Went here for the first time today with the boyfriend. Food was delicious, we shared the frittata and the quiche, but we both showed symptoms of mild food poisoning a few hours later, with Hungry Ghost's food being the only thing we'd eaten. I agree with others re: the no laptop policy on the majority of the tables. What gives? Endless couples can parade in with multiple strollers, taking up the entire lounge area, but people who want to actually buy a cup of coffee and sit down to do work are relegated to three tiny tables, or an uncomfortable back bar? Complete bullshit. This will keep me from going back for sure. No only is the no laptop policy insulting, but the coffee is over piced for the quality, and so is the food. Too bad, really. Hungry Ghost is hands down my favorite coffee shop in New York. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, staff is very friendly and helpful, and pastries are delicious. But really, its about the coffee. The barristas always craft my drink with care and I enjoy every sip. My regular is the almond latte, I dream of this drink! read more

Great coffee shop. The coffee is great, and the treats are unreal! Especially the cookies. I was here on a Tuesday night and the place was more than half full with people with laptops. This is a super cute coffee shop in Fort Greene. I met a friend there recently for coffee. It took some maneuvering to get a seat for two, but once we did, all was well. There are only three tables for two, one one-seater couch and a bar table with six stools. This spot is intimate! But the vibes are good, perfect place to sit and people watch if you get a seat, or talk with a friend. read more

There staff here are super, and I love the no laptop seating policy, where at least half the seats are reserved for people without laptops. This ensures that there's there are enough available tables for people who want to drink their coffee there and go, as opposed to the laptop users who park all day. I will never come here again. The barista girl was so rude. She was unfriendly and the way she handed me my iced americano was just... ugh. I was here yesterday, 6/7/2019 around 6pm. Whoever the girl is didn't seem like she wanted to work. I hope you know that stuff like this will drive out customers. Great place, unique bake goods. I think they make most of them in house. Very comfortable, the staff is friendly and helpful. They do reserve some of the best tables for people without laptops, not good for me, but I understand why they do it. I only wish they would do the same with the "stroller mafia". They encourage people to park their strollers outside but don't require it. Very few of the mafia are willing to park it. All and all very nice and I go back often. read more

I skipped out of work during lunch to grab some new workout clothes at the Lululemon shop across the street, and asked the woman working there for a lunch recommendation. She directed me to the Hungry Ghost and I'm so glad she did! The sandwich I had was really good BUT I must say the cookies are AMAZING. Soft and delicious and there is a great selection. I have already gone back for more cookies. And the Stumptown coffee is delicious, and they make a pretty latte.... but there is just something about those cookies, I am totally addicted. Service is good and there is a good amount of space at this location. It has a good vibe to do work if you get a seat (but no outlets).The coffee is good but expensive. The reason I'm giving it a low review is because the egg sandwich I ordered was tasteless and oily. For 7$ at a somewhat trendy place I expected a lot more. Love this place! It is definitely my favorite, go-to cafe in the neighborhood. It is spacious enough and has a large wooden communal table, so finding a place to sit is hardly ever an issue. I love stopping by and am always greeted by warm, friendly staff who genuinely seem to enjoy what they do. The coffee drinks are delicious and well-prepared, and the quality of the beans is perfect. Add to that a mouth watering, delectable array of baked goods, and you've got yourself a very satisfied, definitely NOT hungry ghost. I cannot think of a single negative thing to say about this place, it's almost as good as it gets. read more

Made a quick detour here before work across the street from Barclay's Center. It's a quick 5 minute walk from there. I love this place and will most likely be making regular "quick detours" when I'm in the area. The ambiance is very calm and laid back and service is great. They are very speedy with the service which is important especially in the mornings. I tried their apple turnover pastry. The pastry dough was sooo good, but I wasn't feeling the filling... it was a little mushy for my liking. I'd probably still order it again though. The best thing about this place is that Stumptown coffee. Best coffee in town!!! Or at least in downtown flatbush anyway... read more

(3.5 Stars) Consistently good coffee in the perfect location (forming a corner of our favorite triangle that is BKLYN Larder, Bergen Bagels and Hungry Ghost, or "The Bagel Ghost's Larder") is a wonderful thing indeed. Hungry Ghost serves Stumptown and they prepare the coffee well - it is consistently smooth and delicious, which is refreshing considering how many coffee shops are able to ruin this noble bean. Furthermore, the pastry selection is great- their cookies are good, they serve Dough doughnuts and their scones aren't bad either. What's not to like? Regrettably, seating is usually an issue since it is limited to bar seating around the periphery (for those wishing to use their laptops), five smaller tables and a larger communal table, all of which fill up quickly. That said, if you're looking for your coffee to go, this is an great spot to caffeinate before grabbing a bagel and heading on your merry way in whichever direction you choose. Con's: There are many strollers (this is the border of Prospect Heights and Park Slope -- what exactly do you expect?) and so may not be the ideal spot to frequent with your copy of the Sunday Times for a three-hour stretch. It's also probably not the best place to grab a meal. However, as an honest-to-goodness place to grab a cup of coffee and go, there are definitely worse places (i.e. Gorilla Coffee on 5th Avenue). Conclusion: The staff is usually friendly, the space is light and airy, the coffee is good and it's in a convenient location. All of this ensures that Hungry Ghost will remain a neighborhood staple in our Brooklyn coffee ambles. This is not a spot where one schlepps unnecessarily (unlike Blue Bottle for their amazing New Orleans coffee) but it is a fine neighborhood spot. read more

