The food here is not much better than many other burger places, and costs twice as much! The soft serve tastes like its fat free :( The service was nothing to brag about. They weren't rude, but they weren't friendly either. I wont be returning. In my last review, I recommended a great place to eat in Escalon. The owner of "Hulas" said I am simply advertising for another local business. That was not my intention, so I have deleted that comment. I think the owner needs to not get so upset over reviews, and try to use them to better his business. He seems to make snarly comments whenever he gets a low rating. Stopped here on the way to Yosemite. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger. The bun was cold and un-toasted. The bacon was overly greasy and there was way too much of it. The square patty looked like it had been removed from the freezer and microwaved. The cheese wasn't even slightly melted. On top of that, I'm pretty sure the food here made me sick. Advertising really does work! We decided to stop at Hula's after we saw their signboard for the "best burgers & shakes" on our way back from Mono Lake. Always on the lookout for obscure burger shacks that serve peanut butter milkshakes (my particular addiction), we pulled in to check it out. Not much ambiance, but they had a shady outside eating area, complete with a fountain (and the road noise of Hwy 120). After ordering at the window, we settled down to pass the time. I was surprised soon after when the order taker brought us our shakes. Table service at a burger joint? The shakes were delightful, both my peanut butter and his butterscotch (though we do wish they offered a small milkshake in addition to their medium (16 oz. I think) and large (?? oz.).) Later, the order taker brought us out our burgers. I had chosen the Cowboy (BBQ sauce, bacon & onion ring on top) with a side salad and my husband got the French burger (blue cheese & BBQ sauce) with fries. I enjoyed my hamburger greatly (only complaint might be that the pickle slices seemed a little intense) and my husband liked his as well. I'm assuming his fries were good since he ate them all. However, what most impressed me and inspired me to write this review was my green side salad. It was beautiful and I regret not taking a picture of it. It looked genuinely handmade, like someone had torn a bunch of green leaf lettuce, chopped a fresh tomato and grated a real carrot. It was accompanied by a little container of blue cheese salad dressing (not corn syrup-y chain blue cheese either). I was shocked by the quality of this salad and though I was already struggling to finish burger & shake, I set them aside to prioritize those leafy greens. terrible service, i grew up in escalon always hearing how amazing hulas is but i have to say horrible service there. i had to ask multiple times; i even went up in the kitchen just to get my bill and it wasn't even busy. make sure to check the sauce's on the table our ketchup was expired and the lady didn't bother to get a new one for us. i'm so disappointed in the way i was served. i used to love this place but these past couple times i've gone the service has been bad. read more

It's a cute little restaurant with local memorabilia and a very large fenced off outside patio. You can call in your order and I was very surprised to find they also have a drive through. Hula's is definitely a little pricey for a burger joint but the food is decent. One time I had a burger here it tasted like fresh ground beef, the other times they were clearly Sysco frozen patties. I am not sure if it depends on which size burger you order or if they just happened to use fresh ground beef the one time. Fresh is way better. Service can be slow here but they have always been nice to me. Regulars get better treatment as I witnessed a regular order long after me but get served much sooner. If you are in or passing through Escalon there aren't many options for old drive in style burgers. Hula's will satisfy your craving but set you back a bit financially. read more

I'm only giving one star because there is not a choice of zero! I had order dinner here tonight and when I arrived to pick up my order I was not greeted with anything other then a frown. Their customer service was terrible. While I was inside I looked around and noticed how dirty it was inside and needs to be cleaned. Finally when I got someone to help me I received my food and my tiny medium drinks. Paid what I think I was way over priced but didn't complain. When I got home and opened my boxes my bun to my burger was so soggy and my fries were stale. My mom got a stake sandwich and when she went to take a bite it wouldn't even come apart it was like rubber. This place use to be a good place to go but I will not be returning anytime soon. If you haven't been here stay clear of it there are tons of other gems in our little town try one of them. read more

Hula's has all the potential to be a first class burger joint, however it failed to impress me. We stopped by on our drive up to Yosemite. I was impressed by the menu as there seemed to be a good selection of burgers. I ended up ordering the Escalon burger (cheddar cheese with grilled onions and mushrooms). Although it sounded like a tasty choice it really didn't have much flavor. The patty was thick but almost seemed like there was some filler--sorta fatty. The added, cheese, onions and mushrooms also did not add any flavor. The side salad that I ordered was the shredded lettuce that they use to top the burger with and was pretty boring. The shake seemed like blended soft serve. With each bite I was wishing we had just stopped off at In N Out. Despite the "ok" experience, I will comment that the waitress was friendly. Would only recommend this place if you are driving through the area and need somewhere to dine, otherwise, hold out for a better option. read more

