Stopped by here for a late lunch, takeout with my neighbor. She's been here before but this was a first for me. I had the combination fried rice, 6 chicken wings(app) and a soda, total $18 give or take. Took about 20 min from ordering for it to be done and we were on our way. The restaurant was small but clean for the most part, except a half eat'n bowl of noodles on a table. There was a flat screen on the wall broadcasting CNN. The establishment is in a small shopping center with a gas station, dominoes, a sushi place and tae kwon do facility. My rice was good, moist and still relatively hot when I got home which took about 10 min. It was packed in the usual black bowl with a clear lid, soy sauce and ketchup were included in the bag along with one fortune cookie. I had chicken, shrimp, beef, eggs, onions, etc in the bowl but it seem to be more shrimp than anything. No biggie, I like shrimp! However, while indulging I bit on a shrimp tail so they weren't cleaned well or maybe it was accidentally in there but I just spit it out and continued to enjoy. when i tell you this place has the best food i have ever had, i mean it. staff is responsible and quick. have been here twice and both times were great. chefs were busy but was still able to make my order in 5-7 minutes. the decorations are beautiful and the chairs and tables are wiped clean while the floor is spotless. i highly recommend this place. the food is so good i am able to eat it for probably years straight. great variety on the menu too. will definitely come here more. read more

First time order......ordered fried rice - received white rice.....ordered two orders egg rolls - got one order....ordered Mongolian beef - got bowl of sautéed onions and peppers with a few fatty strips of beef that you had to pick through vegetables to locate.....begging the question: WHERE'S THE BEEF? $40 delivery with tip - to get half (or not what was expected) of ordered meal. Ate here last night because our normal Chinese restaurant was closed due to a fire. Not really impressed as the soups were just ok, the Szechwan chicken had way too many carrots and not tasty and the customer service was very poor. New to the area, it was difficult finding the right Chinese food place within our delivery radius. Hunan cafe has become our new go-to and hasn't let us down! Their portions are very reasonable and food quality is better than some other Chinese food places in the area. Take out orders are always ready within 10 minutes no matter what time of day, and delivery usually takes about 20 minutes on average around dinner time. Food is ALWAYS steaming hot by the time it arrives. Reason for the star knock down is the customer service by the employees taking orders over the phone...eh not the most friendliest of people. But then again, they're just taking orders. Overall, still our go-to for decent lo mein, general tso chicken, and Kung Pao chicken. read more

I have been a customer at the Hunan Cafe on Southpoint Drive in Chantilly / Stone Ridge, VA for 10 years. I have stopped ordering food from them from time to time because of percieved health and sanitary issues. One time, I observed an employee preparing food and wiping the perspiration from his forehead with the back of his hand and then vigorously shaking his hand and flicking his perspiration from his hands toward the food that was being prepared. I reported it to the owner and she said it would never happen again. However, last night I ordered a large amount of food to be picked up and when I went inside to get the food that was still being prepared, I heard a person in the kitchen coughing. I looked through the opening to the kitchen and nobody in the kitchen was wearing a mask, hairnet or gloves. I informed the lady in the front at the counter and she said she didn't know that the people in the kitchen had to wear masks. I took pictures and video of the kitchen staff and contacted the Loudoun Health Department. I left and ordered food at another restaurant where everyone was wearing a mask and practicing proper health safety. However, while there the owner of the Hunan Cafe showed up (she had followed me there) and started yelling at me and said nobody else at any of the restaurants on Southpoint Drive wear masks or gloves. It was Sunday night and my boyfriend was hungry and craving Chinese food. We were in a rush because he was on a couch potato roll that day, sitting for hours watching football, so we had a limited amount of time to grab food before the next game started. We just moved to the area 2 weeks ago and we pass this place off Gum Springs Rd every day to get home. Since it is so close to our house, my boyfriend really wanted to give it a try. I was a lot more hesitant but really wasn't given too much of a choice. Walking into the restaurant I was a bit surprised and a little confused. Surprised because it was a lot nicer and more furnished inside than I expected. Although it is small, there are a lot of tables inside, and an LCD mounted on the wall. Everything seemed very neat and clean too, which I appreciate. Confusion hit me once I looked at the wall art. On one side of the wall, opposite of the TV, was your typical, huge, Asian painting. On the same wall as the TV, there are film reels hanging. I don't understand how that fits into a Chinese restaurant, but whatever, I was still determined to be open-minded about the food. We ordered chicken broccoli and shrimp fried rice. The food was ready in a little more than 5 minutes and we were home and opening the containers up 5 minutes later. Everything looked really good. As soon as I bit into the shrimp fried rice, everything went wrong and I immediately spit it out. According to my taste buds, the flavor was just OFF. Now, I am all sorts of Asian (Filipino, Japanese, Chinese) and I am very familiar with fried rice, so I really trust my judgement on food. It really tasted like I was eating mushy soy sauce with a strong after taste of shrimp. Ick, no more for me. My boyfriend thought it was OK, but he also eats nearly everything. I hadn't lost my appetite but I was scared to try my chicken broccoli. I've definitely had better elsewhere. Again, the flavor just was not satisfying or appetizing. I took a few bites and gave up, giving the rest to the bf. I really wanted to like this place because it is so convenient and because we do not cook. Pretty good Chinese delivery. We live in Stone Ridge so delivery is stupid fast. I am the guy who sees the test of any Chinese take-out joint as their mastery (or lack thereof) of Shrimp Fried Rice, and theirs is bangin'. They also do a fantastic job with egg-drop soup (another of my favorites). All other dishes we have had (Mongolian Beef, Szechuan Chicken, etc.) have been excellent. One disappointment (and sort of a big one) was the General Tso Chicken. When that is done right it is pretty fantastic, but this seemed to just be sweet & sour chunks in spicy sauce. Sort of a let-down. Pretty nice apps, also. All told, this place is a welcome addition to the area and easily trumps our only two other options out this way. read more

