I'm not sure what changed, but the food now is SO bland. It quite literally had zero flavor. We got the general tso's chicken and the Thai basil chicken. Ordered extra broccoli, which cost $3.90, and only got 5 pieces (2 of them are not in the picture). The broccoli in my general tso's chicken was practically raw, and there was hardly any sauce. The sauce, chicken, and broccoli were flavorless. The Thai basically chicken was also flavorless, and the chicken was slimy. Both of the sauces were water consistency. Also ordered extra duck sauce, didn't even get 1. Their Thai iced tea is watered down and again, bland. Their sushi is the only decent thing on the menu, but even that isn't the best quality. read more

I go to Harris Teeters all the time, but today, I finally decided to drop in at East Gate Asian Bistro for a quick take-out order as we've been on a quest to find a good but cheap Chinese take out place in the area. I open the door and immediately realize, this ain't going to be cheap. The interior looks upscale, and not a hole in the wall like I had incorrectly thought all along. I asked how long a General Tsos order would take to make. The receptionist told me 10 minutes or less. So I place the order and pay $20 after tax. The food was sweet with a noticeable kick of red pepper. I did notice the pan-Asian menu... and maybe this is a good option for a nice dinner for a special occasion, but I don't think I'll be able to afford this place as my go to Chinese take out joint. read more

My sister and brother-in-law took us here for dinner our last night there of our last visit back in VA. The food was absolutely delicious! We had a a variety of rolls and appetizers as well as some spirits! It was a small restaurant, and not too busy when we got there. The staff there was great! Drove past this place and decided to try it for dinner. Seating area was clean and there were lots of customers that night. We got the Kung Pao Chicken and the Pad Thai. We also got a Rock and Roll specialty roll at the recommendation of the waitress. The Kung Pao Chicken was okay and spicy (which i like). Sadly the Rock and Roll specialty roll was a disappointment and didn't taste good. The Pad Thai had too much fish sauce, little chicken and needed seasoning. We informed the waitress of the disappointment of the roll and Pad Thai. Safe to say that I will not be coming back to this place. Omg. I rarely give bad reviews. But...If drunken noodles could be any worse, I'd like to see it. These had the flavor of plain noodles noddles just out of the water even though there appears to be a light coating of "sauce". I don't understand how this easy dish could be such a fail. I hadn't ordered from East Gate in a long time. I found an old menu and placed a delivery order. The order was much more expensive than I expected, but I paid and was told 45 minutes. I am on the edge of their delivery range. My order arrived 3 min earlier than expected. I had accidentally ordered double the sushi I thought. The pieces were large and gorgeous. I asked for a couple menus and found prices had increased - but well worth it! The sushi was awesome! We ordered a Thai Basil Chicken that was better than expected (could have been spicier) and the chunks of chicken were large and well cooked. Overall, I highly recommend East Gate. read more

This place has been my favorite for the past several years. All their rolls and sushi are super fresh and delicious. Above all, I like how clean the place is (most sanitary of all sushi places in the area), and the staff are always friendly. They have lunch specials even on Saturdays. We tried almost all sushi places in our neighborhood, but we end up going back to this place for my son who loves a variety of rolls, my husband who cannot eat sushi (since they have so many other options), and myself, a nigiri and sashimi lover (as someone who grew up in Japan). Chinese food wasn't bad, just very average. Lo Mein noodles were over cooked and very mild flavor. Rice was nice in that it wasn't greasy, but again average flavor. The sushi was zero star. No flavor. None. Zero. Cardboard. I had "yellowtail" "tuna" and "tobiko" and a roll with tempura shrimp inside, "spicy tuna" on the outside. Nothing spicy, not even the wasabi. Yesterday I placed an order for my family for 4 entrees and a sushi platter for dinner. I live about 15 minutes away so round trip is about 30 minutes. We got home and noticed one of our dishes was missing and the rice for all the entrees was also missing. I was a bit annoyed because that meant I would have to go back to get everything again. I called the restaurant and spoke to someone. I gave him my order number and said what was missing. He apologized and asked if I would be willing to come back and he would make it right. I sighed and said ok and drove back. I just assumed they would hand me my missing entree and all the rice I was missing. I told the lady when I got there and she handed me a bag of the missing things and apologized. I got in my car and thought to myself, "man.. they didn't even offer to give me a discount or anything for my troubles of returning". Keep in mind when I first picked up my original order I TIPPED THEM even though it was take out. So I was a bit annoyed that I tipped them for them to mess up my order and not refund me anything or give me a discount but I understood mistakes happen and I didn't want to complain or make a scene. Fast forward to getting home, I open the bag and I was surprised. They gave me an EXTRA amount of the dish that was missing, an additional bowl of soup, AND tossed in an entree of general tso's that we didn't order, and of course all the containers of rice that were missing. I was very surprised and shocked. They went above and beyond to rectify the situation. Best of all, all the food we ordered tasted fresh as usual and was delicious. This place continues to be our favorite Asian restaurant in the South Riding/Chantilly area. read more

