Monsieur Maxx Ortensio "Miso Happy" joined our family today. Well, we did change his name, though. Max to Maxx to honor the dog named for the meeting room we met in.;-) And he just requested we add another name so he is MISO HAPPY. Because he is. I am, too. ;) Room 19 on 4/19, Patriots' Day. Ortensio as the male version of Ortensia, the hyacinth flower name from the Humane Colorado woman who is from Barcelona. Ortensia orchestrated my having first visit with Maxx. The couple who signed in before me as I was negotiating finding a shoe substitute (it took me awhile) kindly said "He's yours." How right they were. How right was Ortensia. And Miso for the soup I was to deliver but the friend was too sick so I went to the Humane Society instead. Six year old Maxx entered the room. After 5 days of yapping at visitors he quietly sat at my feet for a bit ....and then jumped into my arms and fell asleep as I patted him. With a calm reserve. Welcome home, Maxx! We have had nothing but relatively positive experiences with Humane Colorado (DDFL when we used them). We adopted our Boston Terrier, Stella, from the Buddy Center in Castle Rock back in Nov 2012 as a 11month old. She is now 13! We got so lucky as someone else was visiting her when we arrived. Back then you could put a wish list if a breed online and would be contacted if one came in to one of the shelters. Not anymore but we loved that feature. We found a stray Boston Terrier puppy a few years ago and took her to DDFL to see if so anyone lost a pet and since she bonded with us and our other Boston overnight, we asked them please please contact us if no one claims her, and a week or two later we were contacted and then had to adopt her. She is now called Beans and is about 4 years old. We sadly had to put down our 11 year old Bassethound a year prior to adopting our Beans, and took him to DDFL. The hardest thing ever to do, and he was my first pet. They were great with us, let us take a lot of time to say goodbyes. I only wish we were allowed back during the euthanasia, I really didn't like just sending him off like that. They do offer you ashes and paw prints after as well which was very nice. read more

Leslie A. Morton Center has been my go-to for years when finding a new pet. I have adopted many a wonderful companion through them. Their counselors are knowledgable about every animal onsite. But when going through the process, especially if you see a dog or cat that you are interested in on the website, you best get there early!!! It took me several trips in order to find my newest companion. I also had to return a puppy during the selection process. I brought her home for three weeks, but she was extremely mouthy, destructive and very high energy! It broke my heart to take her back. The best thing about visiting the Center is getting to know all the animals. I know in a glance who has been there the longest and who will be adopted first. They currently have a large selection of Pit Bull Terriers, Dobermans, Mixed breed dogs and a lovely bulldog named Trixie. They all need good homes and if my home were large enough, they would all come and live with me! The down side is their first come first serve policy. It can be frustrating to see a dog on the website that you want to visit, then watch them being adopted when you get there to visit them. There are many lovely animals there that need good homes. So I went looking and lone and behold I found my forever boy and best friend my SOUL DOG he's been beyond words the best and extremely well mannered he was feisty when I first got him and was warned he had bitten his previous owner. Well 3 years later never been bit, he was also deemed "not good with kids" he is my grandsons favorite protector, was also told he wasn't good with other dogs. Walked in to pet adoption and about 25 staff were standing around talking to each other while I searched for the proper kiosk. Got signed in and someone eventually asked me if I had already looked around at the pets and I said no, nobody explained that, but will do. Things just continued not to go well but the more I explain the more I sound like the fussy one. If you've ever run an organization, I am pretty sure you'd feel the same. Angel helped through the entire process and made sure the adoption was a good choice and fit! Thank you staff!!! Animals pick you instead of us picking them. Saw this dude with a collar of shame around his head. He had surgery not long ago, thinking possibly post-animal attack, thinking dog maybe? He had dried food all over his body, he wasn't visually esthetic, had a tooth pulled due to it being fractured, he didn't seem to be a ready for a family but the way he looked at me, he had me at Meow. I fell in love in about 5 seconds it took him to climb in my lap and lay down. He picked me. Got him home and that's all that it took for him to find his comfy spots. XOXOXO read more

