Their adoption "process" is nothing short of rude! They have no comfortable place to sit (skinny backless stools), for folks to fill out the electronic adoption form which takes a minimum of half an hour. Then, after you as a customer, are kind enough to provide them with all this detailed information -- they state you will hear from them in 48 hours. WE DIDN'T. When they finally sent an email they stated that we would hear something from them within the NEXT 72 hours (business days). WE DIDN'T. I guess they justify their extremely rude treatment by their last sentence which basically says if you hear nothing from them, you can assume you did not get the cats you attempted to adopt! That is inconsiderate and rude! Their response to this review was they "claimed" they DID tell us there were other people ahead of us trying to adopt the same cat. UNTRUE! (Remember- there were two of us and you did NOT communicate this information to either one of us!) But all readers have to do is look at the multiple other reviewers who also said Almost Home has very poor communication. And, the manager's response was to agree they do have and continue to have this rude policy of failing to notify! I still say if people put in half an hour to answer all their multiple questions then surely they can send out a two minute text informing people they did not get the cat. I was even sorrier that the manager did not agree that they are rude and that in the future they will improve by switching over to a more informative process for the kind people who come to them to adopt their kitties. It appears too many of the cats at Almost Home must be adopted out as a pair which probably decreases their chance of adoption. There was a male volunteer there that seemed like he needs an education about what to say to potential adoptees. He wanted to tell us about THE ORGANIZATION from their point of view instead of providing what he should be saying to customers which is that the adoption fees are very high because it includes neuter/spay, shots and microchip. That is what people want to know so it would be nice if you spent five minutes (or less) teaching them this. As a pair of women with great veterinary care history, animals with longevity, an excellent income, our own home (main home in Colorado and vacation home in Texas) and excellent credit history, it makes me believe if they turn us down, then Almost Home has extremely poor judgement! All of our pets have always been provided with excellent vet care including all shots and even dental care. Our last kitty lived to 14 and only passed away due to renal failure. DO NOT GO TO ALMOST HOME thinking you will be able to adopt soon. They drag out the process more than what is reasonable. Communication with this organization is extremely poor. The application process is quite lengthy, and if you are denied a cat, they give no explanation. There are many reviews that reflect this experience. My four-year-old was very excited about getting a cat, and we applied, only to be denied after being strung along for two weeks. We had to visit in person and were told an email was sent, but despite searching "Almost Home" in both our inbox and spam folder, no email was found. We had received previous emails from them with no issue. Upon being informed of our rejection, we were told we could still hang out with the cats we were not allowed to adopt. Additionally, the organization expects adopters to provide specific information about the cats they are interested in. However, when we asked the woman who conducted our home interview specific questions about the cats, she said she didn't know anything and suggested we visit the shelter during their limited hours for answers. I have had cats my entire life and have always taken good care of them. My husband's parents own a veterinary clinic. I am not sure why we were not accepted, but now we have to watch what we hoped would be our future family members sit in the shelter until they decide to let them go home with someone else. This organization appears to hold on to cats and utilize supplies and donations that would not be necessary if they allowed their cats to go home with loving families. If you have an adopter willing to go through a two-week process for cats they met for an hour, that should show enough dedication to prove they will offer these amazing, sweet cats a forever home. read more

Very disappointing interaction with this shelter. Visited three times, found perfect match and began the process. I endured a very cold and sterile interaction with person who wouldn't even give her name on the video interview. I could tell I was denied before the call was half way through. I have a shelter rescue cat currently and he needs a buddy. No one cared I have a 25 year history of successful cat/dog rescues. I used to donate to this same shelter just a few years ago. The cat my family chose has been there for over a year along with several others. My home is plenty big and we are blessed with strong financial resources. None of this was asked or covered in the interview. The somewhat angry woman, I think just didn't like me and my son. I'm sad for the animals, they could have better caretakers. I notice that most of the five star reviews are from years ago. We found several cats that were located here, but found a bonded pair that really caught our eye. We read through the policy and decided that this place was worth the shot. I sent emails to see if we needed to set up an appointment, never got a response. Tried to call, no answer, left a message... no return call. We decided to make the drive and were able to go inside. The staff that greeted us were very cordial and