This is a storefront Chinese restaurant. The interior is in dark wood tones with carpeting. The server greeted me immediately with a regular menu and a lunch menu. I ordered the triple delight lunch special that comes with fried rice, soup and an egg roll. The egg roll was mostly wrapper and was room temperature. The filling was good, there just wasn't enough of it. The hot and sour soup was good and came with fried wontons that tasted house made. The triple delight had a sauce that had just a hint of heat and was much better than the usual brown sauce. My wife and I ordered take-out. We ordered the crispy beef and the pepper chicken. I asked my wife what she thought before I told her what I thought and we both had the same comments about the food. The order was ready on time and the pick-up was fast. It was okay and seemed very similar to most American-Chinese take-outs. We both noticed that the food had a lot of oil. I could feel the oil on my lips as I was eating and I thought that was unusual. Crispy beef is one of our go-to items when trying new take-outs that offer it and it wasn't the best we've had...but not bad. We both have our favorite Chinese take-outs in other counties, but we're trying to find a place we both like a lot that is nearby. Unfortunately, this won't be the place. Great place for lunch. The prices are far less than others in the area. The portions are lunch-sized but filling. The service is the only reason I took off a star. It is obviously a small family-run business with the same staff every time we come in. The front staff are not unfriendly, but you usually have to ask for your beverage a few times. I recommend you order your drinks and food at once if you're there for a quicken lunch as the service if not very fast. Although there are only usually only 2 ppl working the front-- the chefs are ALWAYS cooking up magic in the kitchen. The food never disappoints. The fried rice, Thai rice, and lo mein never fail. Yet my go to is anything with their Szechuan string beans--they're heaven IMO. They server both Chinese food and limited menu of fresh sushi rolls. The location is small but very authentic and intimate setting. I have brought countless family and friends here. We agree the service could improve, but you come for the FOOD and the lunch prices can't be beat! The food was just okay. We ordered sushi, California roll, Thai Chicken Pineapple rice, Kung Pao Chicken, and Moo Goo Gai pan. The sushi was good, but the other stuff wasn't anything to come back for. It's hard to top the two Thai restaurants we normally go to, so probably a mistake to order a Thai dish and compare. Kung Pao was just okay, and the Moo Goo wasn't finished which never happens with my son unless he doesn't like it. Service was very good, quick, and efficient. The food came out pretty quickly too. Probably won't go back if there is another choice. We prefer Lee's Kitchen, but that's only a carryout. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about Gourmet Asian Bistro (7224 Muncaster Mill Rd, Derwood, MD 20855). It offers Chinese, Thai, and sushi. I've eaten there 3 times in the past 2 weeks, and it's been excellent every time and affordable! The vegetable tofu soup ($2.95) is huge, satisfying, and full of veggies. The wonton soup ($2.95) has 3 good sized wontons. Both soups come with a bowl of tastier-than-average fried wonton strips on the side that I end up munching on during the entire meal. The sizzling black pepper beef ($16.95?) was tasty, but I was more impressed by the noodle dishes. The beef chow fun ($14.95?) and the Singapore mei fun ($13.95) were beautifully seasoned and cooked perfectly. I've also gotten the salmon nigiri ($5.95?) a couple times, and it's generously portioned and fresh with great quality salmon. Every meal ends with a complimentary tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream and fortune cookie. There are plenty of good Chinese restaurants in MoCo, but Gourmet Asian Bistro is my current favorite for best flavor and value. read more

It's all about finding what you like here. The orange veggie chicken was decent. The sauce was spot on but the veggie chicken was too sweet. Like it was a fried donut in the orange sauce The Kung pao tofu was really good. Tofu was very crispy. The flavors were great. Lots of chilis but it wasn't spicy. The chow fun with chicken could use more flavor. Good portion size lots of noodles with a decent amount of chicken. But that's all it had. Maybe some broccoli, or carrot or something else and I added soy sauce to get more flavor in it. The sesame chicken was spot on. No complaints there. It's really about finding that really amazing dish here that fits your taste. Not everything is great imo but the place is good. read more