I love DDFL!! I have adopted 2 of my boys from here and they are the best dogs ever!! The staff here are so amazing and helpful!! Besides adopting animals, I have dropped off strays that have appeared at my doorstep for safe haven. I have also worked with them when a pupper that was adopted from another rescue ended up here. I foster for that rescue and the communication was seamless that we picked up the pupper without any issues. read more

I sadly took a mama dog and her handicap puppy there that had been abandoned. To my horror I found out later through a volunteer there that they had killed both of them. The mama dog they killed a day after she was brought in and the baby who I had spent the previous day with and he was happy and playing with his siblings was killed shortly after I dropped him off. They claimed he was in pain and the mama was too aggressive. Mama was a beautiful Shepard who had been through so much already and was terrified plain and simple. She had been very sweet to my husband and I after we found her. Neither claim they used for their justification to kill them were even close to what I experienced. The volunteer also told me when I inquired about a cat who had been in a large enclosure by the front desk and was gone several days later when I returned to facility that they had killed him too. She said they decided he had behavior issues that made him less likely to be adopted so just like the dogs I brought to them for help were simply disposed of and "taken off the expense books" NEVER take an animal there as they have a tiny disclosure at the bottom of their website stating this is what they do. It's about the money, too long to adopt costs them money so they kill. The image and narrative they project of "we work with the animals to help them find loving homes" I experienced not once but three times with animals surrendered to them for help is a HUGE LIE!! DO NOT take any animal there unless you do not care if it makes it out alive. I am sure they have stories of success but these stories are the ones people also need to hear to make an informed decision for an animal in need. Very shameful and tragic read more

What an amazing organization! I went to find my new best friend & was met with friendliness & encouragement. They even set me up with an Adoption Counselor! Ben was informative, empathetic, and very helpful with working with me to find the right dog to welcome into my home. This shelter is amazing We went in looking for a cat. Our person was Makenzie, and she talked us through which cats would and wouldn't be the right fit for us. We have a two year old and wanted to make sure we were adopting a cat that was okay. She found East (who is now named Maki) and brought her to us. It was love at first sight. I want to give the best possible review to Dumb Friends League Euthanasia. We could not have had a better experience when we had to put our dog down. They were helpful, kind, compassionate and professional. They took their time so that we had time to be with our dog and grieve. They brought him in afterwards as well so that we could say our goodbyes. Just adopted a cute 13 year old chihuahua today and I am very very happy! The very first time I visited DDFL was in 2019 after my White Shepherd had to be euthanized unexpectedly due to a severe injury. I adopted a 5 year old chihuahua/papillon back in 2019, and today I got a new sister for him, because his brother {who I also adopted from DDFL a year ago} died after a stroke episode that left him paralyzed neck down. One of my neighbors fosters kittens. I already met the cat and liked him. She sent the kitten to get all his vaccinations and let Dumb Friends League (DFL) know that I was the one adopting him. They ruined my joy in picking him up. I waited two weeks for the DFL to call me and tell me the kitten was ready for adoption. We played phone tag for the last two days. When I arrived the associates misdirected me to the adoption area three times. Three people at the adoption desk asked me if I had an appointment. Not a single voicemail I received mentioned needing to have an appointment, just to come in and pick up the kitten. They set up my profile for the appointment, my name was clearly spelled incorrectly on the digital screen even though I told the woman how to spell my four letter name. I waited 30 minutes while the other counselors were with adopters. I got upset and aired my grievances. I was then told the adoption process would take an hour. None of that was mentioned in the original voicemails, only to come in and pick up the kitten. I ended up walking out upset. I ended up crying on the way home because I was so upset I didn't leave with him. Someone from the DFL had the nerve to call me and leave a VM on my way home, stating "there was miscommunication", and if they don't hear back from me before 10am the next day they were taking him off hold for adoption. It shouldn't be this difficult to adopt a kitten. Update 6/28/2023: I called this morning to keep the kitten on hold for pick up, and left a voicemail. An associate calls me back and gave an insincere apology. The associate then tells me the process after I mentioned not being told the process. I chose the 1st option to pick up the kitten, sign paperwork, pay, and leave (the exact choice I wanted to do yesterday) instead of the adoption process with a counselor. She tells me the price of the kitten is $200. The foster ladies told me the fee would not be above $150. DFL ruined my entire adoption process. I will not be adopting any animals from DFL in the future. read more

