Chicken Pad thai and lomein
Stephan T. N.

I was in the area and, after reading some positive reviews, I decided to try this place for takeout. I ordered the chicken lo mein and the pad thai. Although the service was friendly and my order was ready quickly, the food was a letdown. Both dishes lacked flavor, and the noodles were really dry. I'm glad I don't live nearby because I don't plan on returning.

The egg roll seemed homemade and was fresh but on the small side. The sizes of many things have decreased these days. This food was pretty okay -- pretty good. The tea was pleasant. The service was good. They had fresh Chinese broccoli. I would have to try it again.

We ate here late one evening around 8:00pm and the service was fantastic, prompt, friendly and very attentive! Not because they wanted to go home though...lol. They let us and others stay until we were finished ordering! The sushi, hand rolls and their assortment of specialty rolls are outstanding. Nice ambiance, located inn a shopping center, nestled away so look close.

Singapore mei fun, sizzling black pepper beef, salmon nigiri, vegetable tofu soup

I have nothing but good things to say about Gourmet Asian Bistro (7224 Muncaster Mill Rd, Derwood, MD 20855). It offers Chinese, Thai, and sushi. I've eaten there 3 times in the past 2 weeks, and it's been excellent every time and affordable! The vegetable tofu soup ($2.95) is huge, satisfying, and full of veggies. The wonton soup ($2.95) has 3 good sized wontons. Both soups come with a bowl of tastier-than-average fried wonton strips on the side that I end up munching on during the entire meal. The sizzling black pepper beef ($16.95?) was tasty, but I was more impressed by the noodle dishes. The beef chow fun ($14.95?) and the Singapore mei fun ($13.95) were beautifully seasoned and cooked perfectly. I've also gotten the salmon nigiri ($5.95?) a couple times, and it's generously portioned and fresh with great quality salmon. Every meal ends with a complimentary tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream and fortune cookie. There are plenty of good Chinese restaurants in MoCo, but Gourmet Asian Bistro is my current favorite for best flavor and value.

LOOK HOW SMALL THIS IS!!! TINY Portion, size of a lean cuisine. The main dish isn't even full to the top. Disappointing. Won't be back.

Expensive. Food is pretty good but the lunch special portion for $10 was VERY TINY! About the size of a Lean Cuisine. Take a look at my photo. This tray was not even full! Won't be back.

It's all about finding what you like here. The orange veggie chicken was decent. The sauce was spot on but the veggie chicken was too sweet. Like it was a fried donut in the orange sauce The Kung pao tofu was really good. Tofu was very crispy. The flavors were great. Lots of chilis but it wasn't spicy. The chow fun with chicken could use more flavor. Good portion size lots of noodles with a decent amount of chicken. But that's all it had. Maybe some broccoli, or carrot or something else and I added soy sauce to get more flavor in it. The sesame chicken was spot on. No complaints there. It's really about finding that really amazing dish here that fits your taste. Not everything is great imo but the place is good.

Vietnamese spring roll, crab Rangoon and godzilla roll

Neighbors in a Facebook group have been talking about Gourmet Asian Bistro. I had to stop off at UPS and figured might as well try since it's next door. Took about 10 minutes for carryout. Godzilla roll cause Kayla at UPS said it was her favorite. It's good. It is all cooked though. I swapped spicy mayo for the eel sauce. Will try something else next time. Crab Rangoon cause I'm a sucker for it when I see it on the menu. I think it's cause my parents never had it when they owned Tung Bor or Good Fortune. This one is OK. I could do without the bell peppers inside. But they do look nice all fried up. Vietnamese spring rolls... I ordered this cause the photos I've seen showed it's not the typical spring roll wrapper. They use a wheat flour wrapper! These were tasty. It's supposed to be pork, but looks more like chicken. Could taste taro which is great! Wish they served it with some lettuce though. I'll be back to try more of the sushi and see what's on the Thai menu.

After finding the food at Gourmet Asian Bistro to be just okay, not sure why we decided to visit again but we did. I remember the sushi being best food we ordered, so I thought I'd be okay. Wrong. Ordered a salmon/avocado roll and Philly roll, as well as a salmon skin hand roll. The rolls were tiny, cut unevenly, and not rolled tightly. Fish was fresh thankfully. Hand roll was a bust. Not rolled tightly at all so there was no way I was able to pick it up. Salmon skin was not crispy at all. Probably the worst I've had what a disappointment. I also tried some of the beef fried rice which was totally bland. Never again.