explained the process for visiting. We told them which pair we were interested in, and they helped us locate them. We spent around 45 minutes with them, and the other cats. This cafe free center must have had almost 100 cats roaming around. The cats got along with us and even returned to us for more pets. We let them do their thing. After spending all of that time, we decided to continue with the application process. We spent time speaking with the staff about the cats we had chosen. We also knew that we would have to do a home interview. No problem. We set up the home interview and a week later met with yet another person over the phone. We have a large home, perfect for a pair of cats to roam and play. We showed them the area we had prepared for acclimation. Where we would feed, toilet, and all of the entrances to the home. They asked about our work life. The interview went well, or so we thought. The next day we received a very vague email that our application was denied. When we attempted to get clarification, were unable to reply. No one will answer the phone. Some of their cats have been in this shelter for a year! They do not want to find homes, is seems like they want to keep these cats. We have a loving home, are financially stable, and just want to share it with a pair of cats that need to be placed in a good home. This was a very good place 8 years ago. When I got my first kitten from there I got to meet the kittens and the process was fast and got to take my kitten home that same day. This time around I just came home crying with a broken heart after the rejection email. Their adoption process is horrible now. I visited on a Saturday and they said the kittens had just arrived there and I fell in love with a kitten named Cyan. I thought perfect kitten to bring some happiness into our lives and our cat after losing our other cat very suddenly, just recently. We did an application that day knowing we were the first ones to apply. Then we get an email to make the interview over video, a week later no follow up to confirm. The next Saturday we drove all the way over to tell them our interview was suppose to be that day and they told us they had no time that day and they don't answer phone calls. They said because of the holidays they didn't see our email and somehow got lost. We were able to schedule for the next day and we were fine with it because the kitten was still there. They did mention they don't hold cats and this is not a first come first serve. They said everyone that applies for the same kitten gets an equal chance of adopting. Fine I guess their rules, even though you're waisting peoples time. In the interview we informed how our cat we have was adopted from almost home adoptions 8 years ago lost his companion recently and seems bored/lonely without a companion & more attached to us after our cat passed. We noticed him looking for his companion to play with, of course we play with him and spoil him even more now but cat play is different. So we thought a new kitten would help cheer him up. He's not a miserable cat but we just wanted some general joy in our home. Today I got the rejection email and it broke my heart to read they thought someone else was a better fit for the single kitten but that our home and family is fantastic for kittens. Just feels like someone came and was able to snatch the kitten when they said we are a good fit and have a good home for kittens & were the first ones to apply. It does not make any sense especially when you guys messed up our video interview to begin with. If you guys have no time to pick up your phones let people adopt the same day. They do encourage you to get two kittens or get bonded kittens this time around and during application offer a donation option. The adoption process I've seen is at least a two week process. Ridiculous adoption policies. We are a couple at retirement age. We are financially secure. We own our brand new house. We have no other pets. Our kids are grown and out of the house. I was a veterinarian for God's sake! I donated my time to multiple shelters to spay and neuter homeless pets. Yet we were denied adoption of a cat that has been there for a year or more. Insulting. I can't believe they have not been able to find this sweet cat an acceptable home in over a year?!?! No acceptable applicants??? What a complete waste of time. We had no communication with any of the decision makers (they hide behind their computers...like the wizard of Oz hiding behind the curtain making decisions without even speaking to the applicants and sending vague, hurtful, and insulting form letters). The volunteers were nice but couldn't really answer questions. There was absolutely no explanation on why we were rejected. Heartbreaking. My spouse and I recently visited Almost Home Adoptions with the intention of welcoming two cats into our home. We're a married couple together over 15 years in our mid/late 30s, we have stable incomes and ample space for cats in our large house which we own, no other pets or kids in the house, and we both work-from-home full-time so we'll have plenty of time to interact with the cats. Despite our previous experience with cats and our eagerness to provide a forever home to a bonded pair, our application was rejected without explanation. Our visit to Almost Home Adoptions started positively, with friendly volunteers who guided us through the shelter. We spent an hour and a half at the shelter, and really liked 2 separate sets of bonded pairs. We asked to apply for adoption for one of the pairs, and when we handed our completed application over to the volunteer, she said she'll run it to the back right now and we could possibly schedule