We have been to this restaurant numerous times. Always love the food. Very generous portion and dishes served very fast. We normally order the cumin lamb, chili fried chickens (the small cubes chicken pieces is lightly fried, not greasy at all, crisp outside and tender inside) fish head, seafood tofu on sizzling platter, snow pea leaves (dou miao)... We like to try new dishes, so every time we go we will order the ones we love and add a new dish to try out. You can ask them to reduce the spice for any dish. The severs are not the most friendly, but they get the job done:) Next time I go, I will take some pictures of the dishes so you will know what to order. We had lunch here again. Feb. 3 1. chili fried chicken: always good. 2. fish fillet: lightly fried and then a light spicy sauce over it. This place was absolutely spectacular. My husband and I visited on a random friday evening at around 730pm. this place was maybe 30% full. WHY????? I guess people dont value good spicy authentic chinese food. Anyhow, we were glad it wasnt so crowded. we had a lovely date night and could actually hear ourselves talking. In order of least to MOst delicious 1. Spicy fish fillet in hot sauce: YUUUUM....Fluffy soft fish in the spicy red broth with lots of numbing spice. Looked intimidating and tasted intimidating. This has always been the star of chinese establishments we have frequented throoughout Bellaire blvd. But guess what? the food here was so awesome that this actually was the least delicious (BUT STILL DELICIOUS) Dish we ordered. 2. Cumin lamb: This took me back to the good ol days in Flushing, Queens, NY. The Mecca of asian cuisine in the northeast. this dish was incredible. my hubs and I rarely finish a main dish and always save some to take home. However, we completely anihilated this dish. likely every morsel was devoured. it was so yummy, we almost ordered a to-go. It's easy to misname this restaurant to the one in front which is Hunan Kitchen. Both are famous Hunan style cooking. Compare to the other, i think the chef just over saturated the use of spicy which is kill the original taste of the main ingredient. They shouldn't leave too much Sichuan pepper on the dish which cause accidentally bite it twice, makes my tongue totally out of taste for the rest of the meal. The crispy chicken (dry) with chili was not good. Each piece I bit into had either lots of powder or very mushy meat. They also didn't use enough of the numbing spice that is popular in this entree. The twice cooked pork was good. I liked it. It's not the numbing type of spice though. Btw. Minimum is 20 for credit cards but of course not written anywhere. Poor business practice! Be careful with paying credit cards! They charge you more tips!! I like their pork ribs with potato... it's really authentic hunan bistro, but honestly the overall dish is too spicy... way TOO spicy. Besides, they modify the tips on the receipts. I was charged more than I authorized. I paid 12% tips for lunch and they charged me more.... This happened more than once. I contacted the credit company to complain and they directly cashed me back the difference. I have to say it is totally UNACCEPTABLE... I will not come to this restaurant anymore. read more

I'm always skeptical when a Chinese restaurant in America had the word Hunan in the tutor. 90% of the time they don't have a single hunanese dish. But this place! Full on Hunanese menu, chef and absolutely delicious. Just the right amount of spice. Super friendly service. And reasonable prices. They were so sweet with my toddler son. Will be back!! read more

