Stayed here one night recently but only a brief stop, so this only pertains to the campground. The only section open was the smaller (low numbered) loop. This loop is quite tight with little to no privacy (depending on the site). The larger (closed) loop definitely looked much more appealing...but we were grateful that at least they were open. The dump station and restrooms were open, restrooms clean. Although I much prefer more spacious and private sites, the grounds were well-maintained. Nice trees and a lovely creek, but unfortunately the highway is very close and we could hear traffic the whole night. read more

What a well placed Oregon State Park. The tent sites are quite large each with their own fire ring which were allowed to be used. The bathrooms were cleaned constantly and there's access to what is basically a private beach. We were there while a borderline Noah's Arc level rain fell upon the park and there was adequate drainage and thankfully our NEMO tent weathered it with no issues. This State Park is close enough to explore the restaurants in Port Orford, Bandon and Gold Beach. read more

The campground here might rival any in the state! It is very private and secluded between two mountains directly off Hwy 101. The campground has nice sized sites and the tent sites are the best in my opinion because of their location but they have some really nice full hook up sites that are pretty great too. The campground has a private access beach about 1/2 mile walk west through the campground. The facilities are some of the best we've seen at the state parks! read more

Humbug Mountain going up is pretty fair. They cut down the timber at the top of humbug mountain so you can see out from the top. We did the round-trip hiking. We weren't in shape for it. That's my suggestion to you that you make sure that you can do a little hiking if you want to see the entire trail. read more

This place is the best. I decided to book a campsite on a whim a couple months ago and picked a random place for me and my family with good reviews and this was the best decision ever. I honestly just love Oregon and wanted to camp, so away we went. We arrived and we were so happy with our site. I noticed it was also just very well managed with a community feel. They have camp hosts that are really helpful and they sale firewood and ice.. Which is so nice! We decided to take a walk and noticed a path under a bridge.. This led us right onto the ocean and I was in heaven. My girls, sister and boyfriend all had a blast in this beautiful place. We will be returning!! read more

This park is a very cool state run park right on the southern Oregon coast, literally right next to the ocean. It is a beautiful space with awesome scenery and plenty of room to roam. Great park staff that was friendly and knowledgeable of the surrounding area. The park is on both sides of the 101 highway with lots of camping spaces and easy access to the forest, mountains and as well to the beach and water. Pretty much everyone we encountered on a recent trip was friendly and courteous. There are several places to camp that are off the beaten path, you just have to look. This park can be busy during the prime season as it was on our summer trip - but it was still a very enjoyable place to camp overnight, hike and walk, and the views of the ocean, beach and waters is some of the best. The only drawback, if there is one, is with this park sitting on the highway, it brings a certain amount of traffic noise. It's not that bad but it is noticeable to almost loud to closer you are camped to the roadway. Best suggestion, find a camp site more into the park and away from the roadway. As well the off season, this park would literally be to yourself. Well worth a visit when you find yourself on the southern Oregon coast and looking for a place to camp overnight or longer. 4 stars for being right on the ocean, clean and near pristine. 00280 read more

If you're looking for a campground where you can't see your neighbors, this isn't the campground for you. However, if neighbor-proximity isn't a factor, this is a great place to camp for the night. There are showers with hot water (NOT coin operated or time-limited... if you're a camper they're included in your park fee. If you're not a camper, they cost $2). The bathrooms are clean, and water/trash/bathrooms are within a reasonable distance to all sites. And best of all, there's a little trail to the coast, and it is gorgeous. Watching the sunset here was definitely a highlight to our trip! read more

This was my first experience camping in Oregon, and can I just say: Oregon got their mutha' effin' sh@&# togethuh!! Can I get an Amen? Okay, my usual camping trips with my family in Cali tends to be dirty, with pit toilets, dusty campsites, and a lot of driving in between. Humbug was the first stop on our road trip down the 101 to Cali. It's on the lovely Oregon coast with the quiet town of Port Orford nearby where we could easily get our supplies and stop for some scenic pix along the way. If the lovely coast is not enough to get you out here to check out the camping let me just mention that they have flush toilets and (ahem) free showers. Never in my life have I had such luxury during a camping trip. Usually I end up smelling like a homeless person by the end of my camping excursions, so camping here was such a treat. In addition to the showers, there is also a large field in the center of our loop where people could play soccer, volleyball, and in our case, night frisbee with a frisbee that lit up and changed colors. The sites themselves were lush, albeit a little close, but we did manage to make a list of the sites that were a little more private for our next trip. I'll just keep that to myself, thank you very much. There was also a nice little trail leading to the beach, which was definitely too cold for me to even attempt. Even if it was warm enough, I doubt I would have wanted to get tumbled by the surf. I'll save that for Hawaii. read more