the home inspection before we even leave. However, when she came back out from the back, her demeanor had changed. She said "they're too busy back there to process applications right now, but we'll let you know within 24-48 hours." Something felt off, but we said okay, thanks, and left. Because something felt off, we then went online and for the first time we saw all the reviews of Almost Home Adoptions. That's when we knew something was fishy about this place and our hearts started to sink..... That was Saturday. Sunday and Monday come and go with no communication from them. We know they're only open Tues/Fri/Sat/Sun, so we're keeping our fingers crossed for Tuesday. Then first thing Tuesday morning, we get an email rejecting us. The email read: "Thank you for visiting us and for your interest in our cats. We're sorry to inform you that our adoption team did not feel that your application was a match for adoption, and we will not be moving forward with the process. Please know that we base our decisions on the temperament and needs of the cat, as well as ensuring that their future homes are a fit with our rescue's mission, adoption policies, and safety guidelines.  We enjoyed meeting you and appreciate the time that you put into this process. Best regards, Almost Home Adoptions" I don't get it. I really don't know what they're looking for in adoption candidates if a stable, experienced couple like us is just outright rejected. I have a sneaking suspicion that it's because we didn't provide a donation along with our application, which is an option when you apply for adoption.  It really seems like they operate more as a SHELTER, not an ADOPTION CENTER. And there is a need for shelters, so that's wonderful. But I urge Almost Home Adoptions to consider providing clearer guidelines for potential adopters to manage expectations. Stop getting out hopes up and breaking our hearts. :-( read more

This place is absolutely awful. I wish I would have read the reviews before I went. They are not there to put cats in good homes. They are there to traumatize children any way they can. If you go in there, do not wear a maga hat, that is for sure. Two weeks to adopt a cat?!! (They don't tell you that while you're there, however). Cats are supposed to get acclimated to their forever home, not the shelter. You want cats to have a successful transition into their new home? Then let people take them home so They can help form the temperament of the cat by having them live in their permanent environment. We and our grandson tried for over 3 weeks to adopt one of their cats. No returned phone calls although we attempted 4 times (and left messages). Finally got scheduled for a visit, fell in love with the cat. Application done (although our grandson had to show the gal how to do a picture of his DL). Waited another week for response & set up virtual tour. More follow up on our part with NO success at getting this done. After over a month Of trying to get the staff to respond, we have given up!! I don't think they are actually trying to find the cats homes but are running some sort of hoarding / tax scam sort of operation. I am somewhat suspicious that their "no photo" policy has something to do with the overcrowding at this "shelter". The last question on the application asks you how much money you will donate. I left it blank... I visited last Saturday and found two pairs of kittens that I really liked. Filled out an application and got rejected. I was instantly approved by two other rescue organizations. Why? Because I live alone, am a medical professional (can afford cats + vet bills), have a quiet safe apartment... those organizations will likely get donations from me in the future. I volunteer here and I also recently adopted a new kitten from them. I really can't say enough about how wonderful this place and these people are! They work tirelessly for the cats and kittens in their care and always put them first. Nearly everyone here is a volunteer, so they are doing all of this out of pure love. Do things sometimes take a little longer because they're working with cats that need extra medical care? Yes. But this just shows again that the cats are their priority. I'm very proud that my new family member Nugget came from such a loving rescue. He is a wonderful boy, and came to me neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. I couldn't ask for more! read more

We were told we would hear back within 24 hours. We were not called but emailed with a very impersonal email stating we did not get chosen for the adoption. Like many of the negative reviews here, I had a similar experience. I visited 3 times and emailed a dozen and still didn't come home with a kitty. A complete WASTE OF TIME. I didn't offer extra money on the adoption form. I didn't hear back on my application. I got attached to an presumably available cat. Sat on a dirty, vomit, cat litter, and blood clots floor, where most if not all the cats showed some kind of upper respiratory illness and eye infection. The place was completely over run with animals who most appeared to be exhibiting feral or boarder line feral behavior. It was CRAZY! It was distrusting! Hey, Almost Home Adoptions, is the reason the place is called "almost home" is because the cats never get to go home?? How long have some of those cats been in there?? I just adopted my second kitty from here. I'd adopted the first 3 years ago. I love that they do not cage the cats here. The adoption process is pretty in depth, which I appreciate. They really care about making sure that their cats and kittens are going to good homes. The kitten we adopted was litter trained, up to date with vaccines, neutered, and