You offer vaccine appointments... but they only exist as clinics that rotate to various locations, rather than having a dedicated location to provide such services outside of a clinic. You then ask us to create an account and fill out personal and pet info for this vaccine clinic. Then we have to make an appointment and wait for someone on your staff to manually update the appointment and approve us, to then only send out an email that talks about all of the clinics happening....NOT related to our appointment and share all the other locations NOT related to our appointment. Then we find out that our appointment that YOU approved is not even an appointment at all, and it's a First Come, First Served run of show where you then state we should expect to wait 60-90 minutes to get some shots. I'm a huge animal advocate, but your approach to handling this is completely stupid and a waste of our time. Here's a crazy idea... how about you offer those clinics to those who want to show up and stand in line with their pets for 60-90 minutes, and maybe also have a dedicated location for those who book actual appointments to get vaccines. read more

In March 2025, I brought a stray Australian Shepherd, whom I named Joni, to Humane Colorado after she was abandoned in my neighborhood. She had been tethered outside for several nights with no shelter or adequate food. The night after I brought her in, there was a frost and temperatures dropped below freezing. I truly believed I was doing the right thing to protect her. Joni was about two years old, bright, affectionate, and gentle. I spent hours with her in my yard. She knew basic commands, played sweetly, and greeted my mom, boyfriend, and neighbors with calm friendliness. She was clearly a good dog who had been let down. I took her to "Humane" Colorado thinking she'd have the best shot at adoption. She had no microchip, so I surrendered her--believing it meant she would be cared for and placed in a new home, I mean who wouldn't want her? She was absolutely gorgeous. At intake, I was told I couldn't leave my contact info for any potential owners that might claim her from lost and found to tell them how I found her. I was not given a copy of the "surrender agreement" that I was verbally read. I thought e**th was in the case of a something as extreme as a rabid or deadly dog, not a dog like Joni. I was told she'd be listed on the Lost & Found page for 3 days, then the Adoption page. She was, in fact, listed on the Lost & Found page--but she never made it to the Adoption page. I checked both pages multiple times a day. When I called to the shelter to follow up, I was told she had been put down 6 days after intake, following two behavioral evaluations. I went on-site to get more info on what happened. According to her intake transcript, she had barked and jumped at staff--a normal response for an anxious dog in a stressful environment. These actions were interpreted as behavioral red flags. The clerk I spoke to kept reiterating that "legally, we can't do anything with them for 5 days," as if that alone explained or justified the lack of tranparency and the rushed decision to be put down. When I questioned the outcome, a staff member said, "Yeah, but unfortunately, you guys did bring her to a shelter that is really big, we..." implying that space and capacity played a role in her fate. Joni was put down under the guise of "behavioral issues," when in truth, she was a victim of an overwhelmed shelter system. She needed time, decompression, and compassion--not judgment in a chaotic setting she didn't understand. I believed I was giving her the best chance. Instead, she was gone in less than a week. Humane Colorado must do better. Clearer communication with the public, transparency around e*th*nasia and behavior evaluations, and more humane intake practices are urgently needed. read more

The quality of service here is unmatched. Everyone who works here cares about the animals and making sure they find a good fit for their new homes. My boyfriend and I met with the dog we would end up adopting that same day. I love the rooms they have here to meet with the animals because one room is set up the way a kitchen or studio apartment would be so seeing the animals in that environment is helpful. They also have another room we visited that included a yard space as well which lets the animal's personality come out. Well we ended up meeting with a shy and nervous 6 year old Boxer and knew she would add to our lives and that we would add to hers. She has already come out of her shell so much and is settling into her new home. We've decided to call her Rhuby ( short for Rhubarb ). I hope that people looking to adopt can see that sometimes a dog that's shy in a shelter environment can be your best companion and have their personality shine once you bring them home and put them in a comfortable environment. I can't say enough nice things about the service here. We were able to bring home a portrait of our dog that volunteers made which was so sweet and a care kit prepared for by the facility. There was a hand made blanket in there and toys that our girl loves to play with and cuddle on (features in the photos) . I would recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a companion to add to their home. The techs are so thorough if a dog has certain needs that need to be considered. If I don't recommend this business, more animal lives will be lost, but their intake process is incredibly frustrating and inhumane. The fact that one person does one assessment of a traumatized animal determining if their lives are going to be ended or not is very concerning. There are multiple animals that were needlessly euthanized as a result of their intake process. I know of at least a dozen or so lives were needlessly ended. TLDR: I adopted a cat who was almost double the age they told me she was so I only got three years with her. I'm only doing this because I don't want anyone to go through what I went through, In 2018 I adopted a cat and was told she was 5 years old, and three years later the doctor told me she was actually 12, so she was 9 years old when I got her, almost double the age they told me she was. She ended up passing away shortly after from old age. I thought I was going to have a lot longer than three years with her and it was just an awful, traumatic experience. I'm happy she was able to settle down with a family that loved her dearly, but I just wish they were intelligent enough to be able to know how old their pets are. read more