Looming far south in our fair state, Mt. Humbug towers over Highway 101 like a statuesque giant. Like most coastal parks, it is tucked away from the winds and actually over the road and behind the cove, to grandmother's house we go! The park itself is nothing really to write home about: 32 full size and 62 tent sites with bathrooms and the like. Showers! Toilets! RVs! Satellite TV! Generators! Yeah, that's "camping" in Oregon. The three distinguishing features that set this park apart from the others are: solitude, private bay and a good hike. With the location being in Southern Oregon, there's going to be a great chance that there will be very few people there, even in peak season. That makes for a much quieter and realistic "camping" experience. It's also surprisingly well tucked in from the road and the noise factor stays rather low. Out from the park there is a nice hike that takes you up, up and more upwards as you climb all 1,500 feet of Mt. Humbug. Now, after all this climbing, you'd think they would do some sort of clear cut to give you a wicked nice view, right? Noooo........don't climb this trail expecting some sort of scenic coastal view. You're hiking this trail for the exercise and to open up your lungs. It's a great trail, the end is just not the climax. The trees and massive root networks all around are the climax. Maybe it's a celebration of trees, bitches. After you get back from the climb, wander out from the park and along the path, there is a tunnel under the road that leads you out into.....your own private bay! As far as I know the beach there is only accessible through the park and nobody ever seems to visit it. It's like Short Sands further up north but more exposed. It's a small little bay that nobody touches, especially not the Port Orford residents. This is the crown jewel of this park and the great thing about Southern Oregon, nobody goes! read more

This place is a gem. We are on a road trip from San Diego, and we have been to a good amount of beautiful places in the past few weeks, but this BY FAR was our favorite place. We are tent campers, and we loved our spot, and we loved the price, and we loved the showers, and we loved the glorious, quaint beach that could be accessed. In spite of weather the beginning of what appears to be a storm, our stay was nothing short of blessed. We ended up staying four nights, and we would've stayed more if we didn't have to be home in a week. Our first time in Oregon, and we are more than satisfied. Th neighboring towns are full of friendly and interesting people, too. Just can't get enough of Humbug - we can't wait to be back. read more

Humbug Mountain State Park - Beach accessed from the campground! - Hiking Near Me

This is probably one of the best places to camp along the Oregon Coast. It can get a bit noisy since the campground is right next to Highway 101, but the bubbling brook, the mountains which surround the park, and the trails and streams which lead you directly to a small closed off beach, all make this place worthwhile. It's just close enough to Port Orford that you can drive over in under 10 minutes to get breakfast or dinner and yet you can feel like you're a thousand miles away from anything on the beach which has hardly anyone there except the odd seal whose head will pop out of the waves. The layout, with the mountains, the valley, the brook and the beach, it reminds me strongly of another one of my favourite places on Earth, Olympos, Turkey, only Olympos is strewn with ancient Greek and Roman ruins among lemon and pomegranate orchards and tree houses. That's not to say that Humbug Mountain doesn't also have a special energy of it's own. At 1700 feet it's one of the highest points along the Oregon Coast and the mountain itself is well worth a hike. The trails are kept very well and the hike runs about 2.5 miles to the top. And what a hike it is! You'll enter a beautiful, lush temperate rainforest, mossy trees, ferns everywhere, giant Pacific pines as you make your way to the top. Apparently Native Americans once used the mountain as site for vision quests but many people have forgotten the fact. The view at the top is somewhat blocked now since the trees have grown but it's a reminder that it's not the destination that counts, it's the journey there. read more

Camp hosts were motoring around and checked me in before I even finished parking. The hosts were very nice and friendly. Park was very well maintained. Walking to the ocean was a breeze if you stay in the lower loop. Being it's right off the freeway, if you are a light sleeper the traffic might bother you. But the convenience of stopping over night on the way down the coast was very much appreciated. Clean showers and restrooms as well. Almost zero reception on the phones which really ticked off the moody teenagers. Ahhhhh. Camping :) read more