The saga of the glaring B continues at the Hungry Ghost. What is going on world? Am I lover of restaurants/cafes that have B grades? Am I "that" person... you know the one that likes dirt in food. Oh the desi in me lives on. Today, I went to drop off Rustom (the dog) at Pup Slope. A place I dislike very much because they are not good to the animals. But, it was an emergency. Rustom "needed" a hair cut and no one else was available. I was mildly excited about going to Pup Slope only because it is right next to the Hungry Ghost. And....I LOVE the Hungry Ghost's coffee. I have lovely memories of walking approximately 3.45 miles to get here and then walking back and smiling most of the journey because the cappuccino was THAT good. D and I have long conversations debating the aesthetic and the exact level of peanut butter goodness in the cookies we order there. Then today happened. I saw the B grade. Ok, lets start off with the positives. The chai I ordered was amazing (they have their own special blend), the turkey panini was great and the price for both was reasonable (about $12). Friendly staff. However (and this is a BIG however!), this is not the place to go if you need to study or work, which is why I came. There is Wi-Fi, but no outlets for laptops and there are only 3 small tables where laptop use is permitted (you can also sit at the wall bar, but who wants to study or work sitting on a bar stool?! I tried it for about 20 minutes...and nah). Long review short, if youre picking up a quick sandwich and caffeinated beverage, meeting up with a friend or two for a fast lunch, etc...this is a cute spot to do so. The service is what I generally expect at any coffee shop manned by hipsters: detail oriented but not quite friendly. The coffee and pastries are definitely well made. However, even though there are two locations within walking distance of my apartment, I don't go here unless my head is about to explode from caffeine withdrawal. And that's because they serve Stumptown coffee. I realize I'm probably in the minority here (in Brooklyn at least), but I just find Stumptown too acidic. So even though the baristas do a good job, the coffee itself is just not for me. Most other people seem to dig it though, so definitely give it a shot. read more

It's true that I have never been enamored of this place but they just lowered the bar. It's certainly pretty in design, no doubt expensively, with wood and comfortable chairs, and the cashier was pleasant enough. They had neglected to post prices early on, and even now you need to search for the price in the wall. I clearly requested a small coffee and received and was charged for a large one. I didn't realize this until I went to put a cover on it. (Take away? They never put a cover in the cup. ) I suspect this overcharge happens often. Check your receipt. read more

I'm a huge fan of Hungry Ghost! Awesome furniture, decor, great coffee, nice selection of pastries! Super nice staff that are friendly. Alas, I'm not the only one who likes Hungry Ghost as it can get quite crowded, especially in peak hours (like after brunch on the weekend), which makes it a bit hard to find a seat. Which saddens me because this is certainly the type of coffee shop worth sitting in for a while! read more

I've only been here three times but each time was a pleasant experience. This coffee shop has a very simple, relaxed aesthetic. No clutter. I usually walk into coffee shops in this town and they're full of little antiques and postcards and perfumes. Not this place. Also the baristas have been quite friendly. No douchebag baristas, another thing I expect from a coffee shop around here. But the most important part about a coffee shop is the coffee. And Hungry Ghost delivers. They have fresh kegs of cold brewed iced coffee from Stumptown. I think it's called "Hair Bender" and it's the best iced coffee I've ever had. I drink it black and I never drink iced coffee black. I haven't had much of the food here but I do also recommend their chocolate croissant. Very tasty. read more

Great coffee, great paninis, great music, great atmosphere. The attitude of the baristas leaves you cold and is reminiscent of the Gorilla coffee workers before they all walked off the job. This place could be amazing if they could just smile and make you feel like they appreciate your business and your welcome to hang there. Be careful if you're going there to use your laptop. They prevent you from sitting at the tables and you have to sit at their bar which is uncomfortable and doesn't have many spots available. The wifi kicked out on me after an hour. (Not sure whether that was me or the cafe). This place has some things they could do to improve, but overall it's a really great addition to our neighborhood. read more

I had the Turkey CHeddar Bacon sandwich to go, and it was SO YUMMY! The bread was fresh and everything tasted great. The bacon had lots of flavor, and since it's sturdy bread, the sandwich lasted for my trip to the beach. Hungry Ghost is a great find, and I would definitely return. read more

I love the Hungry Ghost, I love to get a tea and a snack and sit down and knock out a couple of email and bounce. The service is always quick and friendly. I see a lot of negative reviews because its difficult to 'work' there. If you want an office space with free wifi at the price of a few cups of coffee in NYC then I have a bridge to sell you. You can do this but you have to get there early and set up shop but the spots are limited which seems fair to me. They need the other spaces for people that come in to get bigger plates with company. Most important to me as a long time resident of the area is that this is a locally owned spot. It cannot compete with Starbucks who can subsidize a large space for you to work for free at a loss. Thank god no chains have crossed Flatbush! If you're a real American you know that supporting small business is the right thing to do. read more

Very cool atmosphere..but disappointed coffee was all stumptown..its becoming ubiquitous. The mushroom panini was only ok...it was smothered in a balsamic and sun dried tomato spread..a little too much. Otherwise ingredients were pretty fresh. Only wish there were more interesting choices on the drink and food menu. read more
