Wow, well, here I was in the middle of nowhere in Roswell, New Mexico. No offense to the residents of Roswell, but I had never heard of this town prior to arriving here while driving towards Carlsbad Caverns. It was Saturday morning and I slept in at a motel and took a break from my usual camping. It was about 11am and instead of looking for breakfast...I decided to have an early lunch and was craving some comfort Chinese food including hot soup, hot tea and a lunch special. Here I discovered this Hunan Chinese Restaurant through Google Maps. They were just opening and I was the first customer heading inside. Hunan Chinese is located right on the corner of the main road. it can't be missed. Fortunately for me, they were offering dine-in service during this pandemic so I had an opportunity to sit down, relax and not have to take my lunch to-go and eat in my car. Inside, the restaurant had a quaint and calm setup. It was a nice and pleasant atmosphere and I had a good feeling about eating here. They had a Lunch Specials Menu with a choice of 22 items to pick from ranging in prices from $6.95 - $7.95. You can't beat that! Included in the Lunch Specials were soup to begin with, an egg roll and steamed or fried rice. I selected special #9 - Chicken with Mixed Vegetables for $6.95. I also ordered hot tea to drink which cost $1 or so and received a glass of water without even asking...that was nice of them to do. An added bonus was also receiving noodles and duck sauce to start with. So few times you rarely get those noodles unless you specifically ask for them. My cup of soup was egg drop. It was hot and fulfilling, just the way I wanted to start the meal. And...btw, the noodles were crispy and the duck sauce was flavorful. Now...I must say my dish, chicken with mixed vegetables was enormous! I mean, cmon...for lunch this could have served 2 people! It was just a lot of food that it practically overflowed off the plate. You believe? Not too often you receive all this food especially for most folks wanting a light lunch. Still...the chicken and vegetables were all fresh and hot, the egg roll was crispy and the rice was just fine. I was able to eat about 2/3's of my plate and put the rest in a take home box. My server was real friendly, nice and attentive. I appreciated her service. Eventually during my meal, more locals came in and sat down. Overall, for just happening to be in Roswell, New Mexico...I found this place Hunan Chinese Restaurant to be a real winner. I was extremely fulfilled after leaving here and it started my day out on the right note before making my way 130 miles to the southern border of New Mexico and Carlsbad Caverns. I'm not sure what else is around in Roswell, but I would certainly suggest making Hunan Chinese Restaurant a must go-to spot in town. read more

Visiting from out of town and decided to give this place a try... I'll start with the positives... the owner and employees were very friendly and welcoming. Restaurant was clean and the bathroom was clean too. It's in a older building that used to be another franchise so you can tell it has some age and wear, but it's still taken care of and not run down. Portions were generous... we ordered the Hunan Special Dinner for 4 and took it to go. Everything was cooked fresh and packaged well, unfortunately that means no plated food photos for Yelp because we were hungry and just dug in... My only complaint was the flavor. For me it was a bit bland. I like a little more spice and punch, but that's personal taste not really a quality issue. So I'm landing at 3 stars... just because it wasnt my personal flavor profile doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. Two foodies from Houston in Roswell, NM having dinner. We used Yelp to find some Pho but none was found. So, we decided on Chinese food from Hunan Chinese. An old KFC has been repurposed into the restaurant. Love that old buildings are being used with a renewed purpose. The hostess was friendly and personable. She was extremely patient as we, new comers, read through the menu. We ordered Shrimp Eggs Rolls, Hot and Sourand two dishes 1.) Shrimp, Hong Kong Style Crispy Noodles with combo chicken, shrimp, and beef, and 2.) Chicken with Broccoli which added up to about $50.00. Dinner for two, I think it is not bad. The portions are large. What we ordered was enough for two more people. While the food was cooked for American consumption, we were satisfied. Two foodies are self-proclaimed Asian food experts. Food was not good.. egg drop soup was bland and the texture was really chunky, looked like someone busted a load in the soup. The fried rice was not really even fried rice it was just plain rice colored orange, the chicken was not good I could make better food at home. I ended up throwing away 90% of the meal, service was alright lady was nice. I told the server it was delicious but I just felt bad telling her the truth, that the food was dog shit. The inside was dirty and the outside smells like sewer. Would not go back ever!! Please do not waste your time or money!!!! We were craving Chinese food and were driving through the area so we were excited to give it a try. The lady (owner) was very friendly and greeted us with a big smile. The place was very clean and the food was decent, except for the hot and sour soup that comes with the lunch special. We ordered two lunch specials and decided to try the egg drop soup and hot and sour soup. I asked if I could exchange the hot and sour soup for the egg drop soup because it was extremely salty overloaded with soy sauce. She happily exchanged it, but when we got the bill she charged us $2 for the exchange. It was a very small bowl of soup. I thought the right thing to do was to exchange the soup without charging for it. Also if you want water, they'll charge $2 for a small bottle and not even give you a cup of ice to fill your water in. Because of this I thought they only deserved 3 stars. read more

I wish I had read these reviews before deciding to stop in for a quick lunch on the way to Ruidoso. My youngest child, who's 8, made the best choice when she ordered only a Coke Zero. She said she couldn't eat at a place that smelled like a sewer. I didn't think much of it at first, but I should have. The staff is incredibly friendly, attentive, and welcoming--I can't say anything negative about the service. However, the food was disappointing. The fried rice tasted more like Spanish rice from a Knorr rice packet than anything Asian. I ordered the orange chicken, but it had a strong taste of orange peel, almost like eating fried orange rinds. The chicken itself was flavorless and extremely tough. The best thing we had was the egg drop soup, which was just okay but stood out as the best item they served us. My wife had the Kung Pao shrimp, which was more like Kung Pao celery. She received a few small, bland shrimp buried in a pile of celery. My son tried the Sweet & Sour chicken, but he said it tasted like red pancake syrup poured over unseasoned chicken with mostly vegetables. Unfortunately, my entire family left the restaurant still hungry, which defeated the purpose of stopping in Roswell. Bless their hearts, but we won't be back. read more

While on vacation in Roswell, we decided to do chinese take-out back at our hotel. Hunan had good reviews on Yelp so I sent hubby to get food for our family of 5. We ordered 5 different takeout dinners and egg rolls. We received Kung Pao Chciken, Cashew Chicken, Sweet & Sour pork (sauce on side), beef and snow peas, and sweet & sour chicken (sauce on side). Every dinner came with WAY more veggies than I'm ever used to receiving when I ordered a meat entree...carrots, snow peas, pineapple, yellow squash, zuchinni squash. You had to search for the meat. Some of it was greasy, or mushy. One of the worst parts of the meal was the noodles. I've never had screwed up Chinese noodles before. If I lived in Roswell, I would not go back to this place. It is one of those place that if it looks like a whole in the wall...it really is. read more

On our first visit Roswell with not a lot to choose from, after reading the reviews and being on a budget we chose to go here. There was ample food in the serving, however, it was dry and pretty tasteless. What they call Chow Main was actually brown noodles, and the fried rice had no veggie or egg in it, just brown. I had the lemon chicken and it was like chicken nuggets with lemon sauce, my daughter had sweet and sour chicken and it was the same nuggets with a sweet and sour sauce over it. Been a fan and customer since they bought the place! Kathy and her staff are wonderful. They will bend over backward to make a special combination.
