I read every negative review and I have to say it kept me interested. I just moved to the area about a year ago and I've tried probably 10 different places in between Gaithersburg and Germantown. I stumbled into this today and told my husband we HAVE to order because I just found the best hole in the wall or the worst experience we'll ever have in our life. So I gave this a 5 star because I knew what I was getting myself into. I saw the restaurant, looked at the menu, saw it still delivered IN 2026 and knew exactly what type of place this was based on the price. It kind of sounds like at one time had a hay day, but from my point of view, I got exactly what I expected. So, yes, I do agree with the reviews. I called in our order and I thought the woman was short with me, I expected that, the rice was yellow, I expected that, the egg rolls were oily, I expected that. Because I have eye balls and read the room. Idk if I'll be back, but of those reviews there's a referral to what seems to be better than H.E. I'll try that next, but honestly if that's not very good this will probably be my go to. I'm not expecting Ruth Chris, this is a Chinese restaurant in a small plaza outside of a metropolitan area. I'm going to have to place this in the "No" column. We ordered General Tso's tofu and the sauce was gross. Way too sweet and the piece of broccoli that came with it felt like it was an afterthought. Why include that one piece of shriveled broccoli with the rest of the dish? Give several pieces or none at all and stop with the deception that this meal was even slightly healthy. read more

Still only two stars. Tried this carryout again... As a former New Yorker, of course nothing compares to New York Chinese food but I keep wanting to give this place another chance so here I am 3 years later with another review. The employees don't even try to have any rapport with the customers. They're borderline rude and very unfriendly. The Lo Mein was delicious but noodles were overcooked & left a large pool of oil on the plate from just one serving (see photo). Chicken & Garlic Sauce was so sweet, it could have been dessert. When buying almost $30 of food, they refused to apply a coupon unless I had it with me. My go to dishes are (beef and broccoli)(shrimp fried rice )(lo mein )(sesame chicken)( Eggrolls and shrimp toast. Anywhere I go. I was satisfied with all of these including the price point. I've tried several places in the area and they're always lacking on one thing or another and not very well rounded. I found that this place was. I have had food from Hunan Express for the last twenty years. It used to be really good, with some periods of average. Then it became average with some periods of better and some periods of worse. It has evolved to bad all the time. We still order from them once every few months to give them another chance, to no avail. It is always bad now. I don't think it's just me, because they used to be buzzing with people picking up orders, and yesterday they only had one other besides mine. To those in Raleigh please tell me where there is good Chinese food. Have found one but would like to find some others. Do NOT ask for delivery!!! The driver will ask you for a tip, does not say thank you and will take what he feels he should get for a tip. He came to my house one time and snatched my money and walked away. This second and last time my order was $13.89. He told my son the order was $14. My son gave him a $20 and asked for $5 back and the man gave him $4!!! I don't care if it's only a dollar it the principal. He does not tell me how much I am going to give him for a tip. Big, loaded flavor from a small local Chinese delivery/carry-out restaurant. It is actually my favorite of this type. The most popular dishes that my family orders are the General Tso' s chicken, beef chow foon and seafood delight/combination. Everyone in East Village knows that this is the best Chinese restaurant within a mile of our community. If you want the best Chinese restaurant within 10 miles, then you have to head to Michael's Noodles at T-Square in Rockville. As expected, Hunan Express serves everything! Chicken with broccoli, General Tso's, wonton soup, egg rolls, lo mein, fried rice, Hunan beef, Moo Shu pork, Kung Pao bean curd, etc. This joint is open like 12 hours a day so you can call in and come by 5 minutes later to see that your food is hot and ready. How do they get your food ready so quickly? They are obsessed with making the customer happy. Customer service is their #1 priority. I tend to get the string beans Szechuan Style. This dish is pretty spicy, but it doesn't tear my stomach to shreds. Any of the tofu (aka bean curd) dishes are solid choices. My mom swears by the chicken with broccoli. The broccoli IS good. The chicken tastes okay. It lacks a punch. The fortunes inside