Definitely not a place that I crave but it is right next to the house so in case I get snow in for a week again then, I might stop there right after the snow is over just because I am tired of eating what is in my fridge without driving much in the snow. My friend had once the lunch special (beef & broccoli....I think). The rice had no taste and the meat was just greasy. As for me, I order the pad thai ( I eat pad thai everywhere I go) and it was just full of grease without much flavor. The great thing about the place is that speed. Very good typical Chinese food. I'm not a giant fan of their egg/spring rolls, but the Chicken with Garlic Sauce, General Tso's and Pan Fried Dumplings are all about as good as you expect from a regular neighborhood place. The place looks clean and you can see the cooks work, which I know is important to many people. There's an identical place on the other side of South Riding with the same menu, decor and food but with the TV on the other side of the room. I'm dropping my previous review a star because Hunan's quality just isn't what it was a few months back. When I first moved out to Ashburn, this was the closest Chinese restaurant that delivered. 6 months ago, their Ma Po Tofu was one of the best I've ever had. Then something changed a couple months ago and the next few times I ordered it it had a funky/fishy taste. So then, I switched my regular order to the Kung Pao Tofu. Supposed to be spicy, right? Not. Even. Close. It tastes more like an Orange sauce. Which is ok, but definitely not spicy. The fiance consistently gets Chicken lo mein and is happy with it. Hunan does the job on those nights where we have that conversation: "Hey, I Don't feel like cooking, want delivery?" "Sure" "...pizza...Chinese...ok, I guess we'll order from Hunan." Best little carry-out in town! Even for delivery, the food is HOT when it arrives. The atmosphere is basically carryout with a few tables and disposable tableware - the menu includes all the Chinese favorites from soups to fried rice to Hunan meats (beef, chicken, etc). The portions are more than enough to share. The service is friendly and prompt. Their egg drop soup - nondescript in most places has become my 'must have' here. We've been getting menu's from other competitors and will try new places. The delivery services is fast and we always tip them very well. When the food arrive, they are still hot and fresh. You would be shocked the number of Chinese joints around my home, there are over 10 in a 3 mile radius, and I live in the hills of VA. This location is ok, nothing over the top about it. However it did take 4 employees to take my order. Don't order anything special - as all my special requests were no completed. I have an allergy to onions and the onion was left in everything. I ordered 5 dishes to go, and when I got home my family and I only had 1 small thing of white rice to share among ourselves and the dishes. We've been coming here for a few years. The food has always been consistently OK. It's generic chinese food. It's not like we order from a place like this expecting a Michelin star ranked meal. But because of a recent experience, I have to draw the line in the sand now. Let's start with the lo mein. My noodles smelled like rubber. Go to any tire shop and take a big whiff of the fresh rubber. That's what they smelled like. No clue how they were even able to do that. Next up, orange chicken. 90 percent breading, 10 percent chicken. Was over fried, oily, and tasted terrible. For the third dish, white freaking rice. The rice we received was burnt and not cooked correctly. How a chinese food restaurant messes up white rice is beyond me, but they managed to. Fourth, chicken in garlic sauce. 85 percent carrots, 5 percent of something that was supposed to be garlic sauce, and 10 percent of stringy thin strips of chicken. I was baffled picking through it. Finally, pan-fried dumplings. These were not fried at all. Way too doughy and the filling looked like someone chewed up a slim jim and spit it in. $40 worth of food that is now in the trash after tasting each item once. It's almost like this place knows they can get away with serving crap because they are located in a suburban hub and there's not a lot of competition. The quality has been on the decline for some time. They either need to go out of business, or execute a serious overhaul to improve quality. We won't be returning. read more

Turned out their general so chicken is 90% starch/dough, 0~10% chicken. I have been eating General so chicken my entire life, I have to say this is definitely the worst I have ever tasted. So I went to the Hunan Cafe last Saturday with a very unpleasant experience which i think its very important to share with others. My family and i have been ordering from this restaurant for more than a year. we do deliveries most of the time, but my wife and i decided to go to the store on last Saturday since we didn't plan anything for this long weekend. The young man who took our order was pretty nice, and i had my all time favorite, orange flavored chicken. so we sat next to another couple which were having orange flavored beef(i think) on a GREEN plate with a little dent on the edge. when our food was ready, the couple finished their dinner and left half of the orange beef on the table. now there came an older guy which i believe was in his 30s, he took the half plate of orange beef and went back to kitchen. his action caught my attention immediately because when people cleaning the table, they normally clean the whole table instead of one plate. after about 5 mins, this same guy came out with the same plate which had leftover beef stews in the same position and some newly cooked beef filling out the other half of the plate. when i saw that, i stopped eating and told my wife to stop as well. also i knew it would be the last time ordering from them. So if you like their food and don't mind having leftovers, feel free to order from them; otherwise i would never ever recommend this place and try to avoid them at all costs. read more

This restaurant is great. Its our go to carryout rest when we don't have time to cook. It's fast and within minutes of our house. The ka prow, moogoo gai pan, family style bean curd, pepper steak, general tso are on regular rotation with us. I love the fresh abundance of vegetables in every dish. read more

I've eaten at Hunan café for both takeout and dine in. It's very clean, the foods delicious , and the price point is reasonable. The time to prepare your food is very quick and they have gotten my order right both times. I highly recommend the crispy beef, one of the house specialties, as it's very very good.
