I loved this store. We spent a week in SLO in early November. I walked into this store and bought the cutest sage green V neck sweater with a deep cuff. I loved it. Warm and soft and everything you want in a sweater. The day we left I wore it and on the way to the airport I called the store. It went to voicemail. I tried for days to get a really person to answer. It always went to voicemail. I tried today. SUCCESS! I'm praying the owner will call me back so I can order 3 more. Love these. Not sure why they name it "French," other than it does kinda seem like it had a vaguely Parisian feel just from the font in the front. I love French Quarter, and here's why. First of all, they had the cutest earrings and bucket hats! I ended up getting: yellow butterfly earrings, white daisy earrings and a pink bucket hat! The stuff at the store was so cute and had great stuff. It's not your average boutique, it has lots of amazing things and great gifts. Really loved this store! I've only been in the SLO area a few times so I've been trying to venture around more. I stopped at a bookstore across the street and this little boutique caught my eye. The girl working(I'm so upset I can't remember her name) was so sweet and very nice about which sales were going on. (And she wasn't pushy about it either like most sales workers are) The clothes are extremely cute and it was hard walking out of there without taking everything. Outside of clothing, they also have shoes, jewelry, bags, and misc items (candles, plaques, water bottles, you name it!) I ended up leaving with a really soft, striped long sleeve and a wooden plaque that read "This is a reminder to breathe" (something that really spoke to me at the time with what I had going on in my personal life - it was a sign!) I walked in looking for a dress. The girl that was working did not say one thing to me. Didn't ask me if I needed help or anything. So I intentionally walked around the store two times just to see if she would say anything. All she did was look at me a couple times. I passed by about 20 minutes after I left and I saw her helping somebody else. I was like wow. Just because somebody doesn't look like they can't afford to buy something doesn't mean they can. Trust me I have plenty of money. But I don't need to dress like I do. I know what it takes to run a retail store. I used to have one myself. And it's all about customer service. This is a really cute little boutique, tucked away in a small alley downtown. Really cute clothes and accessories, including some unique pieces, can be found here. Very trendy and hip, easy to look around because of the spacious set up of the store, and the staff are very friendly people. The only downside is that this place can be pricey, so if you're not exactly rolling in dough and you see more than one thing you'd like, it can be tough having to choose between them. I did manage to find a really cool necklace here for only $12 though; check out the jewelry display, it can yield some pretty cool finds if you take the time to look. Yesterday when I walked in they were having a sale, an additional 40% off of sale price items, along with a couple other sales, so you should ask the staff when you walk in if they have any sales going on. They'd be happy to let you know, if they didn't already let you know upon walking in. French Quarter is definitely worth my time when I make a visit to SLO. Love the products in this store, at reasonable competitive prices with excellent sales and specials, but customer service needs work. The experience I had with a sales associate in the store, a mature gentleman with salt and pepper hair, was extremely off-putting. Early on during my time spent in the store, he approached me and told me about the sales in store which was a-ok and got me excited for good deals. A short time later he approached again. He was on the phone, or appeared to be, and, without an inkling of a smile on his face, walked up and said "I'll take those," and made a "hand them over" gesture to the items I was carrying. He put them behind the counter for...safekeeping I guess? (There was no communication from him as to why he was taking my items.) I said thank you and smiled, to which he responded with no smile at all and a very curt nod. I honestly felt blamed for stealing when I'd done nothing wrong, and as someone that works in a retail store that deals with theft daily, I can tell you the best way to deter theft is with great service, not by being rude. Right after that happened, I honestly wanted to leave and not purchase the items. I really didn't want to support a business where someone was so unfriendly. Instead, I decided, you know what, I'm not gonna let this guy ruin the joy I'll get from those items. He's done enough harm already. But it took STRENGTH. The overall vibe from him was super unfriendly, like he was forced to be working in the store against his will and didn't want to be around all the "frilly lady things" or be bothered to help customers. All communication from him felt so forced. I was in the store for quite some time while the rest of my party shopped, and honestly would have spent a good deal more money if I'd felt comfortable and appreciated for my business. He was the only person in the store working with no positive energy from another more bubbly associate to off-set his bad vibes so...major shopping buzzkill. Decided to shop around since everything looked so cute and I always walked by the boutique on my way to work. When i came into the shop, i was the only customer there and the sales associates didn't even acknowledge me. Later on, other customers came in and she greeted them and told them all about the multiple deals and sales going on (I listened from afar). I had to ask to use a dressing room and heard again the sales associate telling others about the deals. When I finished in the dressing room and started shopping around more, i went up to her and asked about the sales- only got told half of what others were told. At this point, a male worker (owner?) was in the store and both of them proceeded to stand closely behind me as I continued to shop, talking about me (If i had been helped, etc.) instead of just asking. The man proceeded to follow me around closely for a while, which made me uncomfortable- no one wants to be made to feel as though their presence is suspicious. I kept mulling over whether or not I should just leave, continue shopping or leave and say how I did not like the service. I ended up buying a top and at the cash register the male barely even looked at me or said a word to me. I left and I will not be returning. I usually give the benefit of the doubt at stores I shop at because I am younger (a college student) but others my age were being helped and talked to. Maybe it was a racial thing being that I was the only person of color there? Or maybe just a personal thing. As someone who has worked in the service industry, I was upset and angry a manager/owner would treat customers this way and let their sales associates do the same. read more