very well socialized. He has been such an amazing addition to our family. And our 3 year old cat that we adopted here 3 years ago has found his best friend and he is so happy! It's a good place for the cats but don't think adopting any of them is very easy. After visiting there several times, trying to decide to adopt a second cat (I already have one at home), I finally decided to fill out their application. I had an interview with one of the counselors. She couldn't make a decision until she met with the other counselor. I went home excited that I would be getting another fur baby............that didn't last very long. I received a rejection e-mail a couple of hours later. The letter did not say why..........which would have been nice to know. The thing is, while I was visiting there a week before, another couple had come in asking why they were rejected too. They did not get an answer. Do these people want to keep all these cats? Why is it so difficult adopting from this place? Is it because I did not put down I would donate an extra $25 that was listed on the application? I have no clue why this place would get anything other than 5 stars. For starters these cat's are not kept in bright, sterile, cold, and confined "cat condos" and I love that. They are able to roam free and in the process familiarize themselves with other cats and humans. The staff genuinely loves all of the animals here and seem to do their very best to send them home to you although they do have some requirements which I think is respectable. I have fostered kittens, and also a lost cat whom eventually found his owner 2 months later and it left a hole in our hearts which brought us to our search for Oscar. I could not be more impressed or love my cat more! He is super healthy, extremely smart, and well balanced of course with the exception that he is under 1 which makes him very mischievous naturally. Even if you're not in the market for a pet stop in and treat yourself to some kitten therapy. You can meander, play, and pet all of the cat's & kittens your heart desires without being pestered or bothered. I think I spent a good hour there my first visit! My review is like too many others on here: my husband and I have a house, our job schedules allow one of us to be home regularly, we don't have kids, we have a 10 yr old tuxedo male, and I've been a cat-lover/owner my whole life. We had to put our sweet Bella down on Halloween and figured it was time to find another cat to give a forever home to. Because this place is the first shelter that pops up on Google, we decided to check it out. I wish I would have read the reviews earlier, but now I can attest to how removed their adoption process is. After spending over an hour checking out which cat would be the perfect fit for our family, we fell in love w a 15yr old female (Kahlúa) who one of the workers said could really use a home. They told us she's a total sweetheart who would easily get along with our other cat. We originally wanted a younger female, but as the saying goes: when ya know, ya know. We filled out their vague application only to be denied a few hours later. Based off other comments, it looks like they won't adopt unless you say the cat will be an inside-cat only. My elderly cat (mentioned above) loved to sun herself on our patio but that was the extent of her outside adventures and it's heartbreaking to think that's what stopped us from bringing her home to a loving household. I think it's wonderful they care about finding a good home for each cat, but it does appear they rarely let families adopt and don't want their cats to find a forever home. I think by speaking to us and seeing how interaction with Kahlúa we were interested in is a better indicator than a checklist... Tomorrow we will be heading to Cat Care Society as it seems they are more realistic with what a "good fit" is. I hope the best for Kahlúa as cats/animals become less likely to be adopted at that age. :( read more

We have been looking for a new family member and I found Almost Home on the internet. I drove over to see what they were about. Most of the cats roam freely. There are rooms for younger cats and sick cats. The staff is wonderful. Rich took the time to listen to what I wanted in a cat and introduced me to several. I brought my husband back that same day and he fell in love with a pair of sisters. We filled out an application and were told up front we would be interviewed to see if we'd be approved. Obviously they want to find the right kind of owners for their cats. We had no problem coming back for the interview. We were approved. They told us the girls medical history, what kinds of foods to feed, how to introduce the kitties to our dogs,etc. I found it comforting that they imparted such knowledge to us. Yes, they ask for additional funds on top of the adoption fee. We had no problem with that. The staff knows their stuff and their kitties. This isn't a petting zoo so don't get bent out of shape if you don't like their guidelines. If you seriously love cats and want what's best for the animal this is a great place. Don't go an hour before closing and expect to leave with a cat. They don't work that way and honestly, would you want them to? read more

I went to visit, thinking I'd like to adopt a cat. My dog died in September at age 16. Would like a companion. My first visit, I did not feel welcome. Asked a question. Got a rude answer. Felt put off. But bonded with a little cutie, and returned the next day to place an application. One person said I could adopt and bring home that day. Another said they were too busy--that I would get an e-mail. Well, I got my e-mail. It said, "Unfortunately, our team did not select you for further consideration". What does that mean? That without knowing me, I'm deemed not fit as a rescue cat parent? I'm a parent, a nurse, have raised and cared for many an animal. I think they need a new public relations approach. read more