The service at this place is excellent! We were greeted and were served by two servers throughout our meal, really polite and helpful! They saw I was pregnant and gave suggestions like "we can make this less greasy and less spicy so it's easy for you to digest and still make it tasty!" Amazing Hunan style food for affordable prices. It's SPICY so be prepared to be an expert eater and use your chopsticks to pick out pesky peppercorns, chilis and chili seeds, and giant pieces of ginger out of your food (if you're like me at least). Thankfully, Hunan dishes are not as numbingly hot as Sichuan-styled dishes so I think I actually enjoy Hunan food more! Definitely less peppercorns overall so I could taste the flavor/spices more rather than worrying about whether my tongue was alive. We had a party of 15 people and called ahead to get a table on a Friday night (and it was the weekend of Chinese New Years, too!) and the staff was very accommodating. We ordered around 13 or 14 dishes so I tried a ton of different things, the most notable of which I'll comment on here (apologies if the names are off...): - Twice Cooked Pork: one of my favorite Chinese dishes of all time (although I think it's Sichuan), featuring fatty pork that's been "cooked twice" -- first simmered in spices then stir fried with bell peppers and chilis. I wish the pork was a little more tender in this one. - Braised Pork Belly: again, what could go wrong with fatty pork?! This dish is similar to the one above except the pork belly is still in large pieces and has been braised. Definitely recommended! - Hunan steamed fish filets (this was on a special menu in the very front of the full menu, it was #3 on this separate list and cost $14.99): SO GOOD. The fish was perfectly cooked and juicy and it came with tons of silky tofu in a really delicate spicy broth. Table favorite! - Mapou Tofu: a classic spicy dish that they do well here. Not much pork, more tofu heavy. The sauce wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be given its bright red appearance. - Cumin lamb: Wish the lamb slices were thicker, they were really thin, like how thin you'd find them slices for hot pot. Flavor was great though! Lots of cilantro in this dish. - Cabbage and chili oil: Not a huge fan of cabbage as I find it pretty bland, but this was as tasty as cabbage comes. - Blistered green beans: Done very well here -- definitely recommend. - Green beans and eggplant: delicious!! The eggplant is super flavorful and not mushy. - Cumin fried chicken: if you like House of Bowls fried chicken wings, you'll love the Hunan Bistro version!! Super crispy, lots of delicious fried onions and garlic, amazing cumin flavor. Loved it. - Hunan House Special Fried Beef: another table favorite, super tender and juicy beef slices served with lots of cilantro and peppers. - And of course, get lots of rice to eat with these super spicy, oily dishes! By far the best Chinese place I've been to in Houston! At 2 stars the duck was the perfect balance of spice and heat, the scallion pancakes were crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. We came in for Christmas and they were really busy. We ordered way too much food but enjoyed the leftovers. The eggplant was cooked perfectly, nicely charred and seasoned but still plenty firm and not too mushy, it was in a perfect savory brown sauce. The steamed pork dumplings were delicious and super filling, I think there were 6 in the order. We also ordered some noodles the sautéed string beans-also awesome. The place was bustling but service was fast and attentive. We were seated near the kitchen and we loved seeing all the beautiful dishes coming out of there. This place is located at the opposite side of Tofu Village in a popular plaza. Plenty of parking. However, be aware during dinner rushes and lunch times during the week it can get pretty packed in this particular plaza. The inside is kept pretty cool. I suppose with all the spicy foods, it's prudent to keep things cool. There are pictures on the wall that can be representative of what they will serve. It helps if you need some ideas. They should have tables that should seat up to 8-9 people. Service is good and friendly. We had to ask for refills but everything was done after we asked so no big deal. The food was rock solid. I highly recommend the lamb cumin and the spicy cauliflower. Just make sure you can handle the spicy. For spicy lovers, this is the bomb. This place is a bit pricey, but honestly it's all pretty worth it. I will definitely return in the future. Bonus: Rice is free, this is such a necessity with all the spicy foods. read more

My wife and I grew up on American and Mediterranean foods, and we first saw the menu, we realized that this was going to be a stretch. Our waiter was a bit worried that the dishes are too authentic (meaning HOT), but we ordered anyway, not getting too adventurous. We ordered a cauliflower dish, Ma Po Tofu, and Fried Oysters with Lufa. In order of increasing heat: - That Lufa & oyster dish was mild and delicious, and we used it to rest our palates after the other dishes. The sauce was great with the rice. A treat. - The cauliflower dish was very spicy with a hot red oily sauce, saluted garlic, hot red pepper flakes, other red peppers, ginger, and jalapeños. I'm sure I missed something. I found the jalapeños to be relatively sweet compared to the other ingredients. This was my wife's favorite, in spite of swollen lips and teary eyes. The cauliflowers seemed to be dry roasted with a very pleasing smokey flavor, which we were told comes from the peppers and the sauce. Truly delicious - Now for my favorite, which was the Ma Po Tofu. Yes it was radioactive hot, but once the mushroom cloud dissipated, the flavor was simply amazing. Had to dilute with lots of rice, but each bite was pure pleasure. There are few dishes without the pepper symbol next to them on the menu. The Chinese patrons also seemed to need extra water and were wiping their brows, but I won't guess what they were eating. They might have bionic guts, but everyone seemed happy & content. The place was packed, and we waited about 10 minutes for a table. There seemed to be some takeout business, but I was too busy deciphering the extensive menu to pay too much attention to this. The staff said that for the eve of the Chinese New Year, business was at a normal pace, but they expect more over the rest of the holiday Prices were very reasonable for the quality, for the amount of food, and for the service, which was attentive and helpful. The serving spoons were adequate, even though two out of three were really ice tea spoons, but the extra time needed to get food onto our plates was good recovery time. We took abot half our food home because we were served so much. I will have to bring friends here to help me navigate to more adventurous items on the menu, but we do plan to return. I highly recommend this. (And no, I have had no after affects from the high heat factor. No need for Tums and the like. Tummy's happy.) read more

