    Cod and Chips- really good
    Nancy H.

For an airport establishment, I was impressed. It's seat yourself and we chose to sit at the bar. All of the beers on tap were "broken" so it definitely didn't live up to the "ale house" name. The bartender was nice enough and provided decent service, but service from the restaurant wasn't good. The taps all being broken for one. Second, our appetizer (fried calamari) took over 30 minutes. This is absurd for what we ordered. It came out chewy and over cooked. Our entrees were better. I got the cod fish and chips and they were hot, fresh and delicious. I would get it again. That entree is the only reason I chose to give an average rating.

So it seems they are almost always out of halibut. And they don't offer the wonderful halibut tacos on the menu anymore?? What a shame! They were a favorite for years. Ordered the cod & chips but the fish and the fries came out limp and soggy. Comes with a yummy tartar sauce, but no cocktail sauce, and the ketchup is all in little plastic packets. A small sized beer is served in a little plastic cup (CRINGE) so you only get a proper glass of beer if you order a large. One good thing: the beers are tasty and cold either way, but I do respect and love a beer served in a glass. Servers are cordial, and fairly fast. I just hope they aren't slipping up on their fried food, which needs to be served hot and crispy -- since 90% of the menu is that type of food!

I didn't know what I felt like so I asked the waitress what she recommended. I love it when a waiter/tress doesn't hesitate to throw something out there. Her choice was the halibut and it was awesome. I was learning towards a spicy burger and honestly I feel like I'm better off on my flight with the choice I made. Junelyn (receipt 1720?- 8/11/21 was friendly, professional and thoughtful- she grabbed water for my little puppy. I can't wIt to get home but this meal was perfect. Is he even let me have a table with a plug... People around me seemed equally happy... thank you!!

Wish I got to visit the original location. Here at the airport one, they only had one local beer to offer. I don't think "Ale House" is the right term for this establishment, or at least this location. The bulk of the menu is fried food. I don't recommend the airport spot... the fried cod was tasty and hot but the fries were not and that saddened my hungry self a lot.

I do this so they know ahead of time that I am not being picky, just asking for what I am willing to pay for. I usually LOVE the rosemary garlic fries, but mine arrived soggy and barely warm. The server was quick to offer to correct this and returned with a plate of perfectly crisp hot fries! My grandson ordered a kids' salad and the kids' salmon and rice! This was the best buy of the day, as the salmon fillet appeared to be between two and three ounces of beautifully grilled salmon, with a generous portion of coconut rice. The salad was a garden salad with tomatoes, lettuce, and carrots, nicely dressed in ranch dressing. He also ordered the children's dessert of Mini Mousse, which is a good-sized chocolate mousse that he LOVED! Grandma had a couple of nibbles too! I enjoyed a Broken Tooth raspberry wheat, and it was fabulous as always. Bears Tooth Grill offers consistently delicious food, and when they make a mistake, they happily correct it!

It really brings the community together and is nestled in the heart of the artistic Spenard neighborhood of Anchorage. Service is friendly, as quick as can possibly be, and efficient. Food isn't too bad either, they have a lot of different kinds of pizzas, wraps, and salads, but no option for wings or tenders when you're in the theater portion of the establishment. I recommend coming here and supporting a local business. Check their website for the latest and greatest movie adjacent events to keep yourself busy and engaged during the unpleasant wintery months.

If dining is meant to be an experience, then tonight was certainly one. Not the kind you rave…read moreabout, more the kind you unpack over a stiff drink later, wondering what exactly went wrong. I made a late reservation at Southside Bistro, hopeful for a good evening. We arrived 30 minutes early, aiming to grab a drink at the bar. No dice. It was full. The owner suggested we grab a glass of wine while we waited, which would have been lovely had there been anywhere remotely comfortable to do so. So instead, we went next door to the liquor store and made the best of the situation (hello, bitters, Luxardo's and bourbon for later). When we returned, we were greeted with a blank stare. The host had no memory of us, which was... fine. Mistakes happen. We were seated shortly after. Let's talk ambiance. If "cold minimalism meets cafeteria intimacy" is your thing, you'll feel right at home. Shared bench seating put us close enough to hear the life stories of both adjacent tables. Romantic, if you're into that sort of thing. Now, service. Hats off to our server, Gina. Professional, kind, and the MVP of the night. She did her best to carry the weight of what unfolded next. We ordered two apps: blue cheese custard and clams. The custard was lovely, rich, garlicky, and creamy with a well-made flatbread. Alaska's produce limitations made the wilted greens forgivable. The clams, however, were a different story -- overcooked, gritty, and floating in what I can only assume was salted dishwater. Olive oil? Not even a whisper. Then came the entrées. A filet mignon and a rigatoni. Both arrived lukewarm, but hey, they looked fine. The filet was topped with a slice of cold butter thicker than the steak itself (which is bold, honestly), and the mashed potatoes had already developed that signature "left in the window too long" skin. Veggies? Straight from a freezer bag into a steamer. Nostalgic. The filet was, sadly, inedible. Cold, dry, rubbery. Probably sous-vide then left to die. Meanwhile, the pasta was undercooked and bland. I've had more developed flavor profiles from boxed mac and cheese. Now, I've been in the industry over 20 years. I don't send food back. I don't like making a fuss. But tonight, I politely asked to remove the filet from the bill. One bite in -- that's all it took. Our gracious server obliged. Then the owner returned, and that's when the real magic happened. He approached us not with curiosity or concern, but with a smug lecture. Apparently, because I said the dish "looked fine" when it hit the table, I had forfeited the right to express concern about the temperature or quality. He assured me that everyone else was enjoying their meals, as if that somehow invalidated my experience. Irony: the table next to us had just sent back their lamb for the exact same issue, undercooked and returned twice. It's rare that I feel compelled to walk away from a restaurant, let alone leave a review. But the arrogance displayed tonight was just... disheartening. Anchorage deserves better. The industry deserves better. In the end, I paid the 200 dollar bill for a half bottle of wine and two apps, tipped 20 percent (Gina earned every cent), and left with a story. Not the one I hoped to write, but one worth sharing. Jens, if you are going to wear a white chefs coat in the dining room all night, maybe have an idea of how to act like a FOH manager if you aren't willing to dress like one. Never again.
