Don't even bother ordering through the website. Placed my order and received confirmation at 6:37pm. Called the restaurant at 8:00PM because food had yet to be delivered and was told they never got the order because the printer was not working. Are you serious?!?! When I explained to the person that I received an email confirmation that the order was placed, they proceed to tell me it is not their website. What do you mean it's not your website when that is where I placed the order!!!!! Proceeded to tell me it would be another 20 minutes. Absolutely ridiculous. Ok, it's hard to find a decent Chinese takout place when you're picky. That being said, I really like the Hunan Kitchen. I'd probably order from them more if I lived in their delivery radius, but I'll still go pick this stuff up. They even write your order down in Chinese, and the crew behind the counter is always friendly and on top of things. My standard order is the sweet and sour pork with a side of steamed dumplings. I don't usually stray because it's really good. Last night I tried the pork lo mein, and now I'm torn. I don't know what I'll order next time. Both are so good, and they give you mega portion sizes. The won ton soup is also very good (especially when recovering from a cold). The space inside isn't huge, but has a couple booths and some tables to sit down at. The parking area is ample, and the location can be a bit tough to find since they're tucked away across the street from Home Depot. It's worth the trip to the Hunan Kitchen though. read more

Did a delivery order though GrubHub and waited an hour and 20 minutes. Called the restaurant and the guy wasn't even paying attention to me. After listening him to talk to his coworkers for 5 minutes, I asked where my food was. He asked me for my address AGAIN. Then tells me their fax machine is down (fax machine??!? Really?!?!) so they never got my order. Then, tells me he can't give me a refund and I have to go through Grubhub. Horrible! Will never go here again! read more

This is probably some of the better American-Chinese I've had in this area, but not perfect. Ordered the Crispy Shredded Beef, Kung Pao Chicken, egg rolls, and crab rangoons. The beef was tasty, if a bit tough and chewy at times. The chicken was crispy on the outside like I like, but the only vegetable other than some stray onions was something that resembled chopped up broccoli stem rather than the celery and carrot I was expecting. Crab rangoons were as you would expect. Egg rolls were a little chewy. Not bad. I'll probably go back and try them again. read more

I have ordered food from here a few times since it is near my apartment and it is fine. They have lots of coupons and you can get free fried rice with an order over $20 which is awesome. The delivery service is decently fast (around 30 minutes) and portions are generous. It is always hot when it arrives too which is a huge plus and it is not too expensive. I've been a full supporter of this restaurant until today -- I live exactly 3 miles away from here! & they've been very good to me (until today) -- I usually order online and the food is really good. But today I this went extremely south! Order online & paid -- it was coming out my credit card. Fine no worries business as usually. The driver shows up to tell me that I live further than expected (which is a huge lie because I order here all the time) they charged my card more money than what it said online. Mind you the delivery is free to my house! (Never had this issue before) They fraudulently charged more on my card without even a notification to me that they were doing so! I would have loved a phone call explaining the situation but no not even a phone call they added extra ridiculous charges. And when calling the restaurant and the bank (who also explain that is fraud) they restaurant then tells me I can just call the police and the only way they would be refunding is if I give the food back! -- Customer service today was the damn worst. Just pure awful. I did file a report as well a report with the bank and will be waiting on refund. With how much money I've spent with them in the past I'm sick that this is what is happening now. Had not tried them before but wanted to check them out. The order arrived quickly, (before the scheduled arrival time), and was well packed and fresh. I ordered Egg plant; my experience has been at best mixed from other restaurants, so my expectations were not terribly high. I can say, without exaggeration, that this was the best Egg Plant I have ever received from a Chinese Restaurant. It was perfectly prepared, and had the perfect balance of spices. My family and I have been searching for a closer Chinese takeout location.. well atleast I have. While one sibling went to five guys and the other went to tropical smoothie in the shopping center, I decided I wanted chinese. I ordered the kung pao chicken and the egg drop soup. The chicken was tender and I enjoyed the celery and peanuts. The egg drop soup was just normal nothing special. I wish they had a dinner combination platter but the prices are fair and you get a lot per order. I think I'll be ordering from here when I'm in the area. I hate to do this.... Hunan Kitchen was my favorite Chinese takeout for years, from about 2002-2011. Fast forward to today. I don't know what happened here but the quality of the food has gone waaaaay downhill. The dishes that used to be flavorful, or spicy, or savory, are now bland and largely flavorless. I am not writing this review from a one time bad experience. I try to order from this place whenever I'm in the Annandale/Alexandria area, but the last few times have just been meh. I think they may have changed owners (and cooks). The very sweet woman who used to work behind the counter is gone. They still deliver the food pretty quickly and are reasonably priced, but there are better options for Chinese in the area. Like I said earlier, this place was my favorite. Stopped by here today with my Wife for Lunch, and wished we hadn't. We had ordered the Lunch Combos, she had the Sesame Chicken while I had the General Tso Chicken. While waiting, one of the people working there bring my Wife a cup of Tea while I had a cup of water. The water in teh styro cup tasted like the cup! Our orders come, and started to eat. The General Tso Chicken had no Chili Peppers in it, and it was on the bland side. My Wife said the same thing about her lunch as well. I don't know what type of people are working in there, but it's not Chinese! I didn't hear the usual yelling in Chinese coming from the back everytime an order is placed, not sure what it was. We miss the old owners of this place, and wish they would come back and have the food smell and taste like it use to. I hope that the people owning this place will realize and step up the quality of the food. Really great Chinese food is my weakness, it truly is. Particularly fried rice and wings...don't judge me. This is by far the best Chinese food in the area HANDS DOWN! Believe me when I tell you that I've tried them all. I received a menu in the mail and got home a little later than normal so I decided to order takeout and since I had their menu and I never tried before I figured why not. One of the best decisions ever! The fried rice is delectable. It's cooked perfectly and the ingredients taste fresh. Ask for bean sprouts. Gluten Free: Avoid soy based sauces (which includes the garlic sauce for the newly initiated, noodle dishes, & fried/battered dishes I've tried eating here Gluten-Free but I never managed to get them to understand the whole no gluten/wheat/barley thing. By the time I learned the acceptable Chinese dishes, I had already out-grown Chinese take-out (compared to Thai/Vietnamese/Korean.... not as flavorful). As such, this is a non-Gluten Free review. This place is as basic as you can get for a cheap chinese take out restaurant. You have some red chinese dragon banners around the kitchen door and a Maneki Neko (lucky cat) on the counter. There's free self-service hot tea and filtered water. If you decided to eat in, you can choose where to sit and if you want a drink you can just grab it from the cooler. There are styrofoam cups next to the hot Tea canister & they will place styrofoam plates down at the table for you. The silverware is plastic if you choose to use them instead of the chopsticks. I got their Garlic Chicken with white rice before I realized they had the option of brown rice. The garlic sauce isn't too watery nor to thick nor in abundance. It's more like the chicken and vegetables were stir-fried in the sauce with most of the sauce left behind when they were taken out (as opposed to soaking in the sauce). It makes the chicken and vegetables more flavorful without being overwhelmed by the sauce. They do give you more than the mini-pint of rice which is a nice change and the chicken to vegetable ratio is decent. There are a lot of onions though, just be forewarned. In all, it's very decent cheap Chinese take-out, with fast, friendly service and decent food. If you are Gluten-Free, you need to be very knowledgeable about how chinese dishes are made before you order. They have some pretty decent lunch specials that go until 4 as well as some "healthy" options that are all steamed. read more

