FUCK THIS PLACE. They just disrespected the fuck out of me for absolutely no reason. I came into this place, was sitting there for almost an hour, minding my own damn business not bothering a SOUL. I was very dehydrated and decided to stop here to get some air conditioning, cool off and get some work done. The employees were very friendly at first (nice enough to give me the WiFi password) but then things took a turn for the worst. I guess because I was dehydrated and did not want to purchase a $5 coffee (I wanted ICE WATER obviously), they were very offended. Like I said, after being there for almost a damn hour, the power tripping manager took it upon himself to approach me and tell me if I wanted to use the WiFi I would have to purchase something. I told him I will just disconnect and use LTE. Then he really got upset and told me I had to LEAVE unless I bought something. I have never been to a coffee shop that goes out of their way to single people out who are not bothering anybody and make them feel that unwelcome. I did not harm anyone in here, I literally sat in a corner with my backpack. The only service they did for me was give me ICE WATER which is FREE. I would not recommend this coffee shop to anyone, there are much better options in the Park Slope area. The people here are absolute assholes. I was so livid that I actually came back and pulled the manager aside and talked to him one and one and told him he was deadass wrong. He then had the audacity to say "I was nice to you, so you should be nice to me". How the fuck is kicking me out for minding my own business nice sir?! Do not support this place. I'd rather go to Starbucks. Never been to a coffee shop that has this asinine "policy" that is NOWHERE posted inside. It would of been one thing if I brought outside food or beverage in, but this was unacceptable and not okay. The manager is a total asswipe. read more

I live right around the corner and have been coming to Hungry Ghost regularly since it opened. I'm a big fan of the decor of the place. It's a good place to go get some work done on your laptop, especially later in the day when you don't have to wait for a laptop table. I appreciate that there are tables where laptops are prohibited, as it prevents the place from being clogged up by laptop users. Service has always been excellent. The baristas are very amicable, and have great taste in hats. The coffee is delicious, both hot and iced. I've never had a bad cup. All of the pastries that are made on premises are great -- I'd recommend the maple walnut scone, with a sweet glaze (they tend to run out of these!) and the chocolate chip cookies. And, they've got kombucha on tap! read more

The nicest staff in a coffee shop in the neighborhood, great coffee, and lovely natural wood aesthetic. Became a stalwart fan after being yelled at numerous times by the staff at another local coffee shop when HG first opened. Sadly I've been traveling and haven't been in recently, but this is absolutely my favorite coffee shop on this end of Prospect Heights/Park Slope:) oh! And the pastries are awesome too.... You should try this apricot croissanty-thing, it's in an almond custard of some sort and was the most sublime pastry I've had in at least the last year... OH!, I love Hungry Ghost! Everything is delicious and most importantly coffee is made perfectly/professionally , people who work there are nice and welcoming. I LOOOOOOVE that you can't seat everywhere with the laptop. It is so annoying seeing all these coffee places with bunch of crowd staring at their screens, I really hate that. It kills the joy of a hang, conversation and coffee culture in generaly (btw I am a programer and in front of a comp a loooot). So, how Hungry Ghost dealt with that issue is amazing. I also like how it's not stuffed with chairs, so it's airy and in generally so comfortable. I don't mind at all if I have to wait for a seat, which btw didn't happen yo me jet and i am there few times every week at different hours. So ...yeah I am very happy to have this place...just perfect. Good coffee and baked goods, but I felt like a bull in a china shop both times I went there. I got nasty looks from other customers for unzipping my backpack and for switching to a more comfortable seat/better lighting. It's not a good place to study if that's what you're looking for. The place is small, cute, air conditioned, and the front and bathroom doors are awkwardly located with respect to the rest of the layout. Atmosphere is noisy and chaotic, the community table is both intriguing and reminds me of a science laboratory given the space set up. I'd say don't go out of your way, but if you need a bright place to chill for a bit, sans-wifi/sans-electricity access, and grab a hot or cold coffee/tea drink, or a sandwich, stop in. expect to see lots of young hipster offspring. service is low key, and they also have been and wine. about 0.01% diversity among clientele/staff. read more

I work near the Hungry Ghost in Brooklyn, but never had the time to go there. Went to get lunch for a group of co-workers and we all ordered sandwiches as take out. It was the best sandwich I have had in a long time. You the the old saying, I cant believe I eat the hold thing. We ordered the Turkey, Bacon Chedder, Tomato Lettuce and Chipotle Mayo, the Turkey, Smoke Gouda, Baby Spinach and Sun-dried tomato and the Classic grilled cheese. They were all great! Been coming here since it opened and it used to be great. Either management changed hands or they are just too focused on their new bar to care cause now this ghost is not just hungry, he's sad too. They have all these rules about what kind of coffees they will and will not make. The service is SO pushy. They clearly want you out of line and out of their face. Fast service doesn't have to be frantic service. The guys that opened it used to talk to you and remember that you lived in the neighborhood. I've worked in the food service industry for almost a decade and the SERVICE is what's missing here. People are particular about how they take their coffee, it's their morning ritual and they chose (out of the 15 coffee shops in the area that are practically identical) to share it with you. Coffee: Been in twice, their wet cappuccino really hit the mark for me both times. I'm in! The Vibe: Staff are sweet. Was in on a packed Saturday afternoon and an easy Thursday morning - a relaxed vibe on both visits (including the buzzy weekend day). Talk vs. Work Culture: It's the right of a business to assert the type of culture they wish to purvey. Hungry Ghost clearly does not want to be a cafe packed with workers, and prefers to be a talking cafe. A talking cafe makes for community hubs and lap-top free breathing space. Pretty important. Laptops are actually welcome (yes there is free Wi-fi), but with clear restrictions. They are taking responsibility for identifying themselves as a talking place by providing signage prohibiting laptops on half the tables. Take a look before attempting to camp out, outlets are not provided. Workers are welcome, but be prepared and head over already charged up and/or work unplugged. read more