This is probably one of my favorite places for clothes in downtown SLO. They always have a lot of nice clothes on display and still makes it look presentable. The girls who worked there were very friendly. There is a little shoe, bag, and hat area if you're looking for the whole sha-bang (I'm sorry for using that phrase), too. There's I think four dressing "stalls" (what do you even call those?), which is a great amount considering the space. Space. There's the problem. It's understandable that since the store space itself is small, it's hard not to make it cramped, so it's not that bad. They did a good job with it. It's just really hard to find what you're looking for. Say you saw a dress on display and want to find it in the store. There's usually 2-3 different clothing items on one rack, so you might have to fish in between (which many stores do anyway, so why does it matter, you ask?). It's really hard to do your fishing. Each rack is stuffed with clothes so the only item you can see easily is the one in the front of it. The ladies working there will help you, though if you need it, so it's all good. Overall, though, the clothes are cute and I always stop here when shopping in downtown SLO. read more

Asked her for a dressing room she had a very dry attitude and made me feel uncomfortable she did not even tell me sales when I asked her about them she didn't let me finish my sentence. Every time I've gone in to this store, the owner (a tall man with salt and pepper black hair) is VERY rude and off putting. I'm not the first person on here to say this either!! In all of our interactions, he's never smiled or welcomed me into his store. If the owner can't demonstrate basic customer service, I can't imagine what he's teaching his staff. Also, the clothes are extremely over priced. There have been multiple times where I've seen items being sold for $60-$100 and I've found the exact same pieces (same brand, color, etc) for $15-30. read more

Most items are a little young for my taste, but this is a great store for the college girls in town. I've bought some basics here when I was in town. They have reasonably priced, trendy, fashionable clothes, shoes, and great selection of handbags. I always make a point of stopping here when in SLO and I always find something. Small but cute selection of shoes. Cute clothes but some tend to be flowy and slightly hippy-ish. Dresses and skirts tend to have shorter hemlines that are best suited for college-aged or younger girls. Huge selection of purses. Customer service is minimal at best. read more

It was a typical day after class in Downtown San Luis Obispo. I was just walking out of Urban Outfitters, and i saw a colorful rack of shirts that said $5! Being a broke college student, i walked across the street to see if this rack was a mirage. But, it was indeed still there. I ended up buying 6 shirts for $30. Where else in the world does that happen? They aren't crappy either. I really like the stretchy cotton material. And they come in every color of the rainbow. Perfect for going to class or just chilling around campus. They also have nice dressy clothes, but they are kind of expensive. So really, the only reason i go there is to restock on my favorite t shirts. They also have the long sleeve version and those are pretty comfy too. Yay for cheap clothes in SLO read more

I love love love this store. Every time i go downtown i always have to stop by. They do have very cheap basic t shirts and tanks which is always good, but they have the cutest clothes ever. I love their styles and their sales people are so nice. They will give you their opinion if you want and they always start a dressing room so that you don't have to walk around carrying tons of hangers. They don't have many sales, i have lived here for a long time and i've only seen them have a sale once. Purchased a couple items for my daughter at this store when I was there visiting my sister. Two weeks later returned to the area and tried to exchange a sweater which was to small. Just wanted an exchange, but didn't have my receipt. They refused to make the even exchange. Wanted me to go on-line banking to prove I bought it. I gave them the date, card number and exact amount I paid, but they said they couldn't check it on their computer. Needed to come back later in the day. While window shopping in SLO we noticed your trendy outfits in the storefront windows. Once inside my entire family was warmly greeted and offered assistance. The sales rack were pointed out by the associate. After finding some items a room was quickly set up for me while my family continued to look for great finds. Not only did the service impress me the selection for a smaller framed individual did as well. As we checked out we enjoyed a conversation about our weekend plans. Today in the mail I received the most sincere Thank you card for my business and a personal reference to our conversation that touched me deeply. LOVE this place. I've been shopping here for the past 4 years, ever since both our kids went to school here in SLO. Initially I shopped here for my daughter, but then I found so many fabulous things for myself too, that both my daughter and I shop here often. It's definitely a 20-something store, but yet as a 50+ mom, I can always find great trendy clothes that are contemporary, yet age appropriate for myself as well. Plus they have fabulous handbags and accessories, from shoes and scarves to gloves and jewelry. Handbags range from $40-$80 but their clothing is the most reasonable (MissMe jeans are still $100). But they have fabulous, sweaters, wraps, dresses and tops--most for under $50. Outside the store at both doors, they always have a selection of long and short sleeve stretchy T-shirts for $5. They have a great sale rack inside where true bargains are....I found a fabulous dress to wear to a wedding this summer for $19.99 that looked like a $95 dress...it was well made and hung beautifully. The staff is ALWAYS extremely helpful and nice and been willing to hold items for us. My husband has been treated well also whenever he's gone in to purchase something for 'his girls'. It probably doesn't hurt that the location is wonderful too....I can't ever seem to go to Giuseppe's for a bite or Peets for a coffee, without stopping in to see what's new at French Quarter! ***** read more