The people here are super sweet. I usually order carry out but today decided to eat the food here. They always come around to offer tea and ice water. The food is consistent and seasoned well. I never have to add extra salt or soy sauce. The fried rice has the wok smell like it should. The portions are generous and ingredients are fresh. Regardless of how many entrees we order, they always offer rice according to the number of people. Unlike most places, they don't charge extra for additional white rice. read more

Disappointing. I asked them to make my chicken with broccoli in garlic sauce really spicy. They barely spiced it up I mean just follow the instruction that your customer gives you. There was no sauce in the box and the broccoli was just steamed not tossed in the sauce was just laying on top. The chicken was dry. The rice had good fried rice flavor but it didn't have enough onions, no mix veg, no eggs. So I won't be coming to this place again. There was a reason why I drive 5 extra minutes to my other spot this place is just walking distance. It's worth the drive. read more

I was happy to frequent this restaurant once it opened again. I never had any complaints before the pandemic. I've tried it twice since it's opened and both times the food was very disappointing. The food lacks flavor and fried items are over fried. The dumplings don't even look like dumplings. See my photo. The dough is very very thick, so gross to chew and not tasty. The fried wonton was over fried. The meat on the inside looked so dry. See my photo. The crab rangoon with cheese was not as over fried as the fried wonton. One of the crispy spring rolls was over fried and not flavorful. I called the restaurant to tell them my experience. I told the manager the food has changed, it's not as flavorful as before and some of the fried things are over fried. Apparently he wasn't interested because as soon as I said I'm not sure I'd return, he sort of grunted alright or OK and hung up. You would think he would want to keep a long time customer and want to know what was wrong with my food. No apologies. All I needed to hear is I'm sorry about the food and we will try to address your concerns. Maybe he pays more attention to the Yelp comments. read more

This is one of those places where you have to find "your dish" - because as soon as you do, you'll fall in love and order it every time! I noticed while waiting for my food based on the interaction between them and customers, they seem to have satisfied repeat customers. It took about 10 mins from the time I ordered to cook my food. I was here on a Fri around 5pm. Hot and sour soup- two sizes ($1.95/$4) flavorful broth and spicy. It has the usual tofu, mushrooms, and bamboo shoots Chicken with broccoli -($10) savory brown sauce a bit on the sweet side worked well with the main ingredients.
