Just ate here with my mom. I've been here before a long time ago. We shared the Ruben and the large chili. Both were very good. Lots of flavor in both and perfect ratios of ingredients. Before I get into the food portion of this review I have to comment on the Ambience. It is the most serene eye catching nerve calming experience I have ever had at a Deli. I'm not just hamming it up. You will relish every moment at this deli. It has cozy nooks, upstairs balcony seats, WiFi. Lettuce wrap about the food. Deli-cious is an understatement. My book club meets here for dinner often. Mostly because they are open 24 hours and when us girls get together, time flies! Their food is pretty good. I wish there were more options as I get the same thing everytime. The country ranch with chips and a slice of wheat sourdough. Nothing else really appeals to me. I also would love more side options other than chips or coleslaw. Fries would be a great addition! The service and atmosphere is usually a little odd. But this restaurant is known for that. I can try to overlook the oddness but sometimes the service is VERY slow. It takes like 15-20 minutes for a simple request. I can say that, all the times we have sat outside in the patio, the service has been better than when sitting inside. I do like the price point of the food and that this location is right next to the big parking lot in vista village. Came here on a Thursday night to order takeout and it was pretty busy! If you've never visited the restaurant, the place itself is super cool and a nice place to sit down and get work done. Lots of cozy spots. The workers are also very friendly! I recommend calling in for to go to make things quicker. Got the pastrami sandwich and I thought it was okay- a bit greasy and soggy for me in my opinion, but still tasted good. It came with chips and a pickle as well. Okay, but I mean this place has like the best sandwiches ever though. To back it up, this location of the Yellow Deli is over in downtown Vista. There's street parking and a decently sized parking lot right next to it. It's open 24-hours on Monday through Thursday. It closes at 3 pm on Friday and reopens at noon on Sunday. So mostly very convenient hours except the one time I tried to have lunch here on a Saturday. You see a lot of people randomly study here. It's very cute restaurant. It's also decently large with seating downstairs, upstairs and outside. It has a cozy, sort of rustic feel to it and music to match with it. All their food tastes very fresh. Their bread is amazing and their drinks are great too. The service can be kind of slow which I think is the main thing that weighs it down. They're pretty friendly though. Best waffle I've tasted and great maple syrup as well. They do all from scratch our server said. The wood work in the restaurant is very pretty. Oh and they have a lift! I have been a long standing (decade+) customer and wish I had found The Yellow Deli sooner. All urban legend aside, the atmosphere, the food, and the kindness are what keep me coming back. They bake their own bread! The sandwiches are incredible. My mom loves the classic Rueben, my daughter eats the Breakfast Sandwich with Pastrami that is sooo unctuous, and even though I'm omnivorous, I'm all about the Yellow Submarine (amazing bread, spread of the day, lettuce, sprouts, tomatoes, yellow peppers, and onions; usually with house made chips on the side and a pickle, but you can ask for veggies instead of chips- which veggies vary per day, but that's maximum vegetarian goodness on one plate). The fruit and nut salad is a go to every time (comes with a slice of walnut bread). Even if I don't eat it there, I almost always take one to go. We regularly order the chili (comes with a sort of sourdough slice of bread). The star of my show is The Deli Waffle with fruit. I literally crave it all the time. I will even eat the waffle at the same time as the chili. It's so delicious. I love the poached eggs (comes with wheat toast and jam and usually some tomatoes). Ask what the muffin of the day is. They are all good, but it's a rule: If it's raspberry, we have to get it. The food is soooo good. I promise. It's not a coffee house. They specialize in Maté, and if you like murky, bog water maté like I do, order the iced green maté- one for here and one to go. The hot apple cider is delicious with a sprinkle of cinnamon on it. If you consume dairy and enjoy bananas, get the banana milk. It is perfection. I have to let you know that if you don't want real butter you have to tell them because they butter the bread and waffle for you. I can't get enough. AND if you are ordering to go, order it at the same time as your dine in food for timing purposes. Onto atmosphere..... give me more! Macrame, apple baskets as light fixtures, rustic wood, a hand pulled dumbwaiter to bring food upstairs from the kitchen, fireplaces and fire pits with real wood, spiral staircase (and ADA elevator), a soundtrack like Disney's Frontierland. The staff are so kind. I will suggest you to eat a snack before you go. This is slow food and that is part of the charm. No one is in a hurry there except maybe you. This is not a space meant for large parties. I would say their largest organically shaped booth could seat 5-6 comfortably. No reservations. The Yellow Deli closes at 3pm on Friday, is not open on Saturday, and reopens at noon on Sunday. They are open noon to 1am on Sunday. Mon-Thurs 7am to 1am. Friday 7am to 3pm They also close for their religious holidays and festivals. If you have heard it's a cult, fine. But go see for yourself. Google it for that matter. There are over 30 locations worldwide. They are a community. I appreciate them for the magic, wholesome food they provide. There are pamphlets throughout the restaurant explaining their beliefs. There are murals with origin stories. I have never felt pressured by any member of The Twelve Tribes. However, if religion is cringe to you, please just allow the people who appreciate them to enjoy a loving meal without opinion. The vibe is perfect as it is. I came here for the first time the other day and unfortunately didn't have the best experience. My friend and I came to study so naturally we had our backpacks and appropriate technology. They were friendly enough upon arrival and the place seemed pretty clean throughout. The ambience was also cute with lots of places to sit outside in the shade. We had just ordered two drinks. When the server came to deliver our drinks she was carrying a tray of maybe around 6 drinks total, I'm assuming for the table next to us as well. However she tried to place the full tray on our table and tilted the tray as she was doing this and a hibiscus mate tea spilled all over me, my backpack, my phone and other technology that was on the table. Thankfully, my laptop and iPad were pretty much spared and I was able to clean my backpack because it was leather. But my phone was drenched and I had to walk around with a sticky foot the rest of the day. The restaurant staff cleaned the mess and apologized but I just can't give a good rating because it was just really unpleasant regardless. I hope the staff can get more training or how to maneuver with trays and maybe learn not to attempt to place a tray full of drinks on a table that has thousands of dollars worth of technology. It could have been worse but also just completely avoided with more training. Sadly, my phone isn't functioning as well as it used to with distorted audio. In the end, the drinks were just okay. A total find -- and turns out they have multiple locations, which means this is just the beginning. We tried the green tea chai, and wow... it was smooth, earthy, and surprisingly addictive. The breakfast sandwich was delicious -- like, genuinely satisfying without trying too hard. Then came the ginger cookie -- OMG. Soft, spicy, and just the right amount of sweet. You have two options for chili, a cup or a bowl. The BOWL is served with a small loaf of fresh baked Jalapeño bread and butter. (Please keep in mind this chili is LOADED with tender beef, big chunks) From my experience the service has been kind. Not over the top, but kind. Not FAST but not to complain about because the food is so fresh. They keep it simple. Do not go here if you expect extravagant service: not the place for you. I was brought here by my grandma originally, and I have been coming here ever since. I'm hooked! The food is absolutely delicious, the vibes are tavern meets hippie. I have mad respect for the iron and woodworking skills that went into crafting the entire building. Props for having gluten free bread - and it's actually delicious! My boyfriend (not celiac) tried the GF bread and actually prefers that to the regular bread, so he gets the GF one! It can take a hot minute to get your order and the check, but it's honestly such a vibe that you may enjoy the ambiance and your company (if you brought some).
