The Decour here is little quirky my wife couldn't stop saying wow after she saw the ultimate cheeseburger I specially like the chicken fried steak here. They served my wife some chicken that was pink in the middle. We asked the waiter about it and he brought it back to the kitchen, and came back and said all the chicken they cook is like that here. We have been coming here for years always good service till tonight. Went in at 6pm. Ordered drinks waitress forgot half our drinks waited longer finally got drinks. Was having to go up to bar for drinks. Asked for silverware waitress didnt bring enough. After finally getting to order food waitress came to table to tell us they ran out of ribs. Our food came out and sat on a tray In front of our table for long enough for me to get an order of shots from the bar. Then when we finally got served one of our company had to wait for his food. Came in with my family of 6 and although they were busy I noticed several of the bigger tables open. When I asked the person seating if we could have the open table she said no because it seats seven. Joe the waitress was nice, however the salad was old and I sent it back. I had the steak and rib combo, the steak had no taste. I had to use A1 sauce, rib's nothing to brag about, broccoli was like water and the corn was mush. I gave it a chance because I wanted a steak, don't bother. Humphrey Pete's is probably the largest an most well known restaurant in Brownwood. It has a very eclectic ambiance. It's almost like an old barn and an antique store combined. We only waited a minute or so for the server to come greet us but she seemed very apologetic that she hadn't come over immediately. We may be big city folk, but we're in no hurry! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich that turned out to be so huge that I could only eat half of it. I loved that they had peanuts to eat for before the meal, but we were confused if we should throw the shells on the ground or put them back in the basket with the other shells. They sang a very loud happy birthday song to a patron in the restaurant, so if you feel like being embarrassed or embarrassing someone else for their birthday, this would be a great place to do that. read more

My wife is originally from Brownwood. She recommends me to check this restaurant after driving all way from San Antonio. Unbelievably, the steak and shrimp taste way better than Texas Road House. We waited 45 minutes for our food. Our poor waitress was very sweet. We could tell she was imbarresed. Two other tables were seated at the same time and they were both done eating and leaving. When our food came my meat was so burnt it sounded like I was chewing ice when I took a bite. Needless to say we tipped our poor waitress and left. We will not be back. We ate at United. Finally someone from our party got up and got them. When the meals came out, there were at least three diners in my party that were missing items. On the upside, she was very friendly. Went for lunch one day with a group of girl friends for lunch. I tried the chicken strips with sweet potato fries. It was good, but the sweet potato fries were very short and really skinny and I was charged extra for them. It was okay. Plenty of decor to look at while you wait. If you're from Amarillo don't be fooled by the pictures, my steak and of that family's were cold and definitely not cooked as requested.

Typically, one of my favorites, but not so last night. A busy Friday evening, with a "30-40 min wait" I was told. So, I left my name and party size and asked for a table and explained I was going to run an errand and return. 30 min later, we returned only to be told my name was not on any list. The new hostess was not concerned with us, nor helpful. She was actually more solicitous with the pair of bulldogs who seemed to think I had cut in front of them. The place was still crowded and the reception area was tangled with people waiting to get in who had to continually move as waitstaff hurried past with trays of food, which I found to be unsanitary and shocking. After waiting for a manager, we decided to take our business down the road where we enjoyed a great meal. Thumbs down to HP on this visit. read more