We just spent three nights here. Luckily, the smoke from the Chetco fire was non-existent due to the recent rain. Bathrooms and showers are super clean, camp hosts are pleasant and helpful, campsite was fairly private and fellow campers were quiet. Tent site 18 is adjacent to Hwy 101, so you do get some noise from the road. Traffic dies down during the evenings, so it doesn't bother you too much. If it weren't for the road noise I would give it five stars. This is an easy walk to the Humbug Mtn Trailhead as well as the beach from this Park. Drive south and check out Arizona Beach and all of the other scenic lookouts, parks, viewpoints and the towns of Gold Beach and Brookings. Humbug is a great place to launch exploratory day trips. read more

After 50 years of camping I can honestly say this is one of the nicest campsites I've ever stayed at! Bathrooms are CLEAN and showers are hot and free :) There are numerous tent and RV campsites with quite a few pull thru spots, adequately screened from neighbors. Firewood can be purchased at $5 a bundle and you're provided with a cart to bring it back to your campsite. A short walk under the 101 overpass brings you to the secluded beach, but beach combing is not very exciting here unless you're into driftwood ;) Surfing may or may not be an option on any given day, depending on size and shape of waves, but we did see some good sets with 3 or 4 people going for it. Humbug Mountain itself is what draws a lot of people to the park, offering a 5.5 - 6 mile hike to the top. After hiking for a short way you come to a fork; East or west? I choose west, which turned out to be the slightly shorter, although steeper more strenuous hike to the top. I came back down the east trail which was pretty much a cakewalk compared to the west trail. The scenery was stunning, with occasional ocean vistas but it's the climb itself that is the jewel. Take your time - look at the beauty around you and enjoy your day. read more

This is one of my favorite spots on the southern Oregon coast to camp. Wonderful for both tent's and RV's. Spots are large and private, park is kept up very nicely, clean, newer bathroom/showers, rangers and hosts were friendly. Nice short walk to a gorgeous but windy beach. I completed the Humbug mountain trail. It's a beautiful fun hike, just don't go into it expecting a large open view at the. After 3 miles you come to a clearing in the trees with a good view of the ocean, which is quite wonderful, but not the magnificent view you expect on a mountain trail. The trail is well maintained and marked. Do this hike, it's all about the process not the end, but it's well worth it. read more

The campground at Humbug was clean, the people were very friendly, and we loved the beach access. They have a Junior Ranger program in the morning and my son learned about animal furs and wild berries. The bathrooms were well maintained and the showers in the first section camping area were free, hot, and had great pressure. The downsides of this campground is the noise from Highway 101 and the birds. Prepare to sleep with earplugs or be awakened at 5am by log trucks and blue Jays. You are also in close proximity of other campers, with no shrubs or trees between most campsites. Kids should bring bikes, there was quite a parade of them on the drive, and the large field was being used for golf, soccer, and football when I was there. read more

We camped here on Thursday, July 29. This campground was horrible. All the sites are next to the 101, so all you hear are logging trucks day and night - might as well have camped under a viaduct of the I-5 outside LA. All of the campsites are exposed - there are minimal trees and bushes for site-to-site privacy. It was like camping in a fishbowl. To top it off, the ranger was incredibly rude - instead of welcoming us to the campground (she wasn't at her post when we arrived), she drove (yep, DROVE) over to our site in this pint-sized campground to chastise us for not having our dogs on leashes (they were in our tent napping) and for driving over 5 mph through the campsite (really?) - she told us this not once, but THREE times in 10 minutes until I finally had to raise my voice and say, "Okay we HEARD you." Then she had the nerve to say "welcome to my campground" Wow. The adjacent beach is okay - black sand and all, but cold and very very windy (and noisy from the traffic). None of us got any sleep because of the traffic noise (we had earplugs too) and from the bratty kids screaming around the campground. I DO NOT recommend camping here! read more