Neighbors in a Facebook group have been talking about Gourmet Asian Bistro. I had to stop off at UPS and figured might as well try since it's next door. Took about 10 minutes for carryout. Godzilla roll cause Kayla at UPS said it was her favorite. It's good. It is all cooked though. I swapped spicy mayo for the eel sauce. Will try something else next time. Crab Rangoon cause I'm a sucker for it when I see it on the menu. I think it's cause my parents never had it when they owned Tung Bor or Good Fortune. This one is OK. I could do without the bell peppers inside. But they do look nice all fried up. Vietnamese spring rolls... I ordered this cause the photos I've seen showed it's not the typical spring roll wrapper. They use a wheat flour wrapper! These were tasty. It's supposed to be pork, but looks more like chicken. Could taste taro which is great! Wish they served it with some lettuce though. After finding the food at Gourmet Asian Bistro to be just okay, not sure why we decided to visit again but we did. I remember the sushi being best food we ordered, so I thought I'd be okay. Wrong. Ordered a salmon/avocado roll and Philly roll, as well as a salmon skin hand roll. The rolls were tiny, cut unevenly, and not rolled tightly. Fish was fresh thankfully. Hand roll was a bust. Not rolled tightly at all so there was no way I was able to pick it up. Salmon skin was not crispy at all. Probably the worst I've had what a disappointment. I also tried some of the beef fried rice which was totally bland. Never again. read more

When it comes to American-style Chinese food, there is one dish that makes or breaks a carry-out place, and if you're a devotee of that delicious, concoction, you know that it's very difficult to find a satisfying iteration ANYWHERE. There's always some place that USED to make it well - you loved it in fact, but then they went cheap and skimped on the best meats, or the cook changed, or the management changed. That dish is General Tso's Chicken. When it's done well, it's divine. When it's not done well, it's a crime against humanity. Gourmet Asian Bistro makes the very best GTC I have encountered in the DMV in the past 20 years. I live 20 miles away, but when I am up in Olney or going for a hike at Rachel Carson, that's where I'm going to be going afterwards. A great menu generally, but their GTC is divine, and it's not even worthy trying another place. Go there, buy it, eat it, and experience this truth firsthand. 5 year check in! It's such a relief and delight when you have a favorite place that doesn't decline as time goes on. You can tell the family that runs this restaurant believes in the quality of their food and service! As my previous reviews mention, online ordering is a breeze. You absolutely cannot beat the value of their lunch choices. Whichever combination you choose: entrée with soup and egg or spring roll, bento box, sushi combos- the portions are always generous and you couldn't even cook this yourself for the price! I usually can't finish a lunch special in one go, which means I have something else to look forward to again later haha For not being a dedicated Thai or Sushi restaurant, these dishes are still so good in addition to their wide variety of American Chinese; everything is so well made! [Spicy Girl roll (if you want a little fried sushi) & Rock n Roll roll, if you want a little avocado, fish and crunch, are some of my absolute favorites and I haven't seen these exact combinations offered elsewhere]. Little details, like all white-meat chicken, really elevates dishes that sometimes come off too greasy for me other places. The quality and consistency of their cooking is what got us hooked and we've kept coming back ever since! During the pandemic they have been very careful and when you go to pick food up, there is a large divider between the table with menus where you pay and everything else, so no concerns there! I wish I could give a top rating, because the young staff members at the front were warm and friendly. Restaurant is larger than it appears from the outside storefront (Shopping center in Derwood with McDonalds). It has a older, traditional decor. They say they have an Asian fusion menu. Not many people were dining on a Friday early evening. I ordered carry out for myself. Wonton soup and garden salad. I'm on a diet plan. It didn't take very long. The garden salad was mostly lettuce with a few slices of tomato at the top of the container. And no other vegetables. Asian dressing has a normal flavor, but I really wanted to eat more than just lettuce. But yeah I realize you don't normally get salad at an Asian restaurant. The soup was also skimpy and disappointing. Very dark broth ( wonton soup lovers will want to know about color). It was tasteless. Only two measly wontons were floating in a container of broth. No strips of meat. The wontons were small and made of a thinner noodle, which I thought I would love. But alas they were mostly tasteless as well. Sigh...they get a 2 in quality this time. This spot never disappoints! We actually have never dined it but their takeout is ON POINT! All the directions are always followed properly and the food is deelish. I was wary at first because of the combination restaurant (serving Chinese, Thai, Japanese, etc) but I am blown away by every single cuisine they offer. Their sushi is appropriately priced, especially for what you get! And also most importantly- always freshhhhh! This place is a staple in our household and I've ordered out MANY times from here! We have been getting take out from this place for years. Lots of variety so there is something for everyone. We typically order Chinese food from here and it's always ready when we come, the portions are big and fresh tasting, and brown rice is an option. Lots of 'OK' dishes. The portions of fried rice was good, they give a lot but the rice itself wasn't that flavorful. Add a little bit of soy sauce and some spice and you're good to go. Mongolian beef was OK. Salmon roll was fresh, eel and cucumber roll was 90% cucumbers, the godzilla was good, volcano roll was OK but a little on the salty side.