the fortune cookies tend to be repeats though. They also serve sushi here but similarly to my ex-girlfriend, I don't trust it. One would think that after a huge dim sum that lasted from 11am - 1pm. Then ice cream. Then a 2 hour nap immediately following the ice cream, that one would not be particularly hungry for dinner. However, that person is obviously not me, as when I awaken from my nap I was consumed by a ravenous hunger and started to hunt for carry out menus. It's an unfortunate fact that I am often overwhelmed by guilt over my terrible eating habits. These feelings of guilt are usually preceded by a visit with my ever lovely, but critical mother. However, when I am feeling guilty, I clean house and toss out carry out menus. And thusly, on a wet and rainy Sunday evening, having just woken up from a long nap, and desperately hungry, I realize that I had thrown out every single Chinese delivery menu. It was only by the grace of my everlasting laziness that I unearthed the menu for Hunan Express, which had left a flier on the door a few weeks prior, and which was still lying forelorning on the side table by the door. Out of options, I decided to give them a try. I ordered the chicken with black bean sauce (which was marked to be spicy), and my husband ordered the pork moo shu (in honor of the swine flu). We were told that it would take 45 minutes before it would be delivered (at this point, panic sets in on my face). However a quick 20 minutes later, there is a knock on our door, and lo! It is our food! HURRAH! Although my chicken with black bean sauce had a chili pepper next to it on the menu (denoting that it's spicy), there was absolutely no spice to the dish at all, and the black bean sauce was more reminiscent of a brown sauce then a black bean sauce. That being said, it was still a tasty dish with plenty of veggies and tender slices of chicken - as long as I accepted that the "chicken with black bean sauce (spicy)" was really "chicken with veggies in a brown sauce (no spice)". Eh. My husband's moo shu pork was loaded with crunchy veggies and the pancakes that it was served with were chewy and sweet which was a nice surprise. What I loved, besides the speed of the delivery, is that they also gave us two containers of rice. Usually, when one orders moo shu, because it is served with pancakes, they won't give an extra container of rice - no worries here. Please keep in mind that this *IS* crappy American-Chinese food. By no stretch of the imagination should it *EVER* be considered authentic Chinese food. However, for what it was, it hit the spot (even if my dish was totally misrepresented). Most importantly, they were fast, delivering in 20 minutes with the rain, on a Sunday at 6. That's worth an extra star! So glad my lazy butt didn't trash this menu in my last bout of guilt cleaning frenzy! read more

Disgusted by the food and horrified at the service! My family has been ordering from here for over 20 years. Their food was always good, exceptional actually and service was great as well. Over the past few years occasionally the food seemed not as good and it's been a little inconsistent but we blow that off since it isn't all the time and the few times something was really awful they gave a credit or replaced it. Last night we ordered, late, which probably was a mistake. We got a few dishes which were fine but 2 of the dishes, crispy beef and crispy eggplant were awful. The beef I have had there and I know the difference, the eggplant I never had so it's possible they don't make it good. The beef dish was not even edible, you couldn't chew it! I called to tell them and mentioned the eggplant but wanted credit or they replace the beef, didn't ask for the eggplant since i figured they just do a bad job on the dish. The owner (sky) new owner called really rude and said 10 people ordered that dish and no problem so it's my fault. He was talking over me, wouldn't let me speak and finally I said do you care about customers, he said no, not when they complain. Eventually he said I could return the dish, which i paid for delivery and I'm so disgusted I don't want to go back. After over 20 years of ordering from there you would think they would just say sorry instead of yelling at me. I didn't complain about the other dishes, didn't ask for money back. While they have a little bar bench to eat at, this place is meant for delivery and take out. They make it very fast, large portions, and good prices. I've been getting Chinese food from Hunan Express since I was a kid. I occasionally stop in for my usual California Rolls when I am home. Over the past several years, I've stuck to pick-up. My food is always ready upon my arrival. There hot and sour soup is amazing! I love the California rolls, there is a perfect portion of crab and avocado. I think the rolls are decently priced.