Ate here with friends in Sept '18. There was so much old, soft food under the table that I slipped when trying to scoot my chair up to the table. Later, I felt something crawling up my leg & it was a big black bug! Some of our food came out cold & incorrect. We were asked to meet some out-of-town friends here is the only reason we ate there. Being local, we had decided long ago to not eat there anymore. We've just never had a good experience the last 5 yrs...hawaiian grilled chicken tasted like water, incorrect orders, roaches in the restrooms & different areas of restaurant, food never swept from under tables, cold rolls, cool fried shrimp, luke-warm jalapeña pork chops & open bar causes cigarette odor in half the restaurant. I had the catfish and ribs. The catfish was damn good! I am not a "fish person" but wanted to try something different and was very pleasantly surprised. I now wonder if any other catfish will be able to match this... the ribs were super tender, the flavor was ok, but not on par with Famous Dave's ribs. The vegetables seem to be the weak link here, I had corn and green beans. Both were fine, don't get me wrong, my wife commented that they were probably just right out of the can, there was no additional effort to make them stand out. Definitely not a bad little place to stop at if you're passing through Brownwood and it's right off the main road. Our service was fantastic and the food was more than enough to fill our family. The place is a little dated and has a dirty feel. If it was a updated and scrubbed it would definitely be worthy of 4 stars. Stopped in for lunch on Sunday on the drive home from Lubbock. I had been here years ago and remembered it had been good. With our party of 2 at 11:30am we we seated right away. It was nice and cool inside, but there appeared to be condensation dripping from the A/C. There were wet floor signs everywhere. I love the eclectic decor. In case you didn't know where you were, there was 2 visible tvs from where I sat. Fox news was on 1 tv and football on another. I ordered the California salad with the me quite grilled chicken. My friend ordered the soup of technology day which was a broccoli cheese soup. Both of our meals came out quickly. I really enjoyed my salad. There was a good portion of chicken with a slight mesquite flavor. There was a lot of candied pecans, fresh tangerines and green apple. I ordered blue cheese dressing to go with the crumbled blue cheese on the salad. I tried my best to finish it and was full. My friend enjoyed her soup as well. My least favorite part of the visit was the bathroom. Definitely smelled like septic. Idk if they were having an issue or if it's always that way. Where do I begin.... Humphrey Pete's is a local staple and one of the best steakhouses Brownwood has to offer, but you may want to be weary of stopping in if you're expecting good service. I've never really had any complaints about the food or it's quality, it usually comes out piping hot with generous portions. I feel like the guys in the kitchen put a lot into their work and make a product that they can be proud of, I just wish I could say the same about the rest of the aspects of the restaurant. To be blunt, the service here is terrible. I've had my fair share of bad servers, but the ones working here act like they would do anything to be away from this place at all costs. Don't expect to get refills when you come here, and if you order drinks don't bother. The people here drag their feet when it comes to service, and their attention to detail is atrocious. One time I even received a broken glass with a crack all the way down the side, another time I heard the expo call the server four times to serve our appetizer until another reluctant server just had to bring it herself. This place has a huge potential to draw and even bigger crowd than it already does I just don't ever think that either management or the owners will make the changes they need to make to ensure that their guests leave happy which is why I leave them with a two star review. read more

Well, it gets a 5 for taste of food and a 3 for service so overall I have it a 4. Seriously, I don't know if I just got the primo steak of the night or what, but I ordered an 8 oz ribeye med-well and it was one of the best steaks I've ever had!!!! Got a loaded baked potato and veggies. Yum yum yum! Thing is, we were a party of 5...snicker... And it took FOREVER! We drank 3 beers each and had a man that was our DD who only had tea and they cut us off saying it was the law. I'm not sure how things work in a dry county, but what harm were we doing? We weren't loud or anything. Oh well. However, the lady forgot out chips and salsa and then she didn't want to take it off the bill. The food is decent, and the service is usually pretty good. I'm convinced that nobody in Brownwood can cook a good medium rare steak, but Humphrey Pete's comes close. I stopped eating here when a friend of mine had a bad experience. He was the manager of a fast food restaurant and when he had an issue with the food, instead of remedying the problem, they accused him of trying to drum up bad business. read more

Steak cold (would have been fantastic other than that!) , soup cold, shrimp obviously frozen and overcooked, and okra was frozen pre-breaded you could get in the freezer at the market. A great hometown restaurant. We were headed for Underwood's just out of tradition when I saw Pete's. Lets try it. Glad we did. We wanted something light so had the soup and 1/2 sandwich. Great taste and big portions. Filled me up. But next time I will try the Friday special. Frog Legs!! Place is very interesting with plenty to look at while you wait on your food. Been here many more times now. Lately the jalapeno pork chops I've gotten have lacked jalapeno flavor, so I have been sticking to my favorite, the chicken fried chicken which is always good with the sweet potato, but only when they do it right! Sometimes the potato is cold and old and doesn't even melt the butter. Appetizers: Hey, where's the rolls at? We always get rolls! Guess not. They're advertising new appetizers so we trued the spinach artichoke flat bread. It was crunchy on the edges, but too soft in the middle to hold up the sad looking topping. All I could taste was flour, probably due to the lack of cooking the bread thoroughly. I would cook the bread first without toppings so you know it's done, then add cheesy spinach artichoke tomato topping and melt. Seemed to be missing salt & pepper too. Some nice olive oil might have made this tasty too. Stick with the sampler and some peanuts. Cheese sticks, jalapeno poppers, chicken strips. Basic but not bad on a busy night when there's going to be a wait. Entrees: I decided to go for the 16oz ribeye. It was great for a few minutes, medium rare, nice spice, but at least half of it seemed to have been drowned by salt and I couldn't eat it! The dinner salad side was OK, but the fries weren't hot. The wife had the steak and salmon. Her steak was cooked right and was a little less salty than mine, but the salmon was way overcooked and blackened to a crunchy turd. It was a busy Friday night but there's no excuse for serving something like that. One friend had the potato soup. It was good. I could have had that for a meal and would have left happy. She picked out the carrots and said they were too hard. Another friend had the popcorn shrimp dinner and said it was a bit crunchy and the shrimp just weren't quite right. He dips everything in Ranch, so there's no telling for sure. They make a fine Chicken Fried Chicken and Chicken Fried Steak. Best in town. Even though the steak was a bit off, it's still ten times better and less expensive than the best you can get at the other steakhouse in town. Service: The service was pretty slow; need more people for the busy times! We usually get our meal and appetizers all at once within 5-15 minutes, but this time it was spread out to almost 45 minutes which wasn't bad, maybe an improvement over the "here's all your food at once" we've come to expect. read more