Do NOT come here. This place was my favorite restaurant for the longest time. But now, Let me tell you what happened. Me, my wife and my parents 4 people were dining in. I went outside to make a phone call. When I came back, my wife told me that since we ordered 3 cold dishes and 1 hot dish(water boiled fish), we only get one bowl of rice. NO WAY. my wife and her friend two people just came here 2 weeks ago, and they just order one hot dish which is exactly what we ordered today: water boiled fish. They were not told such a policy. So when that happened, my wife asked them "is this a new policy?" They said no, it's been like this all along. So they said it costs extra to get rice. The reason why we ordered 3 cold dishes and 1 hot dish is that we had a big lunch and i was not hungry, my parents just wanna try cold dishes and not super hungry either, my wife is the only one that was gonna eat normal portion. 3 cold dishes and 1 hot dish, you only get one bowl of rice, if they were being consistent, I understand. But two weeks ago it was fine and now because we 4 people ordered less food than usual, they discriminated us and thought we were cheap. No way. I'm not coming back. I'm not here to buy your fucking ugly attitude. At the end, there was rice leftover that we paid extra for, I specifically said "pack the rice too", they fucking forgot/ignored the request. I've been a big fan of Sichuan food and wanted to try out some Hunan food. This was a highly rated option and turned out very well. There was a short wait, and the staff comes around to make sure your order is taken fast. We got the pig ear, eggplant, lo mein, fried rice, squid, and a chicken dish. The pig ear was not spiced as well as I would have liked, but still better on average than other restaurants in Houston. The fried rice was bland. The rest of the dishes were amazing! The balance of spice in the dishes were perfect, and balanced with the rest of the meal. I believe rice was provided with the meal which was nice, and you didn't have to get spend more to get rice on the side. Definitely glad I went here, and would recommend giving it a shot. read more

Great food, great menu. Authentic and spicy. Was brought here after the hubby told me about their lunch here, since I've been craving for some spicy fish head (pardon my terrible translation). This place is like other typical Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, not that fancy and usually a little bit crowded. But we are not picky as long as the food is good. We had the chicken pot, spicy fish head, spicy lamb stir-fry. Everything taste good to me, if you like Hunan cuisine (not the Hunan Beef/Orange Chicken kind of Hunan, though) you will like this place. The spicy fish head takes longer time to cook, but it's worth the waiting, and we order some noodles which goes perfectly with this dish. Btw the portion is pretty big here, and you can always ask the waiter for advice when ordering. Staff are super nice, especially our young waitress. She was super nice and caring from the moment we entered the restaurant. We were seated by the door so we kind of saw how the staff interacted with the customers. Reading these reviews made me believe that the food was going to be spicy and authentic. I think this Hunan food is pretty good/authentic as oppose to all the other hunan restaurants in Texas. It sure can't beat the ones in NY or LA. I've been to better. Food is honestly not that spicy. My standard of spicy is different from other reviewers I guess. Coming from jiangxi province, I eat ghost peppers everyday so honestly this wasn't spicy at all lol. Dishes are a little too salty. The spicy fish head was indeed very spicy, but i really enjoyed it! I love how they add noodles to the dish once they bring it out. Love this place. It is not fancy but the food is spicy and tasty. Take a friend reads Chinese with you because the English menu doesn't match the Chinese. If you are not used to meat comes with bones in them, do ask. For chicken there are only a couple of them use boneless meat. Nearly all dishes are spicy. The dry pots are generally good so are the vegetables, especially the green beans and eggplants. Food come out fast even when it is crowded. Enjoy! read more
