You must be careful with their promise that they will pay for the original medical conditions of the animal you adopt. We adopted a 6 yr old cat with more than one condition (known conditions to the Buddy Center in Castle Rock). The vet (one from their approved list) could not treat or diagnose the multiple conditions all at once. By the time he got one cleared up (an eye infection) we were beyond the 2-week limit and Buddy Center would not help out with the expense of extracting the rotten teeth, which ran near to a thousand dollars. It took a lot of complaining (two surveys and three phone calls to them) before I had success getting the DFL to pay for the cats initial medical needs. BUT I did finally get a very apologetic and kind phone call from Duane who absolutely did agree that they should and would pay for the required medical treatments. Just unfortunate that not everyone (even those in supervisor positions) understands the DFL's own policies. read more

THe Dumb Friends League is awesome. Such important work they do. Son volunteered for a camp here and it was a great experience.

Just rescued our 2nd animal from the Buddy Center today since moving to Castle Rock, CO ... I can honestly say the people that run this Dumb Friends League are the nicest, and most helpful people you will ever find in an Animal Shelter! They set you up with everything you need to take care of, and learn about your new animal. Love this center and i highly recommend anyone looking for a new pet. Standing ovation for the Castle Rock DFL. As another reviewer mentioned, this location is superior to the Quebec location. We saw a fluffy white cat on their website, and had to go get him. Crisco is such a great cat. We wanted a new dog, and went over and found a super cool Papillion pup. I love my pets, but 3 dogs and 3 cats is plenty for my family. If I was to get another pet, the Castle Rock DFL would be my first stop. read more

We adopted our last cat here a couple of years ago. She was 8 months old at the time. The whole experience was very clinical and sterile. All the cats are kept in tiny, individual kennels. They don't get to socialize with one another or come out unless they're alone with people. I know they have this policy because they want to cut down on the communication of diseases between their animals, but cats need more socialization and exercise than they get here. Now that we've had our cat for a few years, she is struggling with obesity because she doesn't have much of a play drive. I think it's because of her time in a tiny box at this shelter. If I had it all to do again, I would have passed on adopting from DDFL and picked a different shelter where the animals get to roam more freely. read more

Having been to the Quebec street shelter a few times I was expecting this site to be much larger. The small operation of the buddy center makes for a better one on one experience with the animals and the ability to ask lots of questions. The staff were extremely helpful and were kind enough to give us our space with the dog we chose to adopt. Before meeting with our pooch we were given details about him and his past home life, twice. After playing for a good hour we decided to give Eddie, our spunky little corgi mix a new home. read more

This is a well run establishment, we went here looking to adopt a dog. It is spacious and very clean. We spent one on one time with a couple of dogs and were allowed as much time in the play room as we needed. The staff was friendly and caring to the animals. read more

We got our lab mix puppy here & the service was great. They asked us a lot of questions to make sure that we were a good fit for the dog. They also let us bring in our other dog to make sure they got along well together. We were able to take him home in a couple days after he was neutered. read more

I've adopted two great dogs from the Buddy Center since moving to Castle Rock. I was so moved by what they do for these animals that I eventually became a volunteer. This is a good operation with people who genuinely care about what they do. They need more support in the way of reliable volunteers, but the staff is top-notch. Volunteers talking behind privacy fence while we were bonding with our dog were ranting about how we weren't listening to them and how irresponsible we are (they knew nothing about us and hadn't even asked to talk to us!) and when I realized they were watching us and apparently wanted to talk I said just a minute cause I was helping my husband with our kids... And they went on being so rude and saying how irresponsible I was to not pay attention to them (but I WAS I just had to finish what I was doing)... Went to talk to them and they were really condescending saying I didn't know anything about dogs and shouldn't adopt the dog we were looking at... We did adopt the dog... Nothing they said about the dogs was true... Was great with our dog and our cat... I don't know if volunteers are just insecure and bored or really just trying to keep dogs out of loving homes like some shelters do unintentionally... But was a disappointing experience. Ended up adopting another dog from them - horribly matted with burrs way up in her armpits, etc - why don't they get these poor animals groomed?! She was surrendered and left in her horrible matted condition... Groomer was mortified. Be careful of some of the women volunteers - they literally try to convince people not to adopt dogs.... The man who helped us was wonderful though. Our application was approved with flying colors and these 2 ladies didn't know anything about us. They were just slandering us across the fence where we could hear them but not see them :( so sad. The animals deserve better than this. read more

I think they try to do a good job. Shelters usually don't have enough resources for their needs, but the people were friendly when we went kitten shopping. We asked for a veterinarian recommendation for a cats only hospital and they didn't have one . . . a quick google search helped me find one right here in Castle Rock (and a specialist at that). Anyway, a good place to search for a new furry friend! read more

I'm conflicted about the Dumb Friends League. I've adopted two wonderfully awesome cats there and they were incredibly helpful and friendly. The time came from my mom to adopt a dog after hers passed away. We had a great experience adopting and thought we found a good match. Long story short, it wasn't a good match. The sweet dog we adopted suddenly turned ugly and nearly killed our 15 year old dog. With sadness we decided to take the adopted dog back to the Dumb Friends League knowing that the dog was unreliable and might attack the dog again, or even my grandmother. When my mom took the dog back and explained the surrounding circumstances, the man told her that she didn't do enough for the dog and that he couldn't believe she was bringing him back. He made her feel even more horrible than she already did about having to bring the dog back. We couldn't risk another attack and my mom felt as though the dog would be better off in another home, possibly without any other dogs. When she explained that, he told her that wasn't the case and insisted that she not write that on the form. That left a bad taste in my mouth for them and I'm not sure I'd trust them again when adopting. However, I'm still on the fence. read more

Horrible place. They do not care to find a good place for their dogs. I drove to Castle Rock from Denver to adopt a dog that I really liked, and I was very happy to get there and that the doors were open. I went in and a volunteer told me that the dog was out getting groom. He did not know when it was going to be back, so I was welcome to come back later. I told him that I drove from Denver. I went back to my car and stayed for a little while because it was still 10:30 am and they open at 11:00am. I got out of my car at 10:54, and I saw people at the door waiting. I went in because I knew that the doors were open, and I could start the adoption process. I went in and a lady that was at the door before me asked me if I was there for such dog and I said yes. She freaked out and started telling everyone that I sneaked in and that she was there first. I went talked to the volunteer and told him that I was there first. He said that the lady was first because she was at the door before me. I was upset and left. Then, at 6:20 pm that afternoon I got a call from the this location saying that the lady before me cancelled their hold. Also, that she placed a hold on the dog for me for 24 hrs. A minute later they called and said that she had to cancel my hold because there were too many calls for this dog. I told them that I was there to take that dog earlier that day and that I should be granted to place a hold. They told me that I was welcome to come in the next morning and that first come first serve. (In other words they encouraged me to come back and play the same stupid "he said, she said" waiting game the next morning!). Advice: if you are looking for a place to adopt, please avoid this place because they don't care about people or the dogs. They just like to waste hopes for adoption for both the dogs and their customers! read more
