And their brown rice in spam and kimchi fried rice to me is really good. Also I was able to swap their rice and green salad in their healthy menu with just steamed veggies. The chicken wasn't anything spectacular and I wish it was a bit more flavorful. The spam was pretty standard, but the katsu was the winner by a long shot. I've been coming here for YEARS. I always get the same thing. Kahlua Pork with CABBAGE. Over the years my daughter went from a mini plate to a regular size all on her own. I tried the Half and Half Mix Plate, with Kalua Pork and Short Ribs, no rice or mac salad, add steam veggies with a Fountain drink for a total of 25.50. They charge 3.25 for short ribs, as some type of upgrade (the price is on the board, but still surprising) Then 2.50 for side steamed veggie. I thought since no rice and no Mac, the veggies would not be considered a side and free. I think they offer cabbage only for free, but sure. As for the food, the kalua pork was really good, salty and smoky, mix with cabbage. The short ribs were good too, nothing special, but this time not as fatty as last time. Came here on a Friday to take out some food. Was craving kalua pig but noticed they did a mix plate. I ended up getting a mixed plate of kalua pig and broccoli beef. The plate also came with a drink and an egg roll which I did not know. I have to preface that I grew up eating really good kalua pig in Hawaii so I wasn't satisfied with this one. It was a little too dry for my liking. The broccoli beef on the other hand was delicious. Broccoli was crisp still, I hate when it gets over cooked so was really happy about that..The egg roll too was good. Mac salad was okay. I definitely plan to come here again to try their other items. I've been coming to Hula Wok since it opened many years ago. At first, the offerings were only typical "Hawaiian" - terriyaki chicken, loco moco, lau lau pork, etc. But, over time, more and more Cantonese-style dishes were added - chow main, chow fun, etc. Now, while the original Hawaiian items are still available, there may be as many Cantonese dishes, each listed on a handwritten sign beneath the painted Hawaiian menu. I especially like the egg gravy prawns over rice flat noodles ($13.75) and the Singapore style stir fried rice flat noodles (also $13.75 - I know it's not really a Cantonese dish, but it might as well be). The prices are a little high for the Cantonese dishes, but the ones I've tried are pretty high quality and generous in quantity. My favorite "Hawaiian" dish is the Hawaiian BBQ chicken ($6.95 for a Mini, $9.35 for a Reg), and I often get the Loco Moco ($7.45 for MIni, $9.75 for Reg), which isn't special but sometimes you just need a dose of brown gravy, eggs and ground beef. Even though I only need a Mini for lunch, I usually get a Regular lunch and save half for another meal; much better deal. This place is my go to spot for Hawaiian food because they have Chinese food too. The menu can be overwhelming at times not to mention the extra items they have printed out and taped to the bottom of the giant menu. Just take a deep breath and don't mind the line behind you as one can suddenly form. I like the mixed Chinese/Hawaiian combo and you can clearly see they pack it real good. This combo comes out to about $18 because of the extra charge for the fried rice however it does come with a drink and I feel it's well worth it as I can never finish it. The bbq beef and bbq chicken especially felt very overcooked and therefore so dry; I really needed to extra sauce to eat them. The meat used to be more juicy in the past. Their chicken Katsu was still as good though - crunchy coating, tasty flavor and the Katsu sauce was perfect to go with it. While the food quality declined, ironically the price has gone up significantly (roundly by 50% over the past couple of years). The bbq was good, it tasted like your standard Hawaiian bbq spot, but the orange chicken was fire. It wasn't too saucy and not too dry, it had the perfect breading to sauce ratio. The sauce wasn't too sweet for the chicken and it was a near perfect balance of sweetness and savoriness. Perfect for eating with rice. Pretty good food... a little concerned about the "Conditional Pass" sign from the state health department though. (gotta work on that hand washing and food temperature, guys!) I ordered the Chinese/Hawaiian special with BBQ beef, shrimp in lobster sauce and chow mein. The beef was a little overcooked, but seasoned well. The shrimp in lobster sauce didn't look appealing (lobster sauce is admittedly not the most attractive thing to slather on anything you plan to eat... but it sure is tasty!), but fortunately it tasted exponentially much better than it looked. The egg roll was a little softer than I expected, but that's likely because it sat for so long in the container with the rest of the hot food (which is totally my fault). It wasn't really flavorful though. I took one bite and tossed it. As I picked up my order, the lady at the counter gave me attitude because I picked up my lunch 45 minutes after I placed the order (well... that's what happens when meetings run long. Ate here for lunch recently. I ordered their Kalua Pork and Lau Lau combo online. The Kalua Pork was good, but a little too salty for my taste. Having the two scoops of rice and one scoop of macaroni salad helped tone down that salt. The pork was cooked nicely and was tender. The Lau Lau was okay. The pork was fatty and a bit overcooked. It paired well with the Kalua Pork. I loved the taro leaves. They were sautéed really well. I felt that the fish was a bit overcooked. The salt from the Kalua Pork helped the Lau Lau bring out its porky flavor. Not too bad. Overall, the service was excellent. I got my order very quickly. The staff were friendly and helpful upon arrival. I would like to stop by here again someday the next time I'm in San Ramon. read more

Solid four stars for Hula Wok. Anywhere I can get a yummy mini burger loco moco with rice for less than $7 is great to me. The rice was cooked just the way I like it. Warm, steamed and not dry at all. The gravy was soooo good that I could eat rice and gravy alone and be very happy. The mini also came with a small scoop of mac salad. Delicious and creamy! We also got a few spam musubi because you simply can't go to a Hawaiian place and NOT get musubi! The restaurant is clean, simple and all you need for a casual meal. The service was prompt, friendly and very professional. There was a line that formed after we sat down and started eating here on a weeknight, but the service was fast enough that people weren't standing in line for very long. Updated review: this is for a take-out order. DH ordered the food online, and I picked it up. Food was ready extremely quickly and the order was exactly right. Most of the dishes we ordered came with Mac salad and rice. We ended up with a lot of rice, LOL! One of the best dishes that we ordered was egg gravy prawn over rice noodles $11.95. It was very slick, as suggested by the name in Chinese, and had really nice savory flavor, plenty of gravy. It did not have as much "wok hei" (fried wok energy) as some other places. It was still good and we would get it again. Prawns were decent size. I ordered a barbecue chicken plate. The chicken is nicely seasoned, with a Hawaiian style marinade that is lightly soy-based and lightly sweetened. I can see why this is one of their most popular dishes. Kalua pork was a little too peppery for my liking. Also this time they did not make it with cabbage. I would say that this dish is about average. DH wanted to try something new and got chicken Katsu. It seemed fairly authentic with a light crispy Panko based breading. It came with katsu sauce but this was slightly runny. I think this dish would be much better eating directly in the restaurant where it would be nice and fresh. DH also tried the beef short ribs. This is probably our least favorite item in our order today. The short ribs were kind of chewy and tough, the seasoning was the same as the chicken. They're edible, but DH said he would not order them again. We wanted a healthier option, so we got the tofu and vegetable stirfry. This did not look very impressive in the box. However it was quite tasty. The vegetables are very normal vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and carrot. Everything cost about $53, which is an great value for the sheer quantity of food. wait, did this place have 4.5 stars on Yelp like a few weeks ago? i mean i ordered from this place on a few friday nights ago where there were many customers waiting, but tonight there was no wait, and the food tasted bland. Salt and Pepper tofu tasted like plain ol' tofu. I had to put more seasons on it. I did remember a few Friday nights ago enjoying their Salt and Pepper fried chicken, Beef Chow Fun with eggs and beef short ribs. However today was bland and a bit over cooked and dry.
