to watch. You take your bowl to the grill then they toss them on and start the stir fry process. The cook was amazing. He was friendly and fun to watch. Once it was fully cooked, you were handed your dinner on a fresh plate. It was a little daunting carrying my own dinner to my table since the place was full kids ready to cut you off while you were walking by. Yes, it is kid friendly which means you get to watch them pick through the raw veggies and meats, sometimes with their fingers. Another thing to make me go eww. As for the restaurant, it was clean and fresh looking. If it weren't for all the little kids, it might have been a relaxing place. The wait staff left much to be desired. We got our wine delivered promptly, our rice bowl delivered promptly and she did stop by to see how we were doing. After that, she never came back. I would have loved to get another glass of wine or even a glass of water but we could not get her attention or anyone else's. I like that you can create your own stir fry here. They have a variety of meats, seafood, veggies and sauces to create your own special dish. Each time you can make something different. But the only thing that set me off about this place was just how dirty the section was with all the sauces. As people put the sauce in their bowls some of the stuff falls out or you spill the sauce so I would expect the employees to keep it clean but that didn't happen the entire time we were there. We took long-lost family members to this location as a special dining experience for them. The decor is fun: the server was friendly and attentive. There was a steady stream of diners, but it wasn't super-busy, so waiting time at the grills was minimal. The reason I took away one star was the pricing. It's $8.99 for lunch, and $12.99 for dinner. We went at dinner time. The increased price would have been worth it if the promised enhanced food selection had actually been offered, but it wasn't. The little cards telling us what was in each cold bin assured us that calamari and scallops were available. They were not. Instead, those bins held sliced sausage. I waited for 5 minutes before someone came out to tend to the food and when I asked for the beef and noodles they got an attitude. It took several more minutes before they brought the food out and the employee still had an attitude. She slammed some of the food containers around and had a look on her face that could kill. You get to load up a bowl with all the meats, veggies and crazy sauces they have there and then watch them dump it onto this big round grill where a bunch of guys chop and stir fry it. Then give it back to you and you sow down. Don't like what you made? It's your fault so go make another bowl.