First time I had a problem with the food. The shrimp fried rice was soggy and severely overcooked.

Pains me to revise my previous rating for Gyuzo, but had a horrible experience today…read more We opted for the premium AYCE and were excited to try everything. We ordered some app, sushi, and a ton of meats. The sushi was so/so the ikura was a bit fishy/not the freshest, but I gave it a pass since it was included in the AYCE. The fried lotus was surprisingly my favorite non meat dish. Our friend rice was served lukewarm (the consistency of rice was a bit uneven like older rice that was left out for a bit) and way too oily so we had to send it back. Had no issues with the meat and service - although it was a tad slow and the 10 minute cooldown between ordering was unexpected. Our server was great and kept checking in with us. A few items we ordered never made it out to us, but at that point we were too full to care. My main complaint was with one of the hosts. We finished our meal and thanked our waiter and made our way back to the parking garage. From behind, we heard a very loud "EXCUSE ME." We originally thought we had dropped something and someone was looking out for us, but was appalled when she followed us halfway across the street and said "you think you're just going to leave without paying for your mocktail?" That was hands down the rudest I've been treated by a customer service based establishment. I've worked in hospitality and know you should never accuse a customer of anything. To make matters worse, she got the wrong people - we never ordered a mocktail. Will likely not return to Gyuzo for a while and stick to other bbq places with better service.

It was really popular that evening, so the three of got squished at the table meant for two, but we didn't mind. The menu is pretty extensive, offering ramen, udon, tonkatsu, rice bowls, grilled fish sets, and more. We ordered pretty quickly, but with how busy it was, it took a bit for the food to come out CHILEAN SEA BASS - 37 As I scanned through, my eyes immediately fell on the miso sea bass. Despite the price point, I knew I had to go for it because sea bass is hard to find around here. This set came with rice, house salad, miso soup, and cold tofu. The sides were pretty standard -- no compliments, but no complaints either. On the other hand, the sea bass was wonderful. Super creamy and soft, with a strong miso sweetness that packed so much umami upon each bite. I would definitely splurge on this set just for the sea bass. My friend got the ramen and didn't love it, so I'll probably avoid that during future visits. The katsu curry that the table next to us ordered looked and smelled amazing. Overall, food was delicious and homey. I'd definitely recommend!

Cutest hole in the wall!!…read more Authentic Japanese food on Rockville Pike. Never knew what I was missing... their sushi seriously tastes like it was made with love. Absolutely floored by the fatty tuna sushi roll. It is on the pricier side, but honestly, I don't think I even minded. We got the katsu and sashimi combo plus some rolls on the side. The katsu was delicious, and the sashimi was super fresh. The combo also came with the cutest little side dishes, really adorable presentation overall. The staff was also incredibly attentive about my friend's allergies (dairy and nuts). They kept checking in with us and even showed us the sauce ingredients to make sure everything was safe. One of the staff members called my friend "kawaii" after hearing her long list of allergies lol, and honestly, that made my day.

Kanpai is in a prime place along Rockville Pike, but depending on when you go you may find easy parking. (If you're not bothered about where to park, ignore what I just said.) Out front there's something that looks like a tuk-tuk or rickshaw. Tbh, don't know if it's theirs or the business next door. The restaurant itself is clean and elegant. Also, not as loud as some Korean BBQs (thinking of KPOT off of Randolph Rd), which is important if you don't like being overwhelmed by everyone else's noise. That is one big '+' in Kanpai's favor. The waiter was cool and very helpful. Because of him I now know what the thin meat slices are meant for (which is for the soup), before then I had no clue. The food itself is good. Like, why wouldn't it be? I actually prefer the shabu-shabu (soup), makes me wish I knew how to do that myself so I wouldn't have to go out as much. Yes, the grill meats were great, as was the kimchi. These places are not cheap, but it was enjoyable while I was there. If you're not in a rush you can go a few doors down afterward to an import store selling everything from K-chips to puzzle-kits. So I would say...take your time. But don't warm your seats for more than 90 minutes, as Korean BBQs tend to kick people out (nicely, nicely) if one overstays. P.S. I'm sure they have some great drinks there, but even if I wanted to I couldn't loiter. That's what Bethesda is for. (Or at least how it used to be.)
