My husband and I were looking for Chinese food in Chinatown, and we're so glad we landed on Hunan Cuisine -- he absolutely loved this spot, and I did too! You order at the table using a QR code, which I was a little nervous about at first because I have a peanut and tree nut allergy and usually like to speak directly with a server. I added a note about my allergy in the online order, and a server came right over to review everything with us and make sure it was safe. It was incredibly reassuring, and I felt like they handled my allergy very carefully and professionally. Housed in Chinatown, I knew this place was going to be a hit the moment I walk in - from the staff to the aromas. The cold chili oil noodles and spicy chicken appetizers tasted extra refreshing as it was super hot out. The beef lomein was delicious and everything here was not dry at all. The mapo tofu was my favorite. It has a nice mala taste to it. The fried rice was also good and had a lot of flavor. The soup dumplings were really good and savory. The shumai was not that good. Scallion pancakes tasted a bit too much like mochi. Cucumber salad was alright, very strong sesame taste. A lot of the food on their menu is spicy; love that for me. Service was very friendly and the staff kindly brought a plastic cup with a lid and straw for my toddler to drink water out of, and even brought out a paper plate and plastic utensils for him to use without me asking for it. Great Hunan spot in Chinatown! You order through their online platform once you're seated and the dishes come out very quickly. My favorites are the wood ear mushroom salad (cold dish), lamb with scallions, dry stir fried green beans, and cauliflower with pork. About 30 minutes after our food arrived, the staff repeatedly came to remove plates that still had plenty of food on them and kept asking whether we wanted takeaway boxes, even while we were clearly still dining and talking. When I finally asked what the issue was, we were told they thought we were "done eating" because we were not eating continuously. I've honestly never experienced a restaurant where customers are expected to eat nonstop without pausing for conversation or breaks. The repeated interruptions made us feel rushed and uncomfortable rather than welcomed. Good food aside, the dining experience itself was unfortunately disappointing. read more

Super busy place with good food. The spicy stuff is spicy, you've been warned! The clams were so-so, too spicy and missing some flavor. The cumin beef was very good, and also very spicy. I would like to come back when I'm in town and try more stuff. The seating at rush hour was a painful experience, they have a waiting list system but they don't really follow it, so for example when my turn arrived they made me wait for longer and sat other people. I was almost out the door when they finally sat me and then from that point the service was very good. The prices were reasonable IMO for the portions. The place is very casual and can be loud during dinner hours, and there isn't much of an interior design, it looks like the place haven't really been updated for a long time. Good portions of food and my mixed veges were good. I asked for fresh garlic in the sauce and it came sliced raw so it was pretty spicy and I added it anyway. The beef soup was a lot and enough for 2 hungry people. We had leftovers of the beef soup that we didn't double dip into and packed it up and left it w a spoon for someone who might be hungry bc we were tourists and can't take it home. I did not however, like how the older male wait staff touched the water cups right on the areas we put our mouths when trying to be attentive and give us extra water so I declined but it was too late bc he already touched my cup at the areas I drink from so since I was thirsty I tried to drink only at the very edge of the cup. It's a pity to see that people walk in an authentic Chinese restaurant and don't know what to order. If you know Hunan food or love good spicy food, this is your spot. Wanted to try something other than Italian or seafood this evening, so we had an Uber drop us off in a very busy/narrow little part of Chinatown here in Boston. I couldn't imagine trying to drive and park here, I'd recommend you do the same- either uber or walk here if you can. We were greeted promptly, but let me just say- there is no muss no fuss here, the lady asked us how many, asked us to sit down, and they'd call us. Very direct, not rude or anything, but definitely no overly cozy tone for sure. Which, tbh, didn't bother us at all, the place was PACKED solid, so I understood the urgency and directness. Cool, no prob. The second time she addressed us caught us a bit off guard 'cause, she straight yelled at us with "who was first?!" To which I was like "uhh, yes, we were first..." but it was wild, I felt like I was on a sitcom type situation for a moment. The food order was a bit of a newer experience, as you order your food from a site on your phone, and they bring it to you. Prices were about standard for the area, about $20 per entree. Still, unique and pretty convenient way to order. Now, let me just say how blown away I was at every single item we ordered- it was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! We had the Hot and Sour soup, the Egg Drop soup, the scallion beef, and General Tao's chicken. All fresh, and top notch. They did not miss there. The service was very calculated, but minimal, and I get it, cause sure, they're super busy. The only criticism I had was that when it came time to pay, the gentleman (who really wasn't our server) stood looking over my shoulder and actually objected to the tip I was leaving on the screen (I was choosing the first option, like 15% or 18%) and actually asked me if had bad service (which is weird 'cause it was a totally different lady that served us) and he was pointing at the tip that said 25% on the screen. A really really solid spot in Chinatown. The vibe feels legit for Chinatown as soon as you step in - iykyk. You order from an online menu and all the items come out at a pretty fast pace. And fortunately, this place is not afraid to give you the heat. The spicy dishes can genuinely pack a punch and I feel like I eat a good amount of spicy food too. I got the stir fried green beans, peppercorn beef, and pork fried rice and I really underestimated the beef - but the pain was worth it. I love authentic Szechuan food, so while in Boston seeking some I came to Chinatown and walked around checking out menus, ultimately stopping in here. The menu is filled with many appealing items. I opted to start with their crush cucumbers, which were great! Lots of flavor and I liked that there was soy sauce in them too! Next up was their cumin beef... it was decent. Nice amount of heat, but not as strong of a flavor compared to what I'm used to. I felt it was missing that umami. Service in there was ok as well... I cannot believe I'm only finding about this restaurant now! This is such a gem nestled in the bustling streets of Chinatown, which can easily be missed. We visited on a weekday for dinner and it was packed, which was already a good sign for us. We were still immediately brought to a table and shown by the wait staff how to order. Everything is digital here, which is nice if dining with a large group. I also appreciated how they had pictures for all the food options. We ordered three dishes - the crab rangoons, sweet spicy chicken, and the fried rice. My partner isn't usually a fan of crab rangoons, but he really liked these ones! They were very well cooked and the filling was perfectly savory. The chicken dish had a huge portion and was very flavorful. Although it was very oily due to the chili oil it was fried in, it didn't feel very heavy especially paired with the included white rice. My favorite was probably the fried rice which is such a classic but was done perfectly here. I really look forward to stopping by again or even ordering some Chinese takeout in the future! read more