A comfortable, laid-back place to get your morning coffee, and enjoy tasty fresh-baked pastries and desserts or fresh sandwiches and salads. If you're reading this, you already know what Stumptown Coffee is and have your opinions about it. I happen to like it, but I'm easy to please. I haven't really sampled the espresso drinks, so can't speak to those. The almond croissants are the best I've had in the neighborhood, with the airiness of croissants that have just been baked and haven't been sitting around for hours, and they're not overly sweet like they sometimes can be. Hungry Ghost also serves something which is a rarity these days - peanut butter cookies. And they're good! - big, chunky, peanut buttery things that taste like real peanut butter, and not sugar cookies that someone has added a teaspoon of Skippy to and decided to call a peanut butter cookie. My guess is that peanut butter cookies are scarce these days because of concern about peanut allergies. I feel bad for those who are allergic to peanuts; however, I'm happy to see at these are on the menu here. As others have discussed, there's a big communal table up front from which laptops have been excluded. Speaking as one who enjoys his own laptop, I don't mind this policy. There are other places inside to use laptops, and much of the time, those spots actually are filled with people using their laptops (or the occasional tablet/keyboard combo). So it's nice that there's a place reserved for other things. I like to read at the big table, and others do as well. I've also seen people writing on paper tablets, with actual pens! Aside from reading and writing, it's a place where people can come by themselves or in groups to eat and drink what they've just ordered, and chat, without the familiar clickity-clack of typing/surfing. And sometimes a stranger may lean over and ask a question, and the laptop lids won't be in the way. And no, it's not a return to a pre-laptop Golden Age where we all clasp hands, sing folk songs, and go off to collect apples afterwards, but it's nice, and does feel a bit more organic than coffee houses which are laptop and smartphone farms. (NB: people do occasionally pull out their smartphones at the table, but somewhat furtively.) The natural light streaming in from the big windows fronting Flatbush is also a nice touch. I love Hungry Ghost. i've been there many times now and they consistently have good coffee and pastries. The staff is friendly, they play good music and the cafe itself has a nice look. They have a great communal table, and decent amount of seating. Some of the seating is "laptop free" which is a fair policy. Seating can be a little tricky to secure at peak times on weekends, but really not too bad, especially compared to other coffee shops in the area. The pecan bars are amazing. Try one! read more

Stumptown is not my favorite when it comes to espresso. Nothing bothers me more when the shot is perfect, milk is perfect and the espresso is just...drab and boring., which stinks because I really love to get work done at the ghost from time to time. When I do go I get a ginger cookie ASAP! Then I worry about the rest later. To follow up the cookie I either have tea or choose from what's on tap! The coolest aspects of this place: Kombucha and cold brew on tap! And the artwork on the walls is awesome and it is hard for me not to just gaze upon it. The chairs in the window are also great, reall playing into the artwork: very futuristic yet barnyard old...i dunno, but I love it! It's not a place that allows for much socializing at most times because the music is blasting and there really isn't much room when huge study groups take up the bulk of seating. Hungry Ghost?...How about Angry Ghost! This place is all attitude very little gratitude. The thing that bothers me besides the surly baristas, who have something against anyone who speaks, is that they have a $5 minimum on cards. What?! I mean, I want a cup of Stumptown coffee in my to go mug and I want to pay with my debit card. I do not want one of their semi alright looking pastries. And I know they don't have a standard card reading system. It is one of the ones that is used on the iPad. I am pretty sure if there is a fee they are paying it is nominal and as they are located in Park Slope and are always crowded I chalk it up to old fashion greed! So aside from the awesome quality coffee, which they have nothing to do with aside from buying it, I give Angry Ghost two big thumbs down!!! read more

Coffee is fine (not the best, but pretty good - The Annex (nearby in Fort Greene) has stronger coffee, but not much seating). Lots of space. I don't know what all the grumbles are (in other reviews) about the staff. They have always been über-friendly, and I've been in here 50 times (based on the number of times I have filled up my "buy 10, get one free" coffee cards). I come almost daily and while I wish they had outlets to plug in my various devices, I also think it's smart because it allows for a greater chance of finding a seat in what would otherwise be a very crowded place. They have good coffee and a wide selection of baked goods. They also have good sandwiches for lunch - my fave is the chicken panini. No outlets! A coffee shop without outlets doesn't make any sense to me. There actually was one in the corner-- with a note over it that read something along the lines of "NOT FOR YOU". So that was nice. Everyone who worked there was super friendly, and the coffee got the job done, so as a place to grab a quick cup it's fine. Love this place. I am a regular here. Coffee - Stumptown. Enough said. Baked goodies - One word: Yum. There are vegan options too. Atmosphere - Nice interior decor. Love the Serge Mouille lamp. Service - Friendly staff. Good looking but not snobby. Wifi - Nice and strong. The only downside is that it is so hard to secure a seat. Especially the ones that let you use laptops. At some point I gave up on bringing my laptop to this place, because it's so hard to secure those three prized seats. But that doesn't stop me from going to this place. read more
