Old spot that definitely needs some updating and refreshing. The place definitely needs a deep cleaning. It's dimly lit and very quiet. No music or anything going on. The staff is friendly, but don't come check on you very often. The food is ok. The wonton soup needed extra salt for sure and was lukewarm. I was a regular of this place since the late 80's but the owner sold out to some young kid who fired the chef and its all been downhill ever since. This place WAS the best chinese food in the city until it got sold out. The new owner has destroyed this place. The food is salty, overcooked and is now poor to average at best. I cried after I saw how badly the new owner had destroyed this previously incredible restaurant. The service is poor and reckless. And the prices have recently climbed. THIS IS BAD QUALITY CHINESE FOOD THAT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE SUPERB QUALITY IT USED TO BE. I've lived in NRH all of my life but have never been here before. My family came in on Christmas Day. While the place is disorganized and really needs updates, it wasn't dirty like some reviews have mentioned just messy. There was also no background noise so it was eerily quiet when we were there. We ordered a seafood plate, Empres chicken, house orange chicken and lo mein noodles. It was all really tasty. Jumped in the car, ordered a couple of straight forward items and waited in the lobby. Beef fried rice was a generous serving and they remembered to add the broccoli that I requested ($2). Egg roll was crispy and warm but a bit small and the Hot and Sour soup was hot and tasty...they even remembered the little chips to add. Had enough rice for a second meal. While I was waiting, looked around the lobby and noticed lots of boxes and extras of many items, containers and such. It had a good flavor. It also had 2 (two) pieces of shrimp. A little meat, and little more chicken. An honest number, is 65-70 % water chestnuts. I like water chestnuts. This is the first time in 30 years I had to give Hunan Wok a bad review. We used to eat here on a weekly basis we would dine in, have it delivered, and anytime there was a birthday we would come here to celebrate. The owner Tim would recognize my phone number and ask "The usual?" Then it was delivered; hot, fresh and delicious every time. Since Tim left it has slowly been going downhill, then tonight will be out last time to say goodbye. My egg drop soup was warm, not hot, the egg rolls were warmer but not hot, my entree-triple delight was not very hot either and the sweet tea not great either so I opted for a Dr. Pepper. There was 1 couple besides us, the table remained dirty for nearly 30 minutes and still not cleaned off when we left. But the kicker was this mess in the corner, right behind our booth. Why did we stay? Part of me wanted to leave but the other part wanted to stay because Hunan Wok has been a big part of our family for years. My husband and I pulled into the parking lot on Thursday to hit our regular place and all we could smell was Hunan Wok so I looked at my husband and asked if he had been there before and he said the place has been there 30 years plus. Any place that has survived that long must be good so away we go. When you walk in it's pretty dated and dark. We were sat at a booth and promptly brought menus. I was happy to see the menu was separated by proteins. You have your choice of Chicken, pork, steak or seafood. There were two other couples besides us but it filled up right after we sat down. My husband got the garlic chicken with a side of steamed rice and I opted for chicken fried rice. The garlic chicken was excellent! Tender chicken in a sweet, spicy sauce. Really good! The fried rice tasted burned and my husband said it was from too many white onions. I would not recommend it. The bill was less then $25 for two people and I would definitely go back for the garlic chicken. Next time I'd try the almond chicken. Worth a visit for sure. read more

Ordered chicken fried rice, beef lo mein, Mongolian beef, and house orange chicken. The Mongolian beef should have been described as onions with a hint of beef. As seen in the photos the entire take out dish was filled with onions. Extreme let down when you're paying for a dish of meat. Also what part of that photo looks like lo mein? Horrible Food and Horrible Service We got a flyer for this place and decided to give it a try, wishing now we hadn't!! Orange chicken was 3 pieces of actual meat and the rest was breading crumbles that were burnt, orange peel an peppers lots and lots of peppers....hard to call that an entree let alone an edible meal!! Sesame Chicken had chunks of meat to my suprise, but it being dry meat that the breading an flavor was drown out by all the water in the bottom of the container from the steamed broccoli. This place has been around as long as I can remember, and they always do a nice job. There just are not enough dine-in Chinese restaurants. Service here is always polite & efficient. The pupu platter is a good sampler of their appetizers, and the tea (hot or iced) is the best around. We always order the pupu, and the first thing everyone goes for is that little foil packet with the meat inside. I don't know what it is called, but it is to die for. we did our family Chinese Christmas dinner here the last two years. The only detractor this year was that it tasted like maybe their fryers were not hot enough (some of the items came out a wee bit greasy. They have a pretty vast menu. Haven't eaten at this restaurant in a few years and decided to go for lunch today. I walked up to the building and there is plywood covering one of the windows and the front doors are so filthy. Then I walked into the entry and the floors are filthy and there is trash and debris all over the carpet. Then you are hit with a foul odor. It's obvious that the owners take no pride in this restaurant what-so-ever . If the exterior of the building and entrance is this disgusting I would hate to see the kitchen and restrooms. FANTASTIC Chinese restaurant conveniently located off 820 and Rufe Snow. My wife and I have been dining at the place for over 30 years. The quality of food has not diminished since our initial visit. Don't let the gruffness of the interior fool you as its the food that you are coming for. My wife ordered Sweet & Sour Chicken. It was crispy and crunchy even under the sauce (I ate a few when she wasn't looking). I had the Triple Delight (shrimp, beef & chicken with veges in a fabulous sauce). Egg roles are scrumptious & crispy and large. FYI: due to Covid they have changed their Lunch Menu to not include soup. A shame because their Egg Drop soup is also another winner with excessive amount of egg which is a good thing. HINT: if you don't want to dine in, do Take-Out. I would do this when I was traveling for business and pick up dinner on the way home from DFW Airport. I've decided to check this place out after driving past the location several times. So, I placed an togo order from the recommendations here on Yelp. I ordered General Tao's and a few Egg Rolls. How have I not reviewed this place?! I've been coming here since before I even moved to DFW. Memories of the summers when I would visit my sisters always come back when I come here to this day (many many moons ago). Since moving here, I became a regular and so have my younger siblings. There used to be a friendly gentleman who would always greet us so warmly when we came in to dine in or pick up to-go orders. He would always ask whoever came in how the others were doing. Since he left a few years ago, it has not been the same and we find ourselves coming in less frequently. As for the food, they have some dishes that I would definitely rank higher than others in the area. For example, their hot and sour soup is the best around, but I have found a better place for chicken and corn soup. I seriously only eat General Tso's chicken from here. Oh, and their fried rice is pretty awesome. It has bean sprouts in it and also that wonderful wok hei flavor that can't be beat. Other go-to dishes are beef and spicy sa-chia sauce, chicken with mixed veggies, stir fried string beans, and twice cooked pork. I shy away from the BBQ pork ribs and fried chicken wings now though, two former favorite appetizers. The interior has not really changed since I first started coming there. I've walked in and the first thing I see is the same big fish tank countless times. It's definitely outdated but does have a certain charm to it. Chinese decor and motif are throughout the inside and outside of the restaurant.