I was visiting Boston Chinatown and came across Hunan Cuisine. As someone who loves to eat spicy Asian food, I had to try this out. As you walk in, you're not told where to go. Presumably, assuming everyone has eaten at the restaurant before or were too busy to give us notice. We sat down with the other two groups who were sitting on a wooden bench. Once a table became available, a server came over to inquire who was next, in which everyone went by the honor system. After about 15 minutes, we finally were seated. No menu was given and we scanned the QR code to order. Once we placed our order, someone came over to confirm our order and inquired if rice was needed. I had to order one of my favorites, the sliced beef tendon with chili sauce. The sauce was nice as it's Mala (numbing spice) but not the best I've tried. I was craving for mini soup dumplings so we ordered that and was disappointed. It tastes exactly like the frozen soup dumplings you can buy at the supermarket. We also ordered the fish filet with chili sauce thinking it was stir fried or boiled of the sort, didn't think it would come out as fried. The fish was really thin where it felt nonexistent and just crunch. Perhaps this just wasn't for us. Of everything ordered, the rice was the best, then the beef tendon, and the other two placing last. Disappointed that this didn't fit our taste palette, especially when it had a 4.5 rating on Google. read more

Every so often I get a craving for Chinese-style stir fried string beans and this time I ended up at Hunan Gourmet. Their stir fried string beans are the best stir fried string beans I've had in Boston! Two of us ordered the spicy happy clam ($17.95), chairman maos braised pork ($23.95), stir fried string beans ($17.95), and chang sha lard rice for 2 ($10.95). This was quite a bit of food and we ended up taking home a lot of leftovers. The spicy happy clam had a nice flavor but I felt that they could have cleaned the clams a bit better because there were some clams that were still sandy. The chairman maos braised pork had soft and savory pieces of pork-- they weren't tender enough to fall apart but were braised long enough that the savory soy-based sauce soaked through all of the pork pieces. My favorite dish was the stir fried string beans. They were prepared in a dry-sauteed way with a lot of white pepper, so the seasoning reminded me a lot of Cantonese-style salt and pepper shrimp. The beans were fresh and crispy and perfectly blistered! If you do not mind rice that is a little bit greasy, I would highly recommend trying the lard rice. It had so much flavor that it could be eaten by itself. All of the dishes are quite flavorful but on the salty side so we ended up chugging a lot of water during the meal. I did not have any issues with the servers and they were super kind to us, although it seemed like they felt more relaxed speaking Mandarin with us as opposed to speaking English with other customers. read more