Putting animals on the "pre-euth" list and death row, listing them as aggressive is lying because they don't know what to do with dogs of a certain age or size. I had been a supporter, participating in the furry scurry and whatnot, but I don't want one penny of my money to go to euthanizing animals that can be adopted. The living conditions for the animals are not great at all. I'm torn because these animals need homes, but I seriously question the integrity of the staff that evaluate dogs. read more

Update: Thanks for the response Sara but the information i received at Dumb Friends League was SUPER misleading. I was told immediately "NO" without even knowing any circumstances. I was lied to and told the pup couldn't come home with us because it was a stray & you guys were unsure of the dog's background, and then all of a sudden i was getting read the history of the pup from someone else (I spoke to three different people & was told something different from each one). To me it absolutely seems like an excuse to not give the pup a forever loving home. I will forever think about Ricotta & her poor conditions at this place. Plus there was no mention in your response on the extremely condescending & rude attitude you guys gave us. Hopefully you guys can actually make the right judgment and give her a loving home. For my 67th birthday this year, I found the cat of my dreams at DFL, and he was actually FREE (because I'm a senior). It was love at first sight and just got better and better, once DFL adoption counselor- Andy Winn brought Prince Deku in the room with me. My husband re-named him Romeo because he such a lover! My heart is in so much pain! I made the terrible mistake of leaving my dog there, thinking she would be better off adopted into a bigger home where she would have more space to roam free. Before dropping her off, I asked if this was a no-kill shelter. The lady said that's not a term we use anymore. The animals are only euthanized if they are sick and in pain or if they are highly aggressive. My dog was neither. When I went in, I told them if it ever got to the point that they thought they would put my sweet girl down to please give me a call, and I would pick her up in a heartbeat. They took my number down. In less than two weeks, I called to check in to see if she was adopted, and I was told they put her down because of extreme anxiety. She was less than two years old and one of the most beautiful dogs I have ever seen. It was less than two weeks, and she was anxious!! They didn't even give her a chance to adjust. You guys refused to let me adopt without even knowing my name . it was extremely discriminatory & harmful. If you have an eye on a certain individual, you HAVE to get there early, especially on the weekends. The animal you are interested in could be adopted before you meet them! All of the staff are WONDERFUL with great customer service skills, they are educated and personable to make sure you and your new furry friend are set up for success!! They only do same-day adoptions and have wonderful adoption counselors to make sure you and your potential new pet are the perfect match. There is a virtual waiting list (which can take some time, so be patient) They do roughly 10 minute meet and greets so you can see if you and your potential pet are true best friends! If you do adopt, they go through an in-depth review of your pets known history, medical records and behavioral needs. An unfortunate experience resulting in a senior dog missing out on a new home. They do not make appointments so I took time off work to adopt a companion for my 8 year old girl. I signed in to a virtually empty facility and sat for over an hour before someone spoke to me. The hours are prohibitive for me who works full time which is why I took time off work. I chose DDFL for end of life services when it was time to say goodbye to my cat, my companion of 12 years, Littles. I called in advance to gather information, and the staff offered condolences, and very clear and concise instructions for when we arrive. I'm not familiar with the Denver area, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how organized the parking lot directory was as well! There were easy to follow instructions outside the door for COVID procedures. When we arrived, from the moment we walked in the door the staff was caring and compassionate. You can tell they love what they do. Even though I was there for end of life services, the staff was happy to interact with Littles and talk to her like she was a regular there, and it made all the difference. I know Littles appreciated it too. When the time came to say goodbye, I was in a private room with my cat and allowed to take all the time I needed with her before the procedure. I was allowed to view her afterwards, and again have more alone time to truly say goodbye. I am grateful for our wonderful experience during such a difficult time. I wish we were there on a more positive note, but your kindness and compassion did not go unnoticed.