There you have it, folks. The adoption counselor is not willing to admit when she's wrong, and she just might deny you for absolutely no good reason. She sees two young professionals who have years of experience caring for and working with animals as "unfit for pets;" why? We still don't know. If I were looking to adopt another cat, I would avoid the drama and stress of this place. Very disappointing experience. Trying to find a brother for our female kitten, we found a few options on their web site. Visited on a Saturday, Agnes and volunteers were very nice, kitten rooms were nice too. My wife filled-out the paperwork and was told we would hear back. Never received a call or email and noticed on Sunday before they closed the kitten we wanted was not on their web site. Decided to call to find out if we were selected and left a voicemail. Have still not heard back. As another reviewer mentions, the last part of the adoption form asks for an extra donation amount. This must be how they select who can adopt. If you're not prepared to pay extra, unknown sums of money, then look elsewhere. Shady kitten bidding business practice. They should at least be honest about the process. read more

Be warned the if you are adopting a cat from here you will not be able to let your cat outside at all. This is apparently the philosophy of the founder of the adoption center. If you mention a dog door in your home, good luck, chances are you will not be able to adopt a cat, so "almost home" is a perfect name for this establishment. This is what happened in my experience as I went to adopt a cat with my boyfriends children. It doesn't matter that we have been previous cat owners and are insane animal lovers, not to mention responsible pet owners. This place is awesome! I saw 2 little guys on Petfinder and drove right up to the shelter to check them out. Lots of kitties to choose from! Had I not been able to adopt my first or second choice, I am sure another kitty would have been purrfect. It's been three weeks since my kitten entered my life and I'm pretty damn happy I got her from Almost Home. I'm sure the cage-free environment, as well as the fact that she was fostered by one of Almost Home's employees are major factors in how well-socialized she is. She loves to cuddle (one of her frequently used nicknames is SnuggleSlut), loves to play, and is just the sweetest kitty ever. The place itself is a bit overwhelming, since it is filled with cats and people. If you go on a weekend, make sure to set aside a couple hours for the process. The prices are decent. We paid $150 for our kitten which is slightly more than animal shelters, but she was already spayed and had received all but one vaccination. We also signed a contract that stated we wouldn't declaw her (which I totally agree with - I would never declaw a cat) so if that's something you must do, this is not the shelter for you. The employees really care about the cats - one woman actually teared up when she was saying goodbye to our kitty. Do NOT adopt from this place! Worst experience ever. They have a blanket rule that any kittens under 6 months old cannot go to a family with a child under 6 years old. Period. No assessment. No conversation on past family pet history. Nothing. They told us this upfront, but then don't put any ages on their cat lists. So, you find a little kitten and have to 'hope' they are over 6 months old. We called The Dumb Friends League and the Boulder Humane Society and both organizations called this rule ridiculous. We took the chance and found two kittens that really warmed up to my family. Big mistake. The manager/counselor/whatever comes in and says "wow, I've never seen kids this well behaved with small kittens. Best kids I've ever seen. Before any hearts break, these kittens are under 6 months old, so, sorry. That's the rule." We try to discuss things, but she says not to take it personally, even though any slight criticism we say, she takes very personally. So, we leave with two very upset kids and the "caring manager/counselor" (sarcasm) follows my wife out the door verbally attacking her. My wife responds like anyone attacked would (telling her to leave her alone) and this woman screams for us to leave their property and telling me that my wife needs help. Um, excuse me?!?! WTF! Who says that?!?! We leave wishing we had never, ever gone there. This does end happily for us, though. We went to The Denver Dumb Friends League and found two adorable kittens. Their thoughtful and caring counsellors visited us with each kitten, making sure both the kittens and my family were comfortable and compatible. Plus, it was cheaper and I know the money went to a real organization. Again, DO NOT GO HERE! Amazing organization here. The woman who started this organization is a true hero. You will be hard pressed to find another shelter that comes close to this one. If you are looking for a pet, search here first. Your animal will be much further along than traditional shelters, as all animals are cage free, health permitting. Not only will you gain a friend for life, you will be helping to ensure the survival of an amazing establishment full of true souls. Keep in mind, this is the shelter that takes in animals that others are going to put down. Yes, as some stated, the size is nothing near the larger establishments, but the philosophy is nothing close to the larger establishments. This is a no kill shelter, a rarity today.