When my husband and I were considering adopting another cat, we weren't entirely sure how we would go about it. Back in Indiana, we had both only had experience with barn cats and kittens in boxes labeled "FREE." For some ridiculous reason I got it into my head that I really wanted a little girl gray kitty. Looking at the Dumb Friends League website, I fell in love. When I first saw Luna, my heart simply melted. It's a little unfair how they photograph their animals so beautifully. I don't know how you could look at their website and NOT end up wanting to adopt at least one or two of the animals!!! Devious wench that I am, I kept leaving the computer open on her picture. My husband lasted less than week looking at that little face. Since she was down at the Castle Rock DDFL, we drove the 40 minutes or so down to meet her. There were so many adorable animals there I could hardly stand it. We got a private room to play with her and see if she would adopt us and I'm so glad she did! They were incredibly thorough in checking us out, they had to talk to the landlord and see all sorts of paperwork. We hadn't thought to come so prepared, so Todd drove back to Denver and then back again leaving me there to play with the kitty. (is he dreamy, or what?!) Staying there though was a huge mistake, seeing all the people coming in but not adopting had me crying on the steps on the outside by the time he returned. I remember blubbering something about starting a farm and adopting all the animals, but luckily he talked me off that ledge. The adoption went through without a hitch, and though we had to wait over the weekend to take her home and she was sick for the first two or three weeks after coming home, it's still one of the best decisions we've ever made. read more

Can't say enough good things about the Dumb Friends League. We adopted two pets over the course of a couple of month in late 2015. After many visits and meeting dozens of potential family members, we now have a wonderful reservation rescue dog named Pumpkin and a lazy fat (but loosing weight on his new "cat weight watchers plan" diet) orange tabby named Nermal. We looked for a very long time and went to multiple facilities and kept returning to the Dumb Friends League. I think they do a very good job of both caring for the animals as well as matching them with the right potential owners. They know each animal very well and are careful to assess the needs and capacity of each pet and potential adoptive family. They are careful to make sure that it's the best match possible. The animals at each facility seemed to be healthy and well cared for. Those that had recently been brought in and were not in good shape were not adoptable yet. We enjoyed watching as the staff work to give the animals every opportunity to reach the goal of making them into an adoptable pet both physically and socially. We saw many traumatized and sick animals transform into happy and healthy little creatures and delighted as their cards showed "adopted" and their little house areas empty the next time we stopped by. We were always greeted and treated with warmth and kindness from every member of the staff. They could not have been more patient as we returned week after week in search of the right forever member to add to our family. We have loved our two adopted family members for nearing a year now. We feel incredibly blessed we found the right fit for both our family as well as Pumpkin and Nermal. If you look at the picture collage I have posted, I think you will agree they seem to be enjoying life right now. I would strongly recommend that anyone who is considering getting a new pet, PLEASE adopt a rescued animal. There are AMAZING animals at so many shelters in need of good homes. I give this place 5 stars because of the work they do, finding homes for animals in need. I got my dog Larry here two years ago and he is the light of my life. However, I came in today to make a sizable donation of toys and treats and when I asked to pet and play with some homeless kitties I was told no. I understand it can cause stress but I wanted to play with a high energy kitten and maybe pet an older cat, show these animals some love and I was turned away, that was a little disappointing. This DDFL is leaps and bounds better than the one off Quebec. Not too busy, friendly staff and everyone was actually very helpful. After finding the cat that just went nuts after seeing us we decided to take a look at it and had someone bring it to us in one of the little waiting rooms. The volunteer was very nice and informative and gave us however much time we needed to spend with the kitty. We dropped off a wonderful dog that we found loose. Called the next day to check on her because we'd adopt her if no one claimed her given they had enough time to find her. Getting info from them was like pulling teeth. I offered to put up signs to let the owners know she was okay. They stated that she is not "in their care" and that's all they would say in regards to putting up signs to let owners know she was okay. I would have said you don't need to put up signs, but we can't say if she went up for adoption (which would be under the same number) or if her owners came, or if she went to the hospital, or if some one there took her home. That is ridiculous. But it sounded like she was good, and maybe her owners found her. I'd be mad if someone there took her home and didn't give them a chance. read more

