For Valentine's Day he wanted to take me out to eat at a nice restaurant, but knowing his favorite dessert is Hungry Hobo chocolate cake, I decided to order 2 pieces so I could surprise him after our special meal. I picked it up in the drive thru. Big mistake! I suspect they are too embarrassed to serve the teeny tiny slices of cake face to face in store and pass off the smallest slices to unsuspecting carry out customers. 3.5 stars... Disclaimer: I grew up with this place so my opinion may be a bit skewed. For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed the Hungry Hobo sub sandwich, and I always order the #11. Sweet pillowy bread topped with sliced meats and cheeses freshly cut and assembled to order with your choice of toppings, I always get the banana peppers to spice it up! They also have wonderful potatoes and it appears they now serve fries. Prices are in line with expectation and ambiance is train station meets lunch counter. Hungry hobo is a quad city institution. There is a good reason the local chain has seemingly been around forever. The sandwiches are solid and they have some notable sides like the baked potato and carrot cake. They slice the meat the time you order and the bread is generally very fresh. Definitely worth a try if you are from out of town. read more

The food was not that great. The cost was extreme for what we ordered. The supreme nachos had no meat, even after I specifically ordered "meat, sour cream, cheese and tomatoes only". Quite honestly, if you get a deli sandwich and a bag of chips, you're wasting you money. It is nothing spectacular. It's when you get to the grilled steak and chicken sandwiches, the baked potatoes, the nachos, the WAFFLE FRIES WITH CHEESE. The chili bread bowls! That is what makes this place great, in my opinion. As a side note, I have a good friend that calls this place "Hungry Mayonnaise." I don't get mayo on my sandwiches, but apparently if you ask for mayo they GLOB it on. Hungry Hobo - the front of a restaurant - Desserts Near Me - Moline, Illinois

I have mixed feelings about Hungry Hobo. It's a place I grew up with and the mere nostalgia forces me to crave their hot ham and cheese subs (with lettuce and mayo) every time I visit the Quad Cities area. But as I've grown older and developed a more... mature pallet, this place continues to struggle to stay up to par with what I want out of a sandwich shop. This specific Hungry Hobo is located in a nice quiet area. There is plenty of uncomfortable plastic seating and well-sanitized tables. As with all other Hungry Hobo locations the floors are vintage checkered tile. You order your food at the front of the restaurant and they do provide both 'dine in' and 'take out' options. It's a lot like Subway except the sandwiches are not prepared directly in front of you but rather at the kitchen in the back. There are additional menu items you can choose from at the front counter area including an array of chips, potato and macaroni salads, and puddings. I've never been thrilled with their chip options (Subway does a better job of offering lower calorie and whole grain chip options). They're cold salads and puddings also have a bit of a 'school cafeteria' vibe to them. Pre-prepared and served in plastic bowls. They're never been anything special and I've always regretted purchasing them. With that being said in the year 2016 Hungry Hobo was rated the best sandwich shop in the Quad Cities. I would beg to differ and would say that it probably got that title merely because it's the most well-known sandwich shop in the Quad Cities with a series of local chain stores spewed at seemingly every corner. Contrasted to other sandwich shops in the area they are also very child friendly with convenient quick options. They're subs are served on 6 inch buns and can be personalized to your preferences with very similar meat, cheese, veggie, and condiment options as the well-known national Subway chain. The bread Hungry Hobo uses is much different though and tends to be thicker, doughy-er, and chewier. When I was young I loved the bread, but as I've gotten older I've found it to be just a bit too tough to chew and quite bland in flavor. The meat and cheeses are fresh though and their 'sandwich toasting' skills are on point. The sandwiches always come out with warm meat and bread and nice melt cheese. I've never had issues with the employees at this location. The service is always prompt and professional. They're never overtly friendly- but what do you expect from a local fast-food style restaurant? You get what you pay for. The prices here are relatively affordable and the service is fast. They're a great option for families but if you're looking for something more suitable for adult taste preferences I'd opt for one of the fancier little eateries in downtown Moline. read more

The sandwich was average overall. Although the meat was good, the bread was pretty "tough" (if that is a way you describe bread). I couldn't really taste anything else besides the giant hunk of bread that was difficult to bite into. Eventually I gave up and just ate the insides with a fork/knife. This is the second time I've been here and both times it was just a bland sandwich. Another gripe is that they are a sandwich place that does NOT have pickles.... how strange! Today it's got to the point who ever runs the place has become greedy. Less meat on the sandwiches, smaller portions of the spice cake I love, and I'm about to the point of saying no more.