Mini soup dumplings were a no for us. We have eaten at plenty of places. They taste like pork meatballs with no juices. Flavor was off. The sauce that you dip them in tasted like vinegar, very bitter. We had the chicken Lo mein and it was good. The stir fry on it was perfect. It blows my mind when some downtown Chinatown actually has authentic Chinese food and my mind was blown at Hunan Gourmet. As a spicy fiend of course I had to get something that's covered in pepper, chop pepper and steam duck blood $23. And yes the dark thing is blood in solid form. The duck blood is super fresh, with a spongy texture that's soaked with flavor. The fish fillet with pickled vegetable soup $32 is also delicious but not as flavorful as I'd hoped. It's served with fire so it doesn't go cold. But there's not a lot of fish and the soup is kinda bland. The eggplant preserved egg with green pepper $20 is difficult to mess up. It's seasoned well, kinda more umami than spicy. And the eggplant is mashed into a smooth and moist mess, mixed perfectly to absorb the pungent preserved egg flavor. The service is fast and not unpleasant, kinda over priced but it's downtown Boston. Definitely worth a visit if you're craving some spicy Chinese food. read more

A solid place for dinner in Chinatown. We came here at 7pm on a Friday night and were seated as as soon as a table freed up (within 5 minutes). The waitstaff were very efficient but friendly, as they were quick to confirm our order (placed through QR code), bring our food out, and refill our waters. The food was good, but especially a haven for spice lovers. In order of spiciness, we got: - Soup dumplings: these were free of spice and executed well. The flavor was savory and delicious, and both the skin and filling were tender. There could have been more soup inside, but they were tasty even without. Would get again. - Eggplant string bean: tender with just the right amount of crispiness on the outside. Had a tinge of spice, but wasn't too much to handle for those of us that are spice-weak. Would get again. - Bean curd with pork: a medium level of spice among what we ordered. Was very tofu heavy with not as many pieces of pork. I would have preferred a higher amount of pork in this dish, so would skip next time. - Black fungus salad: deceptively spicy, even though it does not appear to be. The dish went well with the vinegar for dipping on the side. Would get again. - Minced pork with pickled sour bean: this had our noses running with every bite. My spice-loving friends saw this as the ultimate challenge, so they enjoyed it. I cannot handle spice very well, so personally I would skip next time. The food quality is not bad but nothing too impressive either. We ordered takeout for a family of 4 and had to wait less than 15 minutes which is incredibly impressive considering the holiday rush. They even had a policy of over 15 minute waiting is a free soda and over 30 minute waiting is a free cold dish appetizer! However, past the efficiency of the food, the rest was quite underwhelming. Ordering "beef tripe in chili oil" is always a must for me at any restaurant but this time it was very disappointing, half the amount of meat that other restaurants give and lower quality taste. For 10.95, I was expecting more. On the brighter side, their beef noodles were not bad and the fried buns were fine too. Not a bad place to eat at (especially if you're in a rush) but would not be my first choice. read more

Step up from last visit! The xiao long bao are actually quite excellent; thin skin with a nice soup inside. The pork dumplings and the shrimp dumplings are also not bad. Weakest were the scallion pancakes which were oddly stiff, and also much too oily. The savory dishes were all excellent. The stinky tofu is a variation of the Taiwanese variety; it could have been even more stinky, but it was nicely fried and came with a sauce that I wasn't quite used to but liked nonetheless. The water spinach ('ong choy') was an upgrade from the last time - it had more leaves material this time around, and also seemed to contain more 'wok hey' this time around. The kung pao chicken was excellent; sauces and flavors nicely coated all over, with a balance of crunchy peanuts that were fried into the dish. The cumin beef was also nicely flavored, with a deep cumin flavor put into the beef dish. Perhaps a bit too oily, but it worked well. The eggplant with meat dish was really good - the eggplant nicely fried (possibly doubly fried) and meat complemented the eggplant really nicely, without overpowering the dish. The flavors were a bit more mild than the spicier flavors of the other dishes. The spicy melon in a sauce worked really nicely. Careful - they require a 18% minimum on the service charge, despite not having that regulation clearly printed or stated in the menu materials. read more