The two stars are for the ambiance. Cute, rustic interior and nice back patio overlooking Pecan Bayou. Sadly the charm ends there. The server was a babbling fool. Lots of talking, no refills on drinks. My tea came out after my meal after three declarations of "your tea is coming right up." Those who had ordered beer were served before me. Speaking of which, they would have each had a refill, had anyone bothered to ask. My burger was cooked super well done. I mean like shoe leather. The the side items were also screwed up. I asked a server to let the manager know that he should be aware of all of these shenanagins, but when I saw them tell the manager of the issues with our meal and gesture our way, he did nothing. He did not even bother to stop by our table. I was brought my check on time though!!! You betcha. I'd make a different choice if stopping for a meal in this area again. read more

Went here tonight for supper. Shared 9 layer dip, and chipotle burger. The dip seemed small, certainly not equal to the 10.99 price tag. It said it had bottomless chips but there was absolutely no reason for that. One basket of chips was almost too much for amount of dip. Have to admit the taste was amazing still, overpriced. Fun and kitschy on the outside, I'd love to be here when it's warm to sit around. There's a back deck which overlooks the water, and I bet it's a great place to while away a spring day. The free baskets of roasted peanuts don't hurt one bit. When we arrived last night, our assigned waiter ("Waiter Kid") was on his first day. Waiter Kid had us join the restaurant "club", which was necessary so that we could be served alcoholic beverages in the dry county. They had a decent selection of beer and cocktails. We ordered the fried pickles and "rattlesnake eggs" (cream cheese stuffed jalapenos, wrapped in bacon, and deep fried). A bit later, Waiter Kid came out to tell us that they were out of rattlesnake eggs (at 6:30PM?) but had jalapeno poppers. I asked what the difference was, but he didn't know. We ordered them anyway. When we arrived, we found out that the jalapeno poppers were stuffed with cheddar cheese and did not have bacon. They were terrible. The fried pickles, however, were the best I'd ever had -- they had even more spice and bite than the jalapeno poppers. The burger, santa fe chicken, and steak all got great reviews. My chicken fried steak was ok, but didn't approach the deliciousness of the fried pickles. (I know this is blasphemy, but.... too much gravy, maybe? I had a hard time finding the actual meat and potatoes on my plate.) I think what bothered me most, was that one of my co-workers, a sweet HR manager who had waited tables around the same age, pulled Waiter Kid aside and gently pointed out that whenever a customer finished their drinks or plates, they should be cleared from the table. At this point, we had around half a dozen bottles of beer and 5 empty plates scattered around the table. Waiter Kid nodded and walked off without picking anything up. When Waiter Kid brought us the bill, he overheard me asking her why he hadn't bothered to clear the table, and even though he was annoyed, he didn't still didn't pick anything up. As my co-worker piled food into a to go box, (who had left the Waiter Kid a $16 tip on a 4 top ticket), he found a long hair at the bottom of his bowl, which was....EW. read more

Just an update following my last few visits there. TIMING people TIMING. From the time we got our appetizers to the time they sat our steaks on the table about a minute and a half. Keep in mind the salads came out in between those. Work on your timing. No one wants 15 dishes sitting on their table. Plus by the time you eat one thing everything else is cold. There should be a reasonable amount of time givin to eat one course before the next is served. I would rather have lag time between courses then have them all on the table at once. read more

First off there is a much better steak house in town, however they advertise prime rib every Thursday night. I have been there 4 times to order prime rib and 3 of those 4 times they were sold out. This was not right at closing time either, never later than 7. In my opinion if they advertise something special to bring people in, they should have enough to last through the night. read more