I love this place! Too bad this incident today, April 22 at 12:25 PM has soured my experience. There was a 8-10 person deep line waiting to pick up their call in orders. This Asian gentleman was waiting for the employee to come back to the window before entering the booth. This man, shown in the photo, cut everyone while we (myself, included) told him to get in the back of the line as we all called in our orders too. He said, "Well, too bad" and shrugged. If you are reading this, entitled man, I hope you can learn respect Asian people as you love our food. Most of the people you cut were Asian with the exception of 2 White people--who also said something. As for the restaurant, I wish the employee had not checked him out first and told him to get in the back of the line. This is one of our go-to-spots for sushi. I have to say it's pretty good sushi for where we are in the world. Full disclosure, I'm a sushi snob and lived overseas where fresh sushi is served. It's an experience like no other having the fish pulled from a tank and prepared in front of you! East Gate isn't that place, but they do have access to some very fresh sushi and ingredients that make this place top of our list! We've been coming here since 2020, and have yet to dine in since it was during the pandemic and in-restaurant dining was closed. They've since opened the restaurant dining, so we're planning on heading in to get the full experience. I can't speak to any of the in restaurant experience, if it's good for large groups, families or such, but I do know they're very good with pick-up and delivery. They have a wide variety and the sushi is very good! Bottom line - highly recommend this place and we're looking forward to our next experience! read more

CHANTILLY, VA 11/28/18 DINNER +The Shrimp Lo Mein was pretty decent, except it had like 2-3 pieces of shrimp. -The General Tso's Chicken was not the large chunks of chicken deep fried to a crisp with dark brown sauce I was accustomed to or looking for. You know, the dishes you find at D.C. carry-outs. -I requested 5 hot chili oil packets and they said they would need to charge after 2 packets. Wtf!?! I have never been to a Chinese establishment that does this...never at the Yen's establishments in Loudoun County. Please learn from them. -The food was a bit on the greasy side! -The Hot and Sour Soup left a lot to be desired; check out the picture. -Monosodium glutamate galore. -No loyalty rewards program or local coupons. I may give this place one more try, but my first two visits weren't all that impressive and it doesn't take a lot to impress me with American Chinese cuisine. An Asian place with a menu as diverse as this should have a large amount of flavors on display, but as far as I'm aware, everything tastes like the oil it's fried in. The drunken noodles taste like the beef fried rice, which tastes like the lo mein, which tastes like the oil. It's mediocre at best, and it's disappointing to see such a vast menu get kneecapped by its blandness. The sushi is also just okay, obviously it doesn't taste the same as the rest, but for 5 fewer dollars, you can get much better sushi at the Harris Teeter next door. Take note: we have only gotten take out here because there inside service was closed for so long due to Covid and the we have only proceeded to get take out since. The food is pretty good, we typically get the sushi deluxe and the fish is tasty and fresh. We have had a variety of appetizers and they are all pretty standard, nothing spectacular but still tasty. Their online ordering is easy enough, however, most everytime we order we show up right at the time it says it'll be ready and it's clear it was ready much earlier so the sushi has sometimes been a little warmer than desired waiting for pick up. We also ordered for a scheduled pick up once and they were 40 minutes behind and when we initially showed up we were told it was a 10 minute delay but they kept pushing it back without really updating us. To be fair, they were SUPER busy and I bet take out orders were just on the back burner. Still a little frustrating though. They made some amazing sushi. I live in California and I know my sushi. When the fish is fresh and the chef what's in that extra touch that's what makes Difference. High hopes for this place based on reviews. This is a real no holds review. Sweet & Sour Soup - warm not hot. First taste/texture. It had a minimal taste. Never have this with such lacking flavor. What was worse was the consistency - it tasted like someone spit in the soup type of consistency. Why I have no clue. Would never get again! Sushi - expectation high. Result - over smoked salmon that tastes like it was in a restaurant/kitchen fire. This was so inedible, maybe liquid smoke was a factor too (just guessing). Price horrible for this and such small pieces of fish outside of the over smoked taste. Would never get again! General Tso's - expectations high. Result - sauce watery and taste like sesame. Green bell peppers? Never never never?!?! Broccoli rock hard. Chicken was there (some are just all breading). Size vs other restaurants medium. Would never get again! Not sure what's occurring here. Prices are high, quality is mediocre. For the Nova region, you should go out of business. Asian restaurants outside the area and state, far exceed this quality. Nova restaurants as a whole have no idea of how a restaurant works or how to elevate service to the quality expected. Cooks and chefs shouldn't be allowed to say, "I worked in NY, LA and DC". Sounds great but if you ended up here then high quality/well respected restaurants that people respect don't need your skills. At the very least strive for more and not status quo. Every person that comes to the area is appalled at the subpar performance and quality of restaurants here. East Gate you should close and do something that you are great at. Your restaurant is unfortunately grocery store quality at best. And there's enough grocery stores here already. read more