I adopted my dog, Lola, from here after searching for months for a new pet. I had a less than stellar experience at the DDFL in Denver, but thankfully my experience here was completely different. I came in on a Sunday afternoon and saw Lola peering at me from behind the glass. She melted my black heart instantly! The adoption process went smoothly and quickly and I was immediately able to play with her. The staff were friendly and answered all of my questions. This is a smaller facility than the Quebec DFL but it's cleaner and doesn't have a huge smell when you walk in. They keep their dogs in separate compartments that are big enough for them to walk around in. They know their dogs well and the counselors interact with the dogs very well. If you go on weekends, there might be a wait to see the dog you want but it's well worth the wait. The dogs here are well taken care of, they are neutered/spayed, have microchip ID implanted to located the dog if it gets lost, has most of their shots, and if you adopt the dog, they will waive vet office visits so you only have to pay for the treatment. If it's your first time adopting a dog, make sure you have food bowl, water bowl, collar, lease, brush, pee cleaning tools, and some food ready for the dog's arrival. It's a good idea to have a towel in the car that the dog can lie on. DFL will provide you with a bag of food and treats the dog has been eating at the shelter to help with the transition to its new diet. It's normal the dog won't eat for a few days after arriving since it's nervous. There might be accidents even when it's previously house trained. The dog, Elvis, we adopted was awesome! He remained house trained and never barked. We couldn't have asked for a better mannered dog. I will definitely go back to DFL for any future dogs I want. read more

I can not say enough nice things about the DDFL. Two years ago this time my boyfriend and I started looking for a dog. We had just bought a house in Parker so we made stops at both locations often and I checked their website every day for puppies. I will say that we were a DDFL dream adoption family. My boyfriend and I own our house, have 6 foot fences, no kids, no other pets, we both have had dogs in the past and LOVE animals. I am sure this helped us with the kind of service we got because lets face it not everyone that comes in looking to adopt a pet should really get one. I have not always seen the staff at the DDFL on their best customer service day but to us they were always awesome. When we found our puppy (Banksy, the love of my life) we were through the roof. He was everything we wanted that we never knew we wanted. I was very impressed with the precautions they take when adopting. We had filled out our profile long before this day so they knew we were serious about taking the little guy home but they still were very clear that nothing was going forward until my boyfriend came to see the dog (duh! how could he not rush down to meet the little dude!?) and until they were sure we were sure. If you aren't familiar with what all you get when you adopt a dog at the DDFL let me tell you, if you are skip this bit. Banksy was about 8 weeks old and was already fixed by the last shelter he and his siblings came from. If he had come into the DDFL not fixed they would have done it. He was also given his first set of shots, dewormed and micro chipped. We were also given the choice to take him to one of the DDFLs supported vets for his first check up for free. I thought the list might be limited or the vets might be a little lower quality but it turns out the vet we wanted to use was on the list and the list was HUGE. A year and a half later I noticed something...strange. Banksy sometimes looked like he....well...had balls. I was worried that either the original shelter had missed them because at his young age they had not yet "dropped" and exploratory surgery is often skipped at shelters that are under funded. Or that there was something else there like the dreaded cancer. I called the DDFL to ask if they had any past medical history and everyone treated me like I had a serious legitimate concern. I was a little worried trying to explain that my fixed dog looked unfixed might make me look like a crazy parent. I was shuffled up to one of the top people at the DDFL who gave me all the history she had on my pup and then told me to get my butt down to the Buddy Center and get him checked out! They assured me that if he wasn't fixed for some reason they would do it that day. In the end it turns out my beast is just a beast and has some very large sex glands (dad is very proud). I was already a huge fan of the DDFL but I had no clue that they would go so out of their way to make sure a dog that had been out of their shelter for almost 2 years was still doing OK. I had assumed they would either tell me to go to my vet or at the very least charge me to look at him but they didn't. In fact when I left the vet made a point to thank us for adopting a shelter pet and I could tell she really meant it. A few notes to make about the DDFL: 1.) Yes you do pay for the animal. I think Banksy (as a puppy) was $350 but the value you get from them being fixed, given shots and micro chipped makes that more than worth it and the money you give helps off set the price of other animals who need a lot more care. Including lost pets who are well taken care of while they wait for their family here. 2.) Every year the DDFL has their Furry Scurry (May 5th this year) It is a great way to earn money, meet a bunch of other dogs and animal people and have a ton of fun while raising money for the DDFL. If you have a pet from the DDFL or just want to support a great organization I would suggest going. (If you want to make a donation I am taking them until the end of may send me a message and I will get you the link!) 3.) They have a pure breed list you can sign up for. I actually did this for a year looking for the perfect corgi to be Banksys sister. You tell them what breed you want, what gender or age and they will call you before the dog is released to the public for adoption. It is a great way to still get your pure breed dog with out adding to over popularization and at a huge discount! I received about 10 calls in a year with different corgis so don't think all shelter pets are mutts! 4.) If you or someone you know adopted a cute 8 week old puppy from the DDFL Buddy center around July of 2010 that might be Banksys brother (1) or sister (3) we would love to hear from you! The Buddy Center at Castle Rock is a satellite Animal Shelter connected to the Denver Dumbs Friends League (DDFL.org). The Buddy Center offers rescued and surrendered dogs, cats, and small animal pets for adoption. It is a non-profit shelter and operates off of donations and grants. While this Animal Shelter provides a very worthwhile community service, not all of their practices are top notch. For instance, they only use "treat training" and will not abide any suggestion to do otherwise. Because of the very strict spay and neuter laws in Colorado, puppies are at a premium and the Buddy Center takes a slight advantage of this by charging a premium adoption fee for puppies and young dogs. Besides this, the DDFL works with other rescue organizations to place pure bred dogs in so-called 'Breed Recuses' which then re-sell the animals at a higher fee. This practice is known as "creaming". Otherwise, this is a good place to find a pet. read more