You guys used to have such lovely people who took care of the customers but tonight was another level of rude and unprofessional and it's now happened too many times that you will now lose business forever from this family which is heartbreaking because we love hulas. As soon as the girl answered the phone, her name is Tara to be exact she told me in quite possible the rudest tone of voice "my kitchen is closing you need to pick this up in 10 minutes" well seeing how the business closes at 9:00 pm I'm confused. So I tell her that's fine we will be there and she said "what can I get you" in another rude tone I ordered the kids cheeseburger with fries" she says "huh what do you want" and I said it again and told her I wanted a chocolate shake and she about a rips my head off telling me I couldnt get the shake with the meal. Really? Because for the last 5 years of coming here that's never been an issue. I will pay the extra like I usually do not worried about it. After her rudeness and attitude I said forget it cancel the order then ask for her name because the way she was talking to me was horrific. She was on speaker and even my husbands eyes were the size of saucers listening to the way she was talking to me. Not cool hulas ! This place is what you would expect it to be - a burger join on the way to and from Yosemite in Escalon. I mean think about it... It has a great selection of burgers. Different burgers for all types of moods and cravings. I got the Bacon Cheeseburger. It hit the spot. It wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but it was big, had bacon, cheese, and filled a void. It came with sweet potato fries, which were descent, but slightly soggy. There was no choice in the type of cook for the burger, but again I wasn't surprised. I take it as Escalon chef's choice. I admit I was reluctant to stop--Hula's is in a strip mall in a small town en route to bigger cities. Would they have disappointing and bland food due to the limited competition? My fears were unfounded. Lo and behold, this is a fantastic place to stop! Gigantic juicy burgers (I got the guacamole and chiles and DH got pineapple burger), the best POG (passionfruit, orange, and guava juice), garlic fries (woohoo, super garlicky!), beer battered onion rings and 805 beer on tap! Our kids got quesadillas and a hot dog. Plus there's an outdoor patio so we didn't have to take turns eating since we bring our 80 pound dog on road trips with us. Hula's is a love poem forever written on the side of Highway 120. Everytime I come to Hula's, which isn't very often. The staff greet me by name as if I come in every single day. The milkshakes here are nothing short of godsends that bless my tastebuds and give me an insurmountable joy the likes of which I couldn't begin to describe I've had the burger, the salad, and the breakfast and have yet to have anything but a delicious meal from this place. We were really hungry after a day hike Yosemite. We stopped at Oakdale hoping for some good BBQ. We went to two places highly recommend by yelpsters, but neither were open on Sunday :-( Anyway, we gave up and start driving. We ran into Hula and decided to stop by. We were pleasantly surprised. For those who is looking for something spicy, this reapply hit the spot. Also, the quacamole burger and escalon burgers were pretty good too. The meat, vegetable ,... Are all very fresh. The burger came with fried sweet potato, fries or onion rings. We had fried sweet potato and onion rings. They are all very tasty and fresh as well. The banana malted shake was very delicious as well. We can taste the banana and all the fresh ingredients in it. As matter of facts, there smoothies and shakes all sounded very good. The meal even come with ice cream. We ended up eating way too much. Probably the thing we like the least was the burger bun because it was too soft; toward end of eating it, it gets soggy. If your looking for a good place to eat, keep on driving. As we entered the building, we stood in the entry way confused. I then noticed that there were 2 menus placed on each empty table, so we seated ourselves. We promptly ordered two waters and looked over then menu. Such a wide choice of burgers and beer battered onion rings sounded good. Our order was taken in a timely fashion and then we sat for quite a while waiting on the food. I am expecting a really good burger. Finally the food arrived. My Escalon burger came with fresh toppings and sauteed mushroom and onion. The first few bites I didn't get any meat. That was the best part of the meal. The salt and pepper seemed to be swapped in the shakers as the salt poured out quickly onto my onion rings and the pepper could barely escape its confinement. They provided some ranc my burger and it was dry, like a nasty pre pressed patty that I wouldn't feed to my dog (if I had one). The onion rings were ok, but they tasted like they came from a bag as when folded they didn't crack as they were just not crisp enough. The fries were dark as though the fryer oil needed to be changed. We didn't finish our food. We didn't take the special free ice cream for fear that it would be equally bad.