We just came back from a week long NoCal/S. Oregon vacation. The plan was to camp the first three nights and get rooms for the rest. First night was Elk Prairie Campground. Fantastic campground with the giant redwoods just a few minutes from our campsite. Second night was Golds Bluff Beach, just down from the first campground. Utterly amazing...camping on the beach. Doesn't get much cooler than this. We left NoCal heading to Humbug State Park expecting the same kind of great adventure we had at Golds Beach but unfortunately we were sadly disappointed. Like others have said, the campground is directly next to Hwy101. And to make it worse, I had picked out a campsite closer to the beach. Well, closer to the beach means that the highway is almost directly on top of you. And to top it off, these are also the worst campsites in the entire park. Devoid of any privacy between you and the person camping next to you. In the end, we chose to forfeit our camp fee and find a hotel in the nearest town. Turned out OK...we found a hotel on the ocean for $125. read more

Finally got to stay at Humbug. Been looking and touring through this campground for years with plans to stay sometime. Stopped in again with my trailer on my way to Gold Beach to check out availability and site selection. Was going to seek out the park host for some answers but no need, she was sitting in a chair waiting for questions right by her host trailer. Campground was wide open so made plans to return in a couple days. Was even able to dump my tanks on the way out. Returned several days later and enjoyed a wonderful experience. Full hook up, cell even worked and hiked down to the beach. Small running creek right next to the site and even saw several small fish in it. Friends came back up from Gold Beach and tent camped and had a great time. I will definitely be back to stay longer and look at fishing on the beach. Don't pass this up if you are camping the coast. read more

Beautiful campground that is just a few minute walk from the ocean. Humbug Mountain itself is a hearty 1750 foot climb. Hot showers, clean bathrooms. I do agree with other reviewers that is can be loud, but that is the only draw back. Lovely spot on the majestic OR coast. read more

Beautiful spot if nature had her way. Unfortunately, US 101 prevails. The campground is right on the highway--yes as close as a gas station would be. You will sleep (if you can manage to) in very close proximity to an inclined curve in the highway, and will enjoy the sound of braking and accelerating timber trucks, along with the usual parade of obnoxious, unnecessary motorcycle noise. The campsites are narrow and closely packed--essentially parking spaces. The privacy hedges, such as they are, are between the vehicle pads, not between the tables and the tent pads. Our picnic table was about 12 feet from our neighbors'. They, by the way, had uncontrolled children. It was bad enough that we went on a picnic for our dinner and packed up and left before breakfast. The neighbors actually sent their little boys to pee behind our tent. (Classy.) We were close enough to the neighbor on the other side to hear him snore all night, but that was just the background noise. There was a rowdy party going on well past midnight about 3 spaces down that the host/manager did absolutely nothing about. Avoid this place like the plague unless you absolutely must stay there, as we did. Yes, the showers and toilets were clean. read more

I've never camped at the campground, not even ridden through, so this review is of the day use area on the west side of 101. I like to run 101 when I'm on my motorcycle, as opposed to the I-5 superslab or 97 through central Oregon. 395's great if you want to be on the east side of the Sierras, but I don't usually want to be there. The problem with the coast route, aside from rolling roadblocks made of cars and RVs, is that it can be cold and damp there any time of year. Last week I ran the coast southbound from Raymond, WA to Fort Bragg. It was overcast, foggy, drizzling, and sunny in turn. Overall, cold and damp. Which brings me to Humbug. Part of the mountain is a promontory that goes to the ocean. This scenic day use area is protected from the coast by the mountain, not directly on the beach. It was the one sunny, warm spot on my route through southern Oregon, and I treasure it for that. Add in the expansive lawns, stream, trees, "myrtlewood" (these are bay trees!) grove, drinking water, gazebo with power to charge your phone, and renascent fish hatchery where you can see the trout, it's a great stop and stretch. I always stop there and stay longer than I expected to. read more

We stayed here recently for one very long noisy night. As others have posted this campground is right next to 101 and the road noise is pretty bad. Equally bad to us was the road that goes through the campground. Many campers drove on that road way over the 15 mph limit. Many were pulling some big rigs. I would not recommend camping here with children due to the road. The speed of the driving seemed to increase as it was becoming dark. The ranger drove after a couple of people but the hosts and rangers for the most part seemed a bit overwhelmed. 10 pm is the beginning of quiet time or at least it was supposed to be but that didn't really happen until well after midnight. And I must mention the bathrooms. There are two bathrooms in the entire campground ~ one in the loop 1-27 and one in the loop 28-95. The one in the loop 28 - 95 is ridiculous when camp is pretty full. There are two soap dispensers in the women's and one was empty the whole time we were there. Three sinks are just not enough for that many campers. All that aside I would use the day area again. The beach is lovely. read more