We adopted 2 cats a little over a year ago from here, both were "mandatory behavior consults". Storm, who had been returned a few times, most recently for biting/scratching previous owner. And Jude, a kitten who was found out in a scrapyard in Salida or Sedelia. Both have been perfect additions to our family and get along great with each other and our mal. BEWARE!!! If your dog ever bites a person depending on the situation don't EVER bring them here or to ANY Dumb Friends League for the "10 day quarantine" because they will kill him in less than 24 hours!! Our dog had a bite incident (his first) at our home Tuesday evening. We were advised by a rescue that he needed to be quarantined for 10 days to show that we are doing everything we can in accordance to procedure. (Yes we knew at this point that we would need to put our family member down) No vet including ours will put an animal down without being quarantined. So we took him to the Buddy Center in Castle Rock (it was the nearest league to our home as we reside in Castle Rock) We take him in and the lady that was "helping" asked us what we were there for and we told her we were there for the 10 day quarantine. She started diddling on her computer. Printed out sheets and I asked her what was to be done next? She said that they HAVE to hold him for 10 day per Colorado Law for quarantine since he was a bit case, then a Vet would check his health then they would evaluate him to see if he was adoptable. Giving us hope that maybe they could find him a home where he wasn't so protective since he had bonded with us to an unhealthy level. She gave my husband a sheet to sign and told him it was an INTAKE form for the dog. Handed us another sheet and took our dog from us (which wasn't easy, lots of crying from me and lots whining and pulling away from her, not wanting to go.) Me and my husband had a long talk that night about they are probably just going to put him down after the 10 days cause he's bitten someone and they wouldn't be able to find someone to adopt him after biting so we wanted to pick him back up do the rest of the quarantine at our home (since we found out we could do that) and put him down with us so he wouldn't be afraid and we could be with him. I called the League the second they opened at 9am. First they couldn't even find him in their system under his name or my telephone number which was my first red flag. Then after them putting me on hold came back and told me that he was no longer at the facility. Again he wasn't even there for 24 hours yet and he magically is gone?? So I got super upset at that point asked to talk to the Director. He called me back and told me that there was nothing he could do and he couldn't and WOULDNT tell me if they put my dog down. He told me he was just "SO" sorry but he couldn't help me, all with me balling my eyes out telling him that they lied to me and they made me believe that he had a chance and we didn't get told that we no longer had rights to our OWN dog and their facility is supposed to be the hero's for our animals etc.. I called back again to maybe see if he was transported to another facility. He wasn't. Right then I knew they had killed him.. I called back again to get more information and a lady had me talk to the investigator that they had there. He then told me that they did in fact kill my dog and told me that they don't ever rehome dogs with a biting history. EVER! I told him that the practices that they take are wrong and they lied to me on multiple occasions from the very beginning. If we were told from the very start that there was no chance for our dog and that they were not going to hold him for 10 days I would have NEVER left him there. Ever.. He loved us and our kids loved him he was a part of our family and deserved MUCH more than what he was given at their facility. WE wanted to be the ones to put him down. WE wanted him to not be scared and alone with strangers taking his last breath, WE wanted to be able to comfort him and spend his last moments with him. We had him since he was 8 weeks old. He wasn't just A DOG.. He was a part of our family. Even on the papers they gave back to us they told us that we had the right to come back and get him, we also had the right to get his ashes. But yet they not once called us and told us that they were even putting him down.. they not once called us and asked us if we wanted his ashes. They did what they wanted to him and was just going to leave us wondering what happened to him. I hope this hits the new because my dog deserved so much more and I believe they lie and tell people what they want to hear instead of the TRUTH! People if you drop your dog off weather it's for adoption quarantine or cause you don't want them anymore. Whatever your case may be.. I bet most of them are no longer with us today.. They didn't even give my dog a chance.. Not even 24 hours.. I bet they killed him hours after we dropped him off. Then tried to tell us that they were "under the impression" that we didn't want him.